Opis:
Christensen has defined a generalization of the property of being of Haar measure zero to subsets of (abelian) Polish groups which need not be locally compact; a recent paper of Hunt, Sauer, and Yorke defines the same property for Borel subsets of linear spaces, and gives a number of examples and applications. The latter authors use the term "shyness" for this property, and "prevalence" for the complementary property. In the present paper, we construct a number of examples of non-shy Borel sets in various groups, and thereby answer several questions of Christensen and Mycielski. The main results are: in many (most?) non-locally-compact Polish groups, the ideal of shy sets does not satisfy the countable chain condition (i.e., there exist uncountably many disjoint non-shy Borel sets); in function spaces $C(^ω 2,G)$ where G is an abelian Polish group, the set of functions f which are highly non-injective is non-shy, and even prevalent if G is locally compact.

Opis:
From the first months of 2020, COVID-19 transformed the landscape of education world-wide. Numerous educational institutions were forced due to the circumstances of the pandemic to move their courses online. This was the case at Akita International University in Akita, Japan. As the semester came to a close in July 2020, students were given an opportunity to reflect on their experiences with online education via end-of-term course evaluations, focus groups, and public meetings with university administration. From the results of these opportunities to share experiences in remote and virtual education, the authors were reminded that online learning can be a lonesome endeavor. However, it does not need to be this way. A sense of community, camaraderie, and shared purpose can be developed within the online teaching and learning environment. This article will offer suggestions generated from the authors’ experience. All suggestions have the authenticity of having been successfully utilized in the authors’ online classrooms.

Opis:
Inspired with Jude P. Dougherty’s works in which he stresses the overruling importance of the classical, humanistic education and the central place and role of religion in the Western culture, the author presents Christopher Dawson’s analysis of the Western civilization and his demonstration of the central role of Christianity in it. The author traces the premises on which was based Dawson’s opinion that modern Western man might be absorbed by his technical inventions, to the point of losing his soul.

The prevalence of permutations with infinite cycles

Opis:
A number of recent papers have been devoted to the study of prevalence, a generalization of the property of being of full Haar measure to topological groups which need not have a Haar measure, and the dual concept of shyness. These concepts give a notion of "largeness" which often differs from the category analogue, comeagerness, and may be closer to the intuitive notion of "almost everywhere." In this paper, we consider the group of permutations of natural numbers. Here, in the sense of category, "almost all" permutations have only finite cycles. In contrast, we show that, in terms of prevalence, "almost all" permutations have infinitely many infinite cycles and only finitely many finite cycles; this set of permutations comprises countably many conjugacy classes, each of which is non-shy.

Opis:
This paper is a review of the book: Stanley Corngold, Walter Kaufmann: Philosopher, Humanist, Heretic (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2018). The author concludes that Corngold’s book acquaints the reader not only with the thought of Walter Kaufmann, but also with the thought of a prominent, late twentieth century generation that in effect rejected the source of the very culture that nourished it.

Opis:
By examining selected works by Stephen Gaukroger, Alfred North Whitehead, Lynn White, Jr., Benjamin Farrington, and Paul Gans, the author discusses the formation of Western culture and the intellectual tools and the social conditions that contributed (and still contribute) to its being. He concludes that a metaphysics and a realistic epistemology—based on an ancient Greek confidence in the human intellect, in its ability to reason to truths that acknowledge the immaterial character of human intellection—is required for the West to retain its identity and develop its own culture.
