    The article examines the validity of the view which challenges Pliny the Elder’s information concerning the existence of the colony of Flaviopolis on the Thracian Chersonesus, arguing that its name was unusual for a colony. The author discusses situations in which the title of the colony could have been combined with local place names ending in -polis. Furthermore, attention is drawn to the peculiar character of Natural History as a source for toponomastic research and the fact that the latter work also mentions the colony of Flaviobrica, whose name seems interesting given the doubts surrounding the legal status of the Thracian Flaviopolis.

    Przedmiotem artykułu recenzyjnego jest praca zbiorowa The Alternative Augustan Age. Jej autorzy intencjonalnie nie koncentrują narracji na samym Auguście, zwracając uwagę m.in. na republikańską metrykę części inicjatyw cesarza. Te, w których zdawał się on podążać śladami wytyczonymi przez Sullę, Pompejusza i Katona Utyceńskiego, omówili K. Morrell i P. Hay. Choć nie wszystkie przywołane przez badaczy analogie znajdują równie solidne oparcie w źródłach, en masse rzucają interesujące światło na kwestię stosunku Augusta do tradycji republiki.
    This article presents the basic assumptions and theses of the collection of essays The Alternative Augustan Age (ed. K. Morrell, J. Osgood, K. Welch, New York 2019). This book is a post-conference publication; the conference papers, according to the intention of the organisers, are concerning the so-called the Age of Augustus and not the princeps directly. Moving away from the narrative focus on Augustus’s actions in literary sources is the most characteristic feature of the book. When discussing its content, Paul Hay’s and Kit Morrell’s articles have been discussed most copiously. These scholars draw attention to the analogies between some of Augustus’s initiatives and the ideas and reforms with which the three politicians associated with the faction of the optimates, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Gnaeus Pompeius the Great and Marcus Porcius Cato came up towards the end of the republic. According to the author of this article, not all the similarities identified by those researchers find equally robust support in the sources. Nevertheless, their research sheds new light on the problem of Augustus’s relationship to the traditions of the republic.

    Wspomnienie o Henryku Jurkowskim (1927–2016), historyku, teoretyku i krytyku teatru lalek. Jurkowski był także pedagogiem, dramaturgiem i redaktorem. Przez wiele lat reprezentował Polskę w UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette) i był członkiem jej władz (m.in. członkiem Prezydium, później Komitetu Wykonawczego, 1959–1992; sekretarzem generalnym, 1972–1980; wiceprzewodniczącym, 1980–1984; przewodniczącym, 1984–1992). Był także prezesem POLUNIMA (2007–2011). Opublikował setki artykułów, esejów, recenzji i kilkadziesiąt książek w kilkunastu językach na temat historii i teorii teatru lalek oraz estetyki lalkarskiej. W Polsce wznawiano jego trzytomowe Dzieje teatru lalek (PIW: Warszawa, 1970, 1976, 1984; wydanie II poprawione w dwóch tomach - Lublin, 2012). Za granicą ukazały się m.in.: Aspects of Puppet Theatre. A collection of essays (Puppet Centre Trust: London, 1988), Ecrivains et marionnettes. Quatre siècles de la literature dramatique en Europe (Editions Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 1991), dwutomowa History of European Puppetry (The Edwin Mellen Press: Lewiston, NY, 1996 & 1998) oraz Metamorphoses. La marionette au XXe siècle (Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 2000).
    Memory of Henryk Zdzisław Jurkowski (1927–2016), a puppet theatre historian, theorist and critic, pedagogue, dramatist, editor, and long-time Polish representative in UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), officer of the Union’s governing bodies (i.e. member of the Presidium, later renamed as Executive Committee, 1959–1992; Secretary General, 1972–1980; Vice-President, 1980–1984; President, 1984–1992), the President of POLUNIMA (2007–2011). He authored hundreds of articles, essays, reviews and dozens of books published in more than dozen languages regarding the history and theory of puppet theatre and puppetry esthetic, including his three-volume Dzieje teatru lalek (‘A History of Puppet Theatre,’ PIW: Warszawa, 1970, 1976, 1984; revised 2nd edition in two volumes—Lublin, 2012), Aspects of Puppet Theatre. A collection of essays (Puppet Centre Trust: London, 1988), Ecrivains et marionnettes. Quatre siècles de la literature dramatique en Europe (Editions Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 1991), the two-volume History of European Puppetry (The Edwin Mellen Press: Lewiston, NY, 1996 & 1998) and Metamorphoses.
