- In the article, the author joins in the debate on the issues connected with teaching and learning foreign languages at the tertiary level, and especially teaching Russian as a second/third/another language at a technical university. Poland, as a member of the European Union, has been implementing reforms at all levels of the educational system. Polish primary and secondary schools seem to be prepared to meet the challenges of multilingual education but at the tertiary level the number of teaching hours is reduced, and they are devoted mainly to one language only – English. However, Polish students at technical universities are interested in learning Russian from scratch as a second/third/another foreign language. This is a relatively new phenomenon which poses many challenges for the learners, the teachers, and the universities, but which can also open many new opportunities for all the parties, especially when taking into consideration the process of internationalization of higher education.
