Opis:
The issues related to the emission of atmospheric pollutants during the provision of energy supply services and the circulation of household waste in settlements are considered. The ways of air pollution by toxic compounds and the formation of greenhouse gases with existing methods of waste heat treatment are analyzed. The issues of reducing the content of toxic emissions in combustion products are studied on the basis of a numerical experiment by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The combustion processes in the power boiler TP-14A (E 220/100) are considered and adequate boundary conditions for the processes of aerodynamics, heat transfer and combustion of gas fuel are determined. The temperature, velocity and concentration fields in the furnace of the investigated boiler have been determined. According to the results of the calculations performed, the formation of chemical underburning and nitrogen oxides is predicted.

The aim of this study was the reinterpretation of the published and unpublished Late-Pleistocene and Holocene pollen and diatom diagrams of deposits from the sedimentary basins of the Southern Baltic Sea and the correlation of the distinguished biostratigraphic units with lithological parameters, seismostratigraphic units. Chronostratigraphic subdivision of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene was also made. To facilitate the correlation and reinterpretation of the results of biostratigraphic (palynological and diatom) analyses, new unified and simplified diagrams were drawn using the POLPAL software. Such diagrams were constructed for all the sites under comparison, even for those of no numerical data. In such cases, the published diagrams were scanned and their percentage values were the basis for new diagrams. A review and reinterpretation of biostratigraphic data show an almost complete lack of palynological documentation and diatom diagrams for the Late Pleistocene period and poor documentation for the Early Holocene. Middle and Late Holocene Baltic muds have the best biostratigraphic documentation and radiocarbon dating, which greatly facilitates their location on the geological time scale. Among the Southern Baltic postglacial sediments three lithostratigraphic units were identified. They differ in their lithological features reflecting the conditions prevalent in the sedimentary basin during deposition. It should be noted that these units meet no formal criteria for distinguishing lithostratigraphic units. Similarly, within the Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments of Southern Baltic deep-water basins, three main seismostratigraphic complexes have been identified. The integrated analysis of seismoacoustic profiles, lithological profiles of cores and reinterpretated biostratigraphic data allow a correlation of the bio-, litho- and seismostratigraphic units with chronostratigraphic units and Baltic evolutionary phases.

Opis:
This study is dealing with the difference of radiation chemical yields of single and double strand breaks induced in plasmid DNA by photons inside and outside of the soft X-ray water window, i.e., in the wavelength range from 2.28 nm to 4.88 nm. Photons were generated by various plasma sources providing nanosecond and sub-nanosecond pulses of extreme ultraviolet, soft X-ray and X-ray radiation. DNA strand breaks were determined by agarose gel electrophoresis. Higher radiation chemical yields of both single and double strand breaks were found using picosecond and nanosecond sources of extreme ultraviolet and X-ray radiation.

Opis:
The adsorption of horse spleen ferritin on gold surface is studied with null ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy. The high sensitivity and in situ advantage of ellipsometry make it very attractive for studies of ultrathin biomolecular layers. The influence of pH and protein concentration in solution on the adsorption kinetics was interpreted using ex situ scanning electron microscopy shots and computer modeling of the system "prism-gold film-adsorbed layer-solution". It seems that the first fast stage comprises nucleation process occurring at active sites and the following slow multistage process of a protein film growth. The data about adsorption kinetics of protein and the structure of the adsorbate layers obtained in this study enable understanding of such processes in real biological system, e.g. the protein adsorption on blood vessels and tissues in pathological processes.

Badanie efektywności funduszy inwestycyjnych jest zjawiskiem dość często obserwowanym. Jednak tego typu analizy w zdecydowanej większości dotyczą funduszy akcji czy obligacji. Wydaje się, że fundusze nieruchomościowe z uwagi na to, że są stosunkowo młodym produktem na polskim rynku finansowym oraz z powodu diametralnie innego celu inwestycji powinny być przedmiotem szerokich badań. Celem prezentowanego opracowania było zbadanie efektywności wybranych funduszy inwestycyjnych lokujących swoje aktywa na polskim rynku nieruchomości w latach 2014–2016. W trakcie badań empirycznych przeanalizowano cztery wybrane fundusze inwestycyjne za pomocą relatywnych oraz bezwzględnych miar efektywności. Wyniki analizy ukazały, że większość funduszy inwestycyjnych działających na rynku nieruchomości osiągały słabe rezultaty, co może wynikać z braku umiejętności i wiedzy zarządzającego funduszem oraz złej polityki inwestycyjnej.
The examination of the effectiveness of investment funds is a frequently observed phenomenon. However, such analyses largely concern stock and bond funds. It appears that due to their relatively young age as products on the Polish financial market and the radically different objective of investment real estate funds should be subject to extensive research. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the effectiveness of selected investment funds with assets in the Polish real estate market in 2014–2016. Throughout the course of empirical research four selected investment funds were examined using relative and absolute measurements of effectiveness. Analysis of data showed that the majority of investment funds operating on the real estate market actually achieved poor results. This may be due to a lack of prior knowledge and expertise of manager presiding over the fund, but also due to bad investment policies.

We performed small angle X-ray scattering and rheological experiments in order to analyze the aggregation and denaturation processes of hen egg white lysozyme initiated by the presence of ethanol molecule. At low ethanol concentrations (below 60% (v/v)) we did not observe any change of the radius of gyration of lysozyme and no drastic changes in viscosity of the protein solution. With the increase in ethanol concentration up to the final concentration of 85% (v/v) the viscosity of protein solution dramatically increased. For high ethanol concentration a pseudoplastic behavior of lysozyme solution was observed, indicating a process of aggregation and reorientation of the protein molecules. Similar effects were observed in small angle X-ray scattering experiments. We assume that the analysis of the aggregation processes of the hen egg white lysozyme could contribute to our understanding of the mechanism of lysozyme amyloid formation.

The way of functioning of commercial banks remained unchanged over the years – from the institutions involved in the distribution of financial products and services turned into organizations aspiring to the title of socially responsible entities. This means that its activities include the interests of many groups, such as customers, employees, shareholders, local communities and contractors. The result is those banks that want to be recognized as socially responsible, take numerous initiatives in areas not related to the sale, such as protection of the environment, voluntary or society. The directions of banks’ activity are determined by the key values, formulated in the mission, which defines the core of the organization and lets them stand out from the competitors. Institutions socially responsible also in this area should take into account the concept of CSR by pointing to various interest groups and taking various forms of activity. The aim of the publication is to analyse the content of the missions of selected commercial banks from the perspective of the various levels of responsibility and groups of interest. The article hypothesized that not all of the analysed commercial banks include in their missions the idea of corporate social responsibility, and those that do are limited to specific areas of action and specific stakeholder groups. The analysis was conducted on the basis of the contents available on the websites of the 10 largest financial institutions in Poland in terms of assets.

The strain relaxation kinetics of ZnTe/CdTe and CdTe/ZnTe heterostructures grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy are studied by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The observed critical layer thickness is 5 monolayers for ZnTe/CdTe and less than 1 monolayer for CdTe/ZnTe. The relaxation is anisotropic. Dislocation core parameters and relaxation rate constants were determined using a kinetic model and assuming strain-dependent activation energy of dislocation movement.
