    The subject matter of our considerations here is the concept of classical logic. The author begins with a brief etymological reflection and a presentation of some views ancient philosophers had (from Heraclitus to Plato) and inspired Aristotle’s and stoic discussion of logic. They brought about the first systems of formal logic and rich outlines of other branches of logic in their broad understanding, such as the methodology of sciences and semiotics. Aristotle’s logical discoveries (mainly syllogistic logic of assertoric propositions, syllogistic logic of modal propositions, and theory of scientific proof), and stoics’ discoveries (logic of propositions and semiotics) are the first, highly advanced approaches to classical logic. The later history of logic consisted mainly in the reception of those ancient achievements, or in their semantic enrichment.

    Opis:
    Izydora Dąmbska presented her views on the semiotics of proper names in her two studies: O bezimienności [On Namelessness] and Filozofia imion własnych [Philosophy of Proper Names]. The author refers mainly to the second work. I. Dąmbska begins with a syntactic definition of proper name, then she attempts to define the basic semantic function of proper name, that is, the function of naming. She emphasises the essential difference between this function of proper names and the function of denotation played by descriptive names. The difference consists in the fact that a descriptive name denotes an individual object as a representative of a respective class, whereas a proper name names an individual person without any class references. A name represents an individual by way of universaliter, i.e. in its many aspects and as one despite differences in the course of his whole life. As such, the proper name represents a conscious object of knowledge and agency. It mediates in personal relations between people and is the material of legends and history, affirms the unity of its bearer, and ensures his duration beyond death and grave. Its secondary meaning is that it plays the function of naming and representing also fictionary literary figures.

    The restoration of Poland’s sovereignty as the Second Polish Republic after the First War World is the subject of historical research and political discussion. However, this article focuses on the question of the place of this event in the informal collective Polish memory. An important data source are the results of the “Niepodległa ’18” research conducted by the National Centre for Culture, Poland (NCK) and TNS Polska in 2016. This paper focuses on four areas: (1) transmission of knowledge on the sovereignty restoration, (2) images of notable people (3) significant events of the time and (4) perceptions of Polish society attitudes at the beginning of the twentieth century.

    From the outset, the 1905 revolution was a place of conflict of memory revealing the political and social divisions existing in the Polish society. In the interwar period (1918–1939), three “legends” were formed: the left assessed the revolution positively and highlighted the relevance of its experiences, the ruling camp emphasized the independence dimension, and the right strongly criticized the revolution. After 1989 the conflict was renewed. The objective of the right-wing communities and parties influencing the historical policy of the state is to exclude the 1905 revolution from the national tradition and remove its symbols from public space. For the left-wing representatives, who are the minority, the years 1905–1907 are an important collective experience that requires a new interpretation and commemorating.

    Artykuł omawia polityki pamięci państw Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym w czterech obszarach. Pierwszy dotyczy sporów wokół daty uzyskania (albo odzyskania) niepodległości, względnie zjednoczenia kraju. Kolejny – pomników usuwanych i erygowanych po 1918 r. Trzeci przybliża losy grobów wojennych i upamiętnień poległych w I wojnie światowej i w walkach o niepodległość i granice. Ostatni analizuje okoliczności i symbolikę grobów nieznanego żołnierza. The article presents policies of memory pursued in the interwar period by the states of Central and Eastern Europe, on the basis of four groups of examples. The first one concerns controversies around the date of gaining (or regaining) independence, or unification of the country. The next one – monuments removed or erected after 1918. The third group focuses on the fate of war graves and commemoration places of people killed during the Great War and in fights for independence and frontiers, while the last one analyses the circumstances and symbolism of unknown soldiers’ graves.

    The subject of this article is the use of public consultations in the process of planning a participatory museum. The authors start by mentioning current discussions about participation in culture and debates among museum curators, culture experts, and sociologists concerning a new type of museum. In this context, they present Nina Simon’s idea of a participatory museum, which is a theoretic frame of reference for the long-term activities of the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek, an institution desiring to establish a modern participatory museum in a certain social context. At the end, the results of the public consultations are presented. The data shows that one condition for the creation of a participatory museum is an effective, institutionalized, interactive system of communication. Three areas connected with the local community in which the museum could develop participatory projects were also indicated: the joint creation of memorial sites, community integration, and exhibition and educational activities.

    Conclusion The principal objective of the book at hand was to disentangle the threads of the fabric comprising the way Poles think about their national identity. Within the framework of that identity’s structure, we endeavored to distinguish key elements which logically organize their reasoning; we delved deeper in order to reach other elements which are merely derivative or only incidentally linked to the way Polishness is envisioned. The sense of Polish national belonging is characterized by stability; this was demonstrated by the data drawn from both our quantitative survey research and qualitative in-depth interviews. The structural constellation of its determinants remains largely impervious to fundamental systemic transformations, international political networks, and economic changes (in other words, civilizational shifts). Since the beginning of our longitudinal research project in 1988 (the last year of centralized, soviet socialism), the most vital criteria for establishing the Polishness of an individual remain: 1) a feeling of being Polish, and 2) fluency in the Polish language. Certainly, the emphasis placed on each criterion in the thinking about Polishness has shifted on a societal scale, but these have not been radical changes. The criteria assessed as important and very important by the vast majority of Polish society three decades ago continue to be at the top of the list of conditions to be met for national identity. Seeking the causes for this clarity and sharpness in the model of Polishness functioning in the social consciousness of Poles, we can look precisely at the changing environs which constantly impinge upon the solidity of the Polish national identity. Underpinning this are the contemporary core values, as Jerzy Smolicz understood them (1981). Apart 195 Ewa Nowicka, Sławomir Łodziński from the exceptionally deeply incised contents encompassed by and effectively upholding the concept of Polishness, certain tendencies towards change can be observed. These include the decreased importance 1) of the criterion of confessing Roman Catholicism, and 2) of exceptional service, bravery, and sacrifice on behalf of Poland (which always occupied last place in rankings). The findings of our research project – based on both the quantitative as well as qualitative data – point to key constitutive criteria on which the collective contemporary vision of Polishness is built. Communality is constructed around individually harbored beliefs; these do differ in many ways, but they share in common a spectrum of the intellectual code which coalesces those beliefs to a crucial degree. The main content of that intellectual code is something universally underlined by our respondents: knowledge of the history and culture of Poland. A key issue when investigating both variety and similarity in individually-constructed images of Polishness is how these form the ties that bind Poles together. Very important is what connects Poles in a single cultural community despite its internal diversity. The results of our research project show that this is not only a cultural community, but something that can be described as an imagined political community. Furthermore, it turns out that colloquially expressed ideas that Poles build their national community on the basis of common biological ancestry (ius sanguinis) are false. The cornerstones of the dominant pattern of Polishness are a rooted inclusivism on the part of the Polish national community. The continuity and durability of specific convictions associated with a sense of Polishness can be explained by two things. Firstly, there is the power of cultural transmission taking place on all levels – from the familial, through the educations, and finishing with the mass media. Secondly, there is the unequivocal comprehension of the concept of national community which is universal across all nations. The potency of the Polish national community does not stand in contradiction with a strongly European identification and Poles seeing 196 Chapter VIII. Conclusion themselves as inhabitants of this continent. The boundaries of belonging to Polish society are demarcated on a similar basis as other European societies: Polish boundaries are also defined by criteria associated with consciousness and with culture. It can be assumed that the increased intensity of intercultural contacts over the last 30 years – both due to the arrival of culturally diverse foreigners to Poland and to short- or long-term emigration by Poles – is related to a change in attitudes towards a multicultural society and the national identity. Those persons who have experienced emigration in different roles and historical periods – individually or as members of groups treated as clearly distinct – have different personal experiences and thus assess not only relations between various national groups differently, but also describe and comprehend their Polishness differently. Due to the massive increase in the number of Polish temporary or permanent emigrations over recent decades, the impact of intercultural and interethnic contact is gaining in importance. Another matter is the recently enhanced contact with persons of other nationalities (most often economic migrants) within Poland. It appears that contact with others and especially “strangers” not only does not liquify Polishness, but, in fact, can provide it with new sense and meaning. Being a Pole can mean simply belonging to the collective group of Poles. Worth adding here is that the research experience we have gained facilitated perception of the problems our respondents had with some of the issues touched in this study. Both in the quantitative surveys and in the course of the qualitative in-depth interviews it was clear that certain questions posed great challenges for the participants in this project. A few difficulties arose especially in respondent interpretations of specific concepts we proposed. One of these was the category of extraordinary, meritorious service to the country which respondents tended to understand as meaning rather ordinary things such as obeying the law, working honestly, paying taxes, etc. Should this research project be continued into the future, it would be worth paying special attention to the 197 Ewa Nowicka, Sławomir Łodziński list of criteria of Polishness. Added to the list of conditions to be met by a foreigner who seeks recognition as a Pole should be “obeying Polish law” or something similar. Furthermore, worth undertaking in the future would be a more detailed, thorough inquiry into a few issues. Above all it would be good to concentrate (especially comparatively) on the circumstances which lead to a fading or to a fortifying of various national identities. Yet another matter which we would like to examine up close is the nuances secreted in the links between Polishness and Roman Catholicism – that is, the changing forms of religiosity vis-à-vis convictions held about the national community.

    Prof. Marek Kwiatkowski, born on 25 April 1930 in Caen in France, passed away on 10 August 2016 in Warsaw. He was a historian of art, a museum professional, a historian of Warsaw, the author of a dozen books, an academic lecturer and an outstanding expert in architecture from the Stanisław August period. From 1995 he held the post of Director of the Royal Łazienki Museum. He devoted 48 years of his life to this magnificent historical palace and garden complex founded in the 18th century. For his numerous services to the field of culture, art and tradition he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the Capital City of Warsaw as well as Honorary Citizen of the Węgrów District. He was also awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Order of St. Stanislaus, the Order of St. Prince Lazar and the Order of the Smile. In 2005 he was also decorated with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Services to Culture.
    Prof. Marek Kwiatkowski urodził się 25 kwietnia 1930 r. w Caen we Francji, zmarł 10 sierpnia 2016 r. w Warszawie. Był historykiem sztuki, muzealnikiem, varsavianistą, autorem kilkudziesięciu książek, nauczycielem akademickim oraz wybitnym znawcą architektury z czasów króla Stanisława Augusta. Od 1995 r. pełnił funkcję dyrektora Muzeum Łazienki Królewskie. Temu historycznemu, wspaniałemu zespołowi pałacowo-ogrodowemu założonemu w XVIII w. przez Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego poświęcił w sumie 48 lat swojego życia, dając z siebie w pracy wszystko. Za swoje liczne zasługi w zakresie kultury, sztuki i tradycji otrzymał tytuł Honorowego Obywatela m.st. Warszawy, a także Honorowego Obywatela Powiatu Węgrowa. Przyznano mu również Krzyż Komandorski Odrodzenia Polski, Złoty Krzyż Zasługi, Order św. Stanisława, Order św. Łazarza i Order Uśmiechu, zaś w 2005 r. został odznaczony Złotym Medalem Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis.

    The aim of the paper was to analyze: training effectiveness in the preparatory period, changes in contestants’ aerobic and anaerobic capacity in the preparatory period, changes in contestants’ motor abilities in the preparatory period, to compare the level of selected parameters of anaerobic capacity measured by means of Wingate test and aerobic capacity measured by means of Beep-test of kickboxing contestants with the results of contestants training similar martial arts. The research has been carried out on three contestants of UKS Gladiator Club who achieve high sports results. An analysis of obtained results shows that the training employed in the preparatory phase has been appropriately planned and effective enough. Both aerobic and anaerobic capacity in the preparatory phase has increased significantly. Anaerobic capacity of the examined contestants is higher than capacity of the contestants in the control group. Their aerobic capacity, on the other hand, is lower than in the control group. When planning further training in the future greater attention should be paid to developing aerobic capacity.

    The aim of this study is to evaluate validity and reliability of a new special kickboxing fitness test. The test can be also useful in such combat sports as karate, taekwondo, ju-jitsu and MMA. The study group was 25 elite level athletes from the KS Gladiator club in Grybów. The test was repeated in the same group for three times. In order to evaluate test reliability, test results were compared to the results obtained by study participants in two special fitness tests proposed by Sterkowicz1 . The statistical analysis of the results was also performed. The analysis of the results presented in this study shows that the specific character of the movements typical of the kickboxing fight justifies the introduction of the tests based on kicks and punches to the test battery that evaluates special fitness. Furthermore, the new special fitness test proposed in this study can be used for selection and interpretation of the achievements of kickboxers since it offers a reliable, valid and user-friendly research tool.

    The aim of the paper it to analyze the effectiveness of training of fighters of UKS Gladiator Club in the preparatory phase and to analyze training loads used during that time. Participants included a group of 12 fighters of UKS Gladiator Club who have achieved high sports results – this group includes medalists of Polish Championships and of the Cup of Europe. Test were carried three times in the preparatory phase. Physical fitness parameters have been evaluated by means of selected tests of EUROFIT testing battery. Summing up, it should be noted that an important cognitive element of the research carried out is an observation of improvement of the level of physical fitness in case of the majority of investigated features, which was the intended effect of training in the preparatory phase. The adopted training load has caused an average increase of investigated parameters, which proves training effectiveness.

    The article proposes an adaptive algorithm that generates all object signals, including those for which measurements are not performed due to the difficulties associated with on-line measurements. The algorithm is modeled on the idea of the Kalman filter using its equation, however, the selection of gains is optimized in a different way, i.e. the constant values depend on the adopted ranges of adaptation errors. Moreover, the knowledge of the statistics of all noise signals is not imposed and there is no linearity constraint. This approach allowed to reduce the complexity of calculations. This algorithm can be used in real-time systems to generate signals of objects described by non-linear differential equations and it is universal, which allows it to be used for various objects. In the conducted research, on the example of a biochemically contaminated river, only easily measurable signals were used to generated the object signals, and in addition, in the case of absence some measurements, the functioning of the algorithm did not destabilize.

Water quality is represented by the following indicators: Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Dissolved Oxygen. Simulation studies were performed for a mathematical model of in the form of partial differential equations II-th order, which takes into account the phenomenon of diffusion, and flow velocity.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest Gdyni, która jako port, a później i miasto stała się oknem Polski na świat. Wobec ustanowienia miasta Gdańska Wolnym Miastem, pod protektoratem Ligi Narodów i niemieckich wpływów tamże – Polskę de facto pozbawiono portu na Bałtyku, a otrzymaliśmy wtedy 147 km wybrzeża. Od decyzji o budowie gdyńskiego portu (ustawa sejmowa z 23 września 1922 roku upoważniająca rząd polski do działania) do uruchomienia portu (10 lutego 1926 roku) upłynęły 4 lata, a do wojny Gdynia z rybackiej wsi przeistoczyła się w 130 tysięczne miasto.
