    Development of Education for Indigenous Minorities in Alaska The article deals with the issue of the relation between education and processes of the development of ethnic identity of indigenous minorities in Alaska. Particular emphasis was placed on reconstructing the educational practices and policy that is being implemented for indigenous minorities within the school system (especially assimilation, discrimination and revitalisation of ethnic identity). An attempt was made at examining the relationship between schooling, socialisation, language policy, and the development of aboriginal minorities in Alaska.

    The article include the consideration of social functions of higher education for indigenous minorities living in the Arctic. Particular emphasis was placed on reconstructing educational practices and the language policy that is implemented toward indigenous minorities in Alaska, Canadian Arctic, Greenland, northern regions of Scandinavia and Northern Russia. An attempt was made at examining the relationship between higher education, language policy, and the development of ethnic identity.

    Artykuł stanowi analizę wybranych koncepcji teoretycznych i rozwiązań praktycznych funkcjonowania edukacji dwujęzycznej. Pojęcie dwujęzyczności analizowane jest z perspektywy odmienności zastosowań edukacji bilingwalnej. Głównym punktem odniesienia są rozważania odnoszące się do polityki oświatowej państw względem mniejszości etnicznych i kulturowych - z perspektywy asymilacji i rewitalizacji ich języków.
    The article deals with the issue of the relation between education, educational policy and the processes of the development of ethnic identity. Particular emphasis was placed on reconstructing educational practices and the language policy that is implemented toward minorities in the contexts of bilingual edu-cation. An attempt was made at examining the relationship between language policy, schooling, and development of ethnic identity of ethnic and cultural minorities, especially processes of assimilation and revitalization of languages.

    The history of development and modern forms of functioning of education for indigenous minorities in Alaska reveal trends which appeared in other areas of the Arctic. The systematic activity of education, along with the influence of other state institutions (military, offices), and also the often destructive influence of religious organizations contributed to irreversible changes in the ethnic awareness of indigenous communities. They have resulted in permanent changes in the ethnic identity of peoples inhabiting the Arctic for thousands of years. Initially, education was used by churches in the process of Christianization. Then, education was used to indoctrinate state ideologies (in particular national ones). And although currently various ethnic and national groups in the areas of the High North have opportunities in the sphere of using their own language and protecting their identity, the criteria for social promotion through the education system have remained unchanged. As a consequence, even representatives of large ethnic groups are determined – in their education and life choices. Nowadays, the drama of indigenous minorities living in Alaska and other minorities in the polar regions continues, and we cannot expect it to end in a “constructive” manner. The dilemma of “preserving identity” in the conditions of a multi-ethnic society does not lose its focus. Individuals from indigenous communities usually have to choose between achieving educational and socio-professional success (as part of the dominant majority system) and the attachment to their traditional culture.

    The article is an analysis of the selective function of education in South Africa during the apartheid period (1948–1994). It contains considerations regarding racial segregation practices and the role of education in reconstructing social diversity in South African education. The analyzes are based on theoretical concepts of social closure. They refer to selection practices and discrimination phenomena present in the consecutive stages of the development of the education system in South Africa.
    Artykuł stanowi analizę selekcyjnej funkcji szkolnictwa w Republice Południowej Afryki w okresie apartheidu (1948–1994). Zawarto w nim rozważania dotyczące praktyk segregacji rasowej i roli szkolnictwa w odtwarzaniu zróżnicowania społecznego w południowoafrykańskiej edukacji. Analizy osadzone są w teoretycznych koncepcjach zamknięcia społecznego. Odnoszą się one do praktyk selekcyjnych oraz zjawisk dyskryminacji obecnych w kolejnych etapach rozwoju systemu edukacji w RPA.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie polityki edukacyjnej wobec mniejszości Saami, zamieszkującej od tysięcy lat północną część Skandynawii. Główny nacisk położony jest na relacje pomiędzy tożsamością, kulturą i edukacją. Podjęto również próbę nakreślenia historycznych i współczesnych podejść do problemu mniejszości w edukacji - w kontekście politycznym. Autor dostrzega, iż nie ma prostych odpowiedzi i rozwiązań wobec problemu tradycyjnych mniejszości we współczesnej rzeczywistości — w szczególności w aspekcie wyboru pomiędzy tradycyjnymi wartościami i tożsamością a sposobami funkcjonowania w nowoczesnym społeczeństwie.
