Opis:
The encyclical makes an analysis of the situation of the contemporary culture in which a crisis of the truth about man has occurred as well as a crisis of the meaning of human life that is connected with it. The deformities are first of all concerned with recognising the truth about God and the relations between Him and man. Hence the aim of the encyclical is to point out that „man cannot be understood without God”, and what is more, „man cannot be understood without Christ”. The problem of learning about God then has a clearly anthropological context in the encyclical. It points to two complementary ways to learn about God as the ultimate source of existence and of the Supreme Good that makes human life meaningful:1) the way of reason, through learning about the existing reality and explaining it (philosophy)2) the way of faith, that is, the way of the reason thinking while believing that God's word is true; in it God shows truths about Himself and about man that exceed man's cognitive abilities. Hence full cognition of the truth about God and about man as significantly connected with Him requires two kinds of cognition. Fides et ratio expresses this in a simple way: „man is a creature in quest of the truth”, he is „a philosopher by nature” and one „whose life is based on faith”. Hence man can „on the wings of reason and faith rise to contemplating the truth”. Both these ways are ways of the truth concerning the existing reality; be it natural or supernatural. When a man recognises and lives through them both they can show him the ultimate meaning of life.

Opis:
The paper an analytical-interpretative commentary on several excerpts from I. Kant. The first one with an example of a doctor who thinks he knows his patient's illness deals with the concept of pragmatic faith. The author seeks to explicate this concept by giving three interpretations of Kantian example. In a further part of the paper the internal lie is defined as a sin which may fall part of any „believers not careful enough” of the titular faith. The first example is this sin is an internal profession of faith in God („just in case”) without actual participation in it. The second example is a false worship to the Creator, the one that is motivated by fear or punishment. When interpreting these examples, the author refers to the Kantian distinction between homo noumenon (moral being) and homo phaenomenon (physical being). This distinction is related to the interdiction of using homo phaenomenon only as a means (an instrument to speak).

The issues from the domain of the philosophy of nature such as non-necessity of beings, finality in nature, the beginning of the universe, life, human being; and causality in nature call for the existence of a transcendent reality or the absolute being – God. God is a factor which makes the material reality rational. The problem of the existence of God and His relation to the material world is discussed in the philosophy of God. Therefore the philosophy of God is the fulfilment of the philosophy of nature. On the other hand the philosophy of nature can provide some arguments for the existence of God. In this way the philosophy of nature and the philosophy of God are complementary to each another.

Opis:
Catechesis and liturgy enable the Church to fulfill its saving mission awarded by the Christ. Preaching the word is to lead to the celebration of liturgy. The heart of the catechesis and faith of those who receive the message of salvation is the mystery of the Christ celebrated in liturgy. As catechesis is essential to gain understanding and ultimate experience of liturgy, a catechesis that supports and translates liturgical values into daily life is indispensable. Catechesis should relate to liturgical experience, consolidate its values, point to the richness of life renewed in Christ and propose ways of attaining sainthood in daily work. The characteristic element of liturgy is the language of celebration, which imparts significance to the celebration in the process of transmission of faith. Liturgy also uses symbolic language, which is an indispensable way of expressing and sharing religious experience. Symbols can help catechesis to resist the temptation of teaching only, because they bring teaching closer to daily life and add necessary dynamism to catechesis.

Opis:
During the nineteenth century Charles Darwin introduced his theory of evolution by natural selection. His goal was to show that life was not the result of divine intervention, but the work of blind naturalistic processes. Darwin claimed to have arrived at this truth by working strictly with the facts apart from any preconceived ideas, and this is exactly how most people today perceive Darwinism. Dissenters have argued that Darwinism is not science, but that Darwin superimposed an atheistic/materialistic worldview on nature, then searched for the facts to support his theory. Darwinians responded that Darwin’s own writings show that he was not an atheist, but always believed in some form of deity. A careful study of Darwin’s writings, especially his posthumously published private notebooks and personal communication, reveals that Darwin was indeed an atheist and his theory of natural selection was formulated to replace a Creator with naturalistic processes.

Opis:
Salvation given man by God is at the same time liberating him from sin and giving him a possibility to live a divine life. Man gains participation in it in faith and in sacraments. These two realities are connected with each other, which was noticed by the teaching of the Vatican Council II that treated them as two elements of the same salvation process. Defining the relations between them is a significant theological problem, as limiting participation in salvation to the sacrament only results in sacramentalism; and remaining with faith only — in fideism. The connection between faith and sacraments may be seen in their personalistic and historical-salutary character. Both faith and the sacrament involve the entire man, and have Mysterium Christi as their foundation. Their mutual relation is a complementary one. The sacrament needs faith to be fruitful for Christian life, and on the other hand, faith is expressed and consolidated in the sacramental way. The time in the history of the Church, when this relation was emphasized, was in the first centuries of Christianity. In a natural way faith demanded to be expressed in the sacrament, and the sacrament needed prior faith. Return to this proper relation between the sacrament and faith should happen in two ways. The first one is referring faith and the sacrament to God’s Word, which will give it a historical-salutary perspective. The second one is mystagogy that will allow treating the participation of the faithful one in the sacrament as his participation in the Mystery of Christ. Closer ties between the liturgy of sacraments and God’s Word, in connection with sacramental mystagogy may be a way to return to the primeval unity of faith and the sacrament.

The focus of the article is on presenting the essence and values of communion spirituality according to Cardinal S. Wyszyński. Seen from the perspective of his teaching, the essence of this spirituality consists in man's boundless trust in God. Its value unfolds in man's effective influence on his environment, i.e. in his merciful sensitivity to the needs of his neighbors and in respecting the milieu of their existence.

Considerations, undertaken by the article, lead to a conclusion that reason and faith as sources of knowing God are determined by many factors. Analyses of Zofia J. Zdybicka’ s works show that the rational knowledge about God is conditioned with limits of the human nature, specificity of the nature of Absolute Being, as well as historical and cultural contexts (which contain possibilities of common sense knowledge, and type of philosophical cognition). While the knowledge about God acquired through religious faith is shaped with the historical Revelation of Divine Persons, and forms of its social and personal reception. So if reason and faith have their own autonomy, ie. “spaces” where they can be realized in accordance with their own natures, then it is not possible to give up on any of them without disturbing to know not only God, but man as well.

The paper investigates the category of religious faith, religion and God presented and criticized by leading British atheist – Richard Dawkins. He is a biologist but his writings on faith and religion are highly popular all over the world. Dawkins argues that any form of faith in supernatural reality is opposite to rational and justified scientific investigation. One cannot be a scientist and believe in God at the same time becausescience is based onrational premises and religious faith is not. He claims that religious faith is a source of all evil in the world. In his criticism Dawkins does not undertake serious discussions with any contemporary philosophers of religion or theologians but he invents his own notion of religious faith. It seems that Dawkins’ atheistic position is a sort of belief which does not differessentially from religious faith defined byhim as a belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence. In the paper some particular views of Dawkins are considered critically: a) a notion of religious faith, b) religious faith as a source of evil, c) a problem of existence and nature of God.

Odrzucając wiarę, współczesność paradoksalnie zawęża ludzkie możliwości poznawcze. Właściwa równowaga i współpraca rozumu i wiary chroni człowieka zarazem przed bezrozumnością religii, jak i bezbożnością rozumu. Papież wyprowadza antropologię z chrystologii: działanie zgodne z rozumem jest zgodne z Logosem. Łaską jest i wiara, i rozum. Prawdę o sobie człowiek odkrywa w chrystusie.
in his works, J. ratzinger/Benedict XVi devotes a lot of attention to the issues of faith and reason, their interdependence, inseparability and necessity. He considers these issues crucial for today’s civilisation, mentality and culture, in which reason remains dormant or blind. By rejecting faith, the present day – paradoxically – narrows human reasoning capabilities. Thus, the pope calls for the ‘broadening of reason’, i.e. its orienting towards cognition of truth, based on ‘thinking about the world as a whole’. This can be done thanks to faith and love, which enable men to transcend their cognitive limitations. Adequate balance and cooperation between reason and faith protect men either from irrationality of faith or profanity of reason. Whereat, the pope derives anthropology from christology: acting in conformity with reason means acting in accordance with Logos. Both faith and reason are signs of grace. Men can discover truth about themselves in christ.

This paper presents how the mystical life of the Polish mystic Sister Roberta Babiak began, developed and manifested itself. The author discusses the particular stages in her mystical life: from expurgation, through partial union, up to transforming deifying union. In this way, the author illustrates the dynamics of Sister Babiak’s faith and expounds its major functions: help to achieve deeper cognition of the redemptive truths; to get to know God Himself as well as to build communion with Him. The author also examines the attributes of this faith, emphasising the fact that it is ecclesiastical faith, shaped in the harmony with the ecclesiastical heritage and teaching. It is a light and a dark kind of faith, simultaneously: it grants a special gift for understanding the Revelation, but it also is an initiation into the mystery of the secret God. This is a living faith – rich in the gifts of the Holy Spirit – leading to the mystical experience: meeting God, Son and the Holy Spirit inside the mystic.

Opis:
The analysis of the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Church in respect of its concern for the heritage of faith shows that the highest level of the Church's knowledge is the truth about God who “is love” (1Jn 4, 8): about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The greatest wisdom of the Church, however, is taking this love out of the Heart of Christ, listening to His words, being nourished by His Body and Blood, and following Him “wherever He goes” (Rev 14, 4). The Holy Spirit by His Person shows us the inner unity of the Holy Trinity and the unity of the Revelation of God as well as the unity of God's eternal plan for creation, redemption, and sanctification of man. Accepting the integral and personal vision of the Revelation of God, we should acknowledge that the heritage of faith is not only the object that is received from Christ and faithfully transmitted by Church of providing the generations. The heritage of faith contains “the heritage of life” (depositum vitae), that man connects with God.

Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI
Opis:
Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI is aware of both the power and the crisis of faith. The Pope traces the roots of the contemporary crisis of faith in the complex network of external negative factors, represented by such phenomena as relativism, postmodernism or liberalism. However, His Holiness also reaches into the depth of a human being to diagnose an intrapersonal crisis. Overwhelmed by these negative trends, modern humans are incapable of the definitive comprehension of the essence of their faith. This is why Benedict XVI points towards the faith of the Church and its true power as a way out of the crisis. The history of the Church is not a history of scandals, but is a source of hope. This is the hope of the faith in Jesus Christ, expressed by the Church in its invariable, original message. The faith in Jesus Christ is the faith in a real concrete Person, the incarnated Logos. This is why Christian faith is personalistic, trinitary and communal in its nature, but its central attribute is its being reason-oriented, Logos-oriented. The characteristic feature of Christian faith as propounded by Joseph Ratzinger is its rationality. To believe is to place trust in Logos, the Sense that supports the whole universe and the human being. The Logos is not an Ancient Greek reason, but the Divine Logos who was incarnated in Jesus Christ. Under His power, Christianity becomes „the religion of the Logos”, the religion of creative power that has created the world, supports it and directs it towards the Pleroma. Is it, therefore, true to contend that the contemporary lack of faith is simply a loss of rationality? Let us hope that this reflection can wake homo sapiens up, if the species is still rational enough to realize the truth.

Gabriel Marcel is known as a Christian existentialist and a philosopher of hope. Hope for human beings in the broken world is the main thesis of the article. Marcel introduced the idea of a broken world to philosophy as a negative in the moral sense, multidimensional notion that is di- rectly related to our human world. According to Marcel, the root of the broken world is the mys- tery of evil. The broken world occurs everywhere where a human being is left alone without an authentic community, without brotherhood, without hope. However, even in the broken world there is hope for us. In the human soul Marcel discovered a mysterious sensitivity to the light of the truth and the deepest need for the truth. Those qualities of the human heart prove that it is possible for us to turn away from the broken world and to turn to the spirit of truth.

Prayer is an encounter expressing man's bond with God. At the basis of this encounter there is faith in the existence and love of personal God. During praying entrance occurs into a personal relation not only with God, but with another man as well. An encounter with another man in prayer, connected with a trusting call for blessing, changes the relation between the persons, creates an internal bond, in which prejudice gives way to mutual openness. Liturgy is a special dimension of the God-man interaction, in which dialog takes place by means of liturgical signs. In the catechetical formation intellectual education is recommended, but raising religious sensitivity, being open to God’s gifts, building a community and acceptance of everything that Christ offers through the Church, is more important. The catechist plays the priority role in developing the communication between God and man in the pupils that are catechized. In order to meet this demand he himself has to feel the need of prayer and of bearing witness. In using prayer the catechist's creative attitude is necessary. He should find out about the religiousness of the given class, their intellectual possibilities, spiritual sensitivity, the ability to reflect, and their general state of faith that was acquired in their homes. He has to synchronize prayer with the Church, parish or school feasts, as well as with the important situations in the pupils' lives, spontaneous requests made by the catechized, with the environment they live in, and with the esthetic qualities of the room where the lesson takes place.
