W dniu 14 stycznia 2016 roku w holu Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej otwarto wystawę Jan Hus – 600 lat później, zorganizowaną przez Czeskie Centrum w Warszawie oraz Bibliotekę Jagiellońską. Otwarciu towarzyszył polsko-czeski panel dyskusyjny. Wzięli w nim udział ze strony czeskiej dr Petr Janyška i mgr Jakub Smrčka, a ze strony polskiej dr Paweł Nowakowski oraz dr Tomasz Graff. Ilustracje stanowiące ekspozycję wraz z tekstami w wersji polskiej i angielskiej umieszczono na 18 tablicach, ukazujących życie i działalność Jana Husa, jego edukację, aktywność uniwersytecką, pisarską, kaznodziejską i śmierć na stosie w roku 1415.
The exhibition entitled Jan Hus 600 years later – organized by the Czech Center in Warsaw – was opened at the Jagiellonian Library on 14th January 2016. It was followed by a discussion panel, the Czech part of which was represented by Petr Janyška Ph.D. and Jakub Smrčka M.A., while the Polish part was represented by Paweł Nowakowski Ph.D. and Tomasz Graff Ph.D. The exhibition consisted of illustrations with explanatory notes in Polish and Czech placed on 18 boards showing the life and work of Jan Hus, i.e. his studies, his academic and literary career, his preaching and his death at the stake in 1415.

W artykule rozwinięto tezę prof. Stefana Swieżawskiego, że Jan Hus, czeski reformator uznany za heretyka przez Sobór w Konstancji i w wyniku tego spalony na stosie, może być uznany za prekursora II Soboru Watykańskiego. Po krótkim wstępie historycznym następuje analiza tych poglądów Husa, które znalazły odzwierciedlenie w dokumentach Vaticanum II: Dei verbum, Lumen gentium i Dignitatis humanae. Wywody uzupełnia zwięzły opis współczesnego katolickiego podejścia do Husa, a także wskazanie, że nowe odczytanie jego postaci jest możliwe dzięki wielkiej metanoi, zapoczątkowanej w Kościele katolickim przez Vaticanum II.
The article develops the thesis of Professor Stefan Swieżawski that Jan Hus, the Czech Reformer sentenced as a heretic by the Council of Constance and in consequence burnt at the stake, can be considered as a precursor of the Second Vatican Council. After a short historical introduction there is an analysis of those ideas of Hus that were reflected in the Vatican II documents Dei verbum, Lumen gentium and Dignitatis humanae. The arguments are completed by a description of the present Catholic approach to Hus and by indicating a possible re-interpretation of his person thanks to the great metanoia launched in the Catholic Church by Vatican II.

The problem being discussed in the article has been developed from two points. The first point contains the description of the historical background of Hus’s life and activity: biographical data, aptitude of Hus to the schism in the Church, to the political and social situation in Bohemia as well as the Council of Constance. In the second point the main reformist postulates over Hus’s theology which is presented as: the understanding of the authority of sources of faith – especially the authority of the Scripture, teachings about the Church and predestination, finally teachings about papacy.
Problem artykułu został rozwinięty w dwóch punktach. W punkcie pierwszym ukazano tło historyczne życia i działalności Jana Husa: dane biograficzne, stosunek Husa do schizmy w Kościele, do sytuacji politycznej i społecznej w Czechach oraz sobór w Konstancji. W punkcie drugim przedstawiono główne reformatorskie postulaty teologii Jana Husa: rozumienie autorytetu źródeł wiary – zwłaszcza autorytetu Pisma Świętego, naukę o Kościele i predestynacji oraz nauczanie o papiestwie.

Artykuł prezentuje postać Jana Husa, czeskiego reformatora spalonego na Soborze w Konstancji w 1415 r., która ostatnio budzi zainteresowanie w związku z 600. rocznicą jego męczeńskiej śmierci, jak i w kontekście 500. rocznicy wybuchu reformacji. W poglądach i postulatach Jana Husa wielu historyków chrześcijaństwa i teologii dostrzega zapowiedź reformacji zainicjowanej przez Marcina Lutra w 1517 r. W trzech punktach najpierw ukazano kontekst, który Lutrowi pozwolił stwierdzić „my wszyscy jesteśmy husytami” (1), następnie pokazano obraz Jana Husa w wybranych pismach poreformacyjnych, których autorami byli Matthias Flacius Illyricus, Ludwig Rabus i John Fox (2). Artykuł kończy kilka końcowych ocen i wniosków (3).
The article presents Jan Hus, Czech reformer burnt at a stake during the Council of Constance in 1415. 600th anniversary of his death as a martyr and the context of the 500th anniversary of Reformation causes interest of this distinctive figure. In the views and postulates of Jan Hus many historians of Christianity as well as theologians are likely to see the prediction of Reformation initiated by Martin Luther in 1517. In three points first there was shown the context, which enabled Luther to state “We are the Hussites – all of us” (1), then there was shown the image of Jan Hus as depicted in various post-reformation writs (2), of such authors as Matthias Flacius Illyricus, Ludwig Rabus and John Fox. The article sums up some final evaluations and conclusions.

W artykule przedstawione zostały myśl oraz działalność średniowiecznego reformatora czeskiego, mistrza Jana Husa, na tle historycznego i doktrynalnego kontekstu życia kościelnego. W szczególny sposób wyakcentowano idee, które Hus przedstawił w swoim sztandarowym dziele teologicznym De Ecclesia, jak również oskarżenia stawiane mu na Soborze w Konstancji. Dzisiaj możemy postawić tezę, że tragiczna historia mistrza Jana Husa oraz jego doktryna eklezjologiczna stoją pomiędzy Kościołami poreformacyjnymi i Kościołem rzymskokatolickim, tworząc wspólne dziedzictwo. Myśl eklezjologiczna Jana Husa, ukazana w kontekście ówczesnych postaw teologiczno-doktrynalnych oraz przez pryzmat krytyki nadużyć w życiu chrześcijańskim, uzasadnia potrzebę reformy Kościoła, szukania przyczyn rozłamów, a także konieczności naprawy życia moralnego kleru i wierzących. W artykule postawiono również pytanie: czy w ocenie myśli i działań mistrza Jana Husa chodzi o obronę jego przynależności konfesyjnej, czy też o poszukiwanie prawdy?
The article presents the thinking and activity of the medieval Czech reformer, master Jan Hus, against the background of the historical and doctrinal context of ecclesiastical life. The ideas exposed by Hus in his theological work De Ecclesia, as well as the accusations against him at the Council of Constance, have been pointed up in a special way. Today, we can make an argument that the tragic history of master Jan Hus and his ecclesiological doctrine stand between the reformate Churches and the Roman Catholic Church, forming a common heritage. The ecclesiological thinking of Jan Hus, shown in the context of contemporary theological and doctrinal attitudes as well as in the perspective of criticizing abuse in Christian life, justifies the need to reform the Church, to search for the causes of divisions, and the need to renew the moral conduct of clergy and common believers. The article also poses a question: is the assessment of reasoning and activity of Jan Hus pointing to the defense of his confessional affiliation, or about seeking the truth?

The article „Pre-Reformation theology of Jan Hus” presents, in its first part, life and work of Jan Hus, showing engagement of the Czech theologian in the Czech reformation-national movement of the 16th century. The second part focuses on presenting the content of Jan Hus’s most important theological work – the treaty De ecclesia – pointing, among others, to the use by him of the notion of church as a communion of the chosen and criticism of reducing the concept of church to its institutional form. The third part shows, how Jan Hus’s person and work were received by the Wittenberg Reformation, and especially by Martin Luther who, in his attitude towards the Czech reformer, underwent certain evolution from initial aversion to accepting the reformation movement as a continuation of the work started in Prague.

Postać Jana Husa w historii średniowiecznych Czech ma wymiar absolutnie wyjątkowy, a jego życie i dzieło wykracza daleko poza czeski kontekst. Tematyka husycka urosła do rangi odrębnej specjalności w międzynarodowej mediewistyce. Jan Hus doczekał się dotychczas kilku biografii, a najnowsza praca P. Soukupa, nie będzie zapewne ostatnią. Spośród dotychczasowych wyróżnia ją szczególne podkreślenie roli ambony i kaznodziejskiej aktywności Husa, co odzwierciedla także tytuł książki. Dla Husa ambona stała się bowiem podstawowym narzędziem promocji idei reformatorskich. Podstawowym zatem zagadnieniem staje się pytanie o podłoże wyboru kazalnicy, które zdeterminowało życie czeskiego reformatora. Punktem zwrotnym stała się aktywność Husa na ambonie Kaplicy Betlejemskiej. P. Soukup podkreśla przede wszystkim praktycyzm ambony, jedynego mass medium zdolnego do propagacji treści ideowych, i słusznie Kaplicę Betlejemską nazywa „a unique center of reform”. Dodajmy jednak do wywodów autora, że Hus wybrał ambonę nie tylko z powodów praktycznych, lecz w równym stopniu ideowych. Wybór ambony przez Husa, to przekonanie o skuteczności kazań, o sile słów i performacyjnej funkcji mowy. Hus w swych kazaniach przywoływał przewodnią metaforę kazania, jaką znamy z dokumentu fundacji Kaplicy Betlejemskiej, a mianowicie słowa Bożego jako nasienia (semen, semeno, sieme). W przeciwieństwie do mszy tylko godne kazanie sprawia, że dusze niektórych jednoczą się w miłości z Chrystusem, pisał w jednym z kazań. Przyjęte ramy biografii nie sprzyjały szczegółowym uwagom. Śledzenie drogi życiowej Husa przez pryzmat aktywności kaznodziejskiej pozostaje jednak godną podkreślenia zasługą autora.
In the history of medieval Bohemia, the figure of Jan Hus has its own unique dimension, and his life and work reach far beyond the Czech context. The Hussite theme has grown into a separate specialization in international medieval studies. Jan Hus has had several biographies so far, and the latest work by Pavel Soukup will probably not be the last. What distinguishes the book from its predecessors is the particular emphasis on the role of the pulpit and Hus's preaching activity, which is also reflected in its title. For Hus, the pulpit became the basic tool for promoting the ideas of the Reformation. The main issue, therefore, is the question of the grounds for his choice of the pulpit, which determined the life of the Czech reformer. The turning point was Hus’s activity in the pulpit of the Bethlehem Chapel. P. Soukup emphasizes the practicality of the pulpit, the only mass medium capable of propagating ideological content, and he rightly calls the Bethlehem Chapel “a unique center of reform”. Let us add, however, to the author’s arguments that Hus chose the pulpit not only for practical but equally ideological reasons. The choice of the pulpit by Hus is a belief in the effectiveness of sermons, the power of words, and the performative function of speech. In his sermons, Hus quoted the main metaphor from the sermon that we know from the foundation document of the Bethlehem Chapel, namely the word of God compared to a seed (semen, semeno, sieme). According to one of his sermons, unlike the Mass, only a worthy sermon makes the souls of some unite in love with Christ. The adopted framework of the biography did not encourage detailed comments. It is, however, to the author’s merit that he traces the life of Hus through the prism of preaching activity.
