The Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of all the major economies around the world. Majority of these industries are facing tough environment for existence. The present study explored the most common and easily implementable Lean Tools/Techniques amongst the SMEs. This has been achieved via a detailed survey of SMEs in India. Study concludes with nine most common Lean Tools/Techniques implemented across the surveyed population of Indian SMEs.

This study demonstrates application of Lean techniques to improve working process in a sewing machine factory, focusing on the raw material picking process. The value stream mapping and flow process chart techniques were utilized to identify the value added activities, non-value activities and necessary but non-value added activities in the current process. The ECRS (Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange and Simplify) in waste reduction was subsequently applied to improve the working process by (i) adjusting the raw material picking procedures and pre-packing raw material as per demand, (ii) adding symbols onto the containers to reduce time spent in picking material based on visual control principle, and (iii) developing and zoning storage area, identifying level location for each row and also applying algorithms generated from a solver program and linear programming to appropriately define the location of raw material storage. Improvement in the raw material picking process was realized, cutting down six out of 11 procedures in material picking or by 55%, reducing material picking time from 24 to 4 min or by 83%. The distance to handle material in the warehouse can be shortened by 120 m per time or 2,400 m per day, equal to 86% reduction. Lean techniques proved to provide significant improvement in sewing machine company operations.

Over the last decades, thanks to the increased pressure to reduce cost and to be more responsive to customer demands as well as improving continuously to the value provided to them, the business has been motivated for managing their operation responsibly in regards to the economical, environmental and social aspects as well. In order to fulfill this mission, encouraged companies and researchers have been finding ways to meet customer demands and sustainable requirements. Lean is one of the systematic approaches to achieving higher value for organizations by eliminating non-value-added activities. Through a case study, the research aims is to present the effectiveness of sustainable improvement on economic, social, and environmental improvement from the perspective of Lean practices. The analysis of the day-to-day Lean practices experience in a case study a good experience for enterprises in desiring applies Lean for sustainable development, can be extremely effective at developing management techniques to achieving sustainable improvement.

Lean is a culture of real and continuous optimization. As a concept of continuous optimization in the midst of limited resources, it must be practiced continuously as a long-term organizational norm. This paper revels why changeover time reduction is important in manufacturing industries and from the various tools and techniques available within Lean manufacturing describes mainly SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) for changeover time reduction and its application in Shaft manufacturing industry. This paper also describes principles, benefits, procedures and practical application of SMED. Theoretical bases are verified in a practical part that describes the analysis and design optimization of non-productive time at changeover honing machine in a selected shaft manufacturing company. The output is the structural design of universal palettes and an evaluation of productivity due to optimization of operations of time honing gear shafts. The results achieved show considerable reduction in delay arising out of machine setting time, batch-setting time and demonstration delay.

Businesses apply different techniques to keep pace with the incremental competition conditions and changing consumer demands. Lean manufacturing is one of the most effective techniques, which is a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste through continuous improvement by flowing the product. The implementation of lean manufacturing starts with the development of Value Stream Maps. A value stream is comprised of all the actions, both value added and non-value added. The main strategy of lean manufacturing, is increasing the operating speed, reducing the duration of flow quality, and improving the cost and delivery performance. This study was carried out at a men’s shirt producer i.e. a ready wear company. First of all, the current state of the production lines was analysed within the scope of the study. Then shirt production lines were organised with the lean manufacturing techniques. As a result, some improvements were made in productivity, quality and lead time.
W biznesie stosuje się różnego rodzaju techniki dla utrzymania konkurencyjności i spełnienia wymagań klienta. Produkcja odchudzona jest jedną z najbardziej efektywnych technik dla systematycznej identyfikacji i eliminacji odpadów. Zastosowanie tej techniki zaczyna się od identyfikacji map strumieni wartości. Podstawową strategią produkcji odchudzonej jest wzrost szybkości operacji, oraz redukcja kosztów i czasu dostawy. Badania przeprowadzono analizując producenta koszul męskich. W efekcie analizy wprowadzono poprawę produkcyjności, jakości i czasu produkcji.

Lean thinking and Industry 4.0 have been broadly investigated in recent years in intelligent manufacturing. Lean Production is still one of the most efficient industrial solutions in business and research, despite being implemented for a long time. On the other hand, Industry 4.0 has been introduced referring to the fourth industrial revolution. This study aims to analyze the combination of both Industry 4.0 and Lean production practices through a systematic literature review from a Lean Automation perspective. In this field, 189 articles are examined using VOSviewer for cluster analysis. Then, a more detailed analysis is provided to explore how Industry 4.0 and Lean techniques are integrated from a practical perspective. Results highlighted Big Data Analysis and Value Stream Mapping as the most common techniques, also emphasizing a growing trend toward new publications. Nevertheless, few practical applications are identified in the literature highlighting six gaps in the correlation of LA practices.

This study aimed to explore the potential impact of the Lean Manufacturing methodology on the implementation and functioning of the BRC Standard for Packaging. The study highlighted many issues where the Lean Manufacturing concept supports and opposes the BRC Standard for Packaging. A framework for the coexistence of both approaches was determined. The study was of a conceptual nature; it adopted an analytical approach. The approach was based on in-depth consideration of each requirement in the BRC Standard for Packaging s and an assessment of the coherence with the Lean Manufacturing methodology. As a result, many conclusions, clues and challenges were found. The article indicates several areas, in which Lean Manufacturing supports the BRC Standard for Packaging, attributing a special positive role to Lean Tools & Techniques. Also, it indicates six areas, in which the BRC Standard for Packaging contradicts the Lean Manufacturing approach. A comprehensive analysis of the coexistence of both management systems allows a better understanding of challenges while implementing both of them in an organisation. The presented concept of the coexistence of both systems is valuable for management.

"Lean" is a management philosophy that enhances customer value through waste elimination and continuous improvement in a system, by applying lean principles, practices and techniques. The focus on lean implementations and research had been on a single company without extension to the entire supply chain. When the lean concept is implemented across the entire supply chain, however, it is referred to as a lean supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to review literature on lean in the supply chain and identify research trends and issues within the field. The paper involves a comprehensive review of articles on lean in the supply chain using structured content analysis. The reviewed articles were classified based on the basic characteristics and contextual issues of the articles. The researchers in the field agree that the identified benefits of lean in the supply chain, which include reduced cost, improved quality, faster delivery and flexibility, are linked to the implementation of certain lean principles, practices and techniques in the supply chain. Most of the reviewed articles are case studies, and evidence for the benefits of lean in the supply chain is anecdotal. While the empirical work done in the field is encouraging, quantitative studies to substantiate the claims for the efficiency of lean in the supply chain are lacking. In the reviewed articles, the manufacturing sector received much attention, while the service sector received little attention from researchers in the field. It was generally suggested that the supply chain members, suppliers and manufacturers should be considered in the implementation of lean in the supply chain, while the inclusion of distributors and end customers was not discussed in detail in many of the reviewed articles.

Problem solving methods – are an indispensable part of the management and improvement of production. At the turn of decades, with the development of industry, specific techniques have been implemented and refined by the leaders in this field, such as Toyota, GE and Motorola. The foundation of problem solving is to find real root cause of the problem as soon as possible, its understanding and implementation of appropriate solutions that will ensure that the problem does not occur again. This paper provides an overview of methods and techniques to solve problems in the manufacturing plant Trelleborg Wheel Systems Sri Lanka, producing pneumatic tires for light agricultural machinery. These techniques are implemented as part of the Lean Six Sigma program.
Metody rozwiązywania problemów – są nieodzowną częścią systemów zarządzania i doskonalenia produkcji. Na przełomie dziesięcioleci wraz z rozwojem przemysłu poszczególne techniki były wdrażane i udoskonalane przez liderów tej dziedziny takich jak Toyota, GE czy Motorola. U podstaw rozwiązywania problemów produkcyjnych leży jak najszybsze dotarcie do źródła problemu, jego zrozumienie, a także wdrożenie odpowiednich działań/rozwiązań, które zapewnią iż problem ponownie nie wystąpi. W pracy tej przedstawiono przegląd metod i technik rozwiązywania problemów w zakładzie produkcyjnym Trelleborg Wheel Systems Sri Lanka, produkującym opony pneumatyczne do lekkich maszyn rolniczych. Techniki te są wdrażane jako część programu Lean Six Sigma.
