Opis:
Great Britain is one of the two EU 15 countries which refused to join the Economic- Monetary Union. Despite the passage of time, Great Britain’s stand on this matter has not changed, although the last worldwide economic crisis and its consequences intensified discussion whether from Great Britain’s point of view it is worth considering possibilities of joining the euro zone. The aim of the paper is to present determinants of functioning of Great Britain in the European Union and an analysis of possible opportunities and threats which are connected with its accession to the single-currency area. Looking at the history of Great Britain, one may have an impression that what is more important for that country is keeping independence and remaining a “world” economy than turning the potential benefits to its advantage at the cost of resignation form independence and degradation to the role of a “European” country. Especially that the current economic crisis has revealed the weaknesses of the euro zone and proved that the zone as a whole has not worked out proper mechanisms of operating in a crisis situation.

The article presents the activity of Poles in Great Britain in the 20th century, beginning with the end of World War II, when a large group of Polish refugees and veterans settled in the UK. In 1947, the Federation of Poles was established to represent Polish community in Great Britain. The Association of Polish Women (1946) and the Relief Society for Poles (1946) were also formed at the same time. The article shows the involvement of the Polish community in Great Britain in the context of Polish history. This involvement included the organisation of anti-communist protests, carrying out various actions to inform people about the situation in Poland, organising material aid, supporting Poland at the time of the system transformation, and supporting Poland’s accession to the European Union. Over the decades, the Polish community in Great Britain has managed to set up numerous veterans’ and social organisations, Polish schools, it also built churches in order to preserve Polish culture abroad.
Pokazane zostało zaangażowanie brytyjskiej Polonii w kontekście historii Polski, które realizowano poprzez organizowanie protestów antykomunistycznych,  prowadzenie różnego rodzaju akcji informujących o sytuacji w Polsce, organizowanie pomocy materialnej, wspieranie Polski w momencie transformacji ustrojowej, wspieranie przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Na przestrzeni dekad Polonia w Wielkiej Brytanii zdołała powołać liczne organizacje kombatanckie i społeczne, polskie szkoły, budować kościoły w celu zachowania polskiej kultury na obczyźnie.

‘Great Britain, Great Expectations’: The Representation of Polish Migration to Great Britain in Londyńczycy/LondonersFollowing the 2004 expansion of the European Union (EU), Polish migrant workers began arriving in the United Kingdom on an unprecedented scale. Londoners (Londyńczycy, 2008-9) was a response to this. Exploring the lives of Polish migrants in London, the series became an instant success on Polish television, regularly attracting around four million viewers. This article explores how Londoners represents Britishness and Polishness to its target Polish audience. It will argue that the series negotiates questions of Polish national identity, which over the past 20 years has been undergoing fundamental redefinition as a result of the ending of the Cold War and Poland’s accession to the EU.

Opis:
The Polish press in exile’s interest in Norwegian affairs began when Germany attacked Denmark and Norway in April 1940, at which time Polish soldiers were sent to Narvik to participate in the Allies’ defence of the country. The battle of Narvik became a symbol of Polish-Norwegian solidarity and reactivated existing Polish traditions of identifying themselves with those fighting “for our freedom and yours” For a long time Norway was associated in Polish minds with the expedition to Narvik. The subject was frequently raised in the emigre Polish press and in separate publications during the course of the War. This interest in Norway was enhanced by a community spirit and a shared political aim: the defeat o f Germany and the liberation of the homeland. Therefore Polish journalists recorded all kinds of Norwegian propaganda in Britain, important statements made by the King, Haakon VII, and by the government in exile. Polish commentators also presented Norway as a victim of German aggression. Numerous articles described the conditions of every day life under German occupation; issues related to food shortages, the lack of basic articles as clothes and fuel were all repeatedly exposed. From the end of 1941 this media coverage presented its readers with a picture of a nation that was actively resisting occupation. The difficult question of Vidkun Quisling’s collaboration with the Germans was, however, dealt with separately by Polish publicists.

Niniejszy referat omawia praktykę stosowania destruktu asfaltowego w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Recycling is becoming part of the production process in many industries and the asphalt sector is no exception. The advantages of reprocessing reclaimed asphalt are not just economic in an increasingly price sensitive market, the process also preserves a valuable natural resources. Several million tonnes of recycled bituminous bound material is produced annually in the UK and it was identified as a valuable resource supplementing production of road construction materials. This paper outlines a current practice of recycling and reusing of asphalt planings in the United Kingdom.

Between 1933 and 1939 many British organisations, as well as individuals, who witnessed the rise of Nazi Germany, the implementation of anti-Jewish laws, and growing anti-Semitism, decided to take action. There were numerous attempts aimed at supporting Jews living in the Third Reich, either by providing them with money or by helping them emigrate. This article describes two largest such programmes, i.e. the Kindertransports, and an unnamed action focused on intellectuals, scientists, and artists. The article first discusses the character of both, and then proceeds to explore the question of the character of the migrations presented, as well as the differences between migration and refuge seeking. It concludes with the issue of post-war mobility of the participants of both programmes.

Opis:
The present article is an attempt to outline a picture of the Polish immigration in Great Britain after the Second World War. The material used has been based on the available English publications and the author’s private conversations and observations made during his several months stay in the Polish communities in England. This work has been written as part of the broader sociological investigations which are to be carried out in the forthcoming years. The contents of the article is a description and analysis of the state of the Polish population in Great Britain, forms of their organizational, social, cultural and religious life as well as the forms of their assimilation and integration with British society. Thus, the following issues have been examined: the beginning of the Polish settlement in Great Britain, the post-war movements of the immigration, the „geography” of their settlement, the ways the Poles joined in the social and industrial life of their new country, and the forms of their activities aiming at maintaining their consciousness of belonging to the Polish nation and culture. These forms cover the work of social, political, cultural and religious organizations, the sphere of journalism, literature and scientific research. Their main objective is the youngest generation which is particularly exposed to the process of denationalization. An important role is played here by the Church since its religious activities are closely connected with nationally oriented ones. Thus, the author presents the assets of. the Polish Church in Great Britain and the forms of its participation in the whole socio-cultural life of the immigrants. Finally, on the basis of the opinions of some leading immigrant activists the author tries to present the existing direction of assimilation and denationalization of the youngest generation which is exposed to numerous influences of integration with the society and culture of the country they consider their homeland. With respect to this problem some suggestions concerning modification of educational activities of the Polish Sunday schools and youth organizations have been put forward.

Opis:
The paper discusses educational strategies of Polish migrant mothers parenting in the United Kingdom. The main argument concerns a growing need for examining the diversity and heterogeneity of the Polish migrant parents, particularly evident in the educational choices they make for children growing up abroad. The findings stem from a doctoral research project, supplemented by the data from the Polish schooling in UK – tradition and modernity study. Qualitative methodological approaches of both projects relied on conducting interviews. The topic of educational choices is anchored in the discussion of three models of motherhood, which seemingly distinguish the approaches to Polish supplementary schooling, as well as highlight inherent differences and conflicts within the views pertinent to local (English or Welsh) schooling that the parents share. The focus is placed on parental reasons for children’s participation in Polish education, further elaborating on the motivations of the parents who do not take up this form of learning. The paper pinpoints a transnational character of the educational choices, linking them to the debates on social and educational capital of migrants. Finally, it puts forward a claim that there is a tendency among Polish parents to somewhat overburden their children with multiple educational pathways.

Leaving the UE by the UK has brought a number of consequences for bilateral Polish-British police and justice cooperation. The subject of the article was to present legal regulations, which provide the basis for international cooperation for British law enforcement agencies. The author analyzed and then evaluated the effectiveness of instruments of mutual cooperation. The articles focuses also on the assessment of Brexit consequences and its possible impact on the Polish-British police cooperation. It is worth emphasising that cross-border law enforcement cooperation - which includes police, customs, secret services and other law enforcement agencies, mainly concerns the most serious threats such as terrorism, organised crime, human traffi cking, money laundering, drug traffi cking or cybercrime. The article shows that the most unfavourable changes result from dropping the Schengen acquis by the United Kingdom - is disconnection from the second generation Schengen Information System. The article includes also information about The Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which has retained a number of important mechanisms for effective police cooperation between EU Member States and the United Kingdom. But although, as mentioned in the article, the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom provides upgrades of the tools of police and judicial cooperation, it is a matter of practise to verify these as sufficient.

Opis:
The system of the Polish education in Great Britain is closely connected with the character of the Polish emigration of war. All transformations that the Poles in Great Britain had undergone, simultaneously changed the main aims of the Polish education. Hence, two phases of the Polish education can be distinguished: the period of the military emigration of war (1940-1947);2. the period of the intensive adaptation with the British society (since 1947). In the first period the education of Poles was under the authority of the Polish Government-in-Exile. It was to offer education for the soldiers as well as to work out the system of education in post-war Poland. After the Polish Army had been demobilized, the responsibility for the education of Poles was taken over by the Interim Treasury Committee for Polish Questions (1945-1947) and then by the Committee far the Education of Poles in Great Britain (1947-1954). Both institutions tended to enable the Poles to obtain education from the British authorities. This intensive process of adaptation threatened with the danger of complete assimilation with the British society. However, the Polish political emigrants, thanks to their deep national awareness, understood the necessity and value of keeping up their national character. They contributed a lot to organizing the Polish national education in Great Britain based on free, voluntary work of Polish teachers, priests and social organizations. In 1980, there were 68 Polish Saturday schools, two grammar schools and the Polish University-in-Exile. This whole system depends largely on a few Polish educational organizations. The history of the Polish education in Great Britain shows great efforts of the Polish ethnic group in order to maintain the values of the Polish culture. Methods of teaching, however, are far from being ideal. If the Polish system of education is to survive and serve future generations, the process of teaching has to be enriched by the idea of biculturalism.

Opis:
Basically the article is devoted to an analysis of tile origin, aims, social role, and various problems of the children s and youth s periodicals published in Great Britain in the last 40 years. There are mere than' a cozen of them. The author concludes that the Scout Movement and the periodicals published by in have had the greatest influence on the education of the Polish youth in Great Britain. Their target was to hand down Polish culture to the succesive generations of emigrants. The periodicals devoted to the teaching in Saturday schools, which have also been published for the last 40 years, have had the same aim. Besides, scout and school periodicals also other children s, youth s and students periodicals have been published in that period. These latter ones have played an important role although they had constant financial problems. However, the fact that they have been published for such a long time, despite many difficulties, proves that there was a greet need for such publications. The editorial staffs of the existing periodicals are planning a further perfecting of them.
