Opis:
The paper focuses on possibility and problematicity of modern interrogation about a human being. Problematicity emerges as a man is put in a situation called “after Auschwitz”, which is described with the categories of irreducibility (irreducibility of experience, means of self-determination). It is shown that the cultural form of representing such ultimate experience is testimony, which itself problematizes after Auschwitz. Precedents of such testimonies are described with examples of the works by Primo Levi and Varlam Shalamov. The author reveals the principal difference in the answers given by witnesses and the answers offered by interpreters such as contemporary philosophers. An attempt is made to substantiate that the modern experience of philosophizing about a human being – the modern anthropology – has to reject traditional efforts to determine a human being as “thing existent” or find some determinant essence. It is due to the situation “after Auschwitz” that questions all previous methods of human thinking. Moreover, a modern person increasingly chooses the so-called withdrawal scenario for a human being, rejection of actual social life in favour of imitating life and generating simulacrums, withdrawal to the virtual reality. The author takes a provocative example of Jean Baudrillard, who showed that the entire contemporary creative work of human beings is reduced to generating simulacrums – empty, meaningless signs. The latter becomes a popular trend obtaining a mass character. In response to this withdrawal trend the author proposes a different scenario: an anthropological alternative in the form of anthropological practices of self-determination and testimonies about such anthropological practices.

Under Hylemorphism, all composed beings are composed of form and matter. Accordingly, the human being is a unified substance of soul and body. Through the operations of a human being an immaterial power is manifested which demonstrates that the rational soul is immaterial and immortal. Through these elements of Thomistic metaphysics, a clear understanding of the person emerges as both in-itself and toward-others. After key metaphysical principles such as the principle of sufficient reason are defended, arguments against the thesis which claim the person is reducible to body or soul are rebuked and the Hylemorphic account is shown to stand. Leaning on the work of W. Norris Clarke, the person as body and soul is thus shown to be the frontier of being.

The paper points to an important sphere of human safety, as it refers to cyberspace as an environment where information is exchanged via the net and computer systems. In addition to positive accents, cyberspace also creates various threats that lead to the dehumanization of life. The negative effects of being in cyberspace cause threats to mental, social and healthy lives. Very often they pose a danger not only to human health but also to human life. In addition to the introduction, the article includes characteristics of the loss of a sense of reality among people who use cyberspace excessively and the risks of medical hazards.

The dispute over delayed animation, although it has its beginnings already in ancient philosophy and culture, started for good only in contemporary times when the right to kill unborn children (so-called abortion) entered the canon of constitutional law and, what is even stranger, started to be proposed for inclusion into basic human rights. Despite being discussed nowadays mainly in medical and legal sciences, the problem involves disputes of an ethical, religious and ideological nature. In these discussions one can notice a clear lack of anthropological and metaphysical argumentation that would address the question about the beginning of the human being (which entails the question about the beginning of being per se) in the light of common properties that belong to really existing beings, and the metaphysical laws that govern the manner in which things (including human embryos) exist. This article discusses understandings of the human being as they are found in Plato’s, Aristotle’s and Thomas Aquinas’s philosophical anthropology. It is this triad of approaches: Platonic, Aristotelian and Thomistic, that allows one both to notice the specificity of Aquinas’s approach and to resolve the dispute concerning delayed animation.

The statement that a human being is a soul and a body is not sufficient. The way their union comes about in the mutual creation of one human beingis what matters. Moreover, the spiritual substance of a human being hasa different structure than the material substance, yet there is some similarity, indeed something in common. The most difficult issue refers to theexistence of the spiritual element in the body, which unites it with the souland creates the human body out of it. The combination of body and soul, aswell as the human community, has its structure. Individual human beingsand communities are engrafted in the life of the Triune God. The substantialstructure of a human being constitutes the foundation of the social structureand coherent wholeness with the structure of life of the Divine Persons.

In his earliest letter, 1 Thessalonians, Paul addresses the issue of eschatology, leaving us a surprising anthropological description of the human being as “spirit, soul, and body.” Paul uses terms that are familiar to his readers. However, the first term in this threefold division of a human being, “spirit,” is the most emphasised, since the human being is no longer made up exclusively of “body and soul.” In this brief contribution, I will attempt to examine this term, “spirit,” as illuminated by its immediate narrative context and by other Pauline pneumatological texts and by its first reception. In this way, the reader will better understand the Pauline vision of the human being in the eschatology, in his ultimate destiny.

The title of the article could suggest the author’s assumption that a fi nancier is a human being, and the essence of the question pertains solely to whether he / she is a moral being or not. Actually, however, the text is also an attempt to answer a much more iconoclastic question: Can a model financier be considered a human being with the use of ideas and characteristics of philosophical anthropology? While taking trouble to answer both questions, the author comes to a conclusion that from a perspective of anthropological concepts it is quite difficult to regard a model homo pecuniosus as homo sapiens. Moreover, certain concepts of ethics question considering homo pecuniosus as moral human being. The main reasons of those doubts include essential features of a model homo pecuniosus, such as: uncontrollable inclination to counting, unlimited greed to possess, strong desire of power, a radical technocratic rationalism attitude, uttermost individualism, incapability of emotions, lack of sense of community feeling, moral indifferentism, and excessive inclination to risk.

Opis:
The author aims to develop Karol Wojtyła’s conception of ‘lived experience’ expounded in his book The Acting Person. The author holds that an experience that is ‘lived through’ engages the entire psychological structure of the person and is triggered by external circumstances. ‘Living through’ one’s experiences is a mark of the human being, it points to the ontological status of the human person, and to the fact that, in her actions, she necessarily refers to the sphere of values. It also enables the human person to comprehend the world, to comprehend herself as well as the other human beings, thus making their lives her own. The sphere of ‘lived experience’ also provides the ‘space’ for the manifestations of conscience. As a theoretical insight, the category of ‘lived experience’ is significant in that it makes it possible to show the non-contradiction between the subjective and the objective faculties of the person, as well as between the person’s adherence to truth and her freedom. Some hazards posed by the operation of hydraulic systems, connected with low-frequency vibrations and noise are presented. Special attention is focused on infrasounds. The sources of low-frequency vibrations and noise and the ways of reducing them are indicated. Moreover, this paper deals with the effects of external mechanical vibrations on hydraulic valves. An original solution ensuring the effective reduction of vibrations and noise in a wide frequency range, i.e. a wide-band damper of pressure fluctuations, also performing the function of an acoustic filter, is proposed. The results of preliminary experimental tests of simple vibration insulators are reported. The effectiveness of the damper has been confirmed by the results of laboratory tests and tests carried out on engineering machines working in real conditions.Problems relating to the noise emitted into the environment by machines equipped with hydraulic systems are covered by Polish and EU standards and directives, e.g. PN-ISO 9612:2004, Directive No. 2000/14/EC and Directive No. 98/37/WE.

Opis:
The author is indicating changes which took place within the interrelation among the family and the individual, from premodernity to postmodernity. The author is demonstrating, that contemporary shape of the family, which through by many researchers is named as the crisis of even a fall of the family, is a result of the long process consisting in the renegotiation of mutual duties and the possibility between the individual and family structure. The contemporary model of the relation between the individual and the family, consisting in weakening the family as the institution along with becoming stronger stayed of the individuals, which realize their purposes and desires mainly apart from her structures. In the author’s opinion the family is still an important institution for the human being. The contemporary family is also an only institution which is defending the individual against negative impacts of postmodernity.

The work presents the research and analysis concerning general low frequency vibration and its effect on energy balance of a human organism (a comparison with a control group). The research was conducted in two phases: a group exposed to vibration and a control group. An exposed group (28 participants) took part in 19 training sessions, each lasting 20 min, of low frequency vibration (around 3.2 Hz in standing position) applied to each participant at fixed time of the day. Before and after the session, the thermographic images were taken and deep temperature was taken too. The control group (33 participants) also took part in 19 everyday 20-min sessions with no vibrations and only measurements conducted. The results were analysed concerning statistics using Statistica. For the sake of the analysis the significance level was p = 0.05, the parametric T - test, and the non-parametric Kołmogorow-Smirnow tests were used for two groups of independent variables. Having conducted the research and analysis, one can state that 20-min exposure to low frequency vibration results in significant positive changes in chosen parameters.

The main purpose of this article is to prove that one can become a personality only through culture. The authors propose to regard culture as a relatively autonomous spiritual sphere, which transcends the narrow requirements of the concrete society in its historical limitations. They argue that personality is the highest level of human development to emerge in culture, whereas the level of a biosocial organism is provided by society. The authors claim that only culture, be it religious or secular, contains an existential and spiritual imperative which demands each human being to realize one’s own potential humanity. They explain why in a postmodern world culture becomes an “existential choice” of each human being, depending on one’s free will: to inherit the culture, to become a human being of humanity or not. In the Free school of philosophy and culture seminars (Odesa, Ukraine), the authors propose to enter the field of culture through the mutual interpretation of a chosen masterpiece of world literature and to link its message with our lives.

Opis:
The subject of the work is an attempt to analyse the notion of dignity in legal sciences, especially in legal theory and philosophy of law. The author distinguishes autonomous and heteronomous version of the notion in question. The first way of conceiving human dignity, assumes that dignity, i.e. the worth of human life, is fully independent of social conditions in which people live their lives. This way of conceiving dignity epitomises Kant’s philosophy of moral autonomy as immanent trait of every human being. The second way of conceiving human dignity assumes that the worth of human life is fully dependent of social conditions in which people live their lives. Consequently, it is taken for granted that there are social conditions in which people can lose dignity as contingent trait of human being. In this case, in order to get back lost dignity, people ought to change social conditions by way of social revolution. This way of conceiving dignity epitomises Marxist philosophy of alienation. The author tends to point out, that a different way of conceiving dignity is followed by serious legal consequences.

Opis:
Status bycia osobą przysługuje jedynie ludziom sprawnym, samodzielnym, aktywnie i twórczo uczestniczącym w życiu społecznym. Likwidacja najsłabszych, czyli aborcja i eutanazja, jest wymogiem wręcz niezbędnym, aby zapewnić wysoką jakość życia osobom „lepszym” i „silniejszym”. Wynika stąd jasno, że przy takim podejściu występuje realne niebezpieczeństwo „nieludzkiego” traktowania człowieka, dehumanizacji i barbarzyństwa.
Boethius’ definition of a person: Individua substantia rationalis naturae was recognized as classical and has not lost anything of its meaning, although throughout centuries many new elements showing uniqueness and complexity of personal existence have been noticed. It was highlighted that a human being as a person predominates nature and any community. Recently there has been a clash of two totally diverse standpoints. One of them represented by classical, metaphysical thought according to which a human being is a person from the very fact of existence. Always, from the beginning till the end - regardless of age, acquired skills, qualifications and functions performed – a human being is a person, invariably he/she is what he/she is and therefore he/she is entitled to unquestionable canon of rights and on our part to the duty to respect and love. Representatives of the other standpoint multiply criteria which exclude more and more people from the circle of persons. Persons are not children in prenatal period, newborns, old, sick and disabled people as well as those facing death. The former group of human beings are ‘not yet persons’ and the latter are ‘ex persons’. The quality of their life is lower than the quality of a healthy animal’s life. The status of being a person is reserved only to people who are fit, self-reliant and participate in social life in an active and creative way. Liquidation of the weakest that is abortion and euthanasia is an indispensable requirement to ensure high quality of life to the’ better ‘and ‘stronger’ ones. It can be easily concluded that such attitude may bring about real danger of ‘inhuman’ treatment of a human being, dehumanization and savagery.

Opis:
The author takes as a genuine and true value only that which really suits us in some respect, and not that which is our or somebody else’s illusion. He emphasizes that every being turns out to be axiologically manifold. The human person is a value in himself and invariably remains as such. According to the author the natural dignity of the human being has been upgraded by the Redemption of Christ. A Christian should feel it his duty to confirm his status of „being a person” which was bestowed on him in God’s creative act. He should respect this dignity which makes him an heir to Redemption. In our times there are various dangers on the way of personal culture, the dangers of our consciousness being filled up by trifle things or illusory „values”. They do not enrich man’s personality. Yet there are those still whose realization enriches the human being but only in an incidental and transitory manner. They constitute an episode in one’s life as a train of experience. A train of experiencing whatever is not yet a full human life. The latter expresses itself in its affirmation of the other person as a person, on the account of the fact that he or she is a person and has his or her own dignity. If such a gift of oneself is a sincere and genuine one, then it enriches the giver himself as an unquestionable right, a title to a common interpersonal esteem. Such a gift expresses the truth about love which makes the most precious meaning of life and death.
