Opis:
The article describes diplomatic operations carried out by Poland’s MP and executive minister in Sofia Adam Tarnowski, one of the leading representatives of Polish diplomacy in the Second Republic of Poland. He was the longest serving Polish diplomat in the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1930–1941). Later he emigrated to London to hold prominent functions: a general secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an MP in the Czechoslovakian government in exile, Minister of Foreign Affairs during and after the war in the governments of Tomasz Arciszewski and Tadeusz Bor-Komorowski. Chronological dividing lines of the study are: the fall of Poland in September 1939 and Bulgaria breaking off its diplomatic relations with Poland in March 1941. At that time, the Polish diplomatic post in Sofia was one of the very few legations which dealt with diplomatic issues despite the German seizure of Poland. When the war had broken out, Tarnowski began conducting a serious diplomatic campaign towards establishing contacts with his occupied motherland, helping people threatened by Nazi repressions, and informing foreign governments of crimes and destruction taking place in Poland. Tarnowski was supported by a group of Bulgarian diplomats sympathising with Poland. They stayed in Berlin and occupied Warsaw and provided priceless services to our country by carrying money, letters, and information about the Nazi crimes in the occupied Poland in their diplomatic bags. Our MP in Sofia would give shelter to Polish refugees, protect valuable objects belonging to the national heritage, and organize redeployment of Polish troops from Bulgaria into Turkey. The most spectacular operation managed by Tarnowski was the evacuation of a group of several dozen Polish airmen (in September 1940) by sea from the Black Sea coast to Turkey . A very important element of Tarnowski’s operations was the intervention with the Bulgarian government to help Polish scientists from the Jagiellonian University and the AGH University of Science and Technology arrested by Germans in November 1939. Tarnowski talked to Professor Bogdan Fiłow, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, a world famous archaeologist, who was about to become Prime Minister of Bulgaria. The sources of the article include: unknown historical documents from AAN, published diplomatic and intelligence documents, journals and recollections. Bulgarian sources and analyses, including video footage, were also used.

Opis:
In this paper, we studied the relaxation of (001) surface of $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ slabs with two termination surfaces and with 3, 5, and 7 layers thickness for each cases, using density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation for exchange-correlation functional and pseudo potential method. We calculated the slab energy and the rate of expansion and contraction of the layers and compare them for different thicknesses. Band structure and density of states for these slabs and for $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ bulk were computed to find out the variation of band gap with respect to slab thickness. It is found that in comparison with bulk, in $TiO_2$ slabs of both materials gap size decreases while in SrO and BaO slabs it increases.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Infectious and parasitic diseases transmitted by ticks, such as Lyme diseases, granulocytic anaplasmosis and piroplasmosis, have been frequently reported in Europe, with increasing attention to them as an emerging zoonotic problem. The presented study was performed to assess the distribution and the density of questing ticks in three regional parks of Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy, and to seek molecular evidence of potential human pathogens in tick populations. Materials and Methods. In the period April-October 2010, 8,139 questing ticks were collected: 6,734 larvae, 1,344 nymphs and only a few adults – 28 females and 33 males. The abundance of Ixodes ricinus questing ticks was compared among different sampling sites and related to microclimate parameters. 1,544 out of 8,139 ticks were examined for the presence of pathogens: PCR was used to detect piroplasms DNA and Real time Taqman PCR for Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. Results. The predominant species was I. ricinus (overall abundance 1,075.9/100 m2); more rarely, Dermacentor marginatus (n = 37 – 0.45%), Scaphixodes frontalis (n = 13 – 0.16%), Hyalomma spp. (n = 6 – 0.07%) and Ixodes acuminatus (n = 3 – 0.04%) were also found. 28 out of 324 (8.6%) samples of ticks were PCR-positive for piroplasm DNA. 11 amplicons of 18S rRNA gene were identical to each other and had 100% identity with Babesia EU1 (Babesia venatorum) using BLAST analysis. Real time Taqman PCR gave positive results for A. phagocytophilum in 23 out of 292 samples (7.9%), and for B. burgdorferi s.l. in 78 out of 292 samples (26.7%). I. ricinus was the only species found positive for pathogens by molecular analysis; 16 tick samples were co-infected with at least 2 pathogens. Discussion. The peak of nymph presence was in May, and the higher prevalence of pathogens occurred in April-June, most often in nymphs; therefore, spring season could represent the higher risk period for the transmission of pathogens. These data could provide guidelines for the preventions of tick-trasmitted diseases in this region.

Opis:
Lysozyme (LSZ) exhibits strong antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. This property has found practical applications in the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries. Elucidating protein orientation on a nanoscale surface has important implications for integrat- ing proteins into micro- and nano-fabricated devices. Analysis of conformational changes of proteins by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D) and surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR) was performed. Both methods can be used to study protein adsorption phenomena (adsorbed amount and the thickness of protein layer). A combination of QCM-D and MP-SPR methods makes it possible to draw conclusions about the factors that control the interactions between LSZ and the surface of gold. pH strongly affects the effectiveness of LSZ adsorption onto the surface and leads to orientations changes of protein on the surface. The highest adsorption value was attained near the I.E.P. This data clearly indicates that electrostatic interactions are a driving force for LSZ adsorption and significantly affect the topography of layers formed on the surface. Furthermore, these meas- urements show high hydration (60%) of LSZ layer on surface of gold.

Opis:
Maximum power point trackers are in charge of absorbing the maximum potential power from the photovoltaic panels. Thus, this makes the maximum power point trackers the fundamental parts of the photovoltaic panel systems. The conventional maximum power point tracker algorithms are working well under balanced insolation conditions, however when the partial shade condition occurs, those algorithms are trapped at the local maxima. Hence, under partial shade conditions, the need for a global maximum power point tracking algorithm arises. Particle swarm optimization is a preferential algorithm of maximum power point trackers in literature, especially in partial shade conditions. This paper is focused on improving the existing particle swarm optimization algorithm for maximum power point trackers. The proposed advanced particle swarm optimization algorithm aims to catch the global maximum power point much faster, accurately and to reduce the chatter in the power curve. The proposed method accelerates the global maximum tracking time with gridding the initial search area. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with simulation results and these results are compared with a conventional particle swarm optimization method under step changes in irradiance and partial shade conditions of an array of photovoltaic panels.
