Opis:
Based on the results of detailed geological-geomorphological studies, old maps from the past 200 years, and historical data, the paper is the first to present the structure of the valley floor in the estuary of the Nida River, an upland tributary of the Vistula, and discuss changes in the development and course of their channels. The aim of the study was to grasp the importance of local factors, both natural (palaeogeographical, lithological and tectonic) and anthropogenic, in the morphogenesis of this section, where a relatively small upland stream crossed in the medieval and modern periods by important overland and water routes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth flows into the Vistula River, which is ten times larger. The discussed section is not deltaic in character. The branching of the Nida into several simultaneously functioning outlet arms may have been caused by the blocking of outflow from the valley during floods and the drainage of the flood waters at the valley mouth in several directions, via channels both permanent and periodic. Changes in the numbers and locations of the Nida estuaries in recent centuries have both natural and anthropogenic causes. The interaction between the main stream and its many-times smaller tributary in the studied section has resulted in a complex mosaic of forms and cut-and-fills of both streams, but with the Vistula playing the dominant role. The cut-and-fills of the Vistula “enclose” the Nida alluvium inside its valley on the Winiary-Nowy Korczyn line, while the cut-and-fills of the Nida only occur in a very narrow strip under the edge of the terrace. The Nida followed abandoned channels of the Vistula on Holocene cut-and-fill IIA, flowing parallel to the Vistula for 9 km. The floor of the Nida Valley lacks Holocene mineral-organic and mineral sediments, characteristic of other upland tributaries from loess areas. The regulation of the Vistula in the mid-19th century and the Nida in the first half of the 20th century fixed the courses of the rivers, completely changing the sedimentation regime in the estuarine section of the Nida, where backflow and associated sedimentation of fine-grained deposits occurred.

Opis:
Knowledge of the hydrodynamic conditions and the exchange of water in estuaries is important for ecological, navigational and water management reasons. The morpho-logy, river flow, sea level and local winds constitute important factors that influence the water currents and rate and extent of the mixing of salt and fresh water. The influence of the morphology changes on flow conditions, on the penetration of salt into the estuary and on the water exchange in the estuaries in this paper are analysed on the example of the Odra Estuary. The morphology of the Odra Estuary, and specially the Świna Strait, has changed immensely since the beginning of the XVIII century. The analyses were performed on the basis of data from in situ measure-ments and results of calculations. For the calculation the three-dimensional model ESTURO was used, because of the complexity of the hydrodynamic regimes and their three-dimensional character. The calculations were performed for the three different hydro-meteorological conditions for each of the five analysed morphological situations of the Odra Estuary. Some results of calculations have been presented.

Opis:
Few studies have examined testate amoebae assemblages of estuarine tidal marshes. This study investigates the possibility of using soil testate amoebae assemblages of a brackish tidal marsh (Scheldt estuary, Belgium) as a proxy for water level changes. On the marsh surface an elevation gradient is sampled to be analyzed for testate amoebae assemblages and sediment characteristics. Further, vegetation, flooding frequency and soil conductivity have been taken into account to explain the testate amoebae species variation. The data reveal that testate amoebae are not able to establish assemblages at the brackish tidal marsh part with flooding frequencies equal to or higher than 36.5%. Further, two separate testate amoebae zones are distinguished based on cluster analysis. The lower zone’s testate amoebae species composition is influenced by the flooding frequency (~ elevation) and particle size, while the species variability in the higher zone is related to the organic content of the soil and particle size. These observations suggest that the ecological meaning of elevation shifts over its range on the brackish tidal marsh Testate amoeba assemblages in such a brackish habitat show thus a vertical zonation (RMSEP: 0.19 m) that is comparable to the vertical zonation of testate amoebae and other protists on freshwater tidal marshes and salt marshes.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to recreate the spatial development of the Czarna Przemsza River valley, shaped as a result of high intensity human impact. Reconstruction of the study area landscape was based on cartographic sources referring to particular study periods, i.e. the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The final effect of the interpretation of the maps was to draw up the land cover profiles, which enabled a comparative analysis of landscape changes within the valley. The study revealed differences between the two sides of study area and showed that the diversification identified is also evident today.

Opis:
Waterbirds were regularly monitored in north-western Poland from 2002 to 2018. Counts took place in the most important areas where wintering waterbirds concentrate in this region, the most important wintering ground for this group of birds in Poland and one of the most important in Europe. In addition to the wintering function, this area also has a very important function as a stopover site for significant numbers of African-Eurasian Flyway migrants. The average number of all waterbirds covered by the study from 2002 to 2018 was 117,000. Numbers in recent years (2011–2018) have increased significantly (P < 0.001) compared to the first half of the study (2002–2010). The most important species found here during the non-breeding period were: Greater Scaup Aythya marila (mean number for 2002–2018: 20,600), Tufted Duck A. fuligula (26,700), Common Pochard A. ferina (1,500), Smew Mergellus albellus (1,400), Goosander Mergus merganser (7,700), Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus (840), Eurasian Coot Fulica atra (8,400), Mute Swan Cygnus olor (1,100), Whooper Swan C. cygnus (890), Taiga/Tundra Bean Goose Anser fabalis sensu lato (13,000) and White-fronted Goose A. albifrons (6,500). The importance of this region at the European scale for migratory and wintering waterbirds has increased, and this presents new challenges to the institutions responsible for protecting these areas.
Najważniejszymi gatunkami obserwowanymi na badanym obszarze w okresie pozalęgowym były: ogorzałka Aythya marila (średnio 20 600 osobników), czernica A. fuligula (26 700), głowienka A. ferina (1500), bielaczek Mergellus albellus (1400), nurogęś Mergus merganser (7700), perkoz dwuczuby Podiceps cristatus (840), łyska Fulica atra (8400), łabędź niemy Cygnus olor (1100), łabędź krzykliwy C. cygnus (890), gęś zbożowa/tundrowa Anser fabalis sensu lato (13 000) i gęś białoczelna A. albifrons (6500). Znaczenie tego regionu dla ptaków migrujących i zimujących w skali Europy rośnie, co tworzy nowe wyzwania dla instytucji odpowiedzialnych za ochronę tych obszarów.
