Opis:
Reinvestigations of the Li2O–Al2O3 system focused on the synthesis and properties of LiAlO2 and Li3AlO3 phases have been performed with the help of XRD and IR measuring techniques and Li2CO3, LiOH.H2O, Al2O3-sl., α-Al2O3, Al(NO3)3.9H2O and boehmite as reactants. Results of investigations have shown the formation of α-, β-, and γ- polymorphs of LiAlO2. It was found that only the use of LiOH.H2O as a reactant yields to β-LiAlO2 as a reaction product. On the other hand, it was proved that Li3AlO3 does not form in the Li2O–Al2O3 system. A new method for the synthesis of α-LiAlO2 was developed, consisting in grinding the mixture of Li2CO3 and Al(NO3)3.9H2O and heating the obtained paste at the temperature range of 400–600°C. The IR spectroscopy was used to characterize obtained phases.

Opis:
Aims: The modern scientific publishing system suffers from many problems, amongst which one of the most important  is the pressure to publish positive results. A potentially simple way to mitigate publication bias are reviews of manuscript, prior to the data collection and analyses, as well as results presentation and discussion (i.e. Registered Reports). Methods: To test this prediction we conducted a quasi-experiment: two groups of students (n=38), as a part of their academic classes, were asked to design and conduct research projects. They were divided in two groups – Registered Reports- and control group. In both groups students have been encouraged to publish their papers in a local scientific journal. Results: Analyses revealed significant differences in p levels between groups, suggesting more reliable scores for Registered Reports group. Conclusions: Our study partially confirmed the  stated hypothesis and suggested, that registered reports might mitigate publication bias. Future recommendations are advised.

Opis:
The use of probiotics has become a mainstream application in pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and cleaning technologies. Probiotic microorganisms seem to be a remedy for the problem of undesired, persistent microbiological contamination or uncontrolled biofilm formation in the automatic household equipments, dedicated to the undirect contact with food. We propose the mixture of commonly widespread and bio-safe environmental probiotic Bacillus sp. strains as a component of an improved cleaning product for automatic dishwashers. Our design of probiotic-improved cleaning product combines the chemical detergent formula and probiotic Bacillus sp. preparation in two separate pockets of self-soluble cleaning capsule. To pinpoint the validity of an improved probiotic-based cleaning product design, we present a case study of the microflora from the chosen localizations of an old household dishwasher. The swab collecting, followed by bacterial cultivation and MALDI-TOF identification revealed Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas oleovorans forming the major inner microflora of an old household dishwasher, where a commonly available dishwashing products were used. We applied probiotic Bacillus sp. improved cleaning product to a model dishwasher in a conventional cleaning cycle and conducted the before-after trial to identify the inner microflora in chosen localizations. Using standard microbiological Gram-staining method with microscopic observation, followed by MALDI-TOF identification we confirmed, that Bacillus sp. replaced Acinetobacter sp., residing formerly model dishwasher filter and water drain. Conducted experiments have shown the potential for use of the chosen probiotic Bacillus sp. strains mixture as an addition for encapsulated formula of cleaning product, to provide microbiologically safe and controllable conditions during the conventional dishwasher cleaning cycle.

The authors start with describing the phenomenon of sea piracy, which has historically been present since the beginning of shipping. They also try to distinguish it from the phenomenon of terrorism and the armed seizure of ship, and analyse the Somali piracy by defining its character and presenting its repercussions in international scene. Subsequently, the authors locate the phe-nomenon of piracy in the Polish law context, and deliver their interpretation of the crime of taking control over the sea vessel in the light of the art. 166 of the Polish Penal Code.

Opis:
There is an increasing interest in surfactants that comprise a linkage that breaks down in a controlled way. The most known examples of the cleavage mechanism include acid or alkaline hydrolysis, UV irradiation, enzymatic or heat decomposition. For practical reasons, the labile grouping can be inserted between the hydrophobic tail of the surfactant and the polar head group. Chemically and/or enzymatically induced cleavage of this labile bond would cause the separation of the polar part and the hydrophobic tail and, consequently, change of surface activity, an event usually referred to as the primary degradation of the surfactant. Dicephalic labile cationic surfactants belong to the class of surface active compounds with many potential applications often associated with their biological activity for a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi, or algae. Thus, they can be used in disinfecting agents or for protecting against the occurrence of these microorganisms. They adsorb well on negatively charged surfaces, which can be used in the treatment of fabrics. Due to excellent antistatic properties, they can be used for the final rinsing of fabrics, especially synthetic ones. In flotation processes, they can act as collectors, and in catalysis, they can be used as phase transfer catalysts or templates for zeolite synthesis. We present the surface quasi-two-dimensional electrolyte (STDE) model as a universal model for the description of ionic surfactants’ adsorption at fluid interfaces that explicitly considers the electric double formation upon surfactant adsorption. The model was adapted to describe phenomena occurring for adsorption of dicephalic surfactants as counterion specificity or formation of surfactant ioncounterion associates. As an example, we applied the model to explain the mechanism of adsorption at water/air interface of novel dicephalic cationic surfactants, N,N-bis[3,3′-(trimethylammonio)propyl]alkylamide dibromides and N,N-bis[3,3′-(trimethylammonio)propyl]alkylamide dimethylsulfates, both belonging to the class of chemodegradable surfactants having amide bond between two quaternary amine cationic groups and a single hydrophobic tail. Additionally, we used the same model to describe adsorption isotherms of N,N-bis[3,3- (dimethylamine)propyl]alkylamide dichlorides, having as two hydrophilic groups tertiary amines, which charge is pH-dependent. Application of the STDE model allowed an excellent description of experimental adsorption isotherm of dicephalic cationic surfactants and explained the specific features connected with the presence of multicharged headgroup.
