Opis:
In recent years, analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) has become a common tool for prediction of cardiac mortality. The universal rule is that a reduced variability is a signature for enhanced risk. However, the clinical value of the usual methods (the calculation of averages, standard deviations and variances of RR interval subsets, analysis of the power spectra in frequency domain) is very limited: false positive results cut the positive predictive value down to about 30%. We applied a net information flow method of determination of complexity in deterministic chaos (associated with nonlinear dynamics) to 24 hour recordings of beat-to-beat heart-rate. It is likely that analysis of HRV by the means of nonlinear dynamics may open a way for a new classification of HRV.

The analysis of heart rate variability can be used to predict cardiovascular state in diabetic children. Studies on HRV are mainly based on RR intervals of the ECG signal and include both linear indices and nonlinear characteristics. The current study aims at applying Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis to investigate signals of the heart rate variability (HRV) in 50 healthy children (group K), 27 patients suffering from diabetes type 1 without subsequent vascular complications (group A) and 35 patients suffering from diabetes type 1 with subsequent vascular complications (hypertension) (group B). Multifractal features were extracted to quantitatively compare signal complexity between the healthy group and the group of children with diabetes and diabetes with complications. The MFDFA analysis showed the multi-fractional nature of the signals in all groups. The characteristic MFDFA parameters were determined and subjected to statistical analysis. It showed differences in parameters h(1) and h(2) between the control group K and group A. This gives rise to the development of further research in an attempt to distinguish between these groups.

Opis:
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a well established mortality risk factor in both healthy dogs and those with heart failure. While the standards for short-term HRV analysis have been developed in humans, only reference values for HRV parameters determined from 24-hour ECG have been proposed in dogs. The aim of this study was to develop the reference values for short-term HRV parameters in a group of 50 healthy dogs of various breeds (age 4.86 ± 2.74 years, body weight 12.2 ± 3.88 kg). The ECG was recorded continuously for at least 180 min in a dark and quiet room. All electrocardiograms were inspected automatically and manually to eliminate atrial or ventricular premature complexes. Signals were transformed into a spectrum using the fast Fourier transform. The HRV parameters were measured at fixed times from 60-min ECG segments. The following time-domain parameters (ms) were analyzed: mean NN, SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index, rMSSD and pNN50. Moreover, frequency-domain parameters (Hz) were determined, including very low frequency (VLF), low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) components, total power (TP) and the LF/HF ratio. The results (means ± SD) were as follows: mean NN = 677.68 ± 126.89; SDNN = 208.86 ± 77.1; SDANN = 70.75 ± 30.9; SDNN index = 190.75 ± 76.12; rMSSD = 259 ± 120.17, pNN50 = 71.84 ± 13.96; VLF = 984.96 ± 327.7; LF = 1501.24 ± 736.32; HF = 5845.45 ± 2914.20; TP = 11065.31 ± 3866.87; LF/HF = 0.28 ± 0.11.

The goal of the study was to determine the effect of a 1-h hour long forklift truck virtual simulator driving on the mechanism of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation in operators. The participants were divided into 2 subgroups: subjects with no definite inclination to motion sickness (group A) and subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness (group B). Holter monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was carried out in all subjects during the virtual simulator driving. For 12 consecutive epochs of ECG signal, HR variability analysis was conducted in time and frequency domains. In subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness after ~30 min of the driving, changes in parameter values were found indicating an increase in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity with parasympathetic dominance.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and to compare the exercise intensity of U-20 and U-17 players during official championship Soccer games, using as parameter of effort the %HRmax. The study had also the purpose of comparing the results between the first half time and the second half time of the game and was to compare the HRmax recorded during a friendly game and six official games. Twenty-five male Soccer players who have been playing this sport for an average of five years participated in the study. The athletes trained for about 16 hours and played 2 championship games weekly. The results showed if the exercise intensity was lower in the second half time of the game suggesting that there might have been a decrease in performance capacity of the players. The exercise intensity of was also lower during the friendly game than during the official games. It is possible that motivation also plays a role causing this difference. The exercise intensity from a friendly game should not be used as reference for official games.

The objective of this work is to set up a methodology that considers missing data from a connected heartbeat sensor in order to propose a good replacement methodology in the context of heart rate variability (HRV) computation. The framework is a research project, which aims to build a system that can measure stress and other factors influencing the onset and development of heart disease. The research encompasses studying existing methods, and improving them by use of experimental data from case study that describe the participant’s everyday life. We conduct a study to modelize stress from the HRV signal, which is extracted from a heart rate monitor belt connected to a smart watch. This paper describes data recording procedure and data imputation methodology. Missing data is a topic that has been discussed by several authors. The manuscript explains why we choose spline interpolation for data values imputation. We implement a random suppression data procedure and simulate removed data. After that, we implement several algorithms and choose the best one for our case study based on the mean square error.

Opis:
Cardiotocography is a monitoring technique providing important and vital information on fetal status during antepartum and intrapartum periods. The advances in modern obstetric practice allowed many robust and reliable machine learning techniques to be utilized in classifying fetal heart rate signals. The role of machine learning approaches in diagnosing diseases is becoming increasingly essential and intertwined. The main aim of the present study is to determine the most efficient machine learning technique to classify fetal heart rate signals. Therefore, the research has been focused on the widely used and practical machine learning techniques, such as artificial neural network, support vector machine, extreme learning machine, radial basis function network, and random forest. In a comparative way, fetal heart rate signals were classified as normal or hypoxic using the aforementioned machine learning techniques. The performance metrics derived from confusion matrix were used to measure classifiers' success. According to experimental results, although all machine learning techniques produced satisfactory results, artificial neural network yielded the rather well results with the sensitivity of 99.73% and specificity of 97.94%. The study results show that the artificial neural network was superior to other algorithms.

Opis:
Heart rate turbulence (HRT) is modulated by the baroreceptor reflex and it was suggested that it could be used as a measure of autonomic dysfunction. Impaired HRT is of a significant prognostic value in humans after myocardial infarction, suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and patients with heart failure. So far no studies were performed assessing the importance of HRT in dogs. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the HRT turbulence onset (TO) and the turbulence slope (TS) in healthy dogs and in dogs with DCM and to compare the HRT in dogs with DCM that died during the first 30 days of observation and dogs with DCM that survived the first 30 days after the HRT analysis. The current study was aimed at determining reference value of the TO and TS of HRT in healthy dogs (control group) and dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM group). The tests were carried out on 30 healthy dogs and 30 dogs with DCM composed of Boxers, Doberman pinschers and Great Danes, of different sexes and body weights from 22 to 72 kg, aged between 1.5 and 11.5 years, submitted to the 24-hour Holter monitoring. HRT parameters were calculated using an HolCard software algorithm. TO is a percentage difference between the heart rate immediately following ventricular premature complex (VPC) and the heart rate immediately preceding VPC. TS corresponds to the steepest slope of the linear regression line for each sequence of five consecutive normal intervals in the local tachogram. The average TO in healthy dogs was determined as -13.55 ± 11.12%, TS was 21.33 ± 9.66 ms/RR. TO in dogs with DCM was determined as - 2.61 ± 2.1% and TS was 6.15 ± 3.86 ms/RR. Parameters of HRT were statistically significantly decreased (p<0.01) in dogs with DCM. HRT TO and TS were statistically significantly decreased in dogs with DCM. Dogs with DCM that survived more than 30 days of observation had HRT statistically significantly decreased in comparison to dogs with DCM that died after the 30’th day of observation. Decreased HRT parameters in dogs with DCM suggest an autonomic neuropathy which principally consists of the withdrawal of the cardiac parasympathetic tone. The more the autonomic neuropathy is advanced the faster the death of the dog with DCM might occur, with no correlation with the level of the heart failure.

Heart rate turbulence (HRT) is a new electrocardiographic parameter used in human medicine to predict the possibility of death in patients with cardiac diseases. There is no information about HRT in healthy dogs and those with cardiac diseases. The aim of the present study was to compare the HRT in healthy Boxers dogs with Boxers with mild and moderate subaortic stenosis (SAS), to disclose the relationship between HRT and specific echocardiographic parameters and to evaluate if HRT can be used as a prognostic value in dogs with aortic stenosis. The study revealed significantly lower values of turbulence onset (TO) and turbulence slope (TS) HRT dogs with SAS (TO = -0.76 ± 2.6, TS = 7.1 ± 3.21) in compared with healthy dogs (TO = -7.45 ± 9.72, TS = 14.33 ± 8.76). TO values correlated with the left ventricular mass (LVM)/body mass factor (r = 0,32; p = 0.048). Based on the results obtained it can be stated that dogs with SAS have a compromised baroreceptor response, which can influence the mortality of the animals with described cardiac defect.

Acceleration and deceleration patterns in fetal heart rate (FHR) are widely used as an assessment of fetal condition. The basis for both visual and automated quantitative analysis is correctly determined fetal heart rate baseline. There are many methods for automated fetal heart rate baseline estimation. Since there are no definitive criteria or "gold standard" to evaluate algorithms for baseline determination, a clinical expert could be considered as a reference. Taking into account that not the shape of baseline itself but the results of quantitative analysis obtained using this baseline are important, we stated that such evaluation should be done only on the basis of comparison of effects - the recognized accelerations and decelerations. However, the first step for such comparison is to check how well expert meets established FIGO definition of accelerations and decelerations patterns in FHR trace. The paper presents a method for evaluation of expert's interpretation of these definitions. Two indices describing the inconsistency among fetal monitoring system and experts have been defined. The results obtained indicate the essential differences in procedure of accelerations/decelerations recognition by the computerized system and human expert.

The study on cognitive workload is a field of research of high interest in the digital society. The implementation of ‘Industry 4.0’ paradigm asks the smart operators in the digital factory to accomplish more ‘cognitive-oriented’ than ‘physical-oriented’ tasks. The Authors propose an analytical model in the information theory framework to estimate the cognitive workload of operators. In the model, subjective and physiological measures are adopted to measure the work load. The former refers to NASA-TLX test expressing subjective perceived work load. The latter adopts Heart Rate Variability (HRV) of individuals as an objective indirect measure of the work load. Subjective and physiological measures have been obtained by experiments on a sample subjects. Subjects were asked to accomplish standardized tasks with different cognitive loads according to the ‘n-back’ test procedure defined in literature. Results obtained showed potentialities and limits of the analytical model proposed as well as of the experimental subjective and physiological measures adopted. Research findings pave the way for future developments.
