Opis:
This study examined the relationship among sports participation, self-perception and gender role orientation of adolescent female students in Kwara State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. 240 respondents were sampled from public secondary schools in Kwara State through simple random sampling technique; eight (8) public secondary schools were selected. Stratified and proportionate sampling techniques were used to select 20% of students by class. The research instrument was a self-structured close ended questionnaire. The data collection was conducted by the researcher and three (3) research assistants. Three null hypotheses were tested using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistic at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed no significant relationship between self-perception and sports participation, there was significant relationship between gender role orientation and sports participation. Also, there was significant relationship between social interaction and sports participation among the adolescent female students. The study recommends that the concept of sports should be promoted among the students while female students should be given equal opportunity in sports as their male counterpart. Also all students should be encouraged to participate in sports in order to promote social relationship with other students.

Aggressive behaviour is a menace that has lasting consequences on the victims and the perpetrator, which could result in school avoidance, poor academic performance, dropout, and others. Thus, the study investigated the correlation between self-concept and aggressive behaviour among undergraduate students of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The stratified random sampling technique was adopted to select 720, with 386 male and 334 female participants. An instrument titled “Self-concept and Aggressive Behaviour Questionnaire (SABQ)” was used to collect data for the study. The instrument was subjected to test-retest reliability, and a value of r=77 was obtained. The research questions were answered using mean summation and average, while the hypotheses were tested with Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and the t-test statistics. The results revealed a low level of self-concept among respondents; males have a lower self-concept than female undergraduate students. There was a high level of aggressive behaviour among respondents; males have more aggressive behaviour than females. There was significant mean difference between male and female respondents in their self-concept and aggressive behaviour. It was recommended that school guidance counsellors design and implement programmes that could enhance self-concept and reduce aggressive behaviour among undergraduate students of universities.

Objective. The study examines the personal health practices of small scale farmers in Kwara State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods. Primary data were obtained using a well-structured questionnaire which was distributed to 120 small scale farmers. Descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency count, percentages were used, as well as Pearson Product Moment correlation and analysis for empirical analysis. Results. Results revealed that more than half (55%) smoke cigarettes, about 48% drink alcohol to a very great extent, while the majority (64.5%) indicated they have not been screened to know their HIV status. On a positive note, the results further show that the majority 70%, 53.3%, 80% and 73.3% indicated that they eat a balance diet, engage in physical activity, practice safer sex, and regularly visit a health care centre, respectively. It also revealed that 77% have not attended any training on healthy living. The results of PPMC showed that the health knowledge of respondents had significant (p<0.01) influence on practices like cigarette smoking, eating a balance diet and regular visits to a health care centre. Conclusion. It was concluded that health threatening practices such as cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol among the majority of the respondents, coupled with their lack of health knowledge from health professionals, contributes to the poor health status of respondents which eventually negatively influences the labour efficiency of farmers. It is recommended that farmers should endeavour to make use of health literacy programmes introduced to them at local government level, and that the government should provide more of these health literacy programmes.

Opis:
In a bid to strengthen the agricultural sector in Nigeria, the Kwara State Government invited thirteen Zimbabwean farmers to participate in agricultural production in Kwara State in 2004. The main objective of this study therefore was to examine the effect of the activities of these foreign farmers on local farmers’ poverty status. A questionnaire was administered on the heads of farming households. A total of 240 respondents were used for the study, which was comprised of 120 contact and 120 non-contact heads of farming households. The analytical tools employed included descriptive statistics and the Foster, Greer and Thorbecke method. The result indicated that the non-contact farming households are poorer than the contact farming households. Using the disaggregated poverty profile, poverty is most severe among the age group of above 60 years. The intensity of poverty is also higher among the married group than the singles. Based on the education level, poverty seems to be most severe among those without any formal education. It is therefore recommended that a minimum of secondary school education should be encouraged among the farming households to prevent higher incidence of poverty in the study area.
W ramach starań o wzmocnienie sektora rolniczego w Nigerii w 2004 roku władze stanu Kwara zaprosiły trzynastu zimbabweńskich rolników do udziału w stanowej produkcji rolnej. Głównym celem badania była analiza wpływu działalności zagranicznych rolników na poziom ubóstwa wśród rolników lokalnych. Kwestionariusz skierowano do osób zarządzających gospodarstwami rolnymi.

Opis:
The actual yield of rice in Nigeria has not been able to reach its potential. Consequently, the cost of rice importation is alarming. However, rice yield varies under various production systems. Therefore, this study examines the determinants of yield gap in rainfed and irrigated rice production systems in Kwara state, Nigeria. Gross Margin Budgetary analysis, Stochastic Frontier, and Linear Regression Model were respectively used to estimate the profitability, technical efficiency, and determinants of yield gap in both production systems. The result shows that rice production is more profitable and efficient under the irrigated rice production system than the rainfed rice production system. It was also discovered that the significant determinants of yield gap in both production systems vary. However, the size of farm cultivated and the rice variety planted are common significant determinants of yield gap in both systems. This research therefore recommends that irrigation facilities and improved rice variety should be made available to farmers. Additionally, policy makers should formulate policies that would enable rice farmers to have access to larger farm lands.
Niniejsze badanie dotyczy zatem uwarunkowań wydajności w nawadnianych naturalnie (deszczem) i sztucznie nawadnianych uprawach ryżu w nigeryjskim stanie Kwara. Do oszacowania rentowności, efektywności technicznej i uwarunkowań skutkujących niedostateczną wydajnością w obu systemach produkcji wykorzystano odpowiednio budżetową analizę marży brutto, stochastyczną analizę graniczną oraz model regresji liniowej. Na podstawie niniejszego badania można zatem zalecić, aby rolnikom zostały udostępnione urządzenia nawadniające i udoskonalone odmiany ryżu w odpowiednim zakresie i we właściwych terminach. Ponadto decydenci polityczni powinni opracować strategie, które umożliwią producentom ryżu dostęp do gospodarstw o większej powierzchni.

Opis:
This paper assesses the residents’ access to public pipe-borne water in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. The authors analyzed spatial distribution and functionality of public pipe-borne water. They also examined intra-urban variation in the distribution of public pipe-borne water in the study area. The study used primary data which were obtained through random sampling techniques of 400 households, using structured questionnaire in the twelve political administrative wards of the examined area. Physical enumeration was also adopted to identify the functional and non-functional public pipe-borne water points. Descriptive statistics in the form of frequency table and percentages with chi-square were used to describe residents’ demand and accessibility of public pipe-borne water. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to examine intra-urban variations in the functionality of public pipe-borne water. The results revealed that distribution of public pipe-borne water cut across different localities in the twelve political administrative wards that Ilorin West Local Government consisted of. Although the highest proportion (60.24%) of public pipe-borne water points were observed to be functioning, a significant proportion (39.26%) were not functioning. The highest proportion (95.5%) of the respondents were of the opinion that public pipe-borne water is not regularly available. The findings from Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences (F=2.702, P=0.004) in the functioning of public pipe-borne water infrastructural elements existing in the examined area. The study concludes by suggesting the need for the government to ensure regular public water supply to meet the residents’ daily needs for water consumption and domestic use, which continue to increase every day.
W artykule dokonano oceny dostępu mieszkańców do publicznej sieci wodociągowej w rejonie Ilorin West Local Government w stanie Kwara w Nigerii. Autorzy przeanalizowali przestrzenną dystrybucję i funkcjonalność publicznej wody wodociągowej. Analiza wariancji (ANOVA) została wykorzystana do zbadania różnic wewnątrzmiejskich w funkcjonalności publicznej wody rurowej.

Background. Sports betting has been shown to be escalating among youths in developing countries. However, there is still insufficient information on the predictors of sports betting among this particular social group. The aim of this study was to examine social predictors of sports betting among youths in Ilorin, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Material and methods. A cross-sectional community survey was conducted among 470 youths from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Social predictors of sports betting (SPSB) were evaluated using a 23-item questionnaire consisting of three parts: Part I - socio-demographic variables (age, gender, employment status); Part II –items on sports betting engagement (SBE); and Part III - items on family influence, peer influence, and media influence. Frequency and percentage, the phi coefficient, and binary logistic regression were used for analyses. Results. The findings revealed a weak relationship between sports betting and family influence (=.218); a moderate relationship between sports betting and peer influence (=.523), and a moderate relationship between sports betting and media influence (=.559). Gender and employment status were significantly associated with sports betting (p < .05). Conclusion. The study showed that family influence, peer influence, media influence, and employment status were predictors of sports betting among Nigerian youths. Gambling regulatory bodies, parents, educators, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should sensitize young people on the dangers of engaging in sports betting as a sustainable source of income.

The potentials of ICTs in fish farming has not been fully harnessed by farmers in Nigeria. This study assessed farmers’ awareness of the use of ICTs in fish farming, determined level of use, identified the determinants of use, and the constraints to the use of ICTs in fish farming. A two-stage random sampling technique was applied to select 133 respondents on whom a questionnaire was administered. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Multiple Regression Analysis and the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. Respondents’ level of awareness of the use of ICTs in fish farming was high (71.4%), but use was low (48.3%). The major constraint to the use of ICTs was the high cost of internet subscription (M = 3.53). At p < 0.001, number of ponds (β = 0.095), cosmopoliteness (β = 0.271), household size (β = 0.159) and frequency of extension contact (β = 0.078) determined the use of ICTs. Also, awareness of ICTs had a significant relationship with its use (r = 0.339, p < 0.01). The study concluded that the level of use of ICTs in fish farming in the state was low in spite of a high level of awareness.
