    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie wkładu Józefa Grycza w ujednolicenie zasad katalogowania w Polsce. Przeanalizowano jego korespondencję z czołowymi ówczesnymi bibliotekarzami, co pozwoliło odtworzyć działania, które doprowadziły do wydania Przepisów katalogowania w bibliotekach polskich w1934 r. Przedwojenny wysiłek przyczynił się do publikacji w 1946 r. pierwszego wydania Skróconych przepisów katalogowania alfabetycznego. Potem ukazywały się kolejne wydania, przy których pomagała W. Borkowska. W artykule scharakteryzowano najważniejsze problemy doprecyzowywane wprzepisach katalogowania. Skrócone przepisyfunkcjonowały wPolsce ponad 40 lat. Przez tak długi okres posługiwano się nimi przy wyborze hasła. W czasach komputeryzacji inorm warto pamiętać otrudnych początkach itwórcy przepisów katalogowania.
    The article aims at demonstrating the input of Józef Grycz into the unification of cataloguing rules in Polish libraries. To this end the author analyzed Grycz’s correspondence with other leading Polish librarians. This allowed for the reconstruction of his activities, which resulted in the publishing of the Cataloguing Rules for Polish Libraries in 1934. The experience gained during the interwar period proved beneficial for Grycz’s second cataloguing manual, published in 1946 (Abbreviated Regulations for Alphabetical Cataloguing). This book was reprinted many times in the following years. In preparing the later editions, Grycz was assisted by W. Borkowska. The article also discusses the most important issues settled by the rules worked out by Grycz. The Abbreviated Regulations... provided the basis for cataloguing activities in Poland for over forty years and dictated the choices of headings. Nowadays, when computer cataloguing is the normal and natural procedure, it is well worth to keep in mind how difficult were the beginnings, and to remember the person who paved the way towards modern cataloguing.

    Tematem artykułu są straty wojenne w polskich zbiorach bibliotecznych w czasie II wojny światowej oraz próby odbudowania zniszczonych i rozkradzionych księgozbiorów. Autor wskazuje, że w latach 1939-1945 zniszczeniu uległo ok. 70% całości zbiorów w centralnej i zachodniej Polsce. Przedstawiono działalność Józefa Grycza, który w czasie niemieckiej okupacji stanął na czele Biblioteki Narodowej, przemianowanej przez Niemców na II Oddział Biblioteki Państwowej. To według jego planów podejmowano praktycznie wszystkie działania ratujące polskie zbiory w okresie powojennym. Poruszono kwestię konieczności stworzenia w powojennej Polsce nowych regulacji prawnych dotyczących ochrony zabytków i księgozbiorów, a także działalność siedmiu zbiornic-segregatorni księgozbiorów, utworzonych 1 lutego 1947 roku.

    The article presents the problem related to the protection of written sources in Poland after World War II. The first attempt to draw up a legal document was made in 1944. From 1945, activities, based on legal provisions, were carried on a national scale by the Ministry of Education in a planned and organized manner. The most important actions were taken in the first period of the post-war protection of library collections, i.e. until 1946. The results of the conducted research made it possible to put forward the thesis that several million books were saved during that time. Józef Grycz made a great contribution in saving valuable written heritage. The activities, conducted in extremely difficult conditions, contributed to the reconstruction of libraries, librarianship, and Polish science.

    During the Second World War Polish cultural heritage suffered severe losses. Among the persons who played an important role in the recovery of extant library collections was Józef Grycz. While the hostilities were still raging, Grycz was busy working out theoretical measures to be undertaken after the war. When peace finally came, Grycz immediately stepped in to implement his wartime ideas. During the period 1945–1949, he was active in book collection preservation on behalf of the Ministry of Enlightenment. It was on his initiative that the Central Directorate of Libraries was called into existence, as aministerial body responsible for library activities and the coordination of the all efforts in this respect undertaken by various institutions. He also published an instruction manual, which greatly facilitated works all over the country, and numerous official documents. His activities can be divided into two phases: the first one (to the end of 1946) consisted chiefly in physical protection of the recovered materials, while the second, which started with the launching of the Central Directorate at the beginning of 1947, concentrated on creating of a number of warehouses, where books were gathered, sorted, registered, and allocated with their future location in mind. Alodia Kawecka-Gryczowa, Józef Grycz’s wife, assisted him in those activities all along. The tasks undertaken by Grycz were extremely complicated and difficult. He was constantly hindered by all kinds of problems, which in the post-war Polish reality were inevitable. Nevertheless, under his guidance the salvage process covered more than ten million volumes. The significance of Grycz’s prominent personality in the preservation of Polish cultural heritage after World War II can hardly be overestimated.

    Przegląd Biblioteczny is the oldest Polish scientific periodical devoted to library science. The article recounts the activities of Józef Grycz with relation to the establishing of the journal in 1927, and next his professional engagement in the editorial works (through 1928). The author discusses Grycz’s undertakings chiefly on the basis of his articles published in Przegląd Biblioteczny, and the fragments of his correspondence with Adam Łysakowski published by Maria Dembowska. The matters which concerned Grycz the most were related to the organization and functioning of libraries in Poland.

    Alodia Gryczowa and Józef Grycz belong to the line of the most outstanding Polish librarians of the twentieth century. Their huge scientific and organizational achievement provides material for numerous works discussing the development of book history and library science in Poland. The article attempts to describe the curriculum vitae and the activities of both Alodia and Józef in relation to their papers kept at the Manuscript Department of the National Library. This archive encompasses personal materials, which reflect the line of their professional development and institutional careers, documents relative to their community service (concerning libraries, bibliophile activities, etc.), their publications, and an abundant correspondence (both professional and private). In conclusion the author acknowledges that further research is necessary to bring together the complete set of the Grycz papers. The article is supplemented with an appendix presenting a provisional list of contents of the ‘Grycz Papers’, a newly acquired fond at the Polish National Library in Warsaw.

    The article attempts to survey the years 1909–1928, which Józef Grycz spent in Cracow. His Cracovian days began with studies at the Jagiellonian University, and continued later on with work at the Jagiellonian Library. During those years he actively gathered professional experience as a librarian and distinguished himself in various activities within the librarian and bibliophile milieu. The authors bring forth unpublished manuscript archival materials from the collections of the National Library in Warsaw, the Jagiellonian Library and in the Archive of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow.

    In Poland, the idea of educating library personnel at university level has its roots already during the times of the Commission of National Education in the second half of the eighteenth century. The Grycz couple themselves belonged to the generation, which due to lack of such studies, had no degrees in library science, but in other fields of knowledge. Nevertheless, the issue of educating and training librarians to work with the reader and the book was one of their chief concerns. In their eyes the library was the ideal meeting point of the reader with the book, and the librarian – methodically prepared for the job – an ideal middle person. Alodia Kawecka-Gryczowa gained her first personal experience in training librarians in 1945. Józef Grycz among other delivered lectures at librarian courses organized in the Kórnik Library in 1945, and in the Jagiellonian Library in 1948. But his chief contribution in this field, showing to the full his pedagogical concepts with relation to librarian training, came through editing books, writing articles for journals devoted to library science, and writing textbooks and manuals aimed at educating candidates for the library profession.

    Tekst stanowi drugą część artykułu opublikowanego w t. 5 „Z badań nad książką i księgozbiorami historycznymi” z 2011 r. W pierwszej części przedstawiono udział Józefa Grycza w pracach nad Dekretem o bibliotekach i opiece nad zbiorami historycznymi wydanym 17 kwietnia 1946 r. Część druga poświęcona została działalności J. Grycza jako Naczelnego Dyrektora Bibliotek (NDB) wzakresie realizacji zapisów Dekretu dotyczących bibliotekarstwa publicznego. W szczególności zajmuje się problemem doboru, kontroli i „oczyszczania” księgozbiorów bibliotek. Kwestia ta rzutowała na ocenę przez władze prowadzenia „akcji bibliotecznej” przez NDB i na ich opinię opracy samego J. Grycza. Kolejna część artykułu dotyczy budowy sieci samorządowych bibliotek publicznych oraz uwarunkowań, zwłaszcza politycznych i finansowych, wpływających na jej przebieg. Tekst zamyka fragment analizujący zmiany jakie zaszły wbibliotekarstwie po zwolnienia J. Grycza zNDB wlutym 1949 r. ipo objęciu nadzoru nad „akcją biblioteczną” przez Wydział Oświaty i Kultury Komitetu Centralnego Polskiej Zjednoczonej Partii Robotniczej.
    Part I of this article (published in the previous volume) discussed Józef Grycz’s input into the preparation of the „Library and Library Collections Decree”, issued by the Polish Interim Government, on 17 December 1946. Part II deals first with his efforts as Director General of Libraries in Poland, regarding the implementation of the aforementioned decree with respect to public libraries. The author is interested especially in issues such as: choice of books for the libraries, control of the content of the collections, and „cleansing” of libraries of politically inappropriate books. All these issues had immediate impact on the evaluation of the activities of the Office of the General Director of Libraries, and J. Grycz personally by his Communist superiors. The latter part of the article looks into his works on creating the network of local self-government libraries, and especially the financial and political conditions of their establishing. The article is concluded with a short overview of what happened after Grycz’s dismissal in February 1949, and after the introduction of direct supervision of library activities in Poland by the Department of Enlightenment and Culture of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (the Communist Party).

    The post-war organization of public libraries attained utmost importance among the numerous initiatives undertaken by J. Grycz upon his employment (1 April 1945) by the Department of Libraries, within the Ministry of Education of the so-called Interim Government of the Republic of Poland. To this end he intended to introduce the solutions, which he worked out during the long years of the German occupation, and which were a development of his legislative initiatives brought forward already before the Second World War. The draft of the novel library law was ready as early as April 1945, but, as a result of consultations with representatives of the librarian milieu, inter-ministry co-ordinations, and numerous amendments introduced under pressures exerted by various governmental instytutions, the passing of the law was constantly postponed. Finally, the bill was passed as the ‘Library and Library Collections Decree’ by the Interim Government of National Unity on 31 January 1946. After further amendments, the Decree was confirmed by the State National Council in March 1946, and went into force on 17 April of the same year. The article analyzes the participation of J. Grycz in the legislative process, and brings out the various interests which influenced the final version of the act. It is chiefly based on Grycz’s predominantly unpublished private correspondence in the Grycz files, kept at the Manuscript Department of the Polish National Library in Warsaw. Part two of this article, dealing with the activities of J. Grycz as the head of the Central Directorate of Libraries with respect to the various aspects of functioning of the public libraries within the new legal framework, will be published in the next volume of this journal.
