Opis:
The intellectual portrait in R. Queneau's "Diaries" is built by the author himself and - to the same extent - by the reader, on the basis of the way in which the records are organized and their contents. Although the autobiographical speaker in the "Diaries" adopts many models of self-presentation (e.g. as an intimist, a traveller, a patriot, a humanitarian), one of them, that of an intellectual, encyclopaedist, erudite, writer and philosopher, pervades all the others; playing with them is one of the methods of presenting oneself as an intellectual, besides direct reference, biography, thematics, and artistic programmes.

Opis:
Motives of ascending are placed in the text of the author in the domain of verticality. There are problems of dynamism of poetic space. The crossing of a horizon is characteristic for such a space. The perpetual crossing of any horizons is characteristic of Degott poetry. Both horizons apply to poetics as called in poetry ones. Their abundance and way of ascending brings plurality of symbolication. The motives of ascencion gain this poetry a trait of civilization. This is the subject in the automobile which is ascended itself.

Opis:
The article Autobiographies of philosophers is composed of three parts. The first part presents the history of philosophic autobiography since antiquity and spiritual autobiography of Saint Augustine, through “Confessions” of J.J. Rousseau – the creator of modern autobiography, Pascal, G. Berkeley and S. Kierkegaard, back to “Ecce homo” of Nietzsche. The second part presents selected autobiographies of philosophers of the 20th century like an autobiography of B. Russell (three volumes), M. Bierdiaev, K. Jaspers. The third part is an interpretation of the intellectual autobiography of P. Ricoeur, in which the author reproduces history of intellectual and philosophic development and shows the dissimilarity of “idem” to his own identity.

Opis:
Identity as an omnipresent category in science, art and life is considered by the author in reference to man. The author is mainly interested in an individual identity as revealed in writing. It is most fully revealed in autobiographical writing. Considerations on the subject of autobiographical identity are preceded by a reflection on the identity of existence as contained in philosophy already since the times of Hume, in the writings of theologists and in essayist discourses. Roughly speaking, two conceptions are outlined in the writings of an autobiographical character, especially the ones which belong to the Franconian culture.

Opis:
This text shows that U. Eco is an autobiographer in only some sense of the word. He has not written an autobiobiographical text in which he would present a segment of his life. However, he told the history of his novelistic work and presented his intellectual train of thought in his essays, interviews, introductions to his works. There also exists an indirect autobiographism in Eco, which expresses signs of the author's life and of his personality dispersed in his interpretative and theoretical writings on literature, aesthetics, history, in his feuilletons and in his novels. Five types of autobiographism have been distinguished in Eco as well as five autobiographical strategies within the indirect autobiographism. The first strategy - a strong presence of autorial I in the text - is not sufficient and requires support of some other of the strategies discussed.

Opis:
Taking into account a few sonnets by two of the twentieth-century Belgian poets and four Polish ones, this paper aims to examine the accomplishment of the sonnets and the freedom of such accomplishment, which is typical of normativism: normativism which increases the risk of classifying this poetic form as sonnet. Reflecting on the greatness of the risk involved in writing this type of poetry in the twentieth century results in distinguishing three levels of the risk: the risk of interpreting the sonnet as a fixed poetic form in view of the pervasiveness of free verse taken as parody, the risk of the second level operating within the genre (breaking the rules of the literary genre), and the risk of the third and deepest level - imbuing the lyric form with extra-poetic and extra-literary elements. The choice of the Polish works was based on the fact that metatextual reflection is to be found there, which generalizes the theoretical meaning of these three levels through the use of metaphorical language.

Opis:
This article in a way constitutes the third part of a cycle of essays on the portrayal of Poland and Poles in autobiographical texts written by foreign authors from the 18th century until the present day. It deals with the 20th and 21st centuries and discusses autobiographical material in which Poland and Polish people feature most heavily (e.g., the diaries of Claudel, Gide, and Mann). Then, the article focuses on several problems, i.e. the Jews and the Jewish question in Poland (e.g. diaries written by Kafka, Gide, Raïssa Maritain, Singer, and Oz), the war (e.g. Queneau’s and Gide’s diaries), Poland after World War II (e.g. the autobiographies of Márai and Oz), and Poland as perceived by travelers (e.g. the diaries of Dublin and others). Topics pertaining to the 21st century are only dealt with here to a limited extent.

Opis:
The newer theoretical problems in the autobiography of Polish writers have been presented on theoretical and analytical planes. Among other theoretical issues one can find the problem of integrity, equating autobiography with novel and generally with fiction and separatism which relies on these distinctions. The author takes the position in between the issues but at the same time perceives a strong tendency "to write about oneself", which results in the appriopriation of the field by fiction and essay. Hence the limitation in divisions of broadly understood autobiography to: "simple" autobiography and autobiography of men of letters; the classical and modern; reference and literary, those written in the form of a journal and reminiscent writing (autobiography in the narrow sense and memoirs). The analysis of autobiographic texts of the recent years have been limited to selected newer problems, such as: the issue of the Other, "unreality of the past", journal as a current experience. The issue of auto fiction and blog has also been commented on.

Opis:
This article presents the essays and poems of Aleksandra Olędzka-Frybesowa, who was a renowned translator from French and also English. In her essays, Olędzka-Frybesowa specialises in the Romanesque and Gothic architecture and sculpture of Western Europe as well as European painting from Medieval Ages onwards. She is also familiar with the art of South-East Europe. Her essays cover literary criticism devoted especially to poetry, with a particular interest in French and mystical poetry, as well as haiku, which was also her own artistic activity. The author of this article analyses Olędzka-Frybesowa’s ten volumes of poems, which follow a thematic pattern, especially the theme of wind (air). The analysis provides various insights into a variety of functions of this particular theme, from reality-based meanings to mystical and ethical features. This variety of funtions of the wind theme is supported by a particular melody of the poem and its abundant use of metaphors.

Opis:
This article discusses the content of an album of P. Lejeune and C. Bogaert, published in Paris in last year (in 2003), dedicated to a personal diary. The fact of bringing out of this publication became for the author of this article an impulse to present an anthropological view at the form of diary. The author - taking an opportunity of presenting the content of the album - gives an outline of the tradition of the genre, discusses various criteria (geographical, historical, sociological) which have an influence on the development and formation of this literary form. The author also draws attention to the significant features of a personal diary (the ones which differ it from, e.g. autobiography) and its kinds (from the purest form of a personal, intimate diary through the diary-letter written by one to him/herself to some unconvetional diaries such as: a painter's diary, diary-comic-strip, film diary, diary-photograph, on line diary - blog). While also pointing to such forms as: spiritual diaries, journey diaries, log books, and historical chronicles, the author emphasises the necessity of relating the origin of the diary with a concrete situation of men.

Opis:
This text presents some autobiographical writings of foreigners, which concern Poland of 18th and 19th century with the exception of those treated in J. Gintel’s anthology. This is no problem of systematic information concerning Poland’s reality in these centuries which are to be found in commentaries and treaties. We are discussing foreign diaries, memoires and autobiographies of the following authors: G.G. Casanova, Ch.J. de Ligne, J. Michelet, V. Hugo, R. de Chateaubriand, G. Sand, E. and J. de Goncourts. These autobiographical enunciations are treated here as the credible source of information. These personal texts are destined for Polish readers, who feel specific pleasure finding some mentions concerning Poland. The readers encounter Poles as historical persons, artists, writers in the background of historical events, in travel, social and everyday life.
