Opis:
ESR measurements at room temperature have been performed on fossil bones of cave bear (from Magurska Cave of the Tatra Mountains) and mammoth (from Dniestr River). Various paramagnetic centres related to defects in hydroxyapatite were identified. The ESR spectrum is dominated by Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ lines and free radical centres CO$\text{}_{2}^{-}$ and CO$\text{}_{3}^{-}$. Suitability of various EPR lines for the dating was evaluated. The spectra are affected by γ-ray and UV irradiation which produce new relatively unstable (transient) radical centres. From their decay curves we determined the delay period (waiting time) between irradiation and ESR dating measurements. For γ-rays the period is about 15 days and depends on the chosen ESR line. UV generates mainly surface O$\text{}^{-}$ centres which decay practically after a few days. The ESR dating of the bear bones using an additive dose method given the age t = 21.7 kiloyears (ky), whereas from radionuclide Th/U method t= 34 ky and from radiocarbon $\text{}^{14}$C method t > 33.1 ky.

Opis:
Natural calcite samples were collected from the dripstone layers of the Black Cave of the Tatra Mountains. ESR spectra, thermal analysis, and thermoluminescence data were analysed to obtain a consistent picture of the calcite properties. The ESR spectra were analysed using computer enhanced resolution spectra and an influence of the thermal annealing on intensity of individual ESR lines was measured. These results together with the effects of γ-irradiation in ESR spectra allowed one to discriminate between ESR lines from various paramagnetic centres. A general conclusion of the paper is that in the ESR dating the outer ESR lines of CO$\text{}_{3}^{-}$ (g=2.0125) and CO$\text{}_{2}^{-}$ (g=1.9980) radicals should be used instead of the commonly used multicomponent central line.

Opis:
Commercially available poly-(1,4-phenylene sulfide) = PPS with trade names TEDUR and RYTON contain a great amount of Fe(III) (order of 10$\text{}^{20}$ Fe/gram) as shown by electron spin resonance spectra. The curing of the pure and Fe-doped (0.2% Fe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$) PPS polymers proves that Fe(III) can be used for improvement of the PPS strength by increasing the polymer cross-linking and a decrease in the polymer crystallinity degree as shown by X-ray diffraction.

A detailed computer analysis of the electron spin echo envelope modulations of SeO$\text{}_{3}$ radical in a suitable orientation of (NH$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{3}$H(SeO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ single crystal is presented. It was found that the modulations are due to a weak dipolar coupling with nitrogens and protons of the only two neighbouring NH$\text{}_{4}$ groups among the five NH$\text{}_{4}$ groups surrounding SeO¯$\text{}_{3}$ center. Isotropic dipolar coupling constant is 1.7 MHz for nitrogens and 0.9 MHz for protons. It was shown that thermal reorientations of NH$\text{}_{4}$ groups observed by NMR have a negligible effect on the electron spin echo envelope modulation pattern but can be responsible for the same value of a$\text{}^{H}$$\text{}_{iso}$ for all protons in a NH$\text{}_{4}$ group. A good fit obtained between experimental spectra and theoretical calculations assuming nondisturbed crystal geometry indicates a small damage of the crystal by X-rays during the radical center formation.

Introduction: Marfan’s syndrome is a heritable multisystem connective tissue disorder resulting from mutations in the gene for fibrillin-1 (FBN1). This disorder shows a high degree of clinical variability both between and within families. Affected patients are at risk for severe skeletal, cardiovascular and ocular problems. The diagnosis is usually based on clinical features. Material and method: We reviewed the clinical and molecular data of 8 patients who was hospitalised in Paediatric Cardiology Department in Katowice. There were 5 boys and 3 girls, 9-17 years old, referred for FBN1 analysis because they fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Marfan’s syndrome. The clinical diagnosis and the family history was made by the criteria of the Ghent nosology. Mutation analysis of the FBN1 gene were identified by DHPLC screening of all 65 exons and adjacent intron sequences, followed by direct sequencing of aberrant fragments. Results: All of the patients presented typical clinical manifestation of Marfan’s syndrome. There was no child with the neonatal Marfan's syndrome. Four of them, including 3 persons who were siblings, had a positive family history. Pathogenic mutations were found in the 4 patients and probably pathogenic mutations in the 4 patients too. Conclusions: The clinical diagnosis using the Ghent nosology corresponds to the molecular analysis. Specific genetic tests are difficult of access and expensive so they are not necessary in patients who fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for Marfan’s syndrome.
Wstęp: Zespół Marfana jest wielonarządową chorobą tkanki łącznej spowodowaną mutacją genu fibryliny-1 (FBN1). Cechuje go duża różnorodność objawów, także wtedy, gdy występuje u osób spokrewnionych. U pacjentów stwierdza się istotne nieprawidłowości w zakresie układu kostnego, sercowo-naczyniowego i w narządzie wzroku. Rozpoznanie najczęściej ustalane jest na podstawie objawów klinicznych. Materiał i metoda: Badaniem objęto 8 dzieci (5 chłopców i 3 dziewczynki) w wieku od 9 do 17 lat, hospitalizowanych w Klinice Kardiologii Dziecięcej w Katowicach. Diagnozę zespołu Marfana postawiono na podstawie badania klinicznego i molekularnego. Diagnostykę kliniczną i wywiad rodzinny przeprowadzono w oparciu o kryteria Ghent. U pacjentów przeprowadzono badania molekularne w kierunku mutacji genu FBN1. Mutację oceniano metodą DHPLC w zakresie wszystkich 65 eksonów i przyległych intronów tego genu, następnie wykonano dokładne sekwencjonowanie nieprawidłowych fragmentów. Na przeprowadzenie badań uzyskano zgodę rodziców i zgodę Komisji Etycznej przy Śląskim Uniwersytecie Medycznym. Wyniki: Wszyscy nasi pacjenci prezentowali pełnoobjawowy zespół Marfana, u nikogo nie stwierdzono zmian w okresie noworodkowym. Czworo z nich, w tym troje rodzeństwa, miało dodatni wywiad rodzinny. U czworga dzieci badaniem molekularnym wykryto mutację patogenną, a u pozostałych czworga mutację prawdopodobnie patogenną zespołu Marfana. Wnioski: Rozpoznanie zespołu Marfana u dzieci na podstawie klasyfikacji Ghent wykazuje zgodność z wynikami badań molekularnych. Badania molekularne ze względu na ich trudną dostępność i wysoką cenę nie zawsze są konieczne do ustalenia rozpoznania.

W artykule opisano X Walne Zgromadzenie Stowarzyszenia Elektryków Polskich z lipca 1938 roku. To ewenement w historii polskiego środowiska technicznego okresu międzywojennego. Pomysł zrealizowania zjazdu połączonego z wycieczką do Szwecji na transatlantyku m/s „Piłsudski” był na tyle niekonwencjonalny i obarczony ryzykiem, że od samego początku napotykał na wiele głosów krytycznych. Przygotowania do X WZ SEP trwały prawie 2 lata przy ogromnym zaangażowaniu osobistym członków Zarządu Głównego SEP m.in. Alfonsa Hoffmanna i Kazimierza Szpotańskiego. Zjazd zarówno pod względem organizacyjnym jak i towarzyskim wypadł doskonale. Niestety koncepcja urządzania podobnych imprez co 20 lat nie doczekała się realizacji.
The article describes the X General Assembly of the Polish Electrical Engineers Association in July 1938 year. It is unique in the history of Polish technical environment interwar period. The idea to realize the assembly combined with a trip to Sweden on the liner m/s "Pilsudski" was so unconventional and subject to the risk that from the very beginning it faced a lot of criticism. Preparations for the X GA lasted almost two years at a huge personal commitment of the members of the Board of the SEP among others Alfons Hoffmann and Kazimierz Szpotański. Congress both in terms of organization and social proceeded perfectly. The concept of arranging similar events every 20 years has never been realized.

The Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions have been adsorbed by four potato starches of different degrees of oxidation (different numbers of COOH groups replacing host CH$\text{}_{2}$OH groups): native (no oxidized), white (pudding) with oxidation degree of 0.04%, gelating (0.1%), and LUBOX starch (0.5%). Concentration of the ions in starches was determined from atomic absorption and EPR spectrum intensity. For small concentration of the adsorbed ions (below 4 mg/g) nearly all ions are adsorbed from the solution. EPR shows that adsorbed copper(II) ions are chemically bonded to the starch molecules (preferably) at COOH sites and uniformly dispersed in the starch structure. The complexes are typical of octahedral or square-quadratic coordination with spin-Hamiltonian parameters g$\text{}_{ǁ}$=2.373, g$\text{}_{⊥}$= 2.080, A$\text{}_{ǁ}$=12.1 mT, A$\text{}_{⊥}$=1.0 mT. For higher concentrations the Cu(II) displays a tendency to clustering. Iron(III) ions are introduced into starch in a form of clusters mainly, even for the smallest concentration. The highest concentrations of both Cu(II) and Fe(III) were observed in LUBOX starch having the highest degree of oxidation.

The composition of solvent-soluble organic matter of phosphorite, which is a precursor of volatile organic compounds emitted by the fertilizer industry, was studied. A benzene-methanol mixture and chloroform were used for the extraction of free and bound bitumen from phosphorites, respectively. The separated bitumen fractions were characterized qualitatively by GC-MS and quantitatively by GC-FID. n-Alkanes, n-alkenes, fatty acids and isoprenoids were identified in the extracts. The main components were n-alkanes and n-alkenes, constituting over 80% of the total bitumen determined. An unexpected presence of n-alkenes only in the free bitumen fraction was found. The possible source of ill-smelling substances evolved during treatment of phosphorite with H2SO4 was discussed.

We report an electron paramagnetic resonance investigation of the grain size effects on the polaron transport in the paramagnetic regime of nanosized La$\text{}_{2}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{3}$ Ca$\text{}_{1}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{3}$ MnO$\text{}_{3}$ manganites. The temperature dependences of the EPR integral intensity were analyzed in terms of spin-spin exchange interaction and small polaron hopping scenarios. The polaron activation energy decreases with the reduction of the grain size. A discussion is given concerning the factors which could explain the observed change.

Transport integrals I$\text{}_{n}$(Θ$\text{}_{D}$/T) are reviewed with their applications in solid-state physics, molecular dynamics, and electron spin-lattice relaxation. Analytical approximations of I$\text{}_{n}$ for n=2-8 are proposed as applicable for computer fitting procedures in the range of the variable x=Θ$\text{}_{D}$/T from 0.1 to 40. The results are applied for description of the spin-lattice relaxation data collected for Cu$\text{}^{2+}$ ions in triglycine sulphate and are compared with relaxation data for Cu$\text{}^{2+}$ and Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ in (NH$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$Mg(SO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$·6H$\text{}_{2}$O.

Artykuł poświęcony jest recenzji książki Joanny Dybiec-Gajer pt. Złota różdżka – od książki dla dzieci po dreszczowiec raczej dla dorosłych (Kraków 2017), w której autorka analizuje polską historię przekładu i recepcji światowego bestselleru Heinricha Hoffmanna pt. Struwwelpeter. W dalszej części artykułu zaprezentowany został nowy polski przekład dzieła Hoffmanna pt. Złota różdżka (Egmont 2017). Rezultaty badań Dybiec-Gajer stają się następnie asumptem do refleksji nad tradycją czytania i przekładania literatury dla dzieci w Polsce przy szczególnym uwzględnieniupolskojęzycznej recepcji baśni braci Grimm i związanego z nimi stereotypowego przekonania o ich szczególnym „okrucieństwie”.
The paper is first of all a review of Joanna Dybiec-Gajer’s book Złota różdżka – od książki dla dzieci po dreszczowiec raczej dla dorosłych (2017) which discusses the translation and reception of the worldwide bestseller by Heinrich Hoffmann Struwwelpeter in Poland. Apart from this, a contemporary Polish adaptation of the German original is presented (Złota różdżka, Warsaw: Egmont 2017). Dybiec-Gajer’s research, presented in the discussed book, opens up questions concerning reception and translation of (German) children’s literature in Poland, including the Children’s and Household Tales by Brothers Grimm, especially the concept of their “cruelty” which seems to be based on prejudice and results from lacking knowledge of the original fairy tales.

Dieser Beitrag widmet sich der Rolle der Musik in E. T. A. Hoffmanns Die Automate (1814) aus dem Erzählzyklus Die Serapions-Brüder (1819-1821). Der Gegensatz ‚innen/außen‘ innerhalb des romantischen Diskurses über das ‚Gemüt‘ erhält dabei besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Die Musik fungiert in Hoffmanns Text als Gefühlsausdruck und ‚Gemütherregungskunst‘ (Novalis) und folgt damit dem ‚serapiontischen Prinzip‘. Zugleich wird durch Teile der Handlung die Innerlichkeit von Gefühl und Musik infrage gestellt, indem deren äußere Aspekte inszeniert werden, die den Gesetzen einer seelenlosen Mechanik zu gehorchen scheinen.
This article discusses the role of music in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s The Automata (1814) from his collection of stories The Serapion Brethren (1819–1821). Particular attention is paid to the opposition ‘inner/outer’ within the Romantic discourse on the ‘Gemüt’ (soul, heart). In Hoffmann’s text, music functions as an emotional expression and ‘Gemütherregungskunst’ (‘art of stirring the heart’, as coined by Novalis). In doing so, it follows the ‘Serapiontic Principle’. At the same time, the inwardness of emotions and music is questioned by parts of the plot that highlight their external aspects that seem to obey the laws of a soulless mechanics.

Opis:
A hydrazinium ṄH-NH$\text{}_{3}^{+}$ radical was identified by ESR in γ-irradiated Li(N$\text{}_{2}$H$\text{}_{5}$)SO$\text{}_{4}$ single crystal. Unpaired electron is strongly localized on the nitrogen atom as compared to hydrazinium radicals in other crystals. Angular variations of the multicomponent ESR spectra and computer calculations gave the isotropic hyperfine coupling parameters (in mT): a$\text{}_{N1}$ = 1.93, a$\text{}_{N2}$ = 0.80, a$\text{}_{H1}$ = 2.50, a$\text{}_{H1'}$ = 0.48 (NH$\text{}_{3}$), and a$\text{}_{H2}$ = 1.40 (adjacent molecule). The radiation defects containing unpaired electrons do not influence much the protonic conductivity along the hydrazine molecule chains in the crystal. It confirms a tunelling mechanism of the conductivity activated by NH$\text{}_{2}$-group rotation. Spin-lattice relaxation time T$\text{}_{1}$ varies strongly with temperature in the range from 100 ms (10 K) to 90 μs (170 K) and is governed by spectral diffusion (1/T$\text{}_{1}$ ∝ T$\text{}^{2}$) and a Murphy-type mechanism (1/T$\text{}_{1}$ ∝ cosech(Δ/T)) with Δ = 150 cm$\text{}^{-1}$. A distribution of the spin-relaxation times was observed with temperature independent dispersion parameter β = 0.76.

Opis:
Dank seiner Natürlichkeit, Einfachheit, Authentizität, Unmittelbarkeit, Reinheit, Sinnlichkeit und Naturverbundenheit spielt der Gesang in der Literatur der Romantik eine besondere Rolle. In den Erzählungen von E. T. A. Hoffmann wird er als ein musikalisches Geschehen betrachtet, das durch die Singstimme körperlich-sinnlich die Transzendenzerfahrung wiedergibt. Ihm wird deswegen die Funktion eines Mediums zugesprochen, welches die Resonanz des Übermenschlichen (des Unaussprechlichen – Göttlichen oder Dämonischen) im Inneren eines Menschen schafft.
Due to its naturalness, simplicity, authenticity, ingenuousness, pureness, sensuality and connection to nature, singing plays a special role in the literature of Romanticism. In E. T. A. Hoffmann’s short stories, singing is seen as a musical event, where singing voice helps convey transcendent experience through physical and sensory sensations. This is why singing is endowed with the function of a medium which creates the resonance of superhuman (indescribable – divine or demonic) in the inner world of a person.
