Opis:
In this paper, an interweaving of the concepts of metamorphosis, developed by Ulrich Beck, and the scientific thinking style of Ludwik Fleck is suggested. Due to our own relevant preliminary work, it seems obvious to bring these two concepts together for the purpose of a theoretical connection useful for linguistics, especially for discourse linguistics. After a short introduction (1) and a review of the state of research on Fleck’s theory of cognition (2), the core term “metamorphosis” is semantically determined (3), and comments are made on the relevance of the concept. This is followed by an analysis of Beck’s The Metamorphosis of the World, which focuses on the concept of metamorphosis as he sees it (4). Here, the linguistic relevance of the concept is emphasized, which Beck mentions explicitly. This is followed by a section on Ludwik Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact (5.). Here, comments are made on Fleck’s thinking style and on the thinking collective. On this basis, the synthesis of Beck’s and Fleck’s ideas is sought (6.), a directed perception with a view to social metamorphoses. This can best be done linguistically using the discourse-linguistic multi-layer analysis (DIMEAN), as proposed by Spitzmüller/Warnke. DIMEAN is presented accordingly, and subsequently modified for the analysis of linguistic manifestations of metamorphosis (6.1). Using the example of various linguistic metamorphosis phenomena from the discourse around the German federal elections of 2017–2018, the applicability of the combination of Beck’s and Fleck’s ideas is then tested (6.2). The article concludes with a summary and perspectives for further research (7).

Opis:
The debate between Ludwik Fleck (microbiologist and philosopher of science) and Tadeusz Bilikiewicz (historian and philosopher of medicine) took place shortly before the outbreak of World War II and remained virtually unnoticed until 1978. A wider recognition of their exchange was possible only after the English and German translations appeared. Basically, the polemics concerned understanding of the concept of style and influence that the environment exerted on scientific activity and its products. The polemic started with the review of Bilikiewicz’s book Die Embryologie im Zeitalter des Barock und des Rokoko (1932) where the historical account of the development of embryology in the early and late Baroque period was interwoven with bold sociological remarks. The commentators of the debate were quick to notice that the claims made by Fleck at that time were crucial for understanding of his position, especially because they let to interpret his views in a non-relativist way. While the importance of the controversy was univocally acknowledged, its assessment so far has been defective for two reasons. First, for decades the views of Bilikiewicz were known only from the short and rather critical presentation given by Fleck and this put their discussion into an inadequate perspective. Second, for over 40 years it remained a complete puzzle what prompted their exchange of views. This paper closes these gaps. Thus, on the one hand, I reconstruct the central issue of the disputation between Fleck and Bilikiewicz and situate it within the context of Bilikiewicz’s views. On the other hand – and this is more important – I try to explain the origin of their debate by quoting some recently discovered and unpublished archival materials. A review of their correspondence gives me an opportunity to advance some hypotheses about the aims and hopes connected with their project but also possible reasons for its failure.

Opis:
In his ‘Philosophical Investigations’, Wittgenstein declares that he is neither creating a theory nor explaining anything: he is merely describing the ways of using words and sentences, thus trying to make philosophical problems disappear. In fact, however, he proposes a theory of the nature of language games and their functions, even though - because of the above declaration - he expresses it in a fragmentary and unclear way. After 1946, his views underwent significant transformations: he abandoned the philosophy of mathematics for the philosophy of psychology. And in the last months of his life, in the notes published posthumously as On Certainty, he expressed a number of epistemological claims that explain our cognitive attitudes. He did not manage to finish this work. We have to do it for him, and crucial supplements are provided - as this paper argues - by Ludwik Fleck’s theory of thought collectives and thought styles.
