Opis:
Distortion of the axis and shortening of the limbs result in multiple musculoskeletal pathologies. Rotation disorders should also be included among the disorders of the axis of the lower limb. In the case of rotational distortion, only derotation osteotomy can effectively correct torsion-associated deformations. Rotational distortion correction is accompanied by translational displacement and torsion, which results in more complex biomechanics. Using the pedobarographic platform, it is possible to evaluate static and dynamic posture and gait, percentage of body weight distribution on the lower limbs, and balance. Physiological gait and distribution of weight on the lower extremities are symmetrical. Balance is one of the determinants of proper biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. An important aspect of treatment evaluation is pedobarographic assessment of balance and body weight distribution on the lower extremities ratio. The aim of this work was to evaluate the pedobarographic assessment of body weight distribution on the lower limbs and balance in patients with derotation corticotomies using the Ilizarov method. The study examined a group of 56 patients, who underwent derotation corticotomy using the Illizarov method between 1996 and 2012 at the Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System in Wrocław. The control group consisted of 54 patients, who were treated with correctional derotation-free corticotomy using the Ilizarov. Distribution of body weight on the lower limbs and balance were assessed with the pedobarographic platform. Following derotation corticotomy, the amount of body weight placed on the operated limb by subjects from the study group averaged 47.81%, 52.19% in the case of the healthy limb. These differences were not statistically significant. The difference between the average percentage of body weight placed on the diseased and healthy limb in the study group and the controls were not found to be statistically significant. There were no statistical differences in the average length of the gravity line or in the average surface area of the center of gravity position between the study and control groups. Balanced distribution of body weight on the lower limbs was achieved following derotation corticotomies using the Ilizarov method. Derotation corticotomies performed with the Ilizarov method allow for achieving normalization of body weight distribution on the lower limbs and balance, with values similar to those resulting from Ilizarov method derotation-free osteotomy.

Opis:
Hip resurfacing surgery is a matter of controversy. Some authors present very good late results of 99% survival outcomes. However, national records of implants point to the series of complications connected with biomechanical flaws of the implant. These results implicate the experimental research on biomechanical properties of HRS. The aim of the research was to define the nature of cooperation between the components of hip resurfacing surgery (HRS) and the influence of the deformation of acetabulum, the size of the implant and the nature of the bone surface on the stress distribution in the acetabulum and the femoral component. The calculations were run with the use of the finite element method (FEM), using the ANSYS bundle for this purpose. Four decrete models of the studied system were made: a model with the elements of the system connected with glue, a perfect spherical model with cooperating surfaces, a model reflecting an elliptical deformation of the acetabulum, and a model with different sizes of the implant. The results indicate that the stress values obtained for models with the ideally spherical acetabulum cannot cause significant deformation of cooperating implants. In the case of loads of the elliptically deformed acetabulum significant point stress concentrations can be observed in the spots of joint. The size of the acetabular and femoral components of HRS has influence on the stress concentration on the internal surface of the acetabulum as well as in the bone tissue surrounding the madrel of the femoral component. Moreover, physical properties of the base surface surrounding the HRS components have influence on the size of stress in the acetabulum and the femoral component.

One of the applications of the Ilizarov apparatus is the correction of congenital shortening and deformities. Ilizarov external fixator produces biomechanical structure with surrounding tissue, which is the reason why very important is correct stability of fixator. Large distraction in the case of high value of lengthening, and large deformity corection result in shear stresses that occur additionally in the regenerate, which can potentially lead to damage of the regenerating nutritive microcirculation of bone tissue and bone fragment displacements. Our objective was to assess the results of the Ilizarov method in the treatment of congenital shortening taking into account treatment strategy and the size of the axis of lengthening and correction. Our research problems include presenting the effects of biomechanics of musculoskeletal deformations on treatment results, presenting complications and their treatment. Between 1989 and 2009, 62 patients underwent surgery to correct congenital lower limb deficiencies at our Clinic; 33 patients were followed-up. In total, there were 70 surgeries (2.12/patient). Axial correction was performed in 26 patients (78.79%). Average age at the start of the treatment was 15.58 years. Mean follow-up was 8.58 years. Mean lengthening per surgery was 3.17 cm with the lengthening index of 50.7 day/cm. Results were very good for 23 patients, good for 7 patients, satisfactory for 3 patients. Complications appeared in 24 patients, problems occurred in 74.42% of the cases, obstacles in 4.65% of cases, and true complications in 20.93% of the cases. The best results were achieved in the treatment of patients with two-stage and two-segment lengthening with a total elongation of less than 7 cm, and without correction of the axis. Congenital shortening of the lower limb should be treated comprehensively because the shortening applies to all segments, and disturbs biomechanics of all lower limb. In the case of axial correction and large amount of elongation high soft tissue forces counteract the distraction forces. Hybrid construction may help to shorten treatment time, increase fixator stability and decrease rate of complications. We suggest use of hybrid Ilizarov fixator, especially when large elongation and axis corection are planned.

Despite of applying modern biomaterials during constructing long term orthopaedic implants, in clinical practice there are still present wide range of complications, particularly concerning matter of implant - tissue interactions. Since interaction between implant and living tissue depends mainly on biomaterial surface features, we decided to modify orthopaedic alloys to improve their biological properties. The object of this experiment was in vitro evaluation of selected biological properties, particularly cytotoxicity of titanium alloy and 316L stainless steel substrates coated with SiO2 or TiO2 thin films. The coatings were synthesized by sol-gel method. Each samples was placed into mouse fibroblast culture. The cultures in presence of tested materials were maintained for three days. We found no distinct toxic effect of tested biomaterials. We noticed increase of fibroblast proliferation in cultures with uncoated titanium and particularly SiO2 coated titanium plates.

Western Balkan jurisdictions (Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia (FYROM)) are often outside the focus of the competition community in the EU. This paper aims to rectify that, by providing an overview of the most interesting competition law developments in these jurisdictions during 2017. The overview will show that, despite similarities in their competition legislation, the observed jurisdictions differ when it comes to their priorities in competition law enforcement: while for some the accent is on merger control, for others it is on antitrust. The paper also highlights certain peculiarities of the observed jurisdictions, even though they are all based on the EU model. These include the existence of a notification system with respect to individual exemptions of restrictive agreements in three out of the four observed jurisdictions.
Les juridictions des Balkans occidentaux (Serbie, Monténégro, Bosnie-et-Herzégovine et Macédoine (ARYM)) souvent ne sont pas au centre du débat sur la concurrence d l’UE. Cet article vise à remédier à cela, en donnant un aperçu des plus intéressants développements du droit de la concurrence dans ces pays au cours de 2017. La vue d’ensemble indique que, en dépit des similitudes dans leur législation sur la concurrence, les juridictions observées diffèrent en ce qui concerne leurs priorités en matière d’application du droit de la concurrence: alors que pour certains l’accent est mis sur le contrôle des concentrations, pour d’autres il est sur la concurrence. L’article met également en évidence certaines particularités des juridictions observées, même si elles sont toutes basées sur le modèle de l’UE. Ceux-ci comprennent l’existence d’un système de notification en ce qui concerne les exemptions individuelles des accords restrictifs dans trois des quatre juridictions observées.

At present, the only active substance of Gentian Violet (GV) is methylrosaniline - a triphenylmethane dye of which amino group contains 2 methyl groups. GV can be used to treat uncomplicated bacterial and/or yeast infections, support antibiotic therapy of more severe infections, but also to protect medical equipment against colonization by microorganisms. In the light of recent studies, there are many new possibilities for GV application. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of viral infections, some chronic skin diseases and oncology. GV can induce apoptosis of tumor cells among others by elevating caspase 8, inhibiting NADPH oxidases, decreasing mitochondrial thioredoxin 2 or inhibiting STAT3/SOX2 axis. Preclinical and in vitro studies have also demonstrated GV efficacy in the treatment of breast cancer, melanoma tumors and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. There is no unambiguous evidence indicating the toxicity of GV, whereas its safety has been proven by its long history of use, its inclusion in numerous guidelines and its legal trade and distribution with no specific approval requested in many countries around the world. The article gathers the available knowledge about GV and its potential use in the future.

This paper presents technique for qualitative assessment of fatigue crack growth monitoring, utilizing guided elastic waves generated by the sparse PZT piezoelectric transducers network in the pitch – catch configuration. Two Damage Indices (DIs) correlated with the total energy received by a given sensor are used to detect fatigue cracks and monitor their growth. The indices proposed carry marginal signal information content in order to decrease their sensitivity with respect to other undesired non-controllable factors which may distort the received signal. The reason for that is to limit the false calls ratio which besides the damage detection capability of a system, plays a crucial role in applications. However, even such simplified damage indices can alter over a long term, leading to the misclassification problem. Considering a single sensing path, it is very difficult to distinguish whether the resultant change of DIs is caused by a damage or due to decoherence of these DIs. Therefore, assessment approaches based on threshold levels fixed separately for DIs obtained on each of the sensing paths, would eventually lead to a false call. An alternative approach is to compare changes of DIs for all sensing paths. Developing damage distorts the signal only for the sensing paths in its proximity. In order to decrease the misclassification risk, a method of compensating such DIs drift is proposed. The main features and damage detection capabilities of this method will be demonstrated by conducting a laboratory fatigue test of an aircraft panel. The proposed approach has been verified on a real structure during fatigue test of a helicopter tail boom.

One major challenge confronting the aerospace industry today is to develop a reliable and universal Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system allowing for direct aircraft inspections and maintenance costs reduction. SHM based on guided Lamb waves is an approach capable of addressing this issue and satisfying all the associated requirements. This paper presents an approach to monitoring damage growth in composite aerospace structures and early damage detection. The main component of the system is a piezoelectric transducers (PZT) network integrated with composites. This work describes sensors’ integration with the structure. In particular, some issues concerning the mathematical algorithms giving information about damage from the impact damage presence and its growth are discussed.

Dissociation is commonly regarded as a disruption in the normally integrated functions of memory, knowledge, affect, sensation or behavior. The present study utilized behavioral genetics’ methodology to investigate genetic and environmental basis of the relationship between dissociation and Cloninger’s temperament and character traits. A sample of 83 monozygotic and 65 dizygotic twins were administered self-report measures which assessed dissociative experiences along with personality dimensions. Significant correlations and high loads of common genetic variance between dissociative experiences and personality traits of novelty seeking, self-directedness, cooperativeness and self-transcendence were identified. Heritability of dissociative experiences was estimated at 62%. The study shows that there exists a considerable amount of genetic variance overlap between dissociation and personality dimensions. It also supports the hypothesis that propensity to dissociate is highly heritable.

The purpose of the work presented was to evaluate the capabilities of digital radiography to detect cracks in the internal structure of MiG-29 vertical stabilizers. The test object was a stabilizer previously subjected to fatigue testing and partially torn down for the needs of visual inspection. An inspection of three regions containing cracked parts was performed, with use of a pulsed x-ray generator and digital detector array. The results confirmed the method could be used to detect cracks in an internal structure which could not be inspected with other methods without affecting the stabilizer’s integrity.

Odnawialne źródła energii, to szansa nie tylko do poprawy efektywności energetycznej indywidualnych odbiorców, ale również do poprawy budżetu jednostek samorzą- dowych. Jednostki samorządowe mają obowiązek zapewnienia świadczenia usług mieszkańcom, w postaci finansowania zadań oświatowych, zadań z zakresu kultury, ochrony zdrowia, pomocy społecznej, bezpieczeństwa przeciw pożarowego, oświetlenia ulicznego itp. Budżety jednostek samorządowych rzadko są dopinane dotacjami rządowymi czy wpływami z podatków. W celu poprawy sytuacji budżetowej w sferze energetycznej, w województwie lubelskim 5 gmin utworzyło partnerstwo samorządowe o nazwie „Dolina Zielawy”, celem którego była m.in. poprawa efektywności energetycznej poprzez wykorzystanie energii słonecznej. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono koncepcję efektywności energetycznej w „Dolinie Zielawy” przy wykorzystaniu kolektorów słonecznych i systemów fotowoltaicznych.
Renewable energy sources is an opportunity not only to improve the energy efficiency of individual customers, but also to improve the budget of local communities. Local communities have an obligation to ensure the provision of services for citizens, in the form of financing of educational tasks, tasks in the field of culture, health protection, social welfare, safety against fire, street lighting, etc. The budgets of local communities are rarely buttoned government grants or tax revenues. In order to improve the budgetary situation in the energy sector, in the Lublin Voivodeship of 5 local municipalities have formed a partnership called the "Valley of Zielawa", the aim of which was, inter alia, improving energy efficiency through the development of solar energy. This paper presents an analysis of energy efficiency in the "Valley of Zielawa" using solar collectors and photovoltaic systems.

One approach to developing a system of continues automated monitoring of structural health is to use elastic waves excited in a given medium by a piezoelectric transducers network. Depending on their source and the geometry of the structure under consideration elastic waves can propagate over a significant distance. They are also sensitive to local structure discontinuities and deformations providing a tool for detecting local damage in large aerospace structures. This paper investigates the issue of Barely Visible Impact Damages (BVIDs) detection in composite materials. The model description and the results of impact tests verifying damage detection capabilities of the proposed signal characteristics are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie przemian struktury przestrzennej tzw. Nowego Miasta – jednej z dwóch historycznych części śródmieścia Mysłowic. Geneza tej przestrzeni sięga XIX wieku, gdy rozpoczął się jej rozwój funkcjonalno-przestrzenny w oparciu o funkcje graniczne oraz transport kolejowy (ważny węzeł międzynarodowy od 1847). Podstawowym źródłem informacji o stanie morfologicznym obszaru badań były archiwalne i współczesne plany miasta, przedstawiające Nowe Miasto w poszczególnych etapach jego ewolucji. Metodyka postępowania badawczego polegała na chronologicznym zestawieniu wybranych materiałów kartograficznych, zgodnie z metodą analizy planów miasta M.R.G. Conzena. Kolejny krok obejmował interpretację, weryfikację oraz analizę porównawczą treści planów poprzez ich nałożenie na siebie. Efektem badań była wizualizacja dynamiki przemian struktury przestrzennej obszaru badań w latach 1859–2013. Wyróżniono trzy fazy (stadia) rozwoju struktury przestrzennej Nowego Miasta: inicjalną (druga połowa XIX w.), maksymalnego wypełnienia urbanistycznego (początek XX w.) oraz regresu przestrzennego (początek XXI w.).
The author’s aim was to present the spatial structure transformations within one of the old part of the Mysłowice city – Nowe Miasto (New Town). The genesis of this area dates back to 19th century, when its functional and spatial development connected with boundary functions and railway transport (an important international railway hub since 1847) was observed. Fundamental source concerning the morphologic state of Nowe Miasto are archival and contemporary town plans, showing different evolution stages of study area. Research procedure was based on chronological comparison of these cartographic materials, according to M.R.G. Conzen’s method. The next step of research included interpretation, verification and comparative analysis of the plans through their overlapping. The final result is visualization of spatial structure dynamics within the study area over the 1859–2013 period. Three phases of the spatial and functional development of Nowe Miasto urban space were identified: initial (second half of 19th cent.), culminate (early 20th cent.) and spatial regression (the are of 21th cent.).

There is growing interest in the activity of sulfur-containing compounds on redox balance in physiological and pathological conditions, considering that some of these compounds have not only antioxidative but also pro-oxidative activities. Aim of this study was to assess possible differences in the effects of various sulfur-containing compounds on redox balance of cardiovascular system in its physiological state and in the early onset of hyperhomocysteinemia. This experimental study divided Wistar albino rats into two groups: saline-treated (control) and DL-homocysteine-treated (experimental group). Rats from experimental group were subjected to subchronic subcutaneous administration of DL-homocysteine at dose of 0.45 μmol/g body weight twice a day for 2 weeks. At the end of this period, rats were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected to be analysed for homocysteine concentration and systemic oxidative stress. Isolated rat hearts were excised and attached to the Langendorff apparatus. To assess the effects of acute administration of L-methionine, L-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, and sodium hydrogen sulfide, the hearts were perfused individually with each of the mentioned substances at same single dose of 0.5 mmol/l for 5 min. In collected samples of coronary venous effluent oxidative stress biomarkers were determined using spectrophotometry. Total homocysteine level was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, and the effects of applied sulfur-containing compounds were significantly different in experimental and control groups. DL-homocysteine induced considerable changes in functioning of cardiovascular system even before an increase in plasma homocysteine values, and action of sulfur-containing compounds varied depending on the presence of homocysteine.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie przemian struktury funkcjonalnej południowego fragmentu staromiejskiej części Mysłowic, tzw. Nowego Miasta, pomiędzy 1913 r. i 2013 r. Analizy dokonano w oparciu o mapy funkcjonalne obszaru, sygnalizując głębszy problem badawczy. Studium obejmuje pełne spektrum rodzajów działalności gospodarczych prowadzonych na obszarze badań w ujęciu historycznym oraz współczesnym. Postępowanie badawcze przeprowadzono w oparciu o chronologicznie zestawione plany miasta. Przyjęte daty graniczne prezentują układ funkcjonalny Nowego Miasta w Mysłowicach w czasach jego maksymalnego rozwoju oraz współczesnego regresu funkcjonalnego.
Urban development is continuous and very complex process which causes numerous urban space transformations, both in spatial and functional terms. The aim of paper is analysis of functional changes in the area of south part of major functional center of Mysłowice town at 1913 and 2013. Studies were conducted on the base of functional maps and their comparative analysis. The analysis include the area of Nowe Miasto (Nowe Mysłowice, New Town, New Mysłowice). Seat of local government, railway station with former emigratory station and surrounding buildings are located at this area now. Researches included the spectrum of economic activity at study area, according to Conzen’s method and conceptions of institutional base, both in historical and contemporary terms. The functional maps of Nowe Miasto were made on the base of archival materials (literature, commercial registers, town plan from 1911), contemporary town plan from 2009 and field inventory of economic activity at study area in 2013. The cartographic materials were registered and calibrated in Poland CS92 coordinate system (EPSG: 2180) and next digitized with applied MapInfo Professional package. Studies showed that functional structure of south part of major functional center of Mysłowice town has changed significantly between 1913 and 2013. At 1913 area of Nowe Miasto was characterized by activities connected with border traffic (hotels, restaurants, banks). Buildings of schools, synagogue and Evangelical Church gave unique character to this part of town. Contemporary this area is undergoing the spatial and functional crisis and urban structure was degraded. The major part of economic activities at study area in 2013 have endogenic character also.
