Leaving one’s homeland comes as a shock for an emigrant and his family. It is even more difficult when they decide to settle down in a country as far away from Poland as Australia is. Its exotic character, so different from European li festyle conventions, can cause difficulties in adapting to the new culture and make the whole process last longer. Language and culture – the two elements closely connected with emigration a re discussed in the article. On the one hand there is a need to preserve one’s own values, on the other, however at the same time, one must adapt to new values to avoid isolation.

Objectives: Several studies, mostly based on questionnaire-derived data, have shown an increased risk of allergic diseases, especially asthma, among cleaners. The risk factors and etiological mechanisms are still being investigated. Occupational exposure to various chemical and biological agents may induce specific sensitization and/or irritant effects. The aim of our study was to estimate the prevalence of work-related symptoms suggesting the presence of allergic disease reported by cleaners, and to relate them to the results of commercially available and standardized objective tests used for screening detection of occupational sensitization and chronic respiratory disorders. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among 142 Polish workers of cleaning service in their workplaces. A detailed questionnaire, skin prick tests to common allergens and chemicals used by these workers for cleaning purposes (chloramine T, chlorhexidine, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, benzalconium chloride), total and specific serum IgE antibodies to disinfectants and rest spirometry were performed in all the subjects. Results: Fifty nine percent of all the subjects declared occurrence of at least 1 symptom suggesting allergic ailment during cleaning activities at work. Skin prick tests and specific serum IgE antibodies to disinfectants were negative in all the subjects. In 8 cases wheezing was detected during auscultation, but only in 5 of them obstructive pattern in rest spirometry was found. Conclusions: Occupational allergic causation of symptoms among cleaners could be less likely than work-related symptoms associated with exacerbations of new-onset or pre-existing respiratory diseases. Therefore, in this group of workers, mainly the non-specific irritant impact of chemicals on airways should be taken into consideration.

Objectives. Recent epidemiological studies suggested an association between a poor vitamin D [25(OH)D] status, inflammatory mediators, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We have recently proposed that pro-inflammatory interleukin 6 (IL-6) may represent a good marker for disease activity of RA. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and disease activity, joint damage, as well as serum IL-6 levels in a Polish RA population. Materials and Methods. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured in 35 female RA patients and 38 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Statistical correlations between 25(OH)D levels and the disease activity score 28 (DAS 28), joint damage based on the Steinbrocker criteria, as well as serum IL-6 levels were performed. Results. There was no statistically significant difference between levels of 25(OH)D in RA (16.89±8.57 ng/ml) and healthy controls (14.12±7.51 ng/ml), and the vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) was found in 71.43% of RA patients and 73.68 % of healthy controls. While vitamin D status did not correlate with DAS 28 (r=0.265, p=0.149) and joint damage based on the Steinbrocker criteria (r=0.367, p=0.065), a positive correlation between 25(OH)D and IL-6 (r=0.537, p=0.002) was observed in RA. Conclusion. Although further studies on a larger group of patients will be needed to confirm the data presented here, it seems that hypovitaminosis D is common in the RA patients and middle-aged non-RA healthy women in the Polish population. 25(OH)D levels were similar in the RA patients and age- and gender-matched healthy controls, and were not associated with joint damage and disease activity in patients.

The article aims at discussing the strategies of maintaining Polish traditions in different types of families leaving abroad: migration families, disconnected single‑parent families, broken families, mixed families leaving in a country of one of the parents’ origin or a country foreign to both parents, as well as multinational patchwork families. In each type there are certain difficulties in transmitting the Polish language and culture, but they are caused by different reasons. The social status also determines the used code (a limited or developed one). It results in great language diversity among children living abroad and determines their attitudes towards Polishness.

Narzędziem pomiaru najczęściej stosowanym w dydaktyce języka jest test osiągnięć. Za jego pomocą określa się stopień opanowania przez uczących się określonego materiału i/lub wielkość przyrostu ich umiejętności językowych. Błędy popełniane na etapie konstruowania testu osiągnięć w zakresie doboru treści podlegających sprawdzeniu, zadań testowych oraz zastosowanych kryteriów poprawy mogą fałszować rzeczywisty obraz umiejętności zdających, niesłusznie je przeceniając lub dostatecznie ich nie dowartościowując. W niniejszym tekście analizie poddaje się czynniki wpływające na trafność oraz rzetelność testu osiągnięć, które są podstawowymi wyznacznikami jego poprawności.
A language achievement test is the most commonly used evaluation tool in the field of language learning/ teaching. Such tests measure students’ mastery of a particular instructional domain in order to make decisions regarding their advancement and/or competency. A well-constructed test will give both the teacher and the students an appraisal of their respective achievements. Administering tests will lose its importance if the items do not pose a particular challenge to the students and/or if they do not adequately reflect the given body of content. The text presents a thorough analysis of the factors affecting validity and reliability of achievement tests. Validity is the most important quality of test use, which concerns the extent to which meaningful inferences can be drawn from test scores. No test can achieve its intended purpose if its results are unreliable.

The placement test is a special examination used to test students’ language proficiency so that they may be placed in an appropriate course. It should be relatively short, yet comprehensive. The test used in the Jagiellonian University Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World has been based on the standards set in two documents, namely the Common European Framework of Reference (2001) and the Polish Language Proficiency Standards (2003). It consists of 2 parts – written and oral. In the written part it concentrates on assessing students’ knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as reading and writing abilities. The oral part assesses students’ productive and interactive skills. The article presents all the development stages of the placement test and its subsequent modifications. It also discusses the choice of testing tasks and the means of evaluating students’ production.

Opis:
The main task of Polish schools, which have been established in all larger emigration clusters, was to preserve the knowledge of the language among children. Its command was perceived as a symbol of one's ethnicity, a sign of belonging to a group, and an expression of acceptance of the system of values, which the group represented and cultivated. Knowledge of the language was also supposed to enable young people to access the products of Polish culture and, by means of that, facilitate communal bonding. This function remained unchanged. What changed, though, is the geopolitical situation affecting the position of the Polish emigrant group. The systemic transition, EU accession, and the possibility to participate in European educational programs make our country look quite different from the emigrants' perspective. This implies that the same function has to be realized in a manner which keeps up with the times. The contemporary ethnic school has to be modern. It has to offer interesting educational programs, which correspond to the reality, but which also enable cultivating the tradition, an aspect so important when living abroad. It should organize the educational process in such a way that the young people participating in it have a feeling that they not only learn things that are important for the community of which they are a part, but also, by learning the language, they gain an additional advantage on the labor market. The text presents a proposal of organizing the didactic process in an ethnic school with consideration for a factor which, so far, has not been acknowledged when assigning students to classes, namely the level of language command. It also proposes a conception of integrated teaching of language skills and the components of the Polish language system based on cultural texts, what can significantly increase the effectiveness of teaching.

this article discusses critical literary texts devoted to walery łoziński. the writer became famous mainly as the author of Zaklęty dwór (Enchanted manor). reception of łoziński’s works has been discussed in three parts: Contemporary on Łoziński, Opinions about Łoziński’s output 1911-33 and Opinions about Łoziński’s output – new ones. in part one both articles written during the writer’s life and those written after his premature death have been referred to. part two makes reference to texts by karol Estreicher senior and wilhelm Bruchnalski, which remind of łoziński figure but the main focus has been on the articles and the book by adam Bar entitled Zapomniany powieściopisarz lwowski (Forgotten novelist from Lvov). in the end of this part there have been references to smaller texts on łoziński. in part three main attention has been paid to texts which appeared after 1945. Smaller articles have been briefly discussed. the most of the attention has been devoted to the researcher who studied walery łoziński’s output thoroughly and deeply, namely to Julian krzyżanowski. in the end tV series based on Enchanted manor directed by antoni krauze has been discussed.

Tekst ukazuje specyfikę B2 jako poziomu ilościowo i jakościowo różniącego się znacznie od niższego średniego, tj. B1. Analizę zapisów wymagań zawartych w dokumentach europejskich i polskich poprzedza przypomnienie nomenklatury i opisów wcześniej stosowanych w odniesieniu do tego stopnia biegłości. Autorki zwracają uwagę na obniżanie/się wymagań na B2, co w konsekwencji niebezpiecznie zbliża go w nieuprawniony sposób do B1, choć, jak z opisów wynika, powinien wyraźnie ciążyć ku C1. W końcowej części, w ramach rekonansu badawczego, analizie ilościowo-jakościowej poddano kilkanaście prac egzaminacyjnych z B2, która wykazała, iż jedynie po części spełniają one kryteria poziomu.
The main purpose of the article is to highlight the specificity of the B2 level which, though ‘bearing the same letter’ as B1, differs from it immensely, both qualitatively and quantitively. First, the authors recall the former intermediate level names and their descriptors, then they provide a detailed analysis of the Vantage level requirements defined in the major European and Polish documents. In the authors’ opinion, in recent years the requirements for B2 learners of Polish have been gradually lowered. To prove their thesis, they have analysed selected content of the B2 State Proficiency Test and learners’ written production.

There are many terms which refer to Polish language and they do not have the same meaning. The differences however, even minor, are particularly important in the area of language learning and teaching for both researchers and instructors (teachers of Polish as a mother tongue and as a foreign language). Not only should they be able to differentiate between various terminological categories but also be aware of their theoretical and practical implications, e.g. what is the function of Polish when it is not the pupils’ first language? what role does it play for its speakers? what is the difference between language learning and language acquisition, between bilingualism and knowledge of two languages? what is semilingualism and diglossia? These issues are closely linked with multilingualism and multiculturalism which in today’s society have become phenomena characteristic of many communities.

Opis:
The article discusses the problem of teaching Polish as a heritage language, outside of Poland and when the number of teaching hours is limited. In such a situation it is worthwhile to integrate subsystems and language skills as well as combining the curricula of a range of subjects. This eclectic approach seems to be effective here. The approach is described not as a set of random actions, but as well¬ thought out and coherent procedures. The article uses the example of Barańczak’s Garden party to present how different techniques can be applied in teaching. It also underlines the necessity of using different media, which makes language education more modern and more attractive.

Opis:
The term economy of social responsibility appeared in the context of the concept of 'sustainable development economics'. The starting point was R. E. Smith's statement that sustainable development is synonymous with the doctrine of corporate social responsibility. This means that social responsibility is an important aspect of the organisation's economy and its political and legal as well as administrative environment. Social responsibility requires knowledge of the directions of the state's economic policy. Also important is the social and cultural environment defined by the lifestyles and values system of societies, their traditions, consumer patterns, cultural preferences and religions. The ecological environment, however, expresses the state and quality of nature. The analysis of the theory and practice of applying the doctrine of the social responsibility of the organisation led to a definition of the corporate social responsibility, including cities as business centres. It also led to the conclusion that the doctrine of the corporate social responsibility has constitutional power in Poland. Contrary to popular belief about the voluntary approach to social responsibility of the organisation, a thesis was put forward that social responsibility is a constitutional norm in Poland. In the context of cities' social responsibility, the aspects of research were indicated by: the implementation of social responsibility in cities as organisations important for the state, practices that cities develop, developing cities and indicating the best indicators of measuring cities' social responsibility. A further thesis was put forward that social responsibility applies to the entire state. On the other hand, from the point of view of barriers to sustainable development, an important goal is to look for measures and conditions that ensure long-term preservation of social responsibility, which relates to three aspects: ecological, social and economic.
