Opis:
The deer association composed of 'Cervus' cf. cusanus, 'Cervus' pardinensis, Croizetoceros ramosus, cf. Arvenoceros ardei indicates the late Pliocene age (zone MN 16) of the locality Węże 2. Outside Poland the species are known from France, Spain, Moldavia, and Ukraine. The composition of fauna indicates a woodland character of the habitat, with some open areas and vicinity of a water reservoir. The characters of dentition and wear of the crowns of teeth of the deer from Węże 2 suggest food containing both tree and bush leaves, and grasses.

Opis:
Seven species of chemosymbiotic bivalves are described from the late Pliocene Stirone River hydrocarbon seep complex in northern Italy, including one new species and two in open nomenclature. The known species are the solemyid Acharax doderleini, the lucinids Lucinoma persolida and Megaxinus ellipticus, and the vesicomyid Isorropodon aff. perplexum; in open nomenclature we report two lucinids, including the largest species of Lucinoma known from the Italian Pliocene to date, and a strongly inflated, large Anodontia sp. The most abundant species at the Stirone seep complex is the lucinid Megaxinus stironensis sp. nov. This Pliocene seep fauna differs from that of the well-known Miocene “Calcari a Lucina” seep deposits by lacking large bathymodiolin mussels and vesicomyid clams; instead, the dominance of the lucinid Megaxinus stironensis gives this fauna a unique character. We speculate that at the Stirone seep complex, Megaxinus had occupied the ecological niche that Meganodontia occupied at the Miocene “Calcari a Lucina” seep sites in the Mediterranean basin, and that the dominance of Megaxinus could be a wide-spread feature of Pliocene chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in Mediterranean Pliocene.

Opis:
The brown frogs (Rana temporaria-group) are a monophyletic group in the family Ranidae, which have a scarce fossil record in Europe that begins only in the Late Pliocene. A new fossil from the Dietrichsberg locality (Germany, Thuringia) extends their stratigraphic range back to the Early Miocene, and suggests that their origin lies outside the Western Palaearctic, most probably in Asia, with subsequent immigration in the Burdigalian.

Miocene–Pliocene molasses

Opis:
Normal faults of different orientations appear to be the youngest manifestations of faulting in the Carpathian Foredeep which is filled with Lower to Middle Miocene sediments. Structural studies of the Late Miocene–Pliocene(?) fresh-water molasses of the Witów Series and the overlying Late Pleistocene loessial complex provide a possibility to reconstruct the Late Neogene to Recent (?) stress field in the central part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep. Strata of such a young age are very rare in the foredeep, thus providing a key record of structural deformation during the latest stages of orogenic evolution of the Carpathian orogen. The molasses are cut by joints, and normal and strike-slip faults, formed in two successive events: (1) a syn-depositional one for the molasses (Late Miocene–Pliocene?), proceeding under NNW–SSE to N–S-oriented horizontal compression, possibly coeval with reactivation of a NE-striking sinistral fault of the Kurdwanów–Zawichost Fault Zone in the basement; (2) a post-depositional one for the molasses (Pliocene to Middle Pleistocene) during N–S to NE–SW-oriented extension, and (3) both syn- and post-depositional ones for the loessial complex (Late Pleistocene). In the first event, reactivation of the NE-striking sinistral fault led to formation of N–S-oriented joints, as well as NW-striking dextral, and NNW-trending normal faults. In the second event, both W–E and NW–SE – oriented joints andWNW-striking normal faults were formed. The latter most probably originated due to reactivation of the Early Palaeocene WNW- and NW-striking normal faults in the basement. In the third event, both NE–SW and NW–SE-oriented joints and NE-striking normal faults formed as a result of reactivation of the SW- and WSW-striking faults in the basement. Therefore, normal faults detected in the Carpathian Foredeep appear to be a result of different successive events. This extensional episode lasted at least to the Late Pleistocene. We also provide evidence for the recent, N- to NNE-directed, tectonic compressive stress, typical for that segment of the Carpathian arc. This stress resulted in the formation of an orthogonal system of joints striking N–S and W–E, produced during

Opis:
In the eastern Loess Plateau region of Northern China, the Quaternary loess-palaeosol se quences of the last 2.6 Ma are underlain by the Hipparion Red-Earth Formation (namely the "Red Clay"). The red clay is also a significant deposit in Hungary, the origin of which is controversial. This paper is a comparative study of the Central European (Hungarian) red clay succession and the Xifeng Red Clay profile, the type section for this deposits in the eastern Loess Plateau region. Optical microscopic and SEM analysis were used for grain-size measurements, and both major- and trace-element geochemical properties were analysed to ad dress the question of the origin of Hungarian red clay as well as its environmental implication. We compare the Xifeng Upper Red-Earth (age: ~3.6 to 2.6 Ma BP) with the Hungarian, Tengelic Red Clay Formation (age: ~3.5 to 1.0 Ma BP); both are aeolian deposits ~ genetically related to the Quaternary loess -palaeosol sequence.

Opis:
A new borehole in Rożce (SW Mazovian Lowland) drilled in 2012, combined with a wide variety of research methods (palaeomagnetism, palynological analysis, studies of plant macroremains and textural features of deposits) shed new light on the age and stratigraphic position of the Early Pleistocene deposits, formerly assigned as the Lower Pleistocene. The study focuses on the deposits from 50.7-104.0 m depth, between glacial till of the Nidanian Glaciation (ca. 0.9 Ma) and the Poznań Clays (ca. 5.322 Ma). The deposits situated directly underneath the till (50.7-60.2 m) are related to the Nidanian Glaciation and show a reversed polarity and correlate with the end of the Matuyama Epoch. The deposits from 60.2-104.0 m depth were accumulated during the Early Pliocene, i.e. approximately 5.332-4.6 million years ago. They appear to correlate with the middle part of the Gilbert Palaeomagnetic Epoch and thus they are considerably older than previously thought. The cored section indicates a stratigraphic gap of about 3.5 Ma from the Lower Pliocene to the first advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets into Poland, which are thought to have occurred in the early Middle Pleistocene. The analysed deposits accumulated under variable climatic conditions showing two periods with significant aridity alternated with two periods of increased humidity. Deposits of the arid periods contain no pollen, butaeolian sand quartz grains are found. During periods of more humid climate the area was covered by various types of mixed forest.
