    After the second world war about 4 mln Poles found themselves abroad after they had left Poland in 1939-1945. Their need for reading caused an enormous development of Polish bookshops and publications abroad. Many Polish bookshops were founded in a number of countries such as Great Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, the U.S.A., Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Australia. Beside selling the books and magazines, the bookshops played an additional role of clubs of Polish culture and centres for the Poles scattered all over the world. In the early fifties most of the bookshops were closed down as a consequence of stabilization and repatriation. Only those which could cope with the new conditions managed to survive; namely those which understood hit was not longer the immigrant book itself but also the links with the culture of the country of origin that constituted the basis for their future existence. Today, the number of the Polish bookshops abroad is even smaller but nearly all of them are fearly firm. They sell books and magazines in Polish and in other foreign languages, records, tapes and cassetes, replicas, stamps, artistic goods etc. Polonia does not read much; 80% do not know Polish and thus never read in it. Consequently, the Polish bookshops sell more and more foreign books and supply foreign libraries, universities and other institutions with the Polish and Slavonic books as well as the literature on Eastern Europe. All the same, the bookshops do everything to draw their customers from Polonia. They also supply the other East European minorities and individual foreign readers interested in Poland and her culture. Simultaneously, the Polish bookshops run the mail-order business sending books to the Poles scattered all over the world. Most of the bookshops have secondhand book departments, and some of them have their own libraries and reading rooms. Thus, they continue to be the centres of the Polish culture and propaganda. They are "the centres of literary appointments" - as the founder of the first Polish bookshop abroad, Eustachy Januszkiewicz,.wanted them to be 150 years ago. Here are some of the oldest and most meritorious Polish bookshops of today: The Polish bookshop in Paris /founded in 1925/» Libella of Kazimierz Romanowicz in Paris /founded in 1946/, Orbis Books London Ltd. of Jerzy Kulczycki /founded in 1944/, Veritas in London /founded in 1947/ and the Polish Books Pair in Solura /Switzerland, founded in 1950/ run by Halszka Poniatowska Vincenz. Besides, a few younger bookshops should be mentioned here: "Polonia" in Chicago founded by Edward Puacz, the "Nowy Dziennik" bookshop in New York, the "American Częstochowa" bookshop in Doylestown /Pennsylvania/ and the "Związkowiec" bookshop in Toronto. There are no Polish bookshops in the Socialist countries though they used to exist in Czechoslovakia. All these countries sell the books imported from Poland in the foreign departments of some specialistic bookstores.

    The purpose of the study is to show relations connecting the Gebethner & Wolff editing bookshop with Łódź at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The company, established in 1857 in Warsaw opened in Łódź, in 1890, the warehouse of grand pianos, pianos and harmoniums, as well as a storehouse of music scores. In further years agencies selling periodicals - “Kurier Codzienny” (1893) and “Tygodnik Ilustrowany” (1896) published by Gebethner & Wolff also commenced their activities. Both, the shop and the agencies played signicfiant role in integration of music and journalistic environment in Łódź. In 1898 a bookshop was opened, however it was sold to Rychliński & Wegner company in 1901. The next Gebethner & Wolff bookshop, established in 1912, conducted its activity until the beginning of the 2nd World War. It offered mainly literature its own publishing house, as well as quality foreign-language publications. During the 1st World War the bookshop organised special exhibitions, the purpose of which was to promote Polish educational books. Gebethner & Wolff company has also undertaken activities contributing to popularisation of Łódź. It was the special number of “Tygodnik Ilustrowany” devoted to Łódź (1911 no. 19), as well as the information diary for 1914 named “Rocznik Lodzki Gebethnera & Wolffa” [Lodz Yearbook of the Gebethner & Wolff]. However, it was W. Reymont's “Ziemia Obiecana” [The Promised Land], which had the greatest impact on shaping the image of the city by the Lodka River. The initiative of appearance and publishing of the book was the effect of activity of the Gebethner & Wolff. Accomplishment of the above mentioned objectives, as well as other activities became possible thanks to involvement of numerous people connected with Łódź. They were, among others, booksellers: Robert Schwartzchultz, Juliusz Goźlinski, Stanislaw Miszewski, journalists: Wladyslaw Rowinski and Zenon Pietkiewicz, as well as the son of the company's co-owner Gustaw Wojciech Gebethner.

    The publishing market is in the world of new media space as many opportunities as the threats for the popularization of the book. Not all of them are obvious, and their consequences are simple to foresee. Like the book itself, which with the change, or rather the differentiation of its character, can be understood as: object, product, good, medium, content, text, relation, service. This article discusses the contemporary book market in Poland in the light of global changes in publishing production and distribution. The key to understanding them is to consider the role of the book and its way of life. Answer the question of what is gaining and losing the book through the new digital media, and with it the author and the reader in the changing roles of the forming and learning entities.
    Rynek wydawniczy w epoce nowych mediów to przestrzeń równie wielu szans co zagrożeń dla popularyzacji książki. Nie wszystkie są oczywiste, a ich konsekwencje proste do przewidzenia. Podobnie jak sama książka, która wraz ze zmianą, czy raczej zróżnicowaniem swojej postaci, może być rozumiana jako: przedmiot, produkt, dobro, obiekt, medium, treść, tekst, relacja, usługa. Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje współczesny rynek książki w Polsce w świetle globalnych zmian w zakresie produkcji i dystrybucji wydawniczej. Kluczowe dla ich zrozumienia jest rozważenie roli książki i sposobu jej istnienia. W tekście podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytania, co zyskuje, a co traci książka za sprawą nowych, cyfrowych mediów, a wraz z nią autor i czytelnik w zmiennych rolach podmiotów tworzących i poznających.

    Artykuł Polska literatura w Izraelu. Rekonesans opiera się na materiałach archiwalnych zebranych podczas kwerend do książki Literatura polska w Izraelu. Leksykon (Karolina Famulska-Ciesielska, Sławomir Jacek Żurek, Kraków–Budapeszt 2012) i jest próbą syntetycznego przedstawienia dziejów tej literatury. W oglądzie został uwzględniony dorobek pisarzy polsko-żydowskich przybywających do Palestyny przed wybuchem drugiej wojny światowej (1939 – emigracja polskich syjonistów), podczas jej trwania (1939–1945 – uchodźcy i żołnierze przybyli wraz z armią generała Władysława Andersa), a także po jej zakończeniu (1945–1948 – Żydzi ocalali z Zagłady). Została omówiona działalność literacka i kulturalna polskich Żydów w Izraelu przybywających tam w trzech falach (1948–1953, 1957–1959 oraz 1968–1970) z podkreśleniem roli polskojęzycznych czasopism, których redakcje przez kilka dziesięcioleci animowały polskie życie kulturalne i literackie w tym kraju („Kronika Tygodniowa”, „Kronika Izraelska”, „Kronika”, „Przekrój”, „Kurier Powszechny”, „Iskry”, „Echo Tygodnia”, „Przekrój Izraelski”, „Po Prostu w Izraelu”, „Od Nowa”, a szczególnie „Nowiny–Kurier”), a także bibliotek, księgarni oraz antykwariatów („Hasefer”, „Gloria” „Księgarnia Polska” – Edmunda i Ady Neusteinów) jako instytucji bardzo ważnych dla promowania literatury i kultury polskiej. Spośród wszystkich publikujących po polsku (było ich ponad stu) uwzględniono przede wszystkich nazwiska tych najbardziej zasłużonych, takich jak: Irit Amiel, Eli Barbur, Ruth Baum, Anna Ćwiakowska, Henryk Dankowicz, Ida Fink, Anna Garncarska-Kadary, Ignacy Iserleas, Filip Istner, Renata Jabłońska, Aleksander Klugman, Kalman Segal, Arnold Słucki, Viol Wein, Stanisław Wygodzki.
    The article Polish literature in Israel. A reconnaissance is based on archival materials collected during the preliminary research for the book Polish literature in Israel. A lexicon (Karolina Famulska-Ciesielska, Sławomir Jacek Zurek, Kraków-Budapeszt 2012) and is an attempt at a synthetic presentation of the history of this literature. The view of it takes into consideration the works of Polish-Jewish writers coming to Palestine before the outbreak of World War II (1939 – emigration of Polish Zionists), during it (1939-1945 – refugees and soldiers who came there with General Władysław Anders’s army), and also after the end of it (1945-1948 – Jews who survived the Holocaust). The article discusses the literary and cultural work of Polish Jews in Israel who came there in three waves (1948-1953, 1957-1959, and 1968-1970) with the emphasis on the role of Polish language periodicals whose editorial staff for several dozen years animated Polish cultural and literary life in that country (Kronika Tygodniowa, Kronika Izraelska, Kronika, Przekrój, Kurier Powszechny, Iskry, Echo Tygodnia, Przekrój Izraelski, Po Prostu w Izraelu, Od Nowa, and especially Nowiny-Kurier), and also on libraries, bookshops and second-hand bookshops (“Hasefer”, “Gloria”, “Księgarnia Polska” – run by Edmund and Ada Neusteins) as institutions that were significant for promoting Polish literature and culture. Among all the authors who published their works in Polish (there were more than a hundred of them) first of all the names of the most distinguished ones are taken into consideration: Irit Amiel, Eli Barbur, Ruth Baum, Anna Ćwiakowska, Henryk Dankowicz, Ida Fink, Anna Garncarska-Kadary, Ignacy Iserleas, Filip Istner, Renata Jabłońska, Aleksander Klugman, Kalman Segal, Arnold Słucki, Viola Wein, Stanisław Wygodzki.

W artykule zaprezentowano osobliwości alpejskiego miasta Innsbruck oraz przebieg stażu zagranicznego pracownika Biblioteki Politechniki Lubelskiej w Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol in Innsbruck. Omówiono katalogi i bazy danych.
    The European Union is supporting raising competence and the international cooperation of universities by funding partially foreign internships of the teaching staff and students. The EU programme has been functioning from 1987 and from 2007 it also embraces librarians. The article presents the curiosities of the Alpine city of Innsbruck and the course of a foreign internship of an employee of the Lublin Technical University Library in the University and Domestic Library Tyrol in Innsbruck (Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Tirol in Innsbruck). Catalogues and databases are also discussed.
