Onychodictyon ferox, from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, is a worm−like armored lobopod with 10 pairs of dorsal plates and a pair of probable sensory appendages (“antennae”). Newly discovered complete specimens show that Onychodictyon is represented by two species: O. ferox with a “head” bearing a pair of dorsal “antennae” and a trunk with 11 pairs of limbs, whereas O. gracilis has a blunt anterior end without any appendages and a trunk with 12 pairs of limbs. Because of the close resemblance of the “antennae” of O. ferox and those of the lobopod Miraluolishania, they are considered to be homologous structures. The “antennae” of Cambrian lobopodians are proposed to be homologous with the arthropod antennulae.

Opis:
Additional data on the Lower Cambrian ichnotaxa from the Holy Cross Mountains are presented. Nine ichnotaxa are described for the first time from the area, additional descriptions of three known ichnotaxa are supplied, and two ichnotaxa are shown to have extended stratigraphic ranges. Most Lower Cambrian trace fossils belong to the Cruziana ichnofacies. The high taxonomic diversity of the Early Cambrian trace fossil assemblages from the Holy Cross Mountains in comparison to the trace fossil assemblages of the Mid- and Late Cambrian of the area is confirmed.

The morphology and organophosphatic shell structure of the paterinate brachiopod Askepasma is documented using new and previously collected specimens from the lower Cambrian of South Australia. Lack of adequately preserved material has seen the majority of paterinate specimens previously reported from South Australia referred to the genus Askepasma and treated under open nomenclature. Large collections of paterinates from the lower Cambrian Wilkawillina, Ajax, and Wirrapowie limestones in the Arrowie Basin, South Australia have prompted redescription of the type species Askepasma toddense and the erection of a new species, Askepasma saproconcha sp. nov. Askepasma saproconcha sp. nov. currently represents the oldest known brachiopod from the lower Cambrian successions in South Australia with a FAD in pre−trilo− bitic (Terreneuvian, Cambrian Stage 2, lower Atdabanian) strata in the basal part of the Wilkawillina and Wirrapowie limestones. Askepasma toddense predominantly occurs in Abadiella huoi Zone equivalent strata (Unnamed Cambrian Se− ries 2, Stage 3, middle–upper Atdabanian) in the upper part of the lower Wilkawillina, Wirrapowie, and Ajax limestones. The shell microstructure of Askepasma suggests a proximal stem group position within the Brachiopoda and similarities with tommotiid taxa provides further evidence that the ancestry of crown group brachiopods is firmly entrenched within the Tommotiida.

A stem-group brachiopod, Oymurania gravestocki Ushatinskaya gen. et sp. nov. is described herein from the middle Atdabanian-lower Botoman Stages (-Cambrian Stage 3) of the Siberian Platform. The fossils were extracted from limestone beds of the Emyaksin, Perekhod, and Pestrotsvet formations as assemblages of disarticulated orthoconic to cyrtoconic porous shells in apatite preservation. The originally organophosphatic shells of Oymurania are externally similar to mitral sclerites (ventral valves) of the stem-group brachiopod Micrina, although no sellate-like sclerites, nor differentiated subapical area with apophyses were recognised in our material. The range of Oymurania shells with sub-central to posteromarginal apex is similar to that of ventral valves ofMickwitzia. Oymurania is also characterised by the system of radial and orthogonal canals open in pairs or triplets in small depressions or indentations of growth lamellae in the outer shell surface. The orthogonal (Micrina-Setatella type) and radial (horizontal setigerous tubes) canals are widespread among the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods, such as Micrina, Mickwitzia, and Setatella. In addition to these canals, Oymurania exhibits a well-developed acrotretoid columnar microstructure, also known from Setatella. A broad subapical platform in cyrtoconic shells (presumably ventral valves) of Oymurania is interpreted homologous to the deltoid area in mitrals of Micrina and pseudointerarea/interarea in ventral valves of Setatella/paterinid brachiopods. Except with probable cell imprints and openings of orthogonal canals, no morphological differentiation was, however, reflected by the shell interior of Oymurania gravestocki. Being closely related to tannuolinids and mickwitziids, Oymurania complements the picture of diversification of the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods that occurred in parallel with radiation of paterinids and other crow-group brachiopods on the Siberian Platform and worldwide.

The organization of the lophophore and the digestive system are recognized as two of the diagnostic characters in the definition of higher brachiopod taxa, and hence play a major role in their phylogenetic analysis, their structure, however, is very rarely fossilized. Here we describe and interpret specimens of the brachiopod Lingulellotreta malongensis, from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte (South China), one of the earliest known taxa of the Lingulellotretidae, in which lophophores and intact, U−shaped digestive tracts are extraordinarily well−preserved. The lophophore, with clearly preserved tentacles, corresponds to an early spirolophe developmental stage. The digestive tract consists of a mouth, esophagus, distended stomach, intestine and an anterior anus, and differs from that of the Chengjiang obolid Lingulella chengjiangensis by the presence of the dilated stomach and by the absence of a looped intestine as in Lingula. In addition, the relative sizes of the mantle and visceral cavities of Lingulellotreta malongensis also are described. These fossils demonstrate that by the Atdabanian brachiopods had already possessed advanced features, and suggest that a lophophore and a U−shaped intestine with an anterior anus are brachiopod plesiomorphies.

A large lobopod, Jianshanopodia decora gen. et sp. nov., with body length (excluding appendages) about 220 mm from the Lower Cambrian Haikou section, near Kunming, Yunnan, southwest China, shows a mixture of characters, including features of the lobopod Xenusion Pompeckj, 1927, e.g., a large cylindrical body with annulations, stout and strong lobopod appendages each bearing bases of serial tubercles, and of Aysheaia Walcott, 1911, i.e., a pair of large frontal appendages. This suggests that the new genus might be a connecting link between Xenusion and Aysheaia. Besides, Jianshanopodia shares some features with the Early Cambrian stem group arthropod Pambdelurion Budd, 1997, and Kerygmachela Budd, 1993, e.g., the pairs of mid−gut diverticula, the possible presence of tail fan, the mouth cone, the frontal pharyngeal structures and the pharynax are surrounded by the bases of the large frontal appendages. However, compared with a series of segmentally arranged, imbricating, paddle−shaped, movable lateral flaps of both Pambdelurion and Kerygmachela, Jianshanopodia possesses distinct complex appendages with tree−like or lamellate branches. The discovery of this rare transitional form not only throws new light on the early diversification of lobopods, and may also have significance with respect to the origin of arthropods.

The hyolith assemblage from the Lower Cambrian Bastion Formation of North−East Greenland is significant in that it contains several hyolith taxa that possess traits of both orders Hyolithida and Orthothecida. They possess morphological traits that seem to be characteristic of the ancestral forms of both groups. In addition, many hyolith taxa from this interval are globally distributed, supporting the notion that these fossils have potential as stratigraphic indicators. This assemblage contains genera and/or species seen in Australia, North America, the Siberian Platform, and South China. Hyoliths identified include the hyolithids Parkula bounites, Hyptiotheca karraculum, Microcornus eximius, M. petilus, Paracornus poulseni gen. et sp. nov., as well as Similotheca similis?, S. bastionensis sp. nov., and S. groenlandica sp. nov.; two opercula remain in open nomenclature. Orthothecids from this assemblage are one unnamed species each of Contitheca and Gracilitheca. Large, macro−sized hyoliths from the same formation described by Poulsen (1932) are mostly unidentifiable, although an operculum formerly identified as Hyolithes (Orthotheca) communis is reassigned to Hyptiotheca. Problematic organisms of uncertain affinity include Cupitheca holocyclata, Conotheca australiensis, an unnamed species of Coleolus, and the cap−shaped Cassitella baculata gen. et sp. nov. that may be an operculum of some as yet unknown organism. Missarzhevsky (1969) used Hyolithes(Orthotheca) bayonet var. groelandicus and H. (O.) bayonet var. longus as the basis for Lenatheca, but the specimens on which that genus is based are too poorly known for a proper diagnosis of Lenatheca.

Opis:
Published sulphur and oxygen isotope age curves for the late Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian time interval have been based on studies of sulphate intervals of the East Siberian salt giant. We report here on sulphur and oxygen measurements for sulphate dispersed in, or forming laminae in, the rock salt deposits in all Lower Cambrian basins of East Siberia. Sulphur isotope data for 26 samples of Lower Cambrian anhydrites from East Siberia range from +22.6 to +34.5‰. No difference was observed between different suites and between samples taken from anhydrite intercalations in rock salt and from water-insoluble residue in rock salt. Oxygen isotope data for 25 anhydrite samples range from +12.4 to +17.8‰, and thus δ18 O values have a smaller range of variation (5.5‰) than δ34 S (11.8‰) over the entire set of Lower Cambrian anhydrites. The great δ34 S variability observed in the Lower Cambrian of Siberia seems to reflect mixing of sulphates coming from the ocean and due to the riverine input. The lowest δ18 O values may indicate the input values from both the sources, whilst the highest value may result from isotope exchange between SO4 2- and water. Our results combined with data provided by previous workers could indicate a clear stratigraphic trend in δ34 S values, with a remarkable fall of ca. 9‰ in δ34 S value during the earliest Cambrian and then a slight rise in δ34 S values in the younger part of Early Cambrian. However, if only the highest values are taken, the measured values are compatible with seawater δ34 S 3 30‰ during the entire Early Cambrian. Sulphur isotopic composition of sulphate minerals did not be come heavier from the sulphate stage to ward the chloride stage.

The lower Cambrian (Series 2) White Point Conglomerate (WPC) on Kangaroo Island, South Australia contains exotic clasts representing a diverse array of lithologies, including metamorphics, chert, sandstone, and abundant carbonates, notably archaeocyath-rich bioclastic limestone. Acetic acid digestion of the WPC bioclastic limestone clasts reveals a diverse shelly fauna. This assemblage includes abundant organophosphatic brachiopods such as Cordatia erinae Brock and Claybourn gen. et sp. nov., Curdus pararaensis, Eodicellomus elkaniformiis, Eohadrotreta sp. cf. E. zhenbaensis, Eoobolus sp., Kyrshabaktella davidii, and Schizopholis yorkensis. Additional shelly taxa include the solenopleurid trilobite Trachoparia? sp., the tommotiids Dailyatia odyssei, Dailyatia decobruta Betts sp. nov., Kelanella sp., and Lapworthella fasciculata, spines of the bradoriid arthropod Mongolitubulus squamifer, and several problematica, such as Stoibostrombus crenulatus and a variety of tubular forms. The upper age limit for the WPC is constrained by biostratigraphic data from the overlying Marsden Sandstone and Emu Bay Shale, which are no younger than the Pararaia janeae Trilobite Zone (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4). The shelly fossil assemblage from the WPC limestone clasts indicates an upper Dailyatia odyssei Zone (= Pararaia tatei to lower P. janeae trilobite zones), equivalent to the Atdabanian–early Botoman of the Siberian scheme. This contrasts with the previously suggested late Botoman age for the limestone clasts, based on the diverse archaeocyath assemblage. The minor age difference between the WPC and its fossiliferous limestone clasts suggests relatively rapid reworking of biohermal buildups during tectonically-active phases of deposition in the Stansbury Basin.

A new scleritome−bearing organism with eight sclerite types, Trachyplax arctica gen. et sp. nov., is described from the lower Cambrian Paralledal Formation of North Greenland. The originally calcareous sclerites are now silicified; no microstructures are preserved. The dominant sclerite type (A; maximum dimension 19.3 mm) is bilaterally symmetrical, strongly arched, with an oval shield showing co−marginal growth lines and a projecting rostrum with prominent radial ornamentation. A similar sclerite morphology can be identified in Silurian–Carboniferous multiplacophoran molluscs but the remaining sclerite types, which also display a combination of concentric and radial ornamentation, find no clear equivalents. Two models for scleritome reconstruction are presented, based on the relative abundance of the sclerites, but neither promotes a satisfactory assignment to a higher taxon. Despite the morphological dissimilarities, possibly reflecting the age discrepancy, reference to the Multiplacophora is most attractive and entails a substantial extension of the known geological range of that group.

Palaeoscolecidan worms are an important component of many Lower Palaeozoic marine assemblages, with notable occurrences in a number of Burgess Shale−type Fossil−Lagerstätten. In addition to material from the lower Cambrian Kinzers Formation and Latham Shale, we also describe two new palaeoscolecidan taxa from the lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Fossil−Lagerstätte of North Greenland: Chalazoscolex pharkus gen. et sp. nov and Xystoscolex boreogyrus gen. et sp. nov. These palaeoscolecidans appear to be the oldest known (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3) soft−bodied examples, being somewhat older than the diverse assemblages from the Chengjiang Fossil−Lagerstätte of China. In the Sirius Passet taxa the body is composed of a spinose introvert (or proboscis), trunk with ornamentation that includes regions bearing cuticular ridges and sclerites, and a caudal zone with prominent circles of sclerites. The taxa are evidently quite closely related; generic differentiation is based on degree of trunk ornamentation, details of introvert structure and nature of the caudal region. The worms were probably infaunal or semi−epifaunal; gut contents suggest that at least X. boreogyrus may have preyed on the arthropod Isoxys. Comparison with other palaeoscolecidans is relatively straightforward in terms of comparable examples in other Burgess Shale−type occurrences, but is much more tenuous with respect to the important record of isolated sclerites. These finds from Greenland provide further evidence that palaeoscolecidans possessed a complex anterior introvert directly comparable to a number of priapulid−like taxa from other Burgess Shale−type assemblages. Although these palaeoscolecidans have been allied with the nematomorphs, molecular data in conjunction with our observations suggest that this hypothesis is untenable. Palaeoscolecidans and similar priapulid−like taxa are probably primitive cycloneuralians and as such may indicate the original bodyplan of this important group of ecdysozoans. In addition, we describe another sclerite−bearing fossil from the Sirius Passet Fossil−Lagerstätte that may be related to the cambroclaves.

The Leanchoiliidae is well−known from abundant material of Leanchoilia, from the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang Konservat−Lagerstätten. The first Australian member of the group is Oestokerkus megacholix gen. et sp. nov., described from the Emu Bay Shale (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4), at Buck Quarry, Kangaroo Island, South Australia, and is intermediate in age between the well known leanchoiliid species from the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang. Phylogenetic analysis of “short great appendage” arthropods (Megacheira) in the context of the chelicerate stem group resolves the Australian species as sister to Burgess Shale, Utah, and Chengjiang Leanchoilia species, but most readily distinguished from Leanchoilia and Alalcomenaeus by a different telson shape, interpreted as being forked, widening distally, and with a few dorsally curved spines at the posterior angle. Leanchoiliid interrelationships are stable to alternative character weights, and Megacheira corresponds to a clade in most analyses.

Opis:
The Ociesęki Sandstone Formation represents the Holmia-Schmidtiellus and the Protolenus-Issafeniella zones. Seven ichnospecies of Rusophycus, including Rusophycus exsilius isp. nov, are recognized in this formation. Moreover, Rusophycus ispp. A, B, C are recognized. The diagnoses for R. dispar, R. crebrus and R. magnus have been emended and the stratigraphic range of R. versans has been extended. The presence of Rusophycus dispar may suggest a palaeozoogeographical connection between the Małopolska Block, the Baltica palaeocontinent and the Laurentia palaeocontinent.

Apart from the Phyllopod Bed of the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian) polychaete annelids are practically unknown from any of the Cambrian Lagerstätten. This is surprising both because their diversity in the Burgess Shale is considerable, while to date the Chengjiang Lagerstätte which is equally impressive in terms of faunal diversity has no reliable records of any annelids. Here we describe, on the basis of about 40 specimens, Phragmochaeta canicularis gen. et sp. nov. from the Lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte of Peary Land, North Greenland. This makes it by far the oldest known polychaete, with a likely age of lower to middle Atdabanian, The body consists of approximately 20 segments, each bearing notochaetae and neurochaetae. The former appeared to have formed a felt−like covering on the dorsum, whilst the neurochaetae projected obliquely to the longitudinal axis. Apart from minor differences in chaetal size at either end there is no other tagmosis. Details of the head are obscure, and presence of palps, tentacles and eyes are conjectural. Jaws appear to have been absent. The gut was straight, and flanked by massive longitudinal musculature. P. canicularis was evidently benthic, propelling itself on the neurochaetae, with the dorsal neurochaetae conferring protection. Its stratigraphic position and generalized appearance are consistent with P. canicularis being primitive, but the phylogenetic relationships within the polychaetes remain problematic, principally because of paucity of relevant morphological information.

A new species of tannuolinid, Tannuolina pavlovi, is reported from the basal Krasnoporog Formation cropping out along the Sukharikha River at the northwestern margin of the Siberian Platform. The new material expands the geographic range of tannuolinids onto the Siberian Platform and extends their stratigraphic range into the basal Tommotian Stage of the traditional Lower Cambrian. The oldest appearance of tannuolinids in the fossil record is shown herein to have occurred as early as the oldest appearance of the linguliformean brachiopods, of which tannuolinids have been suggested to be a stem group. The sellate sclerites of T. pavlovi sp. nov. are different from those of the other known species of Tannuolina in the consistent absence of a pronounced sella and duplicature on the respective sides of sclerites, as well as in having regularly distributed large setal pores on the lateral edges. The mitral sclerites of T. pavlovi sp. nov. do not clearly show asymmetry of left and right forms, manifested in other species by the presence of the carina on the interior surface. Large pores aligned along the lateral margins of sellate sclerites regularly coalesce below the wall surface from an apically and an aperturally directed basal branch, forming a nearly right angle.

A diverse fauna of helcionelloid molluscs, hyoliths, and other small shelly fossils is described from limestone layers within the Forteau Formation of the Bonne Bay region in western Newfoundland. The fauna is dominated by internal moulds of various molluscs and tubular problematica, but also includes hyolith opercula, echinoderm ossicles, and other calcareous small shelly fossils preserved by phosphatisation. Originally organophosphatic shells are comparatively rare, but are represented by brachiopods, hyolithelminths, and tommotiids. The fauna is similar to other late Early Cambrian faunas from slope and outer shelf settings along the eastern margin of Laurentia and may be of middle Dyeran age. The similarity of these faunas indicates that at least by the late Early Cambrian, a distinctive and laterally continuous outer shelf fauna had evolved. The Forteau Formation also shares elements with faunas from other Early Cambrian provinces, strengthening ties between Laurentia and Australia, China, and Europe during the late Early Cambrian. Two new taxa of problematic fossil organisms are described, the conical Clavitella curvata gen. et sp. nov. and the wedge−shaped Sphenopteron boomerang gen. et sp. nov.

The present bulk-rock geochemical study aims to answer some questions concerning the distribution and variability of trace elements (TEs) and rare earth elements (REEs) in the lower Cambrian–Lower Cretaceous sandstones and mudstones of NE Gondwana in Jordan. The study proved that the REE and the TE distribution patterns in both detrital and authigenic, light and heavy minerals are controlled principally by the source-rock provenance, followed by an interplay of many factors: chemical weathering, recycling, hydraulic sorting, locally low-temperature, hydrothermal metasomatism, depositional environment and redox conditions, and diagenesis. On the basis of specific trace elements, trace-element ratios, and petrographic proxies, the provenance is constrained to be mainly felsic-, rarely mafic granitoids of the Arabian-Nubian Shield, and less commonly, recycled Palaeozoic and Mesozoic siliciclastic strata. REEs are hosted mainly in zircon, Ti-bearing minerals, and partly in clay minerals. They were depleted by both chemical weathering and recycling; nevertheless, they were enriched by subsequent hydraulic sorting and low-temperature, hydrothermal metasomatism. Chemical weathering initially depleted zirconium. However, this was counteracted by subsequent enrichment through recycling, hydraulic sorting, and low-temperature, hydrothermal metasomatism. The fractionation of the other TEs, due to these sedimentological factors during the genesis of subarkosic arenites, quartz arenites and mudstones, is discussed and some conclusions are derived. The Eu negative anomaly was enhanced significantly by recycling and low-temperature, hydrothermal metasomatism. Scandium abundance increased with decreasing grain size from coarse sand to the mud fraction. The recorded REE and TE fractionation might also apply to siliciclastics in similar, geological environments.

In the latest Precambrian and Early Cambrian, turbidity currents and cohesive flows transported pebbles, sand and mud into a deep water in south-east Poland, this sediment probably being sourced from Gondwana. Abundant detrital albite grains suggest volcanism during sedimentation. Pebbles in conglomerate interbeds are polymict and include rock fragments showing greenschist facies regional metamorphism in the source area. The Precambrian surface in the marginal part of the Carpathians lies at 2000-5000 m b.s.l., whereas farther south, around Kuźmina it reaches 7000 m. Still farther south (Krosno-Sanok-Baligród) geophysical evidence suggests it lies at about 17-20 km depth.

The fuxianhuiid arthropod Guangweicaris spinatus, from the lower Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 4), Guanshan Biota (Wulongqing Member, Canglangpu Formation), located in the vicinity of Kunming (Yunnan Province, southwest China), is redescribed based on new specimens and a re-examination of previously described material. A more complete overview of its morphology is given. Newly recognised features include: (i) a medial cephalic bulge; (ii) a tripartite hypostome; (iii) a pair of specialized post-antennal appendage (SPA); (iv) a putative telson; (v) two pairs of spines on the posteroventral margin of the terminal abdominal segment. This information is used to provide an emended diagnosis of the family Fuxianhuiidae, and the genus Guangweicaris.

The Lower Cambrian Fossil-Lagerstätte at Sinsk (Sinsk Formation, Lena River, Siberia) yields extraordinarily preserved fossils. A new trilobite-like arthopod from this site, Phytophilaspis pergamena gen. et sp. n., is assigned to the subclass Conciliterga Hou & Bergström, 1997, ordet and family indet. It is characterized by a large cephalon with facial sutures and relatively large eyes, strongly reduced thorax and very large pygidium. The facial sutures are not connected with the eyes; librigenae preserve marks of segmentation and may represent fused pleurae of the posterior segments of the cephalon. Unlike trilobites, the original mineralization of the carapace was very weak or absent. The new arthropod differs from all of other Conciliterga by the absence of rostral plate, posterior position of eyes and large size of the pygidium.
Dolnokambryjska formacja sinska znad rzeki Leny zawiera doskonale zachowane skamieniałości. Tamtejszy stawonóg Phytophilaspis pergamena gen. et sp. n. przypominający trylobita został zaliczony do podgromady Conciliterga Hou & Bergström, 1997, ordo et fam. indet. Nowy rodzaj charakteryzuje się dużą głową ze szwami policzkowymi i dużymi oczami, silnie zredukowanym tułowiem i bardzo dużym pygidium. Policzki ruchome zachowały ślady segmentacji, co wskazuje, że mogą one reprezentować zrośnięte pleury tylnych segmentów cefalonu. W odróznieniu niż u trylobitów, u Phytophilaspis pergamena gen. et sp. n. mineralizacja pancerza była bardzo słaba. Nowy stawonóg rózni się od pozostałych Conciliterga brakiem płytki rostralnej, położeniem oczu bardziej w tyle oraz bardzo dużym pygidium.

Linguliform brachiopods were important components of early Cambrian benthic communities. However, exceptionally preserved soft parts in Cambrian linguliform brachiopods are extremely sparse, and the most important findings are from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Konservat Lagerstätte of Kunming, southern China. Here we describe the first record of preserved soft−part anatomy in a linguliform brachiopod from the early Cambrian Guanshan fauna (Wulongqing Formation, Palaeolenus Zone); a unit which is considerably younger than the Chengjiang fauna. The well preserved soft anatomy include linguliform pedicles, marginal setae and, in a few cases, an intact lophophore imprint. The pedicle has pronounced surface annulations, with its proximal−most part enclosing the apex of the ventral pseudointerarea; the pedicle is up to 51 mm long, corresponding to more than 4 times the sagittal length of the shell, and 12% of the maximum valve width. In details of their preservation, these new fossils exhibit striking similarities with the linguliforms from the older Chengjiang fauna, and all specimens are preserved in a compressed state as flattened impressions. The new linguliform has an elongate oval to subtriangular shell and an elongate triangular ventral pseudointerarea; the pedicle emerged from an apical foramen through a poorly preserved internal pedicle tube. The new linguliform is most similar to the mostly organic−shelled siphonotretoid−like brachiopod Acanthotretella spinosa, recently described from the classic middle Cambrian Burgess Shale Konservat Lagerstätte, British Columbia, Canada. The new species Acanthotretella decaius sp. nov. is described; it differs from A. spinosa in having a slightly thicker pedicle, and a larger and more rigid, probably partly mineralised shell, indicating that the mostly organic shell of A. spinosa may represent a secondary reduction of shell mineralisation. However, the spine−like setae of the new species are unfortunately poorly preserved only at the margin of the shell, but the new species is referred tentatively to the Superfamily Siphonotretoidea. The occurrence of A. decaius in the Guanshan fauna is the first lower Cambrian (Series 2, early Stage 4) record of both Acanthotretella and siphonotretoids, and it represents the first description of a lophophore and digestive tract from the siphonotretoid lineage.

The provenance of clastic material in the oldest part of the sedimentary cover of the East European Craton, in northern Poland, is analysed. Analysis of the Żarnowiec Formation sandstones (Upper Vendian-lowest Cambrian) confirm earlier views of a local origin. The crystalline basement in the Kościerzyna IG 1 region mainly yielded enderbitic detritus while that in the Gdańsk IG 1 region provided migmatitic detritus. Triangle diagrams of the overlying, mature, sandy marine Cambrian show unequivocally that the detritus was transported from the craton interior. Analysis of mono- and polycrystalline quartz and cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis indicates erosion of metamorphic, magmatic and sedimentary rocks, and this is confirmed by CL observations of zircons. These results are consistent with the view that the Upper Vendian and Cambrian strata on the Pomeranian Caledonides foreland were formed on the passive margin of Baltica.

Artykuł stanowi przegląd przeprowadzonych dotychczas badań palinologicznych utworów kambru bloku górnośląskiego, rozpoznanych otworami wiertniczymi w regionie krakowskim, którego zasięg terytorialny został zdefiniowany w ramach projektu badawczego MNiSW NN 525 051033 „Prekambr i paleozoik regionu krakowskiego – model budowy geologicznej – jego aspekt utylitarny”. Na obszarze tym, w 13 wierceniach udokumentowano zróżnicowane zespoły mikroskamieniałości charakterystyczne dla utworów dolnokambryjskich formacji z Borzety i formacji z Goczałkowic wyróżnionych na bloku górnośląskim. Najstarsze dolnokambryjskie zespoły mikroskamieniałości, typowe dla formacji z Borzety, wystepują w analizowanym obszarze w 10 profilach wiertniczych. Charakteryzują się one stosunkowo słabym zróżnicowaniem morfologicznym. Dużą różnorodnoocią form oraz wyraźną zmiennością odznaczają się natomiast zespoły mikroskamieniałości w formacji z Goczałkowic, co pozwala na wyznaczenie zespołów typowych dla wyróżnianych w jej profilu ogniw – piaskowców bioturbacyjnych z Głogoczowa i mułowców z trylobitami z Pszczyny, w trzech otworach wiertniczych. Asocjacje mikroflory udokumentowane w osadach ogniwa piaskowców bioturbacyjnych z Głogoczowa charakteryzują sie dominacją delikatnie urzeźbionych akritach, z nowym przewodnim dla tego ogniwa rodzajem Ichnosphaera. Zespoły akritach ogniwa mułowców z trylobitami z Pszczyny odznaczają sie pojawieniem taksonów o zróżnicowanej morfologii i dominacją dolnokambryjskiego rodzaju Skiagia.
The paper reviews the palynological studies carried out to date on Cambrian deposits of the Upper Silesian Block explored by boreholes drilled in the Kraków region. Differentiated assemblages of organic microfossils characteristic of the lower Cambrian deposits of the Borzęta and Goczałkowice formations from the Upper Silesian Block were documented in 13 boreholes. The oldest Lower Cambrian microfossil assemblages, which are typical of the Borzęta Formation, occur in the Kraków region in 10 boreholes, but their morphological differentiation is rather poor. On the other hand, the assemblages from the Goczałkowice Formation are characterized by a significant diver-sity and variability of forms. Thus, in three boreholes, it helped to find assemblages which were typical of particular members distinguished in the formation, namely: the Głogoczów Bioturbated Sandstones Member and the Pszczyna Siltstones with Trilobites Member. Microflora associations, documented in the Głogoczów Bioturbated Sandstones Member, are characterized by finely ornamented acritarchs with Ichnosphaera – a new index genus. The acritarcha assemblages of the Pszczyna Siltstones with Trilobites Member are characterized by the presence of morphologically differentiated specimens and predominance of the Lower Cambrian Skiagia species.

The Cambrian sequence of the Świętokrzyskie Mts. (Holy Cross Mts.) is rich both in body fossils and trace fossils. The paper presents results of examination of all Lower Cambrian trace fossils except trilobite traces. The Lower Cambrian trace fossils include 19 ichnogenera (19 ichnospecies). Four new trace fossils have been described: Multilamella spatiosa ichnogen. et ichnosp. n., Elingua convexa ichnogen. et ichnosp. n., Cochlichnus annulatus ichnosp. n., and Cylindrichnus operosus ichnosp. n. The trace fossil communities were used to characterize the environmental conditions for each formation recognized in the Lower Cambrian sequence of the Świętokrzyskie Mts.
W pracy przedstawiono opisy i rozprzestrzenienie śladów organicznych w profilu skał kambru dolnego (fig. 1). Zespół śladów organicznych jest najbogatszy w skałach tego właśnie oddziału kambru Gór Świętokrzyskich, gdyż obejmuje 19 ichnorodzajów z 19 ichnogatunkami. Kolekcja śladów została poddana krytycznej analizie, przedstawiono ich opisy wraz z dokumentacją, przy czym w pracy zamieszczono jedynie ślady organiczne dające się sklasyfikować. Większość opisanych tu ichnorodzajów i ichnogatunków znana jest ze skał kambru dolnego wielu profilów Europy i świata, ale są też nowe ichnogatunki: Cochlichnus annulatus, Cylindrichnus operosus oraz nowe ichnorodzaje wraz z ichnogatunkami: Multilamella spatiosa, Elingua convexa. Zespoły śladów organicznych wykorzystano dla odtworzenia środowiska sedymentacji formacji skalnych kambru dolnego. Najpełniejsza charakterystyka ichnologiczna możliwa jest dla piaskowców z Ociesęk (fm). Należą one do facji Cruziana i zostały osadzone w dolnej części strefy litoralnej w pobliżu granicy falowania. Natomiast w obrębie formacji o przewadze skał ilastych (formacja łupków Czarnej, formacja łupków z Kamieńca) zespoły śladów organicznych są znacznie uboższe. Różnice w zespołach śladów organicznych i w litologii sugerują iż łupki Czarnej (fm) i łupki Kamieńca (fm) osadziły się w zbiorniku głębszym niż piaskowce z Ociesęk (fm).

Three species of bradoriid arthropods from the lower to middle Cambrian transitional interval of Scania, southern Sweden, are described and illustrated: Beyrichona tinea from the top of the traditional lower Cambrian (Gislöv Formation; Ornamentaspis? linnarssoni Zone), and Hipponicharion eos and Alutella sp. from the basal portion of the traditional middle Cambrian (lowermost part of the Alum Shale Formation). The bradoriid fauna compares most closely with others previously described from western and eastern Avalonia (New Brunswick and England). The record of B. tinea suggests a correlation between the “Protolenus Zone” (Hupeolenus Zone) of western Avalonia and the O.? linnarssoni Zone of Scandinavia. Hipponicharion eos appears to be a fairly long−ranging species as it has previously been recorded from upper lower Cambrian or lower middle Cambrian strata in New Brunswick, Poland, and probably Sardinia. The record of H. eos from the lowermost part of the Alum Shale Formation suggests that this largely unfossiliferous interval in the Scanian succession is not younger than the Acadoparadoxides oelandicus Superzone. The genus Alutella has not previously been recorded from the Acado−Baltic Province.

Details of the body surface of the chancelloriid Allonnia from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang biota in southwestern China elucidate the nature of these enigmatic organisms. Rhombically arranged elements, about 30 x 60 ym, are interpreted as representing imbricating platelets, the distal ends of which projected as spinules from the body surface. Comparisons with other chancelloriids suggest that the flexible integument was continuous with the aragonitic sclerites that sit on the surface like cactus spines, and that both were formed by an epidermal epithelium secreting a continuous exo- and endocuticle. In the sclerites, the exocuticle was mineralized; the unmineralized endocuticle and cellular extensions from the epithelium filled the interior of the sclerites. In the flexible integument the epithelium was overlain by endocuticle and unmineralized exocuticle. This structure of soft integument and sclerites is at variance with proposals of poriferan or ascidian affinity of chancelloriids but in accord with a coeloscleritophoran model.

Cricocosmia jinningensis, one of the most abundant palaeoscolecid worms from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang deposits of south China, was originally described as bearing double longitudinal rows of lateral conical sclerites on the trunk. New observation reveals that the ventral trunk bears an additional set of ventral sclerites while the lateral sclerites display a tubercle−bearing (inner surface) and net−like (outer surface) microstructure similar to that of Tabelliscolex hexagonus. These findings mean that: (1) Cricocosmia shows a dorso−ventral and antero−posterior differentiation in trunk ornament; (2) as seen from the microstructure, Cricocosmia is close to Tabelliscolex hexagonus, supporting the idea that lobopodians and arthropods, both of which show an upper capping layer in the outer sclerites, are more closely related than the palaeoscolecidans; and (3) the similarities among the scalids, pharyngeal teeth and the trunk spines of palaeoscolecidans are superficial. Tabelliscolex maanshanensis sp. nov., characterized by an inner concentric circlet of laminae in each tubercle of the lateral trunk plate, is proposed herein. Element mapping reveal that four known pathways of preservation can be found co−occurring in a single specimen of Cricocosmia or Tabelliscolex, which sheds new light on the preservation of the Chengjiang fossils.

Two different assemblages of skeletonized microfossils are recorded in bioclastic shoals that cross the Lower–Middle Cambrian boundary in the Esla nappe, Cantabrian Mountains. The uppermost Lower Cambrian sedimentary rocks represent a ramp with ooid−bioclastic shoals that allowed development of protected archaeocyathan−microbial reefs. The shoals yield abundant debris of tube−shelled microfossils, such as hyoliths and hyolithelminths (Torellella), and trilobites. The overlying erosive unconformity marks the disappearance of archaeocyaths and the Iberian Lower–Middle Cambrian boundary. A different assemblage occurs in the overlying glauconitic limestone associated with development of widespread low−relief bioclastic shoals. Their lowermost part is rich in hyoliths, hexactinellid, and heteractinid sponge spicules (Eiffelia), chancelloriid sclerites (at least six form species of Allonnia, Archiasterella, and Chancelloria), cambroclaves (Parazhijinites), probable eoconchariids (Cantabria labyrinthica gen. et sp. nov.), sclerites of uncertain affinity (Holoplicatella margarita gen. et sp. nov.), echinoderm ossicles and trilobites. Although both bioclastic shoal complexes represent similar high−energy conditions, the unconformity at the Lower–Middle Cambrian boundary marks a drastic replacement of microfossil assemblages. This change may represent a real community replacement from hyolithelminth−phosphatic tubular shells to CES (chancelloriid−echinoderm−sponge) meadows. This replacement coincides with the immigration event based on trilobites previously reported across the boundary, although the partial information available from originally carbonate skeletons is also affected by taphonomic bias.

Na podstawie zdefiniowania asocjacji facjalnych i systemów depozycyjnych oraz przedstawienia ram wydzieleń wysokorozdzielczej stratygrafii sekwencji sformułowano model rozwoju i destrukcji późnoediakarskiego systemu fluwialno-estuariowego, rozprzestrzenionego w obniżeniu podlaskim i lubelskim skłonie kratonu wschodnioeuropejskiego. Wyróżniono dwie grupy systemów depozycyjnych - aluwialne i estuariowe oraz system otwartego wybrzeża. System aluwialny był początkowo reprezentowany w północno-wschodnich i zachodnich depocentrach synryftowych przez stożki aluwialne. Dystalne części stożków były obszarami depozycji fluwialnej. Duże, piaskodenne rzeki roztokowe spływały poprzecznie do osi basenu sedymentacyjnego. W końcowych stadiach ewolucji basenu aluwialnego wyrównanie topografii ryftowej i wzrost tempa subsydencji w jego południowo-wschodniej części spowodowały rozwój rzek systemu anastomozującego. Spływały one wzdłuż osi basenu z północy na południe. Zmiana rodzaju przepływu rzek roztokowych z okresowego we wczesnych etapach rozwoju basenu aluwialnego na ciągły w późniejszych stadiach, rozwój równi zalewowych rzek systemu anastomozującego i zmiana koloru osadów akumulowanych przez rzeki świadczą o zmianie klimatu suchego, pustynnego na bardziej wilgotny, umiarkowany. Późnoediakarska sukcesja silikoklastyczna basenu lubelskiego jest zapisem transgresywnego etapu ewolucji estuarium. Jej przebieg odzwierciedla pięć kolejnych parasekwencji budujących transgresywny ciąg systemowy. W najwcześniejszych etapach rozwoju estuarium lubelskie miało charakter mieszany, falowo-pływowy. W fazie maksymalnego rozwoju, w miarę znaczącego wzrostu oddziaływania pływów, było to makropływowe, hypersynchroniczne estuarium o kominowej geometrii. Na przełomie ediakaru i kambru wraz z rozwojem ciągu systemowego wysokiego stanu względnego poziomu morza rozpoczął się regres i stopniowa likwidacja estuarium lubelskiego, które przekształciło się w estuarium o mieszanej energii falowo-pływowej i następnie w otwarte wybrzeże z udziałem falowania.

Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

In the Cambrian, the Lublin Basin was a shallow-water area, located on the western edge of the Baltica palaeocontinent. The Cambrian sedimentary sequence, forming the lower part of the sedimentary cover of the North European Platform, is lithologically diversified and reflects dynamic variation in depositional environment. This paper presents the distribution of palaeofacies and sedimentary environments in the early Lublin Basin, including changes in their lateral extent during its evolution in the Cambrian. In order to evaluate the facies architecture of the Lublin Basin, a sedimentological analysis was carried out. On the basis of the detailed logging of drill cores, lithofacies made up of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones and heterolithic deposits were distinguished; 16 lower-rank sublithofacies were identified. Their specific assemblages are indicative of shelf-type lithofacies associations, i.e. (1) tidal flat with muddy, mixed and sandy tidal plain sublithofacies including subtidal channels; (2) barrier-lagoon; (3) shoreface with lower, middle and upper shoreface subassociations; and (4) offshore with upper and lower offshore subassociations, including sandy tidal ridges. During the early Cambrian, the lateral variability and environmental succession indicate a transgressive, long-term trend and the migration of a lagoonal environment across wide tidal plains and the shoreface up to an offshore environment. The Lublin Basin reached its greatest lateral extent and maximum depth in the upper lower Cambrian. Next, an opposite trend began and during the middle Cambrian a regression cycle is recorded in successive changes in sedimentary environments that reflect a progressive shallowing. Multiple changes in adjacent environments indicate repeated and cyclical, lower-rank ingressions.

Seventeen taxa of exotic trilobites representing eight families are described from the olenid- and agnostoid-dominated strata of the uppermost Cambrian Series 3 and lower Furongian alum shale facies of Sweden and from glacial erratic boulders of Denmark. Only five taxa are assigned to species level, i.e., Maladioidella abdita (Salter, 1866), Olentella rara (Westergård, 1922), Pedinocephalus peregrinus (Henningsmoen, 1957), Ptychoparia pusilla (Westergård, 1922), and Westergaardella olenorum (Westergård, 1922), whereas the others are left under open nomenclature or remain unrecognized. Most are described for the first time from the Cambrian of Scandinavia. Their affinities point to a strong connection with East Gondwana, Laurentia, Kazakhstania and Siberia. Exotic trilobites appear in the succession directly after periods of very low oxygen concentration in the Alum Shale Sea; their occurrences correspond to the ranges of agnostoid arthropods in the succession and seem to be linked to global transgressive events causing an influx of cool and/or oxygen-depleted waters onto the shelf of the Baltica palaeocontinent.

We have examined 21 samples of crude oils accumulated in the Middle Cambrian sandstone reservoirs from the Polish part of the Baltic region. All the crude oils have similar parameters and indices, which suggests generation from the same source rock. Evaporative fractionation and biodegradation processes were detected in oil collected from the B4-N1/01 borehole. All crude oils have high gravities and low-sulphur contents, less than 0.3 wt.%, which suggests that their source rock contained low-sulphur kerogen deposited in a clastic environment. A low asphaltenes content (below 0.3 wt.%) and high saturate/aromatic hydrocarbon ratios indicate long migration distances or high thermal maturities. The longest migration distance was probably attained by oils from the arnowiec and B16 deposits. The biomarker data indicate an algal origin for the source organic matter deposited under conditions of clastic sedimentation. The stable carbon isotope data support this observation. The maturity of the oils analysed varies from ca. 0.75 to ca. 1.05% on the vitrinite reflectance scale. Unlike the B6, B16, Dbki and arnowiec accumulations, oils from the B3 and B4 accumulations reveal the lowest maturity.

The paper presents the latest state of knowledge on the vertical and lateral ranges and characteristics of prospective zones (PZ) within the Lower Paleozoic unconventional hydrocarbon systems in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin (Poland). The PZ were identified within the prospective formations based on rigorously determined criteria with the application of stratigraphic, sedimentological, mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical, petrophysical, and geomechanical studies, and interpretations of borehole logs. Archival geological data and information acquired from boreholes drilled recently in concession areas have also been applied in the interpretations. Following these criteria, four prospective zones have been distinguished. The deposits encompass partly or almost completely the Piaśnica, Sasino, and Jantar formations and the lower part of the Pelplin Formation. The characteristic feature of the Lower Paleozoic deposits at the East European Craton (EEC) margin in Poland is the diachronous appearance of the Sasino and Jantar black shale formations from west to east. The Baltic area is most prospective for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs in shale formations, specifically the Łeba Elevation, where all 4 prospective zones have been distinguished. The occurrence of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons is expected in all zones. Due to the very high TOC content and geochemical characteristics, the Piaśnica Formation within PZ1 is the main petroleum source rock in the Polish part of the Baltic Basin. PZ2 (partly corresponding to the Sasino Formation) present in a large part of the Baltic Basin, is the next important prospective unit, despite not being uniform. PZ3 within the Jantar Formation was distinguished only on a limited area of the Łeba Elevation. Due to the low content of organic matter, the Lublin area is characterized by the lowest hydrocarbon potential. However, low values of that parameter are compensated by a greater thickness and lateral range of PZ4, partly corresponding to the Pelplin Formation. Comparison with other areas within the Lower Paleozoic Baltic Basin reveals the occurrence of shale deposits that may constitute a potential source of hydrocarbons, and that demonstrate diachronism. Towards the east and south-east, ever younger deposits possess the potential for hydrocarbon accumulations. In Poland, in the western part of EEC, these are: the Furongian and the Lower Tremadocian Piaśnica Formation, the Sandbian and Katian Sasino Formation and the Lower/Middle Llandovery (Rhuddanian and Aeronian) Jantar Formation. In the central part of the Baltic Basin (Lithuania), these are the Upper Ordovician and Aeronian shale successions. In the southeastern part of the basin (Ukraine), the Ludlow strata are considered to be the most promising in terms of the potential unconventional hydrocarbons accumulations.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza facjalna utworów terenewu, stanowiących najniższą część sukcesji kambryjskiej wschodniej części bloku górnośląskiego. W silikoklastycznym profilu zdefiniowano systemy depozycyjne dolnego i górnego odbrzeża, zdominowane przez facje iłowcowe z licznymi fodinichnia osadożerców oraz system depozycyjny przybrzeża reprezentowany przez piaskowce. W strefie górnego odbrzeża wyróżniono część dystalną i proksymalną.
The article is presents a facies analysis of Terreneuvian (lowermost Cambrian) deposits in the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Block. The Terreneuvian siliciclastic succession consists of the lower and upper offshore depositional system dominated by claystone facies, and the shoreface system represented by sandstones. Numerous trace fossils, represented mainly by fodinichnia of deposit feeders occur in this part of the offshore system. In the upper offshore zone, distal and proximal parts have been distinguished.

Opis:
The paper provides issues concerning dispersed organic matter in the lower Palaeozoic deposits of the Baltic and Podlasie-Lublin areas: its composition, genetic types, and thermal maturity degree. Organic matter in these rocks is represented by vitrinite-like material showing optical characteristics of vitrinite (bitumen/solid bitumens), phytoclasts and zooclasts (graptolite fragments). The UV light analysis commonly reveals a significant content of macerals from the liptinite group, represented mainly by well-preserved algae and alginite. The concentrations of organic matter varies from trace to 10% (Baltic area), and from trace to 9.20% (Podlasie Lublin area).The degree of thermal maturity of the Cambrian-Silurian deposits corresponds to the “oil and gas window”, with the average values of vitrinite-like reflectance index ranging from 0.52 to 2.03% Ro (Baltic area) and 0.75–2.09% Ro (Podlasie-Lublin area).

The paper presents the characteristics of prospective zones identified for the first time within the lower Palaeozoic shale formations occurring in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin and within the Carboniferous shale, sandstone, and mixed shale-sandstone complexes (the so-called hybrid complexes) in the basin of south-western Poland. The lateral and vertical ranges of these zones are determined based on specific criteria using the results of various research methods and analyses, i.e.: stratigraphic, sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological and geochemical of organic matter, petrographic and petrophysical, including interpretation of well logs. Archived geological materials and those coming from the boreholes drilled recently in the concession areas were also used. Four prospective zones have been distinguished in the lower Palaeozoic of the so-called shale belt: SP1, SP2, SP3 and SP4. The most prospective area for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits in shale formations is the Baltic region – the Łeba Elevation, where there are all four perspective zones, only partially covering the range of potentially prospective formations. In each of these zones, both liquid and gas hydrocarbons can be expected in this area. Due to the low percentage of organic matter, the lowest hydrocarbon generation potential is attributed to the Lublin region. However, the low values of this parameter are compensated by other parameters, i.e. the considerable thickness and lateral extent of zone SP4 corresponding partly to the Pelplin Formation. In the Carboniferous rocks of south-western Poland, seven prospective zones have been distinguished in four borehole sections. Four of them are “tight” zones in compact sandstones, while the other three zones represent a hybrid type in complexes with mixed lithology. No prospective zones have been defined in complexes with homogeneous shale lithologies. Determination of lateral extents of the identified zones has not been possible due to the scarcity of data on the geological structure and stratigraphy of the Carboniferous succession in the study area
