The paper presents an influence of the navigational model change on the structural and qualitative changes of the ships groundings in international shipping. Data was analyzed based on reports of 75 seagoing vessels in international shipping in the 2000–2014. This study is an attempt to assess the causes of ships groundings in the new integrated navigation model.
W artykule przedstawiono wpływ zmiany modelu nawigacyjnego na zmiany strukturalne i jakościowe powstawania awarii wejścia statków na mielizny w żegludze międzynarodowej. Opracowano dane na podstawie raportów wejść na mieliznę 75 statków morskich w żegludze międzynarodowej w latach 2000–2014. Niniejsza praca stanowi próbę oceny przyczyn powstawania awarii wejścia statku na mieliznę w nowym modelu zintegrowanej nawigacji morskiej.

e-Navigation, a theme introduced but IMO to improve safety of navigation at sea, is starting to gain traction in various organizations. As the concept develops, the importance of data, both static as well as dynamic, is more and more realized. IALA and IHO, in their efforts to help making e-Navigation a reality, have agreed to propose the IHO GI Register (often known as S-100 Register) as the conceptual basis for the Common Maritime Data Structure (CMDS). Utilizing this common understanding of key players in e-Navigation arena, the IMO e-Navigation Correspondence Group has firmed up the overarching architecture, enabling a series to test beds proving the concept of integration of various data streams to enable improved communication between the stakeholders on shore or at sea. The integration of pre-composed, expert generated navigational data with real time and semi real-time data like Virtual AtoNs, Tide Gages Data or MSI transmission from VTS into a single e-Navigation display, if correctly developed, implemented and executed, will be the enabler of increased situational awareness.

The demand for smartphone positioning has grown rapidly due to increased positioning accuracy applications, such as land vehicle navigation systems used for vehicle tracking, emergency assistance, and intelligent transportation systems. The integration between navigation systems is necessary to maintain a reliable solution. High-end inertial sensors are not preferred due to their high cost. Smartphone microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are attractive due to their small size and low cost; however, they suffer from long-term drift, which highlights the need for additional aiding solutions using road network that can perform efficiently for longer periods. In this research, the performance of the Xiaomi MI 8 smartphone's single-frequency precise point positioning was tested in kinematic mode using the between-satellite single-difference (BSSD) technique. A Kalman filter algorithm was used to integrate BSSD and inertial navigation system (INS)-based smartphone MEMS. Map matching technique was proposed to assist navigation systems in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied environments, based on the integration of BSSD-INS and road network models applying hidden Marcov model and Viterbi algorithm. The results showed that BSSD-INS- map performed consistently better than BSSD solution and BSSD–INS integration, irrespective of whether simulated outages were added or not. The root mean square error (RMSE) values for 2D horizontal position accuracy when applying BSSD-INS-map integration improved by 29% and 22%, compared to BSSD and BSSD-INS navigation solutions, respectively, with no simulated outages added. The overall average improvement of proposed BSSD-INS-map integration was 91%, 96%, and 98% in 2D horizontal positioning accuracy, compared to BSSD-INS algorithm for six GNSS simulated signal outages with duration of 10, 20, and 30 s, respectively.

The tracking filter plays a key role in accurate estimation and prediction of maneuvering vessel’s position and velocity. Different methods are used for tracking. However, the most commonly used method is the Kalman filter and its modifications. The Alpha-Beta-Gamma filter is one of the special cases of the general solution pro-vided by the Kalman filter. It is a third order filter that computes the smoothed estimates of position, velocity and acceleration for the nth observation, and also predicts the next position and velocity. Although found to track a maneuvering target with a good accuracy than the constant velocity, Alpha-Beta filter, the Alpha-Beta-Gamma filter does not perform impressively under high maneuvers such as when the target is undergoing changing accelerations. This study, therefore, aims to track a highly maneuvering target experiencing jerky motions due to changing accelerations. The Alpha-Beta-Gamma filter is extended to include the fourth state that is, constant jerk to correct the sudden change of acceleration in order to improve the filter’s performance. Results obtained from simulations of the input model of the target dynamics under consideration indicate an improvement in performance of the jerky model, Alpha-Beta-Gamma-Eta, algorithm as compared to the constant acceleration model, Alpha-Beta-Gamma in terms of error reduction and stability of the filter during target maneuver.
