Opis:
Due to urban sprawl, the demand for land has increased for the purpose of construction. It is unlikely that soil available at different construction sites will be suitable for designed structures. For improving the load-bearing capacity of the soil, different soil binders are used, which are present in distinct states. In this review, the authors have collected details about various binders, which are generally used in the soil stabilization, and their effect as a binding agent on the soil. In this article, the authors tried to review different traditional binders. After studying various research articles, the authors found that lime, ground-granulated blast slag (GGBS) polypropylene, polyurethane grouting, and asphalt mix are frequently used binders. However, the authors also gathered information about the negative environmental impact of these traditional soil binders, which led to the need for alternatives to these commonly used soil binders. To diminish this issue, different alternate hydraulic and non-hydraulic binders are discussed. The authors found alternatives to cement and lime with the alkali-activated material consisting of Na2O and silica modulus and belite-calcium sulfoaluminate ferrite, which is also known as "Aether™." According to the research, both alternatives emit 20–30% less CO2 into the environment and also improve the compressive strength of the soil. The various studies promotes bitumen modification. Incorporating 20-mesh crumb rubber and bio-oil into the bitumen reduces its viscosity and improves its fatigue value. When waste oil is mixed with asphalt, it revitalizes the bitumen, improves fatigue resistance, and increases compressive strength. The soil particles treated by Eko soil are held together by enzymes, which give them the same strength as cement. Apart from that, low-carbon binders such as basic oxygen furnace slag, bamboo fiber, enzyme-based soil treatment, zebu manure for stabilization, and lignin-contained biofuels and coproducts are discussed. Replacing these traditional binders helps with energy savings. All waste products are recycled, and energy is saved by not manufacturing traditional binders. Additionally, energy is saved, which is required to avoid the detrimental effects of these conventional binders, making them energy-efficient alternate binders. The authors also summarize the methods used, impacts, and changes that occur in soil properties after using substitutes in place of traditional binders. From the review, the authors determined that different binders have various properties in terms of chemical and physical compositions, and they show different variations in terms of strength when added to soil with low bearing capacity or poor stability.

Opis:
The authors propose an innovative willow cultivation method, the so-called Eko-Salix system, on agricultural land not used for consumption crops using three-year-old live stakes at a density of 4.5 thousand∙ha-1 and biomass harvesting in a 5-year rotation using a specialized tractor equipped with a felling head and a built-in wood chipper. The basis of the conducted study was a large-area experiment, carried out in four replications in the years 2009-2013 on peat-muck soil (Ł-MtII cb). The experimental factor was a homogeneous crop of Salix viminalis - the UWM 043 clone and a mixture of Salix viminalis clones - UWM: 043, 067, 046 (a 33% share in the mixture for each). The willow planted from long cuttings (live stakes) gave a high biomass yield after five growing seasons (on average 86.4 t∙ha-1). The UWM 043 willow clone gave a biomass yield 36% higher than the clone mixture. Willow plant losses after five growing seasons averaged 15.9%. In the homogeneous crop, they were low (9.0%), in the mixed crop at 23%. The average height of 5-year-old plants was 8.5 m. The UWM 043 clone plants in the homogeneous crop had 9.7 m and the willow cultivated in the clone mixture was significantly lower (7.2 m). The average main willow shoot diameter was 69 mm. The UWM 043 clone in the homogeneous crop had a main shoot diameter significantly higher than the clone mixture. The biomass moisture content determined at the harvesting time of 5-year-old willow plants averaged 48.4%.

Opis:
Soil environment, both biotic (e.g., microbial community) and abiotic (e.g., nutrients and water availability) factors determine soil fertility and health and are directly affected by soil management systems. However, only limited studies evaluate the combined effect of nutrients availability and soil disturbance on the soil bacteria community structure, especially in conventional agricultural practices, on the forests converted to agricultural land. This study aimed to provide a viewpoint of the effect of different soil management systems, i.e., forest soil (natural process) and tilled land, on soil bacteria community structure on forest converted to agricultural land, according to a metagenomics approach. Moreover, each land use was sampled to identify the bacterial community using 16S gene as a biomarker. The sequencing was performed using MinION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) to read the DNA sequence from each soil sample. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was performed to comprehend the relationship between availability of nutrients and bacterial diversity. The results revealed that the concentrations of soil micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, and magnesium, were significantly higher in forest soil than in tilled land. According to diversity indices, soil bacteria were more diverse in forest soil than in tilled land. Forest soil had more distinctive taxa than tilled land. Several species comprised the most abundant taxa, such as Candidatus Koribacter versatilis, Candidatus Solibacter usiatus, Rhodoplanes sp., Luteitalea pratensis, and Betaproteobacteria bacterium, were more scarce in tilled land. On the distinctive taxa in each soil sample, Anseongella ginsenosidimutans and Janthinobacterium sp. were the most abundant species in forest and tilled land, respectively. According to PCA analysis, soil management system affected the soil micro-and macronutrients also microbial community structure between forest and tilled land. In conclusion, soil management influences the essential nutrient content and bacterial community structure of soil. Better management should be adopted to maintain soil quality near forest soil.

Soil erosion in the Nangka watershed has always been a matter of concern. Over the last decade, soil erosion has led to continuous environmental problems. A thorough examination of the extent of the problem was required to identify an appropriate soil conservation strategy within the watershed. This study was conducted to observe erosion rates and map out the erosion hazard level. Erosion predictions were analysed by using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model with the help of ArcGIS software. RUSLE was selected because of its quantitative ability to estimate average annual soil erosion and its compatibility with the GIS interface. The potential hazard of soil erosion was classified and ranked into five class categories as set by the national authority. The results reveal that the Nangka watershed is prone to soil erosion with the annual average values ranging from 1.33 Mg·ha-1·y-1 to 2472.29 Mg·ha-1·y-1. High soil erosion rates of 9.8% are in severe (class IV) and very severe (class V) conditions, primarily in the upper course of the watershed. The low annual average of soil erosion (class I and class II), which accounted for 75.95% of the total erosion, mostly took place in the steepness below 35%. The remaining area of 14.25% within the watershed is in moderate condition (class III). It is expected that the results of this study will help the authority in the implementation of soil conservation measures.

Opis:
Mercury (Hg)-contaminated soil remediation has become an urgent necessity due to its harmful effect on the environment and living organisms. The use of plant-endophyte partnership for phytoremediation demonstrates an excellent opportunity for cleaning heavy metal contaminated soil. This study aimed to screen and characterize the phenotype of the Hg-resistant endophytic bacteria from local grasses (Cynodon dactylon and Eleusine indica) in the Hg-contaminated soil of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia with siderophore-producing traits. Siderophore production of bacteria was qualitatively tested using overlay-chrome azurol S (O-CAS) medium and quantitatively tested using the succinic acid medium. The assay was designed using a Completely Randomized Factorial Design consisting of two factors, i.e., isolate type and incubation time with three replicates. The selected isolates were pathogenicity tested, then they were phenotypically characterized. All tested isolates showed a positive result on changing O-CAS medium color from blue to yellow/brown that indicated hydroxamate type of siderophore. The highest siderophore production was achieved at 72 hours of incubation, by the EI5 and EI6 isolates (62.90% and 35.31%, respectively). In turn, the CD6, EI5 and EI6 isolates achieved high siderophore production at a short incubation period (48 hours). However, during the hemolysis test, only the CD6 and EI6 isolates were not pathogenic. The CD6 and EI6 isolates would be used for phytoremediation on Hg-contaminated soil in the future study. On the basis of the 16S rDNA analysis, it was shown that the CD6 isolate was Jeotgalicoccus huakuii and the EI6 isolate was Bacillus amyloliquefaciens.

Opis:
The study aimed at elucidating the utilization of coal fly ash and oil palm empty fruit bunch compost to improve the soil phosphorus uptake and yield of maize grown on Ultisol. The investigation was carried out in a greenhouse. The treatments tested were a combination of four coal fly ash doses (0, 20, 40, and 80 t ha-1) and three doses of oil palm empty fruit bunch compost (0, 10, and 20 t ha-1). At 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after planting, plant height, leaf number and stem diameter were observed. At the time of harvest (10 weeks after planting), fresh and dry weights of cobs, roots, stem, leaves, and seeds, as well as P uptake on the plant tissues, were observed. The results showed that the application of coal fly ash and oil palm empty fruit bunch compost significantly increased the P uptake, growth and yield of maize. The combination of 80 t coal fly ash ha-1 with 20 t oil palm empty fruit bunch compost ha-1 resulted in the highest P uptake, growth and yield of maize. Compared to the control treatment, the increase in P uptake by maize, the fresh cob weight, the dry cob weight, the biomass dry weight, and the dry seed weight were 303.23%, 285.39%, 364.91%, 329.59% and 1,591.70%, respectively.

Opis:
The vegetation blanket is the most common choice for soil and water preservation. This is a feasible method that protects the land and environment according to basic agriculture and engineering theories. This study manufactured eco-friendly nonwoven vegetation blankets by using cotton fibers, far-infrared fibers, PLA fibers, and low melting-point fibers at a 1:1:7:1 ratio. This ratio yielded from the pilot study provides the resulting vegetation blankets’ optimum air permeability and water absorption. This study further finds that a needle-punching density of 30 needles/cm2 allows fibers to lie in a loose structure, and therefore yielding the optimum air permeability and water absorption. In plant growth evaluation, for nonwoven vegetation blankets that contain 50 wt% far-infrared fibers, the plant growth length is 1.3 times greater than that of blankets with 10 wt% far-infrared fibers. This result proves that far-infrared fibers have usually been applied to plant growth.
