It is known that trees, cycles, complete graphs, the complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ and $K_{n,n-1}$, pyramids and n-sided prisms (n ≥ 4) are difference graphs (cf. [4]). Giving a special labelling algorithm, we prove that cacti with a girth of at least 6 are difference graphs, too.

Our analysis provides necessary and sufficient conditions for allocation of the roots in the complex open left half-plane what guarantees asymptotic stability of the differential-difference equation. The conditions are expressed explicitly in terms of complex coefficients of the characteristic exponential polynomial, what makes them easy to use in applications. We show examples including those for retarded PDEs in an abstract formulation.

The main theme of this essay is f i n i t e l i f e, which is the bedrock of modern biopolitics. In the series of lectures devoted to the ‘birth of biopolitics,’ Michel Foucault defines it as a new system of ‘governing the living’ based on the natural cycle of birth and death, and the law of genesis kai phtora, ‘becoming and perishing.’ Foucault’s answer to modern biopolitics is to accept its basic premise – that life is finite, and, consequently, reduced to the natural law of birth and death – and then slightly correct the naive liberal trust in the ‘naturalness’ of human existence by appropriating and internalizing the true essence of the biopolitical paradigm: the disciplining practices. This essay contests Foucault’s minimalist Neostoic program of the ‘care of the self’ by demonstrating that we can still hope for a n o t h e r f i n i t u d e that refrains from any renaturalization of human existence.

In the manner of Pallaschke and Urbański ([5], chapter 3) we generalize the notions of the Minkowski difference and Sallee sets to a semigroup. Sallee set (see [7], definition of the family \(S\) on p. 2) is a compact convex subset \(A\) of a topological vector space \(X\) such that for all subsets \(B\) the Minkowski difference \(A -B\) of the sets \(A\) and \(B\) is a summand of \(A\). The family of Sallee sets characterizes the Minkowski subtraction, which is important to the arithmetic of compact convex sets (see [5]). Sallee polytopes are related to monotypic polytopes (see [4]). We generalize properties of Minkowski difference and Sallee sets to semigroup and investigate the families of Sallee elements in several specific semigroups.

It is very characteristic, that the values of the derivatives at each point depend on the function values at all points in that area. Such operators allow one to easily create finite-difference equations for boundaryvalue problems. The operators are addressed especially to nonlinear differential equations.

This paper deals with the problem of the scattering of surface water waves by underwater obstacles. The main goal of the investigations is to estimate the efficiency of such structures in protecting sea shelf zones from open sea waves. A useful measure of the protection is the ratio of the square of the amplitude of the transmitted wave to the square of the amplitude of the arriving wave. The problem is formulated in terms of the finite difference method. It is shown that the discrete approach to the problem leads to eigenvalue problems for two matrices resulting from the discrete description. As compared to analytical formulation, the discrete method may be convenient in application to unsteady problems and obstacles of complicated geometry.

The solution of differential-difference equations with small shifts having layer behaviour is the subject of this study. A difference scheme is proposed to solve this equation using a non-uniform grid. With the non-uniform grid, finite - difference estimates are derived for the first and second-order derivatives. Using these approximations, the given equation is discretized. The discretized equation is solved using the tridiagonal system algorithm. Convergence of the scheme is examined. Various numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the validity of the scheme. In contrast to other techniques, maximum errors in the solution are organized to support the method. The layer behaviour in the solutions of the examples is depicted in graphs.

This paper deals with a finite difference method for a wide class of weakly coupled nonlinear second-order partial differential systems with initial condition and weakly coupled nonlinear implicit boundary conditions. One part of each system is of the parabolic type (degenerated parabolic equations) and the other of the elliptic type (equations with a parameter) in a cube in R1+n. A suitable finite difference scheme is constructed. It is proved that the scheme has a unique solution, and the numerical method is consistent, convergent and stable. The error estimate is given. Moreover, by the method, the differential problem has at most one classical solution. The proof is based on the Banach fixed-point theorem, the maximum principle for difference functional systems of the parabolic type and some new difference inequalities. It is a new technique of studying the mixed-type systems. Examples of physical applications and numerical experiments are presented.

A polynomial of some degree N is introduced into the investigation. Then the term "polynomial quasisolution" (PQ-solution) is understood in the sense of appearance of the residual Δ(t) = O(tN), when this polynomial is substituted into the initial problem. The paper is devoted to finding PQ-solutions for the initial-value problem under analysis.

Assume the eigenvalues and the weights are given for a difference boundary value problem and that the form of the boundary conditions at the endpoints is known. In particular, it is known whether the endpoints are fixed (i.e. Dirichlet or non-Dirichlet boundary conditions) or whether the endpoints are free to move (i.e. boundary conditions with affine dependence on the eigenparameter). This work illustrates how the potential as well as the exact boundary conditions can be uniquely reconstructed. The procedure is inductive on the number of unit intervals. This paper follows along the lines of S. Currie and A. Love, Inverse problems for difference equations with quadratic eigenparameter dependent boundary conditions, \emph{Quaestiones Mathematicae}, 40 (2017), no. 7, 861−877. Since the inverse problem considered in this paper contains more unknowns than the inverse problem considered in the above reference, an additional spectrum is required more often than was the case in the unique reconstruction of the potential alone.

Introduction. We consider a real life problem: a. person has made a deposit of D0 dollars in bank B, which calculates interest on this deposit at in=100•in% after each n+l-st quarter and the interest is compounded at the end of each consecutive year since the deposit date, which means that the interest is capitalised yearly. In the case discussed the basic time unit is a quarter but the conversion period - the time interval at the end of which the interest is compounded - is four quarters (for the terminology see [3]). We ask the following question: what is the balance of the person after n time units, i.e. after n quarters? Such a question is important to people planning various sorts of investments or making arrangements with life insurance institutions. We cannot find an answer to this question in available literature. In particular, it is not to be found in recent books devoted to the subject [see 1-6]. We want to find general formulas that would allow us to express this balance by the other given quantities. Such formulas allow us to solve inverse problems consisting in finding the initial deposit Z)q , the interest rate i or the length of the period after which a capital reaches a given level. In this paper we give explicit formulas for the above-mentioned balance. They can be applied to the problems with any number of payments. At the end of this paper we give some examples of application of these formulas to solving the mentioned inverse problems. The obtained formulas make solving such problems easy. A straightforward application of backward recurrence formulas derived from formula (2), although possible, is quite troublesome.ct

We investigate some problems of the following type: For which sets H is it true that if f is in a given class ℱ of periodic functions and the difference functions $Δ_h f(x)=f(x+h)-f(x)$ are in a given smaller class G for every h ∈ H then f itself must be in G? Denoting the class of counter-example sets by ℌ(ℱ,G), that is, $ℌ(ℱ,G) = {H ⊂ ℝ/ℤ : (∃f ∈ ℱ \ G) (∀ h ∈ H) Δ_h f ∈ G}$, we try to characterize ℌ(ℱ,G) for some interesting classes of functions ℱ ⊃ G. We study classes of measurable functions on the circle group $\mathbb{T}=ℝ/ℤ$ that are invariant for changes on null-sets (e.g. measurable functions, $L_p$, $L_∞$, essentially continuous functions, functions with absolute convergent Fourier series (ACF*), essentially Lipschitz functions) and classes of continuous functions on $\mathbb{T}$ (e.g. continuous functions, continuous functions with absolute convergent Fourier series, Lipschitz functions). The classes ℌ(ℱ,G) are often related to some classes of thin sets in harmonic analysis (e.g. $ℌ(L_1,{ACF}*)$ is the class of N-sets). Some results concerning the difference property and the weak difference property of these classes of functions are also obtained.

The author describes a construction of the positive difference scheme, which is the approximation of the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic second order equation with mixed derivatives in an arbitrary region in R2. The a priori estimation for the approximate solution is proved and the estimation of the rate of convergence in maximum norm is established.

Measurement of consumer preferences is one of the most important elements of marketing research. In the measurement of consumers’ preferences Maximum Difference Scaling can be used. In this method, a fractional factorial design is used as the experiment, where a limited set of profiles (product or service) is taken into account. The resignation of full factorial design, in which the number of profiles exceeds the ability of respondents to assess, means choosing one of many possible factorial designs. The aim of this article is to present the results of the measurement of consumers’ preferences based on different fractional factorial designs using Maximum Difference Scaling. The article presents the results of measurement of consumers’ preferences using asymmetric, symmetric and balanced factorial designs and the MaxDiff R package.

A boundary value problem for a non-linear difference equation of order three is considered. We thus obtain an expression for the solution of the non-linear difference equation that can be used to find an explicit solution to this equation. An example is presented.

A.C. Reynolds in his paper (1972) proposed a difference parametric method for solving the Fourier problem for a nonlinear parabolic equation of second order in one space variable. The paper presents a generalization of Reynolds’ method for the problem in two space variables with mixed derivatives. In this paper, Fourier problems for a general class of nonlinear parabolic equation, in QT = Q x [0, T], are studied. To solve this problem we construct a finite difference scheme with a real parameter. We prove that the solutions of certain associated finite difference equations are unique and converge to the solution of the initial-boundary value problem with 0(h^2) rate of convergence.

In this paper we consider the first order difference equation in a Banach space
$Δx_{n} = ∑_{i=0}^∞ a^{i}_{n} f(x_{n+i})$.
We show that this equation has a solution asymptotically equal to a.
As an application of our result we study the difference equation
$Δx_{n} = ∑_{i=0}^∞ a^i_{n}g(x_{n+i}) + ∑_{i=0}^∞ b^{i}_{n}h(x_{n+i}) + y_{n}$
and give conditions when this equation has solutions.
In this note we extend the results from [8,9]. For example, in [9] the function f is a real Lipschitz function. We suppose that f has values in a Banach space and satisfies some conditions with respect to the measure of noncompactness and measure of weak noncompactness.

Emotions in humans are subjective conscious experience characterized by psycho-physiological expressions and behavioral reactions. It may act as tool, if positively identified by complementing and enriching job performance but if negatively understood can ruin feelings and be a disaster. Emotions in healthcare organizations are important to be taken care of because in the service exchange process emotions of both the service provider and the receiver are directly involved. Although caring and curing patient by these employees is a professional activity but still, the empathetic and sympathetic behavior shown by these professionals influences their performance and success in hospital industry. Moreover, the behavior shown by these employees in the workplace is often discriminated on the basis of their gender as it influences the performance of health professionals. Based on above backdrop, the objective of the current study is to assess whether there exist difference in emotional intelligence of healthcare employees in hospitals with respect to their gender. A standardized questionnaire was used to conduct the study among 300 employees in hospitals with the help of scale developed by Hyde, Pethe and Dhar (2002). Data was analyzed through SPSS and results indicated that the level of emotional intelligence among females is higher than male employees.

The theorems on the estimates of solutions for nonlinear second-order partial differential functional equations of parabolic type with Dirichlet's condition and for suitable implicit finite difference functional schemes are proved. The proofs are based on the comparison technique. The convergent and stable difference method is considered without the assumption of the global generalized Perron condition posed on the functional variable but with the local one only. It is a consequence of our estimates theorems. In particular, these results cover quasi-linear equations. However, such equations are also treated separately. The functional dependence is of the Volterra type.

W przeciwieństwie do postmodernistów, których finalnie łączy niemal wyłącznie krytyka metafizyki i literacki styl wypowiedzi, teoretycy różnicy pozostają przedstawicielami tradycyjnego (choć dziś w dużej mierze zapomnianego) rozumienia filozofii.
The subject of this article is a comparison between postmodern philosophy and philosophy of difference, especially in its most recent version, which is philosophical deconstruction. In the first part of the paper, the history and general characteristics of postmodernism are briefly presented, while the second part discusses the philosophy of difference, not only in its present form, but also in its earlier versions, which include Martin Heidegger's “different thinking”, German idealism, Presocratic thought, and finally the philosophy of ancient India. Unlike the postmodernists, who are ultimately united almost exclusively by their critique of metaphysics and their literary style of discourse, the theorists of difference remain representatives of a traditional (though now largely forgotten) understanding of philosophy.

Research background: Among academicians, a growing interest in brand valuation methods can be observed since the 1980s, when it became obvious that firms have off-balance sheet assets which have a significant effect on their value. Moreover, in a number of cases, the need to value the brand arises due to the reporting requirements or transactional and other intrafirm reasons. The existing methods used so far have commonly focused on changes in variables such as sale prices, changes in customer behaviour, or sales volumes and very often lead to different results, even when valuing the same brand. We believe that the risk factor has been neglected in these methods, although having a significant impact on the brand valuation. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to formulate an alternative brand valuation approach based on the risk difference. This is defined as the difference between the risk to which a producer with a certain brand is exposed and the risk of the producer without a brand. Methods: Firstly, a set of assumptions was defined concerning the issue what conditions are required to be applied to use the proposed methodological approach. Next, the concept itself is formulated and tested while using the case study approach. Hence, in conditions of a model company, the method was verified with specific data. The results were also compared with the reproduction cost approach. Findings & value added: This paper presents a novel brand valuation method based on the risk difference. Building on a thought experiment, we compare an incumbent with a brand rather than with an average producer, which is a commonly used approach, with a new entrant to the market. We argue that in comparison to existing methods, our methodological approach reduces the number of unobservable inputs in the brand valuation process, and thus increases the accuracy and reliability of its results. Our method supports both researchers and practitioners to establish a better understanding between the well-established financial theories and new directions in brand valuation research.

On the basis of the control theory, the Fibonacci sequence can be treated as a solution of a discrete dynamic system defined by means of state and output equations. Distinct difference operations generate distinct state matrices of such a system. In particular, we obtain the matrix corresponding to the backward difference. In this paper, the applications of such a matrix to determining certain properties of the Fibonacci sequence have been discussed.

In this paper we apply the finite-difference method to solve a parabolic equation of a general problem of short wave diffraction in a conducting medium. It is based on the implicit Runge-Kutta method of the second order combined with the iterative procedure. We also present new numerical simulations for X-rays focusing using the mentioned approach. We consider CRLs with a parabolic profile with a radius of curvature up to 0.2 mm. The main goal of this work is to elaborate an X-ray calculator for a PC which would present new possibilities compared to conventional ones. The correspondent code is written in FORTRAN to obtain the focal distance and diffraction spot profiles. Simulations for two cases were performed, the first one with 33 Al lenses for X-ray energy 15 keV, the results showed that we needed to consider more than 50000 points in each direction which forced us to consider a one-dimensional simulation only. For the second case we performed a simulation for several lenses, up to 15 Al lenses to perform the 2-d simulation. We have good agreement with the experimental data for the focal distance, and for the intensity at the focal plane while, for the spot size, we have smaller FWHM for the Gaussian beam at the detector than in the experimental data. We believe that the FWHM we have is smaller as our lenses are ideal without any defects.

We give a short summary of recent results regarding the Beverton-Holt difference and Q-difference equation and introduce the theory of quantum calculus briefly. Next, we analyze the second Cushing-Henson conjecture. We extend recent studies in [The Beverton-Holt q-difference equation with periodic growth rate, Difference Equations, Discrete Dynamical Systems, and Applications, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, 2015, pp. 3-14] and state a modified formulation of the second Cushing-Henson conjecture for the Beverton-Holt Q-difference equation as a generalization of existing formulations.

Opis:
In this work, we present a computer simulation model that generates the propagation of sound waves to solve a forward problem in ultrasound transmission tomography. The simulator can be used to create data sets used in the supervised learning process. A solution to the "free-space" boundary problem was proposed, and the memory consumption was significantly optimized from O(n2) to O(n). The given method of simulating wave scattering enables the control of the noise extinction time within the tomographic probe and the permeability of the sound wave. The presented version of the script simulates the classic variant of a circular probe with evenly distributed sensors around the circumference.

Determination of the phase difference between two sinusoidal signals with noise components using samples of these signals is of interest in many measurement systems. The samples of signals are processed by one of many algorithms, such as 7PSF, UQDE and MSAL, to determine the phase difference. The phase difference result must be accompanied with estimation of the measurement uncertainty. The following issues are covered in this paper: the MSAL algorithm background, the ways of treating the bias influence on the phase difference result, comparison of results obtained by applying MSAL and the other mentioned algorithms to the same real signal samples, and evaluation of the uncertainty of the phase difference.

Opis:
Flood monitoring of wetlands and floodplains is a new issue in remote sensing, as compared to the mapping of open water bodies. The method based on spectral water indices, calculated on the basis of green, red and shortwave infrared bands, is one of the most popular methods for the recognition of a water body in multispectral images. The recently introduced Sentinel-2 satellite can provide multispectral images with high spatial resolution. This new data set is potentially of great importance for flood mapping, due to its free access and the frequent revisit capabilities. In this study, three popular water indices (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, Normalized Difference Pond Index and Normalized Difference Turbidity Index) were used. The efficiency of the proposed method was tested experimentally using the Sentinel-2 image for the Kampinos National Park in Poland. The experiment compared four extraction algorithms including three based on individual water indicators and one on a combination of them. The results showed that the 10-metre false colour composite produced significantly improved the recognition of flooding in wetland areas by comparison with single spectral water indices. In this way, flooded wetlands were mapped based on the Sentinel-2 data set for the years 2017-2018.

A class of fourth-order neutral type difference equations with quasidifferences and deviating arguments is considered. Our approach is based on studying the considered equation as a system of a four-dimensional difference system. The sufficient conditions under which the considered equation has no quickly oscillatory solutions are given. Finally, the sufficient conditions under which the equation is almost oscillatory are presented.

Opis:
Fibre optic microlenses are small optical elements formed on the end-faces of optical fibres. Their dimensions range from a few tens to hundreds of micrometres. In the article, four optical fibre microlenses are modelled and analysed. Microlenses are used for light beam manipulation and quantitative metrics are needed to evaluate the results, for example, the size of focusing spot or intensity distribution. All four lenses tested are made of rods of the same refractive index; they were welded to a single-mode fibre. Two modelling methods were used to analyse the lenses: ray-tracing and finite-difference time-domain. The ray-tracing algorithm moves rays from one plane to another and refracts them on the surfaces. Finite-difference time-domain consists of calculating Maxwell’s equations by replacing spatial and temporal derivatives by quotients of finite differences. In this paper, the results of the microlenses analyses obtained from ray-tracing and finite-difference timedomain methods were compared. Both mets of analysis showed the presence of undesirable side lobes related to lens design, namely rods too long for lens fabrication. The test results were compared with the measurements made with the knife-edge method. The use of a single tool to determine parameters of an optical fibre lens does not allow for precise determination of its properties. It is necessary to use different tools and programs. This allows a complete analysis of the beam parameters, letting us find the causes of technical issues that limit the performance of the lenses.
