- The subject matter of this communique are studies made by the authors with the aim to find out a safe method of delaminating repainted pictures and, in particulat, of removing oil paint coats from distemper paintings and their transfer on new bases. After carrying out thorough test trials a real operation o f delamination was made on the oil painting of ,,St Bartholomew” dating most probably from the turn o f the 17th and 18th centuries. The works undertaken on this object included chemical and physical examinations, a test confirming the usefulness o f the chosen method o f stratification, a delamination o f two paint layers on the whole o f the picture’s surface, the transfer of the removed layer on a new base, and finally operations of esthetic conservations on the half o f the surface of the ,,St Bartholomew” painting as well as the removal o f dirt and part o f varnish from the half of the surface o f the distemper ,,St Thomas” painting uncovered from under repainting. The communique describes in detail the employed method of delamination and lists features of the object treated, conditioning the success for a delamination procedure.
