    Soft-sediment deformation structures formed by liquefaction and/or fluidisation of unconsolidated sediments due to seismic shocks are frequent in the Quaternary sandy, silty and clayey deposits of Lake Van. They are present in both marginal and deep lacustrine facies. Their morphology and interpreted genesis imply that they should be considered as fluid-escape structures (dish and pillar structures, flame structures and sand volcanoes), contorted structures (simple and complex convolutions and ball-and-pillow structures) and other structures (disturbed layers and slump structures). The most recently formed structures are related to the October 23rd, 2011 Van-Tabanlı (Mw 7.2) earthquake. The exist-ence of seismites at various stratigraphic levels in the lacustrine deposits is indicative of tectonic activity that frequently triggered earthquakes with magnitudes of 5 or more, affecting the Lake Van Basin.

    Opis:
    Travertine formation is one of the most important archives of active tectonics in a region and provides information about climate, water temperature and quantity, and biological activity. The Edremit travertines and tufas extend over nearly160 km2 within the boundaries of the Edremit area to the east of Lake Van (eastern Turkey), and yield important evidence towards understanding the neotectonics of the region. The Edremit travertines and tufas were studied throughout their full stratigraphic extent, the factors controlling the formation of these deposits were examined, and the succession was sampled for U/Th analysis. Travertine formation was found to occur from 542–29.7 ka, with two different tufa formation periods: from 29.7–5.8 ka and 5.8–2.08 ka. Pauses in travertine formation (palaeosols) were identified from 510–470 ka, 289–269 ka and 91–34 ka. Our study showed that climate parameters affected the formation of tufa, while the Edremit travertines developed under the control of tectonism. The Van Fault is directly associated with travertine development and its age was identified as 542 ka or older. Since the Gürpιnar Fault, one of the most important faults in the region, is effective in shaping the southern slope of the travertines and limiting the movement of the Van Fault, its age should be younger than 542.4 ka. The Elmalιk Fault played an active role in the formation of the Edremit tufas and is proposed to be 29.7 ka in age, from stratigraphic relationships in the region.

    A collection of nine letters from the Catholic theologian Romano Guardini to his friend Fr. Josef Weiger was published in 1927. In Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s library of several hundred items, it was a book that he used to formulate the basic principles of his own architecture. The aim of the paper is to present the content of Guardini’s book and its influence on the views and work of Mies van der Rohe. The architect’s insightful monographs, especially the book by Fritz Neumeyer, accurately document the relationship between the theologian’s statements and attempts to adapt them to the theory of architecture. The more recent analysis of these relationships presented in the article leads to the conclusion that Mies van der Rohe set himself the task of finding a pure spirit in the world of pure abstractions. His creative involvement was a form of contemplating and developing forces which, although contained in nature or technology, can also be considered transcendent.
    Zbiór dziewięciu listów katolickiego teologa Romana Guardiniego do jego przyjaciela ks. Josefa Weigera opublikowany został w roku 1927. W liczącej kilkaset pozycji bibliotece Ludwiga Mies van der Rohego była to książka o wyjątkowym znaczeniu, która posłużyła mu do sformułowania podstawowych zasad własnej architektury. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie treści książki Guardiniego oraz jej wpływu na poglądy i twórczość Mies van der Rohego. Wnikliwe monografie poświęcone temu architektowi, w tym zwłaszcza książka Fritza Neumeyera, dokładnie dokumentują związki między wypowiedziami teologa a próbami ich adaptacji do teorii architektury. Przedstawiona w niniejszym artykule nowa analiza tych związków prowadzi do wniosku, że Mies van der Rohe postawił sobie zadanie odnalezienia czystego ducha w świecie czystych abstrakcji. Jego twórcze zaangażowanie było formą kontemplowania i rozwijania sił, które jakkolwiek zawarte w naturze czy technice, mogą być też uznane za transcendentne.

    Dumpstones and dropstones up to 0.8 m in size occur in a silty/sandy Weichselian glaciolacustrine succession near Dwasieden on Rügen Island in the SW Baltic Sea (NE Germany). The deposits are exceptional because two levels of dumpstones and dropstones are present, suggesting two dumping phases interrupting characteristic fine-grained glaciolacustrine sedimentation. Plastic downwarping of sediments below the dumpstones and dropstones result in soft-sediment deformation structures. The distribution and orientation of the long axes of the clasts are useful tools for the reconstruction of the state of the lake bottom, as well as for the water depth. The horizontal position of the gravels and boulders (parallel to the bedding) suggests deposition in relatively shallow-water. The dumping events are linked to iceberg rafting in a glacial lake during the Weichselian Glaciation (MIS 2).
