This article is devoted to a comprehensive discussion of Jews’ conversion to Protestantism in the Ottoman Empire in the cities of Istanbul and Izmir, during the decade before the Hatt-i-Șerif of Gülhane, the first Tanzimat decree in 1839, until the Hatti hümayun decree of 18 February 1856. It also considers the attitudes of the Ottoman authorities and the Jewish communities toward this phenomenon, as well as the extent to which three missionary societies, the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews, the American Board of the Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), and the Free church of Scotland mission, succeeded in prevailing upon Jews to give up their faith. The missionaries worked with the millenarian anticipations and looked forward to intensive activity which would result in the conversion of the Jewish masses. To achieve their objectives they relied on evangelical, educational and philanthropic activities, and on medical missions. The article discusses the motives and the social and economic status of converts to Christianity and those given Christian religious instruction, and describes the communities’ steps taken against Jewish conversion to Christianity in the 1820-50s. The article concludes that all three missionary societies that operated in the Ottoman Empire acknowledged the fact of their failure to achieve the goal of converting the Jewish masses, and took solace in those dozens who were converted through their efforts.

The desire to raise a family with as many children as possible was a major aspiration of Jewish families in the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Many halakhic responses and other sources address this subject and its impact on Jewish families and society. This paper reviews how Sephardic Jewish society in the Ottoman cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Salonica (Thessaloniki) grappled with the reality of barren men and women – which was quite common – from 1500-1850, and how Jewish courts resolved cases that involved men’s requests to marry a second wife in order to fulfill the commandment of procreation. It discusses how the desire to procreate was realized through the institution of marriage, the undesirability of single life, the age at marriage, yibum (levirate marriage), women’s desire for children, the impact of kabbalah on fulfillment of the commandments, contraception, fertility treatments, the effect of child mortality on parents, and how the longing for children affected the private life of prominent individuals.

Opis:
The Metropolitan Municipality of Izmir (Turkey) designated a steeply inclined area for the construction of buildings to house the participants of the Izmir University Olympic Games. Before the construction activities could start, engineering geological and geotechnical investigations had to be carried out in order to establish which zones in the area were suitable for safe constructions. Seismic studies, borings and laboratory tests yielded the data, which were used for preparing five hazard maps in a GIS environment. The construction activities based on the results of this complex investigation appeared successful. The engineering geological investigations included geotechnical measurements on core samples obtained from the boreholes (core drilling) and laboratory testing. The rock-quality designation (RQD%) values of the rock units were determined and used in the rock-mass classification (rock-mass rating method) as an in-put parameter and in the calculation of the bearing capacity of the various rock units. Geophysical surveys were carried out to determine the seismic velocity of the rocks at the site. A short overview is provided of the main problems that had to be dealt with, and of the successive steps taken to solve the engineering-geological problems. Determination of these problems is necessary for adequate land-use planning and construction activities.

Wherever industrial development exists, environmental pollution increases day by day. The heavy metals play an important role in soil and environmental pollutions and directly affect the human being lives. In this study, we determine pollutions resulting from heavy metal particles emanating from the brake discs pads of the vehicles on high ways and nearby factories. The field work was carried out in İzmir-Aliağa industrial area. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were done at a long profile crossing the İzmir-Çanakkale highway that goes through the study area. Here, we have determined the effect of heavy metals causing pollution in the surroundings. The studies indicate that the average acceptable values of magnetic susceptibility in such areas is about 0-50×10¯⁵ SI. Here we show that the magnetic susceptibility measurement values obtained along our study profile are about 18 times the acceptable ranges.

Lightweight aggregates, used to produce cavity blocks in the construction sector, vary according to their technical properties and thus, technical analyses should be performed on lightweight aggregate specimens. Lightweight aggregates, like pumice, are widely employed for the production of construction elements, used as light masonry units. In literature there are studies related to applications of various lightweight aggregates, such as volcanic slag, ignimbrite and expanded clay, in addition to pumice, to produce porous cavity blocks. This study investigates the usability of perlitic pumice formations, present around Menderes, İzmir (Turkey), as lightweight aggregate. Many experiments were conducted to investigate this possibility and to determine the optimum mixing ratios of aggregate. Based on the results, for 10% of cement by volume, the optimum aggregate mixing ratio was 40% 0-4 mm and 60% 4-8 mm.

International Izmir Festival
Opis:
Nowadays art festivals engage more to organize their events in unusual places. Either for the sake of city branding or a pure cultural memory action, a performance might be set in a forgotten memory place. The place which is distinguished sharply by a comfortable concert hall becomes one of the actors of the event and the participant questions a past that s/he hasn’t been strongly connected. Thus, the individual is not only aroused by the performance itself and the information in the booklets but also physical environment has an affect. This article aims to tackle the contribution of color as an instrument of data collection in qualitative research. By using color tablets inspired by the colorist Kobayashi the colors are tested firstly as a visual to learn how they make sense in Izmir during International Izmir Festival. Secondly, they are questioned how the participants embed colors’ senses to the memory places where they attended to the concerts. The research process indicates that the experience of a concert might not be visually powerful enough to associate memory places with the colors. However, the technique of color tablets becomes prompting object which support the dialogue construction between the fieldworker and informant. Thus, as an instrument for evocation and conversation color tablets become interactive objects for remembering of the festival experience and it mediates the social roles of the informants and the fieldworker.

Opis:
Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass-type rock which is collected in open mines in various parts of the world. In this study, eight different perlite samples, supplied from the mines located in the Bergama, Izmir region, were used. The perlite samples were structurally, morphologically, and mineralogically characterized via a wide range of analytical techniques such as Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) Surface Area Analysis, Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and a liquid pycnometer. Platelet shaped-like structures were observed in the SEM analysis of the expanded perlites in contrast to the images of spongy or cracked expanded perlites reported in literature. The O-H bending and Si-O-Si vibrations (both asymmetric and symmetric stretching) of perlite structures were confirmed by FTIR. Highly amorphous phases with a rather low percentage of crystalline phases were observed by XRD. In the BET surface area analysis, expanded perlite materials exhibited higher surface area compared to unexpanded ones. A detailed characterization of perlite structures is essential as there is a significant potential to use these minerals in various biocomposite applications and it is useful to explain structure-property relationships in this class of materials.

Opis:
This article focuses on Armand Lévy, Adam Mickiewicz’s secretary, as the missing link between Romantic Polish nationalism and proto-Zionism. It examines Lévy’s interpretation of Adam Mickiewicz’s use of Jewish motifs and how Lévy’s interpretation provided his friend and neighbour in Paris, Moses Hess, a German-Jewish socialist, colleague and rival of Karl Marx, with a repertoire he had lacked to structure his proto-Zionist ideas. The article discusses how ideas from one cultural sphere were transferred to others. Mickiewicz, seeking to find ways to strengthen the Polish nation-building process following the partition of his motherland, used his interpretation of the contemporary Jewish Diaspora as a model. His secretary, the Frenchman Armand Lévy, reinterpreted Mickiewicz’s interpretation. His convoluted life course eventually led him to think about the Jews in nationalist terms via the discursive tools he acquired from Mickiewicz. Going beyond the latter’s views, Lévy regarded the Jews as a diasporic nation aspiring to gain political statehood. He championed Jewish messianism as a concrete step towards the Jews’ sovereignty. This, in turn, provided Moses Hess with a repertoire he had lacked until this point: namely, an acquaintance with Jews who were committed to renewing the sovereign Jewish life as of old. The article shows how Armand Lévy – a person acting in a sociological ‘contact zone’, i.e. in a social space where cultures meet, clash, and grapple – was able to cross the boundaries of Frenchness, Polishness, Jewishness, cosmopolitanism and nationalism, transferring motifs between Jewish and non-Jewish émigrés in complex ways which provoked unexpected results.
