Opis:
This paper presents new results for the dynamic behaviour of fluid around a rotating turbulator in a channel. The turbulator has a propeller form which is placed inside a flat channel. The research was carried out using 3D numerical simulation. The rationale of the experiment was as follows: we put a propeller-turbulator inside a flat channel, and then we insert a water flow inside the channel. The turbulator rotates at a constant and uniform speed. The main points studied here are the effect of the presence of turbulator and its rotational direction on the flow behaviour behind the turbulator. The results showed that the behaviour of flow behind the turbulator is mainly related to the direction of turbulator rotating. Also, the studied parameters affect coefficients of drag force and power number. For example, when the turbulator rotates in the positive direction, the drag coefficient decreases in terms of rotational speed of the turbulator, while the drag coefficient increases in terms of rotational speed when the turbulator rotates in the negative direction.

Opis:
Droplet combustion has been studied by experiments and numerical simulation for many years, and most of studies were done about single droplets. As for droplet groups, some theoretical and experimental studies were reported, but less of numerical studies. One of the important characteristics is the drag of combusting droplets, which is closely related to flame structure, and is a sub-model in numerical simulation of spray combustion. There are contradictory research results for the drag of combusting droplets. In the present paper, large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to study the flame structure and drag of a combusting ethanol-droplet group. The results show that there are three combustion modes: fully-enveloped flame, partially-enveloped flame and wake flame in a droplet group, leading to the change of the drag with inlet velocities. It is found that the drag of droplets in the group is much smaller than that of a non-combusting particle in isothermal flows.

Opis:
Motion of gas bubbles in aqueous phase (either clean water or solutions of surface-active substances) is a phenomenon of great practical importance. Gas/liquid contacting is one of the most common operations in the chemical and petrochemical industry and mineral processing In particular in mineral industry, for all kind of flotation processes it is the main act responsible for the success of the entire technology As a result, properties of the liquid/gas interfaces are considered as a one of the most important parameters, determining the outcome of industrial applications and engineering processes. These properties can be modified by surfactants which adsorption (molecules accumulation) at the interfaces leads to the decrease in the interfacial tension and modification of the hydrodynamic boundary conditions. Description of a single bubble motion in wide range of flow magnitude (Reynolds numbers) is not trivial and many attempts have been undertaken to quantify a bubble behavior in liquids. This paper presents a short overview of the current “state of arts” on physics of the bubble motion in liquids and the elaborated models, describing motion of the bubble formed in liquid phase. The comparison of the theoretical models predictions with the available experimental data is presented. It is shown, moreover, that the bubble velocity can be used as a very sensitive tool for detection of organic contaminations in environmental water samples.

Zadie Smith’s latest novel, NW, presents a multiverse in which multiplicity is driven into homogeneization by the forces of those dominant discourses that attempt to suppress the category of the “Other.” This paper focuses on the development of the two female protagonists. Their opposing attitudes towards motherhood, together with their confrontation with their origins, bring to the fore the performativity found in the discourses of gender, sexuality, class, and race. Thus, this paper will explore authenticity and performativity in a contemporary context, where patriarchal and neocolonial discourses still apply.

The effects of blowing and its parameters including the jet amplitude, blowing coefficient and jet width in order to flow control was evaluated for a NACA 0012 airfoil. The flow was considered as fully turbulent with the Reynolds number of 5 · 105, and the Menter shear stress turbulent model was employed. Tangential and perpendicular blowing at the trailing edge were applied on the airfoil upper surface, and the jet widths were varied from 1.5 to 4 percent of the chord length, and the jet amplitude was also selected 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5. In the tangential blowing, the results showed that when the blowing amplitude increases, the lift- to-drag ratio rises by 15 percent, however, the smaller amounts of the blowing amplitude are more effective in the perpendicular blowing. Furthermore, when the blowing jet width rises, the lift-to-drag ratio increases continuously in the tangential blowing and decreases quasi- linear in the perpendicular blowing. In this study, the blowing jet width 3.5 and 4 percent of the chord length for the tangential blowing was selected as optimal values as well as smaller amounts of blowing jet width are more suitable for the perpendicular blowing. Finally, the lift-to-drag ratio was increased by 17 percent for the tangential blowing in the angle of attack of 18 degrees.

Opis:
Different types and quantities of freight cars will affect the marshalling forms of freight trains. In order to investigate the influence of the marshalling forms on the aerodynamic performance of freight trains under crosswind, three types of freight cars such as box cars, gondola cars and tank cars, were selected to marshal with locomotives. This paper used Detached Eddy Simulation method (DES) based on the SST k-ω turbulent model to simulate the aerodynamic performance of the freight train under crosswind. The wind speed, wind angle and train running speed were set as 25m/s, 45° and 100km/h respectively. The influence of different marshalling forms on the aerodynamic performance of the freight train such as aerodynamic drag and lateral force were calculated and compared. The results showed that the marshalling forms have significant effect on the aerodynamic drag and the maximum difference of the aerodynamic drag can reach 20.5%. Furthermore, the variations of the lateral force of the whole train and the locomotive are not apparent. The maximum difference is only 4.3% and 4.1% respectively. However, the changes of marshalling forms have obvious influence on the lateral force of each carriage. The maximum difference of the lateral force of the box car, gondola car and tank car is 17%, 20.1% and 24.1% respectively. The essential reason why the marshalling forms has a significant impact on the aerodynamic performance of the freight train is that there are obvious differences in the volume and shape structure of each railway carriage. The large volume of box cars and the cavity structure of gondola cars make their position a key factor affecting the aerodynamic performance of freight trains. Among the six different marshalling forms selected in this paper, the best marshalling form is: locomotive--gondola car--box car--tank car. Both the aerodynamic drag of the train and the lateral force of the boxcar are the smallest by taking this marshalling form.

Opis:
The work presents an experimental designation of the aerodynamic drag coefficient for two configurations of the Ahmed body model, with slant angle of 25° and with the inactive synthetic jet generator. When analyzing the aerodynamic drag of vehicles, most authors focus on higher Reynolds numbers, describing lower values only by designated trend lines. Which is why the main contribution of this experimental work was to designate the Ahmed’s body drag coefficient for low Reynolds numbers and to verify the obtained results with other authors experiments especially with the trend lines for Reynolds number in the range 0,35x105 – 1,8x105. For data taken from the literature, it can be seen that the value of the drag coefficient for the Ahmed body model decreases when the Reynolds number increases. The results obtained during the experiment show the opposite tendency.

Opis:
Bionics has been widely used in many fields. Previous studies on the application of bionics in locomotives and vehicles mainly focused on shape optimisation of high-speed trains, but the research on bionic shape design in the electric locomotive field is rare. This study investigated a design method for streamlined electric locomotives according to the principles of bionics. The crocodiles were chosen as the bionic object because of their powerful and streamlined head shape. Firstly, geometric characteristic lines were extracted from the head of a crocodile by analysing the head features. Secondly, according to the actual size requirements of the electric locomotive head, a free-hand sketch of the bionic electric locomotive head was completed by adjusting the position and scale of the geometric characteristic lines. Finally, the non-uniform rational B-splines method was used to establish a 3D digital model of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, and the main and auxiliary control lines were created. To verify the drag reduction effect of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, numerical simulations of aerodynamic drag were performed for the crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives at different speeds in open air by using the CFD software, ANSYS FLUENT16.0. The geometric models of crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives were both marshalled with three cars, namely, locomotive + middle car + locomotive, and the size of the two geometric models was uniform. Dimensions and grids of the flow field were defined. And then, according to the principle of motion relativity, boundary conditions of flow field were defined. The results indicated that the crocodile bionic electric locomotive demonstrated a good aerodynamic performance. At the six sampling speeds in the range of 40–240 km/h, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive decreased by 7.7% on the average compared with that of the bluff body electric locomotive.

Opis:
Aerodynamic drag plays an important role in high-speed trains, and how to reduce the aerodynamic drag is one of the most important research subjects related to modern railway systems. This paper investigates a design method for large-scale streamlined head cars of high-speed trains by adopting NURBS theory according to the outer surface characteristics of trains. This method first created the main control lines of the driver cab by inputting control point coordinates; then, auxiliary control lines were added to the main ones. Finally, the reticular region formed by the main control lines and auxiliary ones were filled. The head car was assembled with the driver cab and sightseeing car in a virtual environment. The numerical simulation of train flow field was completed through definition of geometric models, boundary conditions, and space discretization. The calculation results show that the aerodynamic drag of the high-speed train with large-scale streamlined head car decreases by approximately 49.3% within the 50-300 km/h speed range compared with that of the quasi-streamlined high-speed train. This study reveals that the high-speed train with large-scale streamlined head car could achieve the purpose of reducing running aerodynamic drag and saving energy, and aims to provide technical support for the subsequent process design and production control of high-speed train head cars.

The Russian military intervention in Syria, conducted between September 2015 and March 2016, was one of the crucial moments in the Middle East conflict which has evolved since 2011. It not only prevented the collapse of the regime of Bashar al-Assad but also enabled the initiative to be taken by the Syrian Arab Army. The simultaneous conducting of two military operations by the Russian army, i.e. the Russian involvement in both Ukraine and the Middle East, requires thorough investigations into the course of these operations. Such investigations may provide answers to a number of questions which appear of key importance to Poland, e.g., regarding Russia’s logistic and technological abilities to conduct military operations outside its territory, the military outcomes of the Russian intervention, and the potential social opposition to the human losses sustained by Russia as a result of such interventions. Considering the above, the aim of this article is to outline the Russian military intervention in Syria, and its influence on the course of the war. Special attention was paid to such issues as the causes behind the Russian intervention, the situation on the Syrian war frontlines prior to this intervention, the Russian forces engaged and the resources intended for this military operation, as well as its outcome.

Opis:
The shape and drag of bodies with small stiffness may change during the airflow. This problem refers to such bodies as flags, bands, banners, flapping sails as well as blades and cables which vibrate due to the flow. Laboratory tests carried out to point out the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a flag are discussed in this article. The laboratory tests were carried out in an aerodynamic tunnel at different airflow velocities for flags with different dimensions made of fabrics of different roughness and stiffness. The drag coefficient value decreases with the increasing airflow velocity. The drag coefficient is higher for materials with higher roughness. The drag coefficient value is also influenced by the fabric stiffness and kind of edge. Great engineering importance to the stability of a structure (e.g. a flag mast) and the safety of nearby persons and buildings are attached to the analyzed problem.
