Opis:
Mark the Hermit, a monk from the 4th century, active probably in Asia Minor, indicates in an original way that the cause of passion in man is forgetting about good thoughts (lēthē), carelessness (rhathymia) and ignorance (agnoia). This threefold evil is opposed by the following means: forgetfulness – by memory of good works, carelessness – by most sincere readiness, ignorance – by enlightened cognition. Nobody before him had ever dealt with the causes of passion in such a way and indicated such an antidote to them. In order to understand Mark the Hermit’s theory, it is necessary to look in detail at this writer’s teaching about passion and the ascetic fight against it. This article is devoted to this spiritually important issue.

Opis:
Mark the Hermit is one of the most important theoreticians of ascetic life in the ancient Church. In his ascetic writings, he takes up a number of subjects, including teaching about freedom and grace. This is not a systematic doctrine, but rather statements scattered in his works, occasional, often similar to each other. “Freedom” is defined by St. Mark the Hermit by the term ἐλευθερία, while “grace” – by the term χάρις. He also reminds us that freedom is given to man by Christ; man also receives it in the sacrament of baptism, because it frees him from the burden of sin. Grace, in turn, is presented by Mark the Hermit always as a gift from God given to man. Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven is a gift, and not a reward for deeds, and the salvation that we receive from Christ is also grace. St Mark the Hermit’s teaching on freedom and grace certainly differs from the views of the Messalian sect, whose followers did not want to admit that grace and freedom are given to the baptised, so that they can perfect themselves throughout their lives and become similar to God.

Opis:
Intercalations are found in the Gospel of Mark. They are graphically described by the following scheme: A – B – A’. Mark’s convention consists of the break off narration (pericope A) through insertion of another one (B) and placing it inside. Such a technique is called intercalation, interpolation or a sandwich technique. The use of intercalation is somehow intended. The purpose of this article is to indicate a problem of criteria that will allow to select the texts of intercalations precisely. The analysis of the criteria and the features of intercalations corroborates the use of sandwich technique by Mark in the six commonly accepted by the biblical scholars conjoined narratives: 3:20-35; 5:21-43; 6:6b-31; 11:12-25; 14:1-11; 14:53-72 and also in case of the juxtaposed pericopes from the group of disputable ones: 8:1-21 and 15:40-16,8.DOI: https://doi.org/10.31743/ba.2018.8.3.03

In this paper, I respond to a recent published analysis of my work by Dr Piotr Bylica, which characterises me as a “naturalistic theist”. I suggest that Bylica’s analysis takes this approach in order to fit my thought into his own “levels of analysis” scheme, but that it does not accurately represent my own theistic beliefs. I further argue that this process has resulted in the loss of important nuances in my work on areas such as miracles, dualism, and biblical interpretation.

This article is on the administration of the censor’s mark on Roman citizens who contracted inappropriate marriages in republican Rome. An examination of the source texts has led me to conclude that marriages contracted by members of the nobility with freedwomen or women with a bad reputation were considered unacceptable and were liable to a censor’s mark. That is why authors writing on Augustus’ reform of the marriage laws say that the Emperor permitted all the citizens except senators to marry a freedwoman.

Opis:
Although the works of the evangelists about Jesus are all named “gospels”, each of them has a different literary genre: Matthew writes the history of the new Exodus, Luke writes the history of the messianic work of salvation, while Mark, who called his work “The Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mk 1,1), writes the message of the coming and the inauguration of the kingdom of God. The theme of the inauguration of the kingdom is found by Mark in Matt. and the Book of Consolation in Is 40-55. The term “the kingdom” is found in the gospels in two significations: as the kingdom of the present era, and as the kingdom of the future era. The kingdom in this first signification is especially emphasized by Mark; he removed many texts about the future kingdom. Why? Probably he is under the influence of the Book of Consolation as well as of the letters of Saint Paul. He recognizes that centring on the kingdom which is present is more conductive to the reception of the gospel by the Gentiles. It is not the purpose of this article to present the synoptic problem, but it is worth commenting briefly on this theme. The differences between Matt. and Mark are usually explained by saying that Matthew took over the Gospel of Mark, but changed its composition and added many of his own texts to it. Many think that it is not possible that important texts of Matthew were removed by Mark and its beautiful composition changed by him. Biblical scholars try to explain the difference between Mt and Mk by the differences in their sources. These attempts at explanation do not lead to justified conclusions. The synoptic problem is the result of the editorial work of the evangelists; it is the result of differences with regard to the literary genre as well as to freedom in the use of the sources by the evangelists.

Opis:
Mark the Ascetic is opposed to the Messalians. According to them,Satan inhabits the human heart from the fall and must be removed throughconstant prayer and expelled by receiving the Holy Spirit. For Mark theAscetic it is the Holy Spirit who lives in the human heart from his baptism. The believer must be vigilant because Satan wants to come from outside totake the place of the Spirit. The continuous prayer is therefore not a way ofgetting closer to God. It is a weapon in a spiritual battle trying to distanceus from God. It is even more than a weapon: it is love, because God and manare from the baptism in a love relationship which is expressed by prayer.Mark the Ascetic confronts the Messalians, who use the continuous prayeras a way of achieving salvation, a way which should result in the coming ofthe Holy Spirit. In this way, the Messalians “instrumentalise” prayer. Thestudies on Mark’s works, especially on his vocabulary to describe prayer, show his clearly defined position, which is completely different from theapproach of the Messalians. Prayer for Mark the Ascetic is neither means, nor instrument. It is a sign of love, an exchange of intimate love with God.By reaching for wedding terminology, Mark clearly shifts the accentonlove with God. Prayer becomes a place of love that is experienced in theheart of the faithful.

This essay builds on my extensive argument elsewhere to the effect that the Gospels are closely based on eyewitness testimony. It focuses on the nine healing miracles in the Gospel of Mark. The intention is not to offer any kind of proof that the stories really are based on eyewitness reports, but to show that Mark wanted to claim eyewitness testimony for them and that this explains some features of the narratives. The features that are discussed from this perspective are the Aramaic words of Jesus, the occurrence of personal names, and the literary construction of point of view.

An Explosive Aporia"The article traces and analyses the origin of Russian postmodernism, seeing it as a reaction to soviet meta-narratives and the official attempts to control the avant-garde movements. But the particular shape which post-modernism adopted in Russia is also reflecting deeper cultural dominants, notably the lack of a middle ground between various cultural extremes, which in turn appear to constitute the foundations of Russian culture. Russian post-modernism, the article argues, is thus characterised by a constant internal struggle between opposing discourses rather than by a consistent opposition to social and political traditions of modernity.

The purpose of the publication is to determine the level of consumer awareness regarding the knowledge of quality marks and food safety awareness in the aspect of purchasing decisions. The research covered a group of 51 respondents who were residents of the Silesian Voivodship. On the basis of literature research and analysis in the field of food quality and safety, the following hypothesis was formulated: By using generally known management methods, we can determine the degree of consumer awareness in terms of quality labels and food safety in the aspect of purchasing decisions. The research was conducted on a quarterly basis in 2018 based on a questionnaire (CAWI - Computer Assisted Web Interview). The results of research and their analysis have shown that consumer awareness regarding the awareness of quality marks increases, however, there is still a great need to build consumer awareness regarding the existence of quality marks and information that they provide to the consumer in terms of both quality and food safety. Research has shown that consumers are aware of the quality marks existence, but their knowledge about familiarity is still too small. It was shown that consumers, when making purchasing decisions, pay attention to product quality, price, quality certificate and ecological certificate. The factor that determines the safety of the product according to consumers turns out to be its composition. Consumers showed in research that they will not buy a product that has palm oil, sulfur dioxide, glucose-fructose syrup and aspartame.

In 1970, a psychologist named Dr. David Raskin, a researcher at the University of Utah, began a study of the probable lie comparison question polygraph technique. Raskin and his colleagues systematically studied and refined the elements of polygraphy by determining what aspects of the technique could be scientifically proven to increase validity and reliability (Raskin & Honts 2002). Their efforts culminated in the creation of what is known today as the Utah approach to the Comparison Question Test (CQT) The Utah-CQT is an empirically consistent and unified approach to polygraphy. The Utah-CQT, traditionally employed as a single issue Zone Comparison Test (ZCT), is amenable to other uses as a multi-facet or multiple-issue (mixed-issue) General Question Technique (GQT) and the related family of Modified General Question Technique (MGQT) examination formats. The Utah-CQT and the corresponding Utah Numerical Scoring System (Bell, Raskin, Honts & Kircher, 1999; Handler, 2006) resulted from over 30 years of scientific research and scientific peer-review. The resulting technique provides some of the highest rates of criterion accuracy and interrater reliability of any polygraph examination protocol (Senter, Dollins & Krapohl, 2004; Krapohl, 2006). The authors discuss the Utah-CQT using the Probable Lie Test (PLT) as well as the lesser known Directed Lie Test (DLT) and review some of the possible benefits offered by each method.

Mark, trace and structure have been in consistently used in ichnology for many years; we wish to clarify the origins and to prescribe correct usage of these terms. The origins of the words are ancient and complex; in the twentieth century they were given clear definitions as ichnologic terms. Seilacher (1953) defined a mark (German Marke) as a physical (abiogenic) sedimentary structure, as in the common terms sole mark, flute mark, but not bite mark or scratch mark. Trace has been defined many times; we recommend the consensus definition of Bertling et al. (2006) as “a morphologically recurrent structure resulting from the life activity of an individual organism (or homotypic or ganisms) modifying the substrate”; this in cludes dwelling trace, feeding trace, bite trace. Structure, as implied in another consensus paper (Frey, 1973), is a neutral term for geologic patterns resulting from either biogenic or abiogenic processes. Use of the three terms in a clear consistent manner will aid communication both among ichnologists and between ichnologists and their colleagues in other fields.

In addition to the four marks of the Church, mercy has been emphasized since the pontificate of St. John Paul II as essential to the authentic fulfillment of the Church’s identity and mission. A Christological and pneumatological understanding of these marks of the Church leads to a proper grasp of the Church in relation to mercy. The Church is merciful not de facto because of her works of mercy on behalf of the poor or sinners. Rather, she is first the recipient of unprecedented Divine Mercy, poured forth in the gift of the Holy Spirit, and so shares that same Spirit of Mercy with others through her sacraments, preaching, and service. The Church’s mission of mercy thus extends beyond the myriad of manners to alleviate human misery. In union with Christ, her Bridegroom, the Church is to communicate the one gift of Divine Mercy, the Holy Spirit, to all.
Oprócz czterech znamion Kościoła, od pontyfikatu św. Jana Pawła II wskazuje się na miłosierdzie jako istotne znamię dla autentycznego wypełnienia się tożsamości i misji Kościoła. Chrystologiczne i pneumatologiczne rozumienie tych znamion prowadzi do właściwego zrozumienia Kościoła w odniesieniu do miłosierdzia.

Opis:
While Theophylact’s Enarratio in Evangelium Marci [Explanation of the Gospel of Mark] is known as the first commentary on the whole Gospel in Greek, the question remains: how much of Mark’s Gospel is in this Explanation? The main aim of the article is to examine whether Theophylact notices the specificity of Mark’s Gospel, or whether he is harmonizing Mark with Matthew, on which he commented earlier, or other Gospels. The analysis of the Explanation of the Gospel of Mark shows that Theophylact relates to content typical of the Gospel of Mark. He distinguishes Mark’s theology from other Gospels, recognizing at the same time the theological unity of the four Gospels. His attentiveness to the details of the narrative is evidenced by the accurate presentation of divergences and, regarding some pericopes, the lack of harmonization.

Opis:
The article focuses on the issue of Jesus as the master educator of his disciples in Mark 1:35-39. The study provided is based on the principles of narrative and contextual analysis. The article consists of three parts: (1) Analysis of Mark 1:35-39; (2) Mk 1:35-39 in the context of 1:14-20; (3) Jesus master educator in 1:35-39 in the context of the Gospel of Mark. The pericope shows a certain tension between what Jesus must accomplish in terms of his mission given by the Father and what his disciples expect from him. The attitude of Simon and his companions (Andrew, Jacob and John) is expressed in Peter’s actions (“pursued him [Jesus]”) and in the apostles’ common words: ““Everyone is looking for you” (1:37). He shows that they have not yet reached the ideal personality as proposed by Jesus, which should be expressed in the attitude of repentance and faith (cf. 1:15). Their attempt to limit Jesus’ mission to Capernaum shows also that they are not yet ready to meet the goal of their vocation i.e. become fishers of men. In such context, through his command “Let us go somewhere  else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for” (1:38), Jesus corrects their attitude and invites them to strengthen their bond with him in the perspective of a universal mission. In this way Jesus reveals himself as an educator, who encourages his disciples by his own example and his own words (encouragement, commands, reproaches, prohibitions and questions) to absolute clinging to him.

This paper examines the spatial model of a house as a labyrinth in Mark Z. Danielewski’s experimental novel House of Leaves in relation to Yuri M. Lotman’s concept of an anti-home. The aim of the paper is to analyze the spatial organization of the house presented in the novel and its influence on the characters. It also examines the connection between the mental state of the inhabitants and the changing nature of the labyrinth by demonstrating how the subversive spatiotemporal organization of domestic space accounts for the transformation of the novel’s protagonists.

Opis:
In [2], Fuchs and Viljoen introduced and classified the $B^*$-modules for a valuation ring R: an R-module M is a $B^*$-module if $Ext^1_R(M,X)=0$ for each divisible module X and each torsion module X with bounded order. The concept of a $B^*$-module was extended to the setting of a torsion theory over an associative ring in [14]. In the present paper, we use categorical methods to investigate the $B^*$-modules for a group graded ring. Our most complete result (Theorem 4.10) characterizes $B^*$-modules for a strongly graded ring R over a finite group G with $|G|^{−1} \in R$. Motivated by the results of [8], [9], [10] and [15], we also study the condition that every non-singular R-module is a $B^∗$-module with respect to the Goldie torsion theory; for the case in which R is a strongly graded ring over a group, extensive information is obtained for group rings of abelian, solvable and polycyclic-by-finite groups.

Opis:
Presently, naturalistic theism is the dominant position in the debate on the relation between science and religion, defending a thesis that the conflict between science and religion is only an apparent one. Also, this version of theism accepts the naturalist assumptions behind contemporary science and attempts to reformulate the beliefs held within the traditional Christian theism in order to present the religious view of reality as not conflicting with the scientific picture of the world. Certain assumptions behind Mark Harris’s views on the relations between science and religion can be described as consistent with naturalistic theism. The model of levels of analysis helps to analyze the most important themes found within naturalistic theism and show how these are described in the works of Harris. The model facilitates the identification of the relations between particular kinds of assumptions behind the position taken from the point of view of naturalistic theism in the debate on the relation between science and religion. The list of most frequently recurring assumptions — that are also important in Harris’s writings — include: the general division of epistemic competence, which assumes theology (religion) to be competent in dealing with the metaphysical issues (Levels 1 and 2) and science to be the only one competent to deliver the empirical statements describing processes and entities found within the empirical sphere (Levels 4 and 5); the acceptance of the naturalistic assumptions behind contemporary science (Level 2) and skepticism toward the religious notions found in the traditional Christian theism describing supernatural interventions and toward the dualist interpretation of human soul (Level 3). This leads to the acceptance of purely scientific, naturalistic, explanations of the events found within the empirical sphere and to skepticism toward the literal meaning of descriptions of empirical events (Level 5) that are not consistent with the anti-interventionist assumptions behind science. Harris’s acceptance of naturalistic theism in terms of the relation between science and religion and his use of the techniques found in the modern biblical scholarship have led him to the ideas of plurality of meanings and the lack of one definite truth with respect to the specific issues he deals with. From the point of view of MLA it is the rejection of super-naturalistic assumptions of the traditional Christian theism and the acceptance of the naturalistic assumptions of science that seems to be the cause of lack of definite truth in his theological explanations.

Opis:
By taking up the problem of baptism in his writings, Mark the Hermit responds to the tendencies of the Messalians, who denied the value of baptism. Pointing to the consequences of the sacrament, he emphasizes its effectiveness in terms of being rescued from the corollaries of Adam’s sin, restoring freedom and the ability to fulfill the commandments. He emphasizes the priority and efficacy of grace given in a secret manner at the time of baptism. He reminds, however, that baptism does not deprive man of free will, but it can support it in fulfilling the law of God. He also emphasizes the mysterious indwelling of the entire Holy Trinity in the heart of the baptized and its activity. For Mark the Hermit baptism itself also involves “being placed in the paradise of the Church,” which he understands as the ability to perform acts of love towards one’s brothers.
