Opis:
This article offers a reflection on the current state of affairs regarding sexuality studies in general and the representation of non-heterosexual women in particular in contemporary academia and feminisms. As a lesbian scholar based in Poland, I am attempting to establish a separate lesbian-studies discourse in the Polish academia on the one hand, and encourage a great dose of interdisciplinarity in moving towards re-adjusted and re-defined lesbian feminisms on the other. Having defended my doctoral dissertation, I am going to re-visit and summarise one of its parts, namely the question of inadequacies of contemporary gender studies. Although the overall character of my activity can be situated within the sociology of sexuality, I tend to conceptualise the problems in question through the prism of sociology of knowledge and human geography, and especially the branches of feminist geography and geographies of sexualities. Altogether, I am going to briefly look into several contemporary gender and/or women’s studies programmes in Poland in order to show both their incapacity to deal with female sexuality and, as a consequence, their erasure of lesbianity. Needless to say, the brief analysis herein is merely the start of the discussion as it offers only a sample of exploratory efforts with regard to the question of academic feminisms, but it is one that reveals some alarming tendencies.

Opis:
The United States breast cancer movement helped to transform breast cancer’s social and medical landscape domestically and, in some ways, internationally. However, differences in gender identities, power relations, and the role of feminism(s) cross-culturally also shaped breast cancer advocacy itself. After giving a brief introduction to the socio-historical context of the U.S. and Polish breast cancer movements, this article illuminates some of the linkages and divergences between the United States and Poland to demonstrate the role of gender and power in social movements that concentrate exclusively on women’s (health) issues, namely breast cancer. This comparison of social phenomena from two countries illuminates the impact of cultural patterns on models of activism as they relate to feminism and traditional gender roles.

Opis:
The article offers a reflection on the utility of postcolonial studies and transnational feminism for the analysis of women’s post-socialist experiences, with a special emphasis on Croatian academic and social space. After general considerations about the epistemological profile and etico-political agenda of transnational feminism – as illustrated by the results of the feminist seminar in Dubrovnik (2007–2015) – the author presents three theoretically most challenging feminist authors: Madina Tlostanova, Biljana Kašić and Marina Gržinić. Each of them in its own way demonstrates that theoretical voices from the “global South” are the most productive tool to oppose academic “global feminism” and to inspire “women’s struggles for sociopolitical justice, especially in colonial and neocolonial contexts” (Swarr, Nagar 2010: 4). The radical call for the decolonization of gender, human being and knowledge (Tlostanova 2013), the appreciation of woman’s public voices and counter-discourses (Kašić), and the critique of racialization in the production of knowledge (Gržinić 2015) are intertwined and linked to the final thesis about the importance of distinguishing the biopolitical form of women’s memory vs. the necropolitical formation of institutionalized history in post-socialist context.

Opis:
In 1982, Michelle Cliff (1946-2016) published "Object into Subject: Some Thoughts on the Work of Black Women Artists" in the fifteenth issue of Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics dedicated to racism. Her article examines the construction of racist and sexist imaginations in the United States, as well as writings and artworks by Black women that deconstruct these mythologies through self-definition. In what ways does Cliff's article bring to light the relationship between art and politics from a feminist perspective within the context of its publication? Drawing primarily on Cliff's text, Black feminist thought and activism, research on Black women's history, exhibitions, and analyses of artworks, I explore the links between art, visual and material culture, historiography, and feminisms. My reading of this text leads me to question the relationship between representations and mythologies, as well as the role of fiction in recovering history. Finally, I put into perspective the work of Betye Saar, and particularly the assemblage The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1972) reproduced in Cliff’s article.

The #Elenão movement, organized the largest manifestations of a feminist nature that occurred in the Brazilian history, making evident the "popularization" of feminism in different layers of Brazilian society. This movement, for many, was considered as a kind of thermometer for what would be the coming years of social movements in our country. But what was seen in the following years was a massive decrease in street protests, generating an impression of a demobilization on the part of social movements, which was further accentuated by COVID-19. Far beyond a collective impression of demobilization of social movements in our country and a lack of resistance movements against the government of Jair Bolsonaro, what we perceive is that many movements continued with their struggles, putting their issues on the agenda and bringing to the discussion in our society the consequences caused by the pandemic.
