Opis:
In 2013 an unknown volume from the collection of books of bishop Erazm Ciołek, an eminent renaissance bibliophile, was discovered in the Raczyński Library in Poznań. The binding of the book features several impressions of a heraldic super ex libris, whereas the lining pasted on the inside of the covers is scrap printing paper from the Jan Haller printing house. In view of an enormous historical value of the volume and scarce knowledge of Ciołek's bibliophilic profile, the binding was set against the other presently known bindings from the bishops' book collection. As a result it was established that he availed himself of the services of the Krakow book binders Piotr Wald and Henryk Sussmund; moreover, he also used at least four kinds of super ex libris, out of which two have a characteristic Italinizing form of the testa di cavallo type. A typographic analysis of the scrap paper revealed that it is probably a fragment of a 'prognostic' that did not survive in any other copy.

Opis:
The collections of the Kórnik Library include a copy of a printed Mszał gnieźnieński [Gniezno Missal] of 1555, protected by a binding with characteristic architectural decoration. Detailed analysis shows that the binding was made between 1558 and 1566 in a workshop of an anonymous bookbinder from Poznań, thus confirming the presence of the Italian thread in the Poznań bookbinding ornamentation of the Renaissance period. At the same time, it is the latest known example of Polish renaissance architectural binding. It also provides evidence that although this characteristic composition formula appeared in the repertoire of the Poznań bookbinders about twenty years later than in Kraków, it lasted longer. Worthy of attention is also the volume’s provenance related to Stanisław Warszewicki – his being “the most influential figure of the [Jesuit] Order after Skarga” in Poland. He is commemorated by a supralibros with Kuszaba coat-of-arms and the sigles “S V C P” pressed into the centre of the bottom part of the binding.

Opis:
Julian Talko-Hryncewicz (1850–1936) was a Polish physician, anthropologist and ethnographer. At the beginning of the 1890s, he took the position of a district physician in Troitskosavsk in the Transbaikal region. During his stay there, in addition to his medical practice, Talko-Hryncewicz conducted anthropological research and excavations in Siberia. At that time, along with some educated inhabitants of Kyakhta, he founded the local Department of the Imperial Geographical Society. This article discusses a gift donated to him by members of the Troitskosavsko-Kyakhtinsky Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in Saint Petersburg in recognition of his work for the local community. The gift consisted of a diploma (so-called “address”) in a decorative binding and a luxurious document folder inserted into an imposing case. It was handed to Talko-Hryncewicz on April 29, 1908. The reason for the gift was his departure for Kraków where he was to take the chair of anthropology at the Jagiellonian University. In 1932 the new owner then donated the gift be added to the collection of the National Museum in Kraków. It is currently stored in the Department of Decorative Art and Material Culture.
