Opis:
This article is dedicated to linguistic interests of Joachim Lelewel, predominantly to his deliberations on the etymology andmeaning of such names as: Czech, Lech, Wanda, the Geats, Germanic peoples, Lechites, Germans, the Slovaks, the Vandals. Attention was also paid to scholarly references to other texts of strictly linguistic nature and commentaries demonstrating extensive knowledge of linguistics with regard to pseudo-etymological assertions of priest Dębołecki, a seventeenth century preacher.

Opis:
This article focuses on Joachim Lelewel’s interest in Old Norse literature as reflected in his paper on Old Norse literature delivered in 1806 and his book Edda that was published a year later. Lelewel’s Edda comprises the first Polish translation (partly as a concise retelling) of selected parts of the French translation of the Poetic Edda and the Snorra Edda as included in Paul Henri Mallet’s Monumens de la mythologie [...] published in 1756. Lelewel’s work is placed in the context of the rising interest in this literature before 1800, whereby special attention is put on the sources Lelewel resorted to, in particular Mallet’s publications and articles in the French literary magazine Magasin Encyclopedique. Comparing the Eddas in Lelewel’s and Mallet’s publications, one can, among other things, note that Lelewel (1) ignores the literary value of the dialogue form in Gylfaginning due to a narrow focus on the mythological content (2) relates the migration of the Scythians to northern Europe in his introduction which thus serves as a substitute for the missing Prologue to the Snorra Edda and (3) partly deviates from Mallet in his footnotes. Aspects (2) and (3) can also be linked back to Lelewel’s use of Magasin Encyclopedique.

Opis:
In the article the author presents the views of Joachim Lelewel – one of the greatest Polish historians of the 19th century – on the place and function of the Reformation in Poland. The subject of the analysis were Lelewel’s main synthetic and academic works. Joachim Lelewel as one of the first Polish historians drew attention to the complexity and origins of the Reformation; he also differentiated between the Reformation and the Protestantism. He noticed the influence of the Reformation on the development of Polish culture and emphasized the uniqueness of Polish tolerance against the background of bloody events in Western Europe. He also emphasized that the idea of Reformation was unfamiliar to the Polish people, as opposed to the tolerance, which was a part of our national identity. He saw the origins of intolerance and religious persecutions in the very Reformation itself. Lelewel at the early stage of his studies approached the Reformation in a more enthusiastic manner. In exile he became more sceptical, and in Catholicism he saw the power capable of uniting the nation.

Opis:
This article examines the problems facing a comparative study of the reception of the idea of revolution in some selected writings of G.W.F. Hegel and Joachim Lelewel. Paying due attention to the specificity of the philosophical and historical approach, the article analyses the similarities and differences in Hegel's and Lelewel's appraisals of the revolutionary legacy. It also brings to light a misrepresentation of Lelewel's take on the subject in the German translation of his writings. That said, Hegel's thought remains of vital importance for both Lelewel, who is not convinced by it, and his translator H.J. Handschuch, who eagerly embraces it.

Opis:
The subject of this study is comparisons extracted from Joachim Lelewel’s Polish‑language émigré epistolary prose addressed to acquaintances and friends. A formal and semantic characterisation of the comparisons has been carried out, and their textual extensiveness has been identified and compared with comparisons occurring in the historiographer’s scientific subidiolect. On the basis of the formal analysis, it was established: 1) the type of comparatives in terms of their degree of fixation, 2) the manner of linking between comparandum and comparatum, 3) the array of the two members, and 4) the degree of extensionality. The semantics of the comparatives, on the other hand, made it possible to approximate the specifics of the historian’s colloquial thinking.
