In 2011 Élise Turcotte released Guyana, a historiographic metafiction in which the characters come to realize the sheer impossibility of accessing a collective imagination. The famous Jonestown massacre surges to the forefront of the writing through the murder of Kimi, a hairdresser from Montreal, and initiates a frantic quest for the understanding of self through another, in order to get past the ineffable characteristic of the past. This article will explore the metafictional aspect of Guyana and its polyphonic narration before revaluating the stakes of, and the way in which we perceive, tales of trauma.

Opis:: This paper draws on ethnographic interviews with women-loving women (WLW) in Berbice, Guyana, South America, to interrogate the Creole linguistic term “deh” as a cultural heuristic device central to the visibility politics in this rural community. The linguistic concept of “deh” is a localized Creole (a dialect produced from the mixing of African, Indian, and Indigenous languages), which unsettles the Western image of the “closet” and the discourse of “coming out.” “Deh” is a double-entendre referring to a spatial location, like “over there,” and to a romantic or sexual relationship between two people. How might the linguistic concept of “deh” open up a discursive epistemological space where same-sex desires are not marginalized or relegated in rural spaces? How do women loving women (WLW) create the conditions for their existence in rural spaces? Analyzing nine interviews with WLW, this paper explores how Black and Brown women-loving women embody and express their same-sex desires through the Creole concept of “deh” and argues that “deh” exposes the colonial violence of language. Through “deh,” WLW offers a framework for rethinking self-making and repositioning their relationship to the broader society and the state. The colonial/modern system imposes and projects LGBTQ as a global framework for understanding human sexuality; as a transgressive linguistic and embodied sexual praxis, “deh” destabilizes the colonial knowledge of gender and sexual practices in Berbice. As such, this paper can be read as an act of decolonizing Western knowledge systems.

Celem podjętych rozważań jest analiza wyborów w Gujanie, Trynidadzie i Tobago oraz Belize, które przeprowadzono w 2020 r., kiedy to świat zmagał się z pandemią COVID-19.
One of the cornerstones of modern democracies is free elections. The global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus has created numerous difficulties for many countries in holding elections at both the local and central levels. Problems arising from their conduct also affected countries belonging to the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). The purpose of the discussion undertaken was to analyze the elections in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Belize, which were held in 2020, when the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opis:: A review of recent publications concerning the South American Pantepui biogeographic region revealed recurring mistakes in the naming of several table mountains (known locally as 'tepui', 'tipu' or 'tepuy') located around the Guyana-Venezuela border, close to the transection of the so-called Schomburgk Line and the course of Rio Venamo. The mistakes are believed to have arisen and have been repeated as a result of a noticeable scarcity of detailed maps of the region, its short history of exploration and ongoing inaccessibility. An extensive analysis of modern satellite data and records of past research expeditions, supplemented by first-hand observations and assessment made during an expedition to Waukauyengtipu in the CuyuniMazaruni Region in Guyana in January 2019, are used to clarify the nomenclatural confusion regarding the tepuis of the area. We determine that the tepuis known as Cerro Venamo and Waukauyengtipu should be treated as separate and distinct geographic formations.
