    The atoms of Democritus keep properties similar to the soul because they possess the ability for spontaneous movement. Simplikios wrote that “atoms move in all directions”. In accordance with Greek ideas only the soul has the ability for spontaneous movement. Krokiewicz shows why “atomism - despite its genius – did not gain the acknowledgement among Hellenic thinkers”. Like the body, the human soul is composed of atoms which are subject to the physical necessity. A human being in accordance with his own nature can influence atoms of which body and soul are each composed. He can either make an order among these atoms, or a chaos. Atoms serve Democritus as the support for integrating the human reason with the ratio-nality of the world. They are also the basis for theoretical understanding of the mechanisms of the world.

    Although Bertrand Russell is probably most famous for his “logical atomism,” it is his ethical thought that this article will attempt to contrast with the ethics of the founder of the ancient atomism: Democritus of Abdera. Russell has himself suggested certain affinity here. More concerned with practice than theory, both philosophers advocate a certain teleological and eudemonistic morality; furthermore, they both adopt the same approaches to various related topics. Yet, what had only been outlined by Democritus was extensively developed by Russell. Hence, it is worth examining whether there is any deeper common ground between the two: can Russell’s clarity throw some light on Democritus’ fragments?

    The oldest conception of the origins of music in European culture was formulated by Democritus, who stated that music arose as an imitation of birdsong. This conception was the most serious working hypothesis on the beginnings of music before Darwin. In the musicography of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it constituted an alternative to the predominant creationistic theory, paving the way for the scientific positivist approaches which in the nineteenth century led to the eventual depreciation of thinking rooted in religion. In evolutionistically- and scientisticallyoriented comparative musicology the mimetic theory was rejected on the grounds of a lack of scientific evidence of the evolutionary link between birds and man and especially between birdsong and music.The aim of the article is to show that the mimetic theory of the origins of music was a relict of a mythical vision in which birds represented the materialised image of transcendence. The beginnings of music were linked to the voices of birds, which in many cultures symbolised human spirituality-above all spirituality manifest through death. Thus Democritus’ ‘hypothesis’ may be interpreted as a myth in which the ‘song of the beginning’ is identified with mourning

    The subject of life, birth and death constitutes one of the main topics in Democritus’ reflection on human questions. He seeks to understand what men think about the processes of birth and death and how they, accordingly, determine their behavior and attitudes. His reflections comprise a wide range of perspectives and aspects that include examining human behaviour and investigating how it reveals a certain temperament or inclination, inquiring about the nature of these processes and extending the analyses of the processes of birth and death to whole beings through the couple generation-corruption. In the present paper, I intend to examine the main theses and arguments which appear in the testimonies and fragments through which Democritus’ thought was transmitted from antiquity. Furthermore, I will also discuss the hypotheses that for Democritus the most important opposition was not life-death, but rather birth-death and that, at the same time, his idea of nature and life comprises both processes in the perspective of atomistic philosophy. I shall show that corruption has to be considered in two different ways, that is, in the context of physical processes that keep the kosmos in its persistence and in the context of the existence of natural beings, both living and lifeless.

    Tekst referuje interpretację demokrytejskiego atomizmu, przedstawioną w książce francusko-niemieckiego filozofa Heinza Wismanna, Les Avatars du vide. Interpretacja ta odegrała w ostatnich latach ważną rolę dla filozofii lacanowskiej, odkąd posłużyła Barbarze Cassin do obrony jej tezy o radykalnie nie-arystotelejskim charakterze teorii Lacana. W ślad za Cassin podążyli przedstawiciele „grupy słoweńskiej”, wykorzystując nowe odczytanie Demokryta do modyfikacji własnej teorii.
    This article enters into dialog with Heinz Wismann’s interpretation of the Democritean atomism presented in the book Les Avatars du Vide. Ever since Barbara Cassin referred to Wismann’s work to defend her thesis of the radically non-Aristotelian character of Lacan’s thought, Wismann’s interpretation began to play a vital role in understanding Lacanian philosophy. Cassin has been followed by members of the “Slovenian group,” who used a new reading of Democritus to modify their theory.

    Euthymia, the founding concept of Democritus’ ethics, is a thing of the soul, as he says himself, an intimate, eminently personal happiness. What place is given, then, to other individuals in this ethics? Can one be happy without the others? In order to answer these two questions the present paper examines the relevant utterances in which references to the others appear and concludes that despite a clear depreciation of the conjugal bond an altruistic dimension is very strong in this ethics and that several important ideas lie behind this concept.

    The question of the method was central in the thought and teaching of Prodicus. We have abundant information on this method but it is, probably, closely connected to various other issues (natural investigations, rhetoric and rhetorical theory, questions concerning the gods, ethics), on which we are less well informed. The right method to solve diverse linguistic problems comprised two moments and not just one as it frequently assumed. Similarly, the terms orthotes and diairesis of names, which appear in the sources, do not designate one single and simple procedure, but rather a double and more complex one, which is reconstructed in this article and whose objectives are clarified.

    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie (w porządku chronologicznym) występowania i jednocześnie zbadanie zakresu semantycznego pojęcia mneme (μνήμη) w zachowanej literaturze greckiej epoki przedsokratyków (VIII-V w. przed Chr.). Rzeczownik mneme należy do tzw. nomina actionis, oznacza bowiem z jednej strony czynność (1) „pamiętania” należącą do sfery psychologicznej, jak i (2) „pamięć”, tj. samą ‘zdolność’ czy ‘władzę umysłową’, za pomocą której osoba dokonuje aktu zapamiętywania. Analizie filologicznej, uwzględniającej zachowany kontekst, poddano 11 miejsc użycia mneme w tekstach 10 autorów. Jej wynik pokazuje wyraźnie, iż konstytuujący mneme rdzeń *mnā- nadaje temu pojęciu szerokie pole semantyczne, o wiele bardziej pojemne niż we współczesnym polskim terminie „pamięć”, ujawnia bowiem takie sensy, których nie zarejestrowały jeszcze całościowe słowniki języka greckiego, zwłaszcza dwa największe słowniki: Greek-English Lexicon (Liddell, Scott, Jones) oraz The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek (Montanari), a także leksykony do twórczości poszczególnych pisarzy. Ustalone przez nas znaczenia można uporządkować następująco: (1) intelektualna „władza, zdolność zapamiętywania” (u Simonidesa, Eleg. 14; takie znaczenie mneme pojawia się po raz pierwszy w historii tego terminu); (2) „pamięć o kimś lub o czymś” (Hezjod, B 8 D.-K.; Teognis, Elegiae I, 798; Heraklit, B 126a D.-K.); (3) „podziw, szacunek, uznanie, sława” (Hezjod, B 8 D.-K.; Bias, 10 [73a] Die Sieben Weisen, D.-K.; Epicharm, B 6 D.-K. / 254 Kaibel) – to nowe znaczenia semantyczne mneme, nieobecne w słownikach języka greckiego, podobnie jak kolejne: (4) „świadomość” (u Ezopa, Proverbium 111), (5) „wiedza” (u Anaksagorasa, B 21b D.-K.), (6) „myśl” (u Iona, Jacoby F 3b, 392, F fragment 1; u Demokryta, B 191 D.-K.), (7) „czas” (u Demokryta, B 191 D.-K.) i (8) „troska, dbałość” (u Teognisa, Elegiae I, 1114). Pojęciu mneme, niemal u progu jego rozwoju, zostają zatem nadane nieznane i nieodnotowane w czasach nowożytnych znaczenia, które w kolejnych okresach historii kultury greckiej znalazły szerokie zastosowanie zarówno w języku codziennym, jak również w literaturze i filozofii, zwłaszcza w myśli Platona i w pismach jego najwybitniejszego ucznia Arystotelesa.
    The aim of the article is to trace, in chronological order, the occurrence and the semantic scope of the term mneme (μνήμη) in the preserved Greek literature of the Presocratic period (8th-5th century BC). The noun mneme is an example of the so-called nomina actionis for it designates the activity of „remembering,” i.e. it belongs to the psychological sphere, on the one hand; and „memory”, i.e. the ability or mental power itself by means of which one performs the act of remembering, on the other. Taking into account the preserved context, philological analysis includes 11 instances of using the word mneme in the texts of 10 different authors. The results show that the root *mnā- constituting the word mneme allows for a wide scope of the term – much wider than the contemporary Polish term “pamięć” (memory). The root reveals meanings not recorded by the complete Greek dictionaries, including the largest ones: Greek-English Lexicon (Liddell, Scott, Jones) and The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek (Montanari), as well as the lexicons of individual writers’ works. The meanings deciphered here can be classified in the following order: (1) intellectual “power or ability to remember” (Simonides, Eleg. 14) – such meaning of mneme appears for the first time in the history of the term; (2) “memory/recollection of somebody or something” (Hesiod, B 8 D.-K.; Theognis, Elegiae I, 798; Heraclitus, B 126a D.-K); (3) “admiration, respect, recognition, fame” (Hesiod, B 8 D.-K.; Bias, 10 [73a] Die Sieben Weisen, D.-K.; Epicharmus, B 6 D.-K. / 254 Kaibel) – these are the new semantic meanings of mneme, absent from Greek dictionaries, similarly to the subsequent meanings: (4) “awareness” (Aesop, Proverbium 111); (5) “knowledge” (Anaxagoras, B 21b D.-K.); (6) “thought” (Ion, Jacoby F 3b, 392, F fragment 1; Democritus, B 191 D.-K.); (7) “time” (Democritus, B 191 D.-K.) and (8) “care” (Theognis, Elegiae I, 1114). Thus already at the beginning of its development, the term of mneme was assigned meanings which have remained unknown and unrecognised in modern times. These meanings were widely used both in everyday language and in literature and philosophy of the subsequent periods of Greek culture, especially in Plato’s thought and in the writings of his most distinguished student, Aristotle.
