Opis:
Bentonite clay from Maghnia (North West Algeria) has been acid-activated. The activated bentonite was employed as adsorbent for the removal of methyl green from aqueous solutions using adsorption method. The influence of several parameters (kinetics, contact time, sorbent amount, adsorbate concentration and pH) on the adsorption capacity was evaluated and discussed. The Langmuir adsorption model was applied to experimental equilibrium data and the isotherm constant was calculated. The results indicated that the adsorption was favourable at neutral pH. This model provided the best fit to the experimental data with high correlation coefficient (R²=0.996). The monolayer adsorption capacity of activated bentonite found to be 353.33 mg/g. It was seen that pseudo-first order equation describes the adsorption kinetics. The results indicated that this bentonite-type clay is potential to be used as an economical adsorbent for the removal of methyl green dye.

Opis:
The study’s aim was to develop a novel sorbent for removing the color Congo red (CR) from water by precipitating (Mg/Al)-layered double hydroxide (LDH) at the nanoscale onto the waterworks sludge surface as a byproduct. To achieve an effective sorbent with the removal of over 91.19%, The utilization of nanoparticles, the addition of 1 g of sludge to 50 mL of water, and a molar ratio of 2 (Mg/Al) were the optimal production conditions for sorbent. In batch experiments, the optimal operating parameters were found to be 0.5 g of adsorbent in 50 mL of CR, pH of CR solution equal to 3, and a contact time of 3 hours at 200 rpm with 25 mg/L dyes. According to the study, the adsorption capacity was 23.576 mg/g. Additionally, the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models provided accurate descriptions of the sorption data.

Opis:
Sorption of Methylene Blue (MB) and Malachite Green (MG) dyes onto barks and leaves of four trees was examined with a batch method. The obtained sorption isotherms are well described by the Langmuir equation. The examined barks proved to have quite different sorption capacities. The highest values were recorded for the walnut tree bark (512 and 307 mg/g towards the MB and MG dyes, respectively) and the lowest capacities were observed for the birch tree bark (68 and 22 mg/g towards the MB and MG dyes, respectively). The studied leaves proved to have rather similar sorption capacities, i.e., from 210 to 286 mg/g for the MB dye and from 152 to 189 mg/g for the MG dye. The specific surface values calculated from the MB monolayer capacity are substantially higher than those obtained by the BET method, probably because of swelling of the test materials in an aqueous medium.

Opis:
The possibilities of using a natural sorbent – peat for the wastewater treatment of ammonium ions and phosphates discharged from runoff into natural reservoirs at high concentrations were investigated. The peat of from the Vereshchytsya-Yanovske deposit of Ukraine of two depths: lowland and upland, was studied. It was established that the lowland samples of peat have higher sorption properties to the investigated pollutants from the aquatic environment than the upland ones. A greater moisture loss in the lowland peat species was observed, as well as the major part of the plant fibers in its structure, which explains its sorption properties. Due to the high content of humic substances, the extraction of cations from the water by peat can occur due to the ion exchange. The adsorption isotherms of both ammonium and phosphate ions on the top and lowland peat species of the Vereshchytsya-Yanovske deposit were constructed and presented. The adsorption isotherm obtained in the experimental studies was used to mathematically establish the isotherm equation, using the Langmuir and Freundlich models to describe the equilibrium of the sorption processes under study. The degree of appropriation of linear equations to the experimental data was evaluated on the basis of the deterministic coefficient, which enabled to determine that in each case the Langmuir equations describe the adsorption isotherms more adequately.

Opis:
The recycling of untreated dry biosolids, as costless biodegradable adsorbent for the removal of cadmium from aqueous phase was characterized. The adsorption of cadmium was reported to depend on initial pH, adsorbent dose, agitation time, and initial Cd concentration. The results of the batch experiments revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the untreated dry biosolids was 39.22 mg g-1 under optimum operating conditions (i.e. pH: 5, adsorbent dose: 2 g l-1, contact time: 16h). Adsorption reaches equilibrium after 16h, which can be attributed to both external surface adsorption (R2 = 0.86) and intraparticle dif usion (R2 = 0.98). The Langmuir isotherm model best described cadmium adsorption (R2 = 0.99) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was obeyed, suggesting that the mechanism involved was chemisorption. Biodegradability would make the recovery of adsorbed Cd an environmentally friendly process. Comparing the obtained findings with the related published results, it can be concluded that treating biosolids might be an unnecessary and costly procedure for recycling biosolids as an adsorbent for cadmium.

The potential of rice husks powder (RHP), for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch adsorption studies were conducted and various parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, pH and temperature were studied to observe their effects in the dye adsorption process. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of CR onto the adsorbent (RHP) was found to be: contact time (100 min) pH (10.0) and temperature (303 K) for an initial dye concentration of 50 mg/l and adsorbent dose of 1.0 g respectively. The experimental equilibrium adsorption data fitted best and well to the Freundlich Isotherm model for both dyes adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 33.88 mg/g for the adsorption of CR dye. The kinetic data conformed to the pseudo second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic quantities such as Gibbs free energy (ΔGº), enthalpy (ΔHº) and entropy (ΔSº) were evaluated and the negative values of ΔGº, ΔHº and ΔSº obtained indicate the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process.

Opis:
The Langmuir monolayer technique and voltammetric analysis were used to investigate the properties of model lipid membranes prepared from dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), hexadecaprenol (C80), and their mixtures. Surface pressure- molecular area isotherms, current-voltage characteristics, and membrane conductance-temperature were measured. Molecular area isobars, specific molecular areas, excess free energy of mixing, collapse pressure and collapse area were determined for lipid monolayers. Membrane conductance, activation energy of ion migration across the membrane, and membrane permeability coefficient for chloride ions were determined for lipid bilayers. Hexadecaprenol decreases the activation energy and increases membrane conductance and membrane permeability coefficient. The results of monolayer and bilayer investigations show that some electrical, transport and packing properties of lipid membranes change under the influence of hexadecaprenol. The results indicate that hexadecaprenol modulates the molecular organisation of the membrane and that the specific molecular area of polyprenol molecules depends on the relative concentration of polyprenols in membranes. We suggest that hexadecaprenol modifies lipid membranes by the formation of fluid microdomains. The results also indicate that electrical transmembrane potential can accelerate the formation of pores in lipid bilayers modified by long chain polyprenols.

Opis:
The bedrock opoka has been lately reported as an appropriate reactive media for onsite wastewater treatment systems due to its high phosphorus (P) sorption capacity. However, variations on its chemical composition may affect its reactivity with P, therefore leading to a variable P removal effi ciency. In this paper, the P-sorption capacity of three different types of opoka from the region of Miechów, Poland, is reported. According to the silica and carbonate content, opoka samples were classifi ed as light--weight and heavy-weight opoka. When heated over 900°C, opoka showed a very high P-sorption capacity that was well correlated to its Ca content. P-sorption isotherms from batch experiments with an artifi cial P solution were plotted and fi tted to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The Freundlich isotherm appeared to model better the P-sorption of light opoka and the Langmuir isotherm of heavy opoka, suggesting different dominating mechanisms of P-sorption by light and heavy opoka.
