Opis:
The purpose of this research is to develop a Lean-RFID based waste identification system (LRWIS) for small-medium manufacturing companies. The specific objective of this research is to develop and implement the LRWIS from integrating the appropriate lean tools and advanced technologies for wastes reduction and inventory management. Subsequently, the framework was converted into a system for a small-medium sized wood processing manufacturer in Malaysia and integrated into a computerized program. The LRWIS can monitor real-time inventory and production status so the manufacturer can optimise the quantity of the primary products and deliver them on time as per the RFID information of each container. The manufacturer can also make decision instantly for controlling and changing different products in the production progress. The system provides simple constructed framework under a low cost infrastructure, yet it is of practical value in reducing the wastes and also optimising the production process.

Opis:
²²²Rn gas is a member of ²³⁸U decay chain, which is the most abundant in nature, and decays by releasing alpha particles with energy of 5.49 MeV. Various detection systems are used for radon gas detection in the research of natural radioactivity, health, geophysics etc. The detection systems need some electronics layers, like amplifier, analyser and data storage unit. These systems generally use mains voltage or self-battery and they are not useful for long-term field research because of energy consumption, which is relatively high. In this study, the development of a low energy consumption and low noise spectroscopy amplifier system for the detection of α radiation emitted by ²²²Rn and its daughters is presented. Amplifying and pulse shaping stages were developed with nuclear electronic methods. Operating performance of amplifying and pulse shaping stages has been demonstrated with a series of electronic and radioactive tests (gain test, signal to noise ratio measurement, electronics calibration and energy calibration). Additionally, nuclear spectroscopic studies were performed for comparison of this system with other alpha spectroscopy systems.

Opis:
Chilling stress is of major limiting factors influencing the growth and development of warm-season crops like cucumber. In this research, the possibility of chilling tolerance of cucumber seedlings was investigated through employing the drought and low-temperature pretreatments. The factorial experiment consisted of two factors including cucumber cultivars (i.e. ‘Super Dominos’ and ‘Super Star’) and hardening treatments (control, low temperatures at 10°C, and 15°C and drought simulated by 10% and 20% PEG) based on completely randomized design (CRD) in 3 replications. After applying treatments and providing them 48 h opportunity to be recovered, the seedlings were subjected to 3°C for a six-day period and 6 h for each day. All hardening treatments improved seedlings’ growth, chlorophyll content, total phenol (TP) and antioxidant enzyme activities, while reducing chilling injury index and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Comparing to temperature hardening, the drought pretreatment showed to have a better effect on inducing the chilling tolerance into cultivars. Overall, the results of this experiment showed that employing drought and low-temperature pretreatments enabled cucumber seedlings to mitigate the harmful effects of chilling.

This paper introduces a low-noise, low-power amplifier for high-impedance sensors. An innovative circuit using an auto-zeroed architecture combined with frequency modulation to reject offset and low-frequency noise is proposed and analysed. Special care was given to avoid broadband noise aliasing and chopping in the signal path, and to minimize both the resulting equivalent input offset voltage and equivalent input biasing current. The theoretical noise analysis of the proposed topology covers most of the noise sources of the circuit. Simulations show that the input-referred noise level of the circuit is 13.4nV/√Hz for a power consumption of 85µA with a power supply from 1.8V to 3.6V.

Opis:
The traditional methods of waste munitions treatment are expensive and also have potential risks during the treatment process. The supercritical fluid extraction technique has been a rapidly developing technique in the chemical industry in recent years. CO2 is used as the solvent, which has some advantages, such as low pollution, low cost, good chemical stability and can be operated under low temperature conditions. This research explored the feasibility of reclaiming TNT from waste munitions by supercritical CO2 fluid extraction. It was found interestingly that the melting point of TNT can be lowered in supercritical CO2 fluid. Therefore, the melting process of TNT was observed under different temperature and pressure conditions to determine the best operating conditions for stripping-down TNT from waste munitions. Afterwards, simulated warheads with weight loadings of 60 g, 500 g and 1 kg of TNT were prepared and stripping-down tests from the simulated warheads were carried out using supercritical CO2 fluid at temperatures lower than the normal melting point of TNT. The results showed that TNT could be completely removed from the simulated warheads and the optimum operating conditions were determined as 55 °C and 25 MPa. This study will contribute to the feasibility evaluation of stripping-down TNT-based high explosives.

Low temperature fluorescence excitation spectroscopy was carried out on single nitrogen vacancy defect centers. At temperatures below 90 K the fluorescence intensity of individual centers drastically diminishes because of the population of a metastable singlet state in near resonance with the optically excited state. Low temperature fluorescence excitation spectroscopy down to 5 K becomes possible via deshelving of this state with a second laser source. Surprisingly individual centers reveal low temperature fluorescence excitation line widths around 0.6 meV.

The present study aimed at investigating the control of upright quiet standing in pregnant women throughout pregnancy, and whether low-back pain exerts influence on this motor task. Methods: Myoelectric signals from postural muscles and stabilometric data were collected from 15 non-pregnant and 15 pregnant women during upright quiet standing. Electromyogram envelopes and center of pressure metrics were evaluated in the control group, as well as in pregnant women in their first and third trimester of pregnancy. A correlation analysis was performed between the measured variables and a low-back pain disability index. Results: Pregnant women exhibited a decreased maximum voluntary isometric activity for all postural muscles evaluated. Additionally, the activity of lumbar muscles during the postural task was significantly higher in the pregnant women in comparison to the non-pregnant controls. The soleus muscle maintained its activity at the same level as the gestation progressed. Higher postural oscillations were observed in the anteroposterior direction while mediolateral sway was reduced in the third trimester of pregnancy. No correlation was detected between the lowback pain disability index and neuromechanical variables. Conclusion: This study provides additional data regarding the functioning and adaptations of the postural control system during pregnancy. Also, we provide further evidence that postural control during quiet standing cannot be used to predict the occurrence of low-back pain. We hypothesize that the modifications in the neural drive to the muscles, as well as in postural sway may be related to changes in the biomechanics and hormonal levels experienced by the pregnant women.

The present work has the objective of studying the effect of shot peening with glass microspheres on SAE 1020 steel in its resistance to fatigue. Fatigue tests were carried out by rotary bending with load control and loading on balance in specimens with and without shot peening. A rotation speed of approximately 750 rpm (12.5 Hz) was employed in the fatigue tests. Vickers microhardness tests were performed in order to verify the surface hardening produced by shot peening with glass microspheres. Analysis of the steel surface and fatigue fractures was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fatigue tests were performed in order to obtain S-N curves (Wöhler curves). It was observed that shot peening with glass microspheres improved the fatigue strength of the steel at high cycle.

Opis:
The low-frequency mechanical spectra of lanthanum cobaltite based mixed conducting oxides have been measured using a computer-controlled inverted torsion pendulum. The results indicate that the internal friction spectra and shear modulus depend on the Sr doping contents (x). For undoped samples, no internal friction peak is observed. However, for La0.8Sr0.2CoO3-δ, three internal friction peaks (P2, P3 and P4) are observed. In addition to these peaks, two more peaks (P0 and P1) are observed in La0.6Sr0.4CoO3‒δ. The P0 and P1 peaks show characteristics of a phase transition, while the P2, P3 and P4 peaks are of relaxation-type. Our analysis suggests that the P0 peak is due to a phase separation and the P1 peak is related to the ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition. The P2, P3 and P4 peaks are associated with the motion of domain walls. The formation of this kind of domain structure is a consequence of a transformation from the paraelastic cubic phase to the ferroelastic rhombohedral phase. With partial substitution of Fe for Co, only one peak is observed, which is discussed as a result of different microstructure.

Partitioning of uranium and neodymium was studied in a ‘molten chloride salt – liquid Ga-X (X = In or Sn) alloy’ system. Chloride melts were based on the low-melting ternary LiCl-KCl-CsCl eutectic. Nd/U separation factors were calculated from the thermodynamic data as well as determined experimentally. Separation of uranium and neodymium was studied using reductive extraction with neodymium acting as a reducing agent. Efficient partitioning of lanthanides (Nd) and actinides (U), simulating fission products and fissile materials in irradiated nuclear fuels, was achieved in a single stage process. The experimentally observed Nd/U separation factor valued up to 106, depending on the conditions.

Opis:
In this work we present our recent results on three ionic liquids (ILs), which share bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) as anion and have different pyrrolidinium based cations. By means of a combination of mechanical spectroscopy and thermal analysis, many of the physical processes occurring during cooling down from the liquid phase, can be studied. Depending both on the diverse cation and the different thermal history, crystallization from the melt or glass transition, cold-crystallization, solid-solid phase transitions and thermally activated processes are observed. In one of the ILs, which could be easily undercooled, a prominent thermally activated peak could be observed above the glass transition. The temperature dependence of the relaxation time is approximated by a Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman equation, as usual for fragile glass forming liquids, and the apparent activation energy of W = 0.36 eV with a pre-exponential factor of the relaxation time τ0 = 1.7 · 10-13s were derived supposing jumps between asymmetrical potential wells. The kinetics of the crystallization processes have been studied in the framework of the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov theory and the Avrami parameters have been derived for both the crystallization from the melt and for the cold crystallization observed on heating.
W pracy przedstawiono najnowsze wyniki badań trzech cieczy jonowych (ILs), zbudowanych o anion bistriflimidowy (TFSI) i różne kationy pirolidyniowe.

The low temperature magnetic response of Mn(III)F(salen), salen = $H_{14}C_{16}N_{2}O_{2}$, an S=2 linear-chain system, has been studied. Using a single crystal with the field applied perpendicular to the chain direction, torque magnetometry, down to 20 mK and up to 18 T, revealed a feature at 3.8 T when T ≤ 400 mK. ESR ( ≈200 GHz) studies, using single crystals at 4 K and in 5 T, have not detected any signal. In 10 mT, the temperature dependence of the susceptibility of powder-like samples can be reasonably fit when J/$k_{B}$=50 K and g=2. In addition, these data are unchanged for P ≤1.0 GPa. Using a randomly-oriented, powder-like, deuterated (12 of 14 H replaced by D) sample of 2.2 g at 270 mK, neutron scattering data, acquired with the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source, show several well defined excitations that may be from the zero-field energy levels of antiferromagnetic S=2 spins with g=2, J/$k_{B}$=50 K, D/$k_{B}$=2.8 K, and E/$k_{B}$=0.5 K.
