Opis:: The article examines the most significant semantic changes and transpositions that can be found in Zenon Przesmycki’s translation of the seminal sonnet Langueur written by Paul Verlaine in the second half of the nineteenth century. It closely analyzes the way in which the translation was used by Polish scholars of literary history. Having influenced the vision of culture nurtured by the so-called Decadent Movement in fin-de-siècle Europe, Verlaine’s poem was then employed in numerous academic studies as an illustration of the philosophy and the attitude towards society that were dominant in the period under discussion. In Poland, Przesmycki’s translation played an important role in defining the very term “decadent,” as several influential researchers used it in their analyses in order to provide their readers with Polish equivalents of the original French terms. As a result, Przesmycki’s version of Verlaine’s sonnet, although intended just as a poetic translation, served a different purpose from the ones that its translator could have ever imagined. It helped define and describe the culture of “decadent” Europe as a whole. The terminology Przesmycki used to translate the French words, such as langueur and decadence (“niemoc” and “wielkie konanie” respectively), was thus introduced into the Polish scholarly debate on European modernism. Premised upon the idea of cultural transfer (transfert culturel), the analysis presented in the article helps determine the extent to which Przesmycki’s translation shaped the Polish perception of fin-de-siècle Europe.

Opis:: The present article is concerned with the history of two small tenement-houses in Mostowa Street in Warsaw's New Town. One of them, at number 27, with a two-storey, three-axis façade and a characteristic bay in the middle that runs through both stories and is sided by two Corinthian columns, was built by the then young architect of the city of Warsaw Alfons Kropiwnicki in the years 1828-1829. Kropiwnicki was starting his long work and his long list of buildings connected mainly with Warsaw. The house survived unchanged until the Warsaw Uprising when it was burnt. Its façade, rebuilt after the war, received a brick oriel instead of the original wooden one, with a triangular coping on its axis. The tenement-house beside it, at number 24/25, contrary to the previous one, is now completely new. It was built after the war in the place of two completely destroyed houses, one of which, two-storey with a three-axis façade, was built by the architect Fryderyk Albert Lessel in 1818. In 1850 the house – together with the neighbouring two-axis one – was bought by Izabela Boretti, on whose initiative about 1865 they were both functionally joined and “renovated”, which was done by the architect Ludwik Bethier. In the years 1954-1955 in their place one two-storey tenement house was built (the main designer was Anna Boye-Guerquin) with a uniform five-axis classicist façade, in the style of F. A. Lessl's architecture.

Opis:: The purpose of this paper is to present a new model of social inhibition (a) conceptualised as a dual structured construct including shyness and modesty, and (b) showing the complexity and diversity of these two social inhibition forms across various domains of psychosocial functioning (i.e., self-image, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural). Locating these two forms of social inhibition within the space of the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits enabled us to identify conceptually adjacent constructs to social inhibition and put the latter into a broad personality context. Through supplementary meta-analyses of the relations of shyness and modesty with the Big Five personality traits, we confront our theoretical proposition with existing empirical findings. Our paper implies that social inhibition might be successfully treated as a psychosocial disposition with two related and shared core elements, but distinct and differentially targeted forms—more neurotic and dysfunctional shyness and more agreeable and adaptive modesty.

Opis:: Środowisko jazzowe jest zdominowane przez mężczyzn, co pociąga za sobą różne konsekwencje dla chcących uczestniczyć w nim kobiet. W artykule przedstawiam sytuację instrumentalistek jazzowych, które spotykają się z przejawami seksizmu we wszystkich obszarach swojej działalności oraz z dyskryminacją na rynku pracy. Opisuję również esencje męskości (głównie jazzmani) i kobiecości (przede wszystkim wokalistki) jako dwa dostępne wzorce zachowania w tej grupie. Dodatkowo, staram się wyodrębnić różne strategie przetrwania, po które sięgają kobiety w tym zmaskulinizowanym środowisku. Artykuł oparty jest na badaniach etnograficznych przeprowadzonych w Trójmieście w latach 2017-2019 wśród instrumentalistów oraz instrumentalistek jazzowych.
The jazz environment is dominated by men, which leads to many different consequences for women who want to participate in it. In this article, I depict the situation of female jazz instrumentalists who face sexism in every area of their activity and discrimination in the labour market. I also describe the essences of masculinity (mainly jazzmen) and femininity (mostly female vocalists) as two possible behaviour patterns in the group. In addition, I try to extract several different strategies which women use to survive in this masculinized environment. The article is based on the ethnographic research conducted in Trójmiasto in 2017-2019 among male and female jazz instrumentalists.

The author draws conclusions from permanent civilization changes resulting in a renaissance of interest in identity issues. The attention is focused on young people’s self-analysis. The analysis reconstructs individual cultural codes of high school students. The documentary materials are pupils’ work devoted to their own reflection on the value of culture and the search for a place in family, neighborhood, local, national and global traditions.
