Opis:
Mound-building was a preoccupation for the original, Indigenous occupants of the eastern portion of North America for at least six centuries. The efforts, from small to monumental, reflect a precision, often reflecting astronomical phenomena and are proliferated across the region. Today many remnants of these extraordinary efforts remain despite the systems of erasure that are characteristic of settler colonialism. Two such sites are the focus of this paper: the Newark Earthworks and Serpent Mound. Both sites are short-listed for UNESCO World Heritage status. Newark, Hopewell, and Serpent are all names given by dominant culture with no relation to the Indigenous architects and builders. They endure and resist, despite a long and complicated history of dominance. This paper offers a brief historical contextualization to demonstrate the ramifications of settler colonialism, which ruptured connections between Indigenous people and this land while simultaneously reinterpreting the sites as distinctly American. This lays a foundation for the web of narratives refashioned and recirculated in today’s contest over World Heritage status. Central to these narratives is ascribing the label of “sacred” to the sites and the vast number of constituents who claim “ownership” of them, including both local and global governmental agencies, historical societies, Native peoples, academics, and golfers. Furthermore, we can include those with religious and/or spiritual claims to the mounds such as the Mormons, new-agers, fundamentalist Christians, and contemporary Native tribes. Many of these stakeholders have come together to work toward the coveted World Heritage Status. But, if and when that happens, whose story will dominate? Who will make decisions? Whose voice will be heard?

Opis:
First floristical information from the Lednicki Landscape Park (LLP) was given by Pfuhl (1898, 1899) and Bock (1908). Next, after nearly hundred years a provisional register of vascular plants was compiled by Jackowiak & Tobolski (1993). Some information on plants we can also find in two works (Dąmbska 1971, Kowalewski and Wiśniewski 1994). The plant communities of Lednica Lake were described by Podolski (1991). The aim of this work is to present the complete species register of the flora of vascular plants of the earthworks in the Lednicki Landscape Park and its buffer zone as well as the results of a statistical analysis. The floristical studies were carried out between 1992-1994 and in 1996 and included 4 earthworks situated in the LLP and its buffer zone (Ostrów Lednicki, Ledniczka, Moraczewo and Imiołki) and one placed next to the LLP border in Łubowo (Fig. 1.). The flora of vascular plants of the earthworks in the LLP comprises 283 species which enter into the composition of 177 species, 57 families and 4 classes (Table J). Most of the species belong to the Angiospermae (Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida classes). The flora of the earthworks constitutes half a number of species composition of the whole flora in the LLP. Abounding in species (and also genera) are Asteraceae (41 species, 26 genera) and Poaceae (29 species, 18 genera) families. Nine the most aboundant in species families compose 58,5% of the flora. The largest number of species occured on Ostrów Lednicki (197). It is connected with the size of the island and its habitat diversity (xerothermophilous grassland, mesophilous thickets, meadow, place near a cottage, reedy area etc.). The flora of the other earthworks comprises respectively: Moraczewo (173 species), Imiołki (124), Łubowo (87) and Ledniczka (82). The largest group constitute the species occurring only on one earthwork. On the whole there are 111 species (i.e. 39,2% o f all the species). Only in two objects there were recorded 75 species (26,5%), in three objects — 52 (18,4%) and in four objects — 23 (8,1%). The lowest is the number of species occuring on all the earthworks studied, only 22 (7,8%). These are mainly species o f native origin o f an apophytic character (among others, Urtica dioica, Sambucus nigra, Hypericum perforatum, Rosa canina) and two species from a group o f older newcomers (Ballota nigra and relict of cultivations — Malva alcea). Among the groups of Raunkiaer's classification (Fig. 2., Table 5) dominante hemicryptophytes which make over 46% (131 species). Very considerable is also the occurrence of annual plants (24,4%). In the group of phanerophytes the woody forms dominante over the shrubby ones. In the geographico-historical composition of the earthworks1 flora in the LLP (Fig. 3, Table 6) the species of native origin (81,6%) outnumber the foreign ones (18,4%). Among spontaneophytes there are dominanting those, which show tendencies to the permanent occupation of anthropogenic habitats. There are over 73% of them. In the group of anthropophytes a great participation have archaeophytes — 12,7% of all the flora. Such a high percentage of archaeophytes one can connect with former, lasting mamy ages colonization, on this area. The number of younger newcomers (kenophytes) and cultivated species abandoning arable lands (ergasiophytes) is comparatively small (5,6%). Generally apophytes and anthropophytes constitute 91,5% of the flora (259 species). Among socio-ecological groups dominante species o f fertile deciduous woods and shrub communities. There is also a large number of meadow plants and species from xerothermophilous, perennial ruderal communities. In the earthworks’ flora in the LLP there have been recorded 4 species which are partly protected in Poland (Ribes nigrum, Helichrysum arenarium, Primula veris, Viburnum opulus) and 5 threatened in Wielkopolska (Conium maculatum, Trisetum flavescens, Populus nigra, Teucrium scordium, Acer campestre), The floristical studies carried out on the earthworks enriched the flora of the Park by 33 species (at present it has 561 taxa). From the relicts of primaeval and mediaeval cultivations occurs Malva alcea recorded in the Park except for the earthworks only in the wayside ditches and on the roadsides near Dziekanowice.

One of the challenges faced by surveyors in acquisition of accurate spatial data for mining applications is the risk involved in acquiring data in rugged terrains and difficult or inaccessible areas. With the advent of modern technology, accurate geospatial data can now be safely obtained for proper mining documentation periodically. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for data acquisition in mine surveying has been a viable means of obtaining reliable geospatial data rapidly and efficiently. The main goal of this study is to develop a semi-automatic UAV-based system for the acquisition of spatial data required for the estimation of the volume of earthworks. A DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter was used for the acquisition of image data of the project site, while the images were processed into a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using Pix4Dmapper v2.0.1, which was then imported into the MATLAB-based system developed for the automatic estimation of the volume of earthworks. The volume obtained from the automated system was thus compared with the volume obtained directly from the Pix4Dmapper software, having specified a contour interval of 1 and an allowable error rate of ±3% as the standard error. While ±1.02% error was observed in the volume estimated using the Pix4Dmapper, the developed automated system yielded an estimated precision of ±0.81% in its volume estimation, which proves to be more robust for automatic volume estimation in terms of accuracy and precision.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the flow coefficient of aggregate for 30 sands and aggregates. The introduction of European standards for the assessment of construction aggregates over 20 years ago introduced a number of new testing methods not previously used in Poland. One of them is the flow coefficient of aggregate, popularly called aggregate angularity. The method of determination is given in the standard PN-EN 933-6:2014. This standard defines the method of determining the index for coarse aggregates with grain sizes between 4 and 20 mm and fine aggregates with grain sizes below 2 mm. This test is particularly important when designing mineral-asphalt mixtures. Aggregate angularity, particularly in fine aggregates, is the main factor influencing the workability of mixtures. The flow time through the apparatus depends on the degree of roundness and form of the grain. The study determined the relationship between the flow coefficient of aggregate and CBR in relation to the uniformity coefficient. This indicator is still considered to be one of the main parameters that affect the suitability of non-cohesive soils in earthworks. It was proven that Ecs is more dependent on CBR than CU.

Artykuł powstał w związku z realizacją projektu „Od grodu do zamku – nowe metody i perspektywy badawcze”.
This paper is a result of the project “From a stronghold to a castle – new methods and research perspectives”, whose main goal was the creation of documentation (altitude plans, shaded digital terrain models, profiles) for archaeological sites with preserved terrain form. Basing on the digital terrain model (DTM) from airborne scanning data, documentation for ca. 200 archaeological sites (mostly early medieval strongholds, castles and early modern fortification) was created. The documentation consist of nearly 1400 visualisations. Basing on this material, some attempts of formal analyses were made. It was possible to observe groups of “similar” sites. The project has inspired a discussion about the possibilities of building a model of a typical form of defensive structures in the early and high medieval period and to ask questions about the cause of observed similarities and differences. Despite limitations of the method and the poor level of archaeological recognition of many objects, it seems that correlations between the form and profile of fortifications and their chronology is clearly visible.

Excavation photos of the earthwork of Altheim from 1914 show a fully-developed Luvisol (para-brown earth). In 2012, fieldwork recommenced at the site and revealed a second ditched enclosure as well as the serious impact of soil erosion: In the course of a century about 0.4 m of the ditch feature has been lost. In comparison with the total amount of erosion since the creation of the earthwork in the 37th/36th century BC the loss of soil material has dramatically accelerated during the past century.

Opis:
Accurately estimating the volume of earthworks is very important in mining engineering and construction. This estimation can be difficult because of the morphological condition of the stockpiles, hence, devising simpler, yet accurate methods of stockpile volume estimation is still a research problem in mining. Two non-invasive survey methods were compared in this research: the conventional ground-based and UAV-approach, for the survey of a twin-stockpile of gravel using Leica TS06 Total Station and DJI Mavic Air UAV, respectively. About 128 images of the area were acquired at 50 m flying height and 75% overlap during the flight mission. The images were processed using Agisoft Metashape Pro; a digital photogrammetric software, and the DEM obtained was used for the volume estimation. The total station data was also processed in ArcGIS to generate a TIN-model from which the volume was also estimated. The volume estimated from the TIN-model was compared with the volume estimated from the UAV-based DEM, using the volume obtained from the mill-machine as the standard. The obtained result shows that while 2750 m³ was obtained as the cumulative volume from the mill machine, the UAV approach yielded 2686.252 m³ and the ground survey approach gave 2830.713 m³. The percentage difference between the two methods compared to the actual volume is 2.94% and −2.31%, respectively. These results, and the result of the processing time analysis show that UAV approach is both accurate and time economical, which attests to the potentials of low-cost UAVs to provide robust alternative to the time-consuming and rigorous ground survey approach.

Opis:
A common practice in civil engineering during earthworks is the usual replacement of cohesive soils (fine soils), excavated during earthworks, with non-cohesive soils (coarse soils). Until recently, such a procedure was dictated primarily by economic and technical reasons. From an economic point of view, the ease of access and therefore low cost of using such soils instead of cohesive soils was crucial. The technical reason is, above all, the ease of compacting fine soils (as opposed to cohesive soils) and well-developed and well-known engineering methods for controlling their compaction. The situation changed radically when the new environmental regulations came into force and enforcement by the inspection authorities began. Currently, soil removed from a construction site according to regulations should be classified as waste. This fact has completely changed the approach of participants in the construction process to the use of local soils, especially cohesive soils (e.g. clays). Their use "on site" has stopped being an expensive option and has become a necessity. This paper presents aspects of the use of lime-improved cohesive soils that can be successfully used on site as excavation backfill. Problems related to the proper preparation of soil-lime composites are described, as well as the results of compaction tests. The paper presents the author's own methodology for selecting the content of quicklime in the soil-lime composite.
