Opis:: The European transport policy undertakes to enhance sustainability in transport in order to boost economic activities in the whole EU. The reduction of pollutant emissions and a better balance among modes of transportation to cut road congestion are the pillars of the above policy. These factors are encouraging public and private stakeholders to use the freight maritime alternative more extensively. Short sea shipping is considered the quickest way to reach sustainability. Another advantage of ships over trucks and trains is that vessels consume less fuel as a result of the relatively low speeds at which they travel. However, increasingly faster ships are in a position to compete with trucks, but the former’s greater power demand and consumption rate result in higher pollutant emission levels which, in turn, lead to the loss of their environmental advantage over road transport. This problem is analyzed below.

Opis:: This paper presents results of the numerical evaluation of the fast container ship's wave pattern, based on the RANSE (Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes Equations) method with dynamic trim and sinkage taken into account. Evaluating the ship's running attitude is based on coupling the flow solver with solving the motion equations for the ship hull. The results are presented for four speed values and contain: ship's running attitude (defined by changes of ship draught and trim angle), wave contours and wave profiles in chosen planes. The computed ship's running attitude and wave profiles are compared with the experimental results.

Opis:: Power requirement for ship's movement depends on their size (water displacement) and sailing speed. The problem is especially important for fast ships, because the speed of movement is generating significant high power requirement, while limited displacement, diminishing a drag quantity from one hand, is a reason of limited draft and consequently limited capacity of a hull from the other. Above facts have strong influence at a number, type, power and size of main engines and propellers. Fast ships are designed for reaching maximum speed, but majority of exploitation time, are cruising at lower speed, called partial speed. That exploitation profile requires stopping of some engines or braking of propellers. Not driven propellers are dragged behind the hull, and work at a turbine mode, giving a torque at a propulsion shaft and creates a negative thrust what means the additional drag. The additional drag of not driven propellers must be calculated during the propulsion design stage, and analysis of speed value during different variants of the ship's movement . Torque values and thrusts can be evaluated basing on the universal hydrodynamic characteristics of propellers. the method and example of calculation of the drag created by free-rotating and stopped propellers of the exemplary propulsion set are presented in the paper.

The paper contains propositions of design and decisive criteria to be applied for selection of the fast cargo inland ships, i.e. operating at supercritical speed on determined transition depth of water way. Well-founded solutions (technical-economical) may become an alternative for transportation means development and intensification of inland waterway transportation service, particularly related to general cargoes.

Na przykładzie wspomnianej akcji zaproponowano zmiany w wyposażeniu łodzi, w celu ułatwienia pracy ratowników morskich oraz poprawy bezpieczeństwa osób poszkodowanych.
The article analyzes the fast rescue boat equipment required in the fifth chapter of the LSA Code for suitability in rescue operations on the basis of the rescue action conducted by Maritime Search and Rescue Service. On the example of the mentioned action, the changes in the boat equipment were proposed in order to facilitate work of rescuers and improve safety of the victims.
