Opis:
Waged in 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs has claimed over 20,000 lives according to human rights groups. The Duterte administration’s own count is significantly lower: around 6,000. The huge discrepancy between the government’s official count and that of arguably more impartial organizations about something as concretely material as body count is symptomatic of how disinformation is central to the Duterte administration and how it can sustain the approval of the majority of the Philippine electorate. We suggest that Duterte’s populist politics generates what Boler and Davis (2018) call “affective feedback loops,” which create emotional and informational ecosystems that facilitate smooth algorithmic governance. We turn to Patron Saints of Nothing, a recently published novel by Randy Ribay about a Filipino-American who goes back to the Philippines to uncover the truth behind the death of his cousin. Jay’s journey into the “heart of darkness” as a “hyphenated” individual (Filipino-American) allows him access to locally networked subjectivities but not its affective entanglements. Throughout the novel, he encounters numerous versions of the circumstances of Jun’s demise and the truth remains elusive at the end of the novel. We argue that despite the constant distortion of fact and fiction in the novel, what remains relatively stable or “sticky” throughout the novel are the letters from Jun Reguero that Jay carries with him back to the Philippines. We suggest that these letters can potentially serve as a form of “dissensus” that challenges the constant redistribution of the sensible in the novel.

The present paper aims to explore the topic of the vocation of a courtesan in the 19th-century France, by analyzing memoirs of tree demi-mondaines of the time: Céleste Mogador, Cora Pearl and Rigolboche. Does such a vocation exist ? If yes, how can we define this notion? The first part tries to show that prostitution isn’t chosen by women because of the their inclination to debauchery, but is the result of the failed education and parental abandonment. The second part focuses on the importance of independence in the courtesan’s life, as a part of their vocation, and the manner to gain it.

Literature is filled with silence, which, being polysemic, is a medium much harder to decipher than a word, whose semantic bearing capacity is more limited. To explore silence is to try to gain access to something most intimate, something that does not want to – or cannot – appear in verbal form. In Krysinska’s selected texts one observes silence on two levels, the narrative level and the story level. In most cases, we are dealing with a communicative silence. On the story level, characters use silence as an efficient way of achieving their goals or they are forced into silence by external factors. In many cases silence is imposed on the characters, it is not their choice, for in the given situation they could not utter even a single word. On the narrative level it is the narrator who condemns characters to the role of quasi-mutes, for any statements from characters are relatively rare. The narrator does not allow them to speak freely, he uses reported speech. He exercises active control over the reader, skilfully directing their reception and forcing them to accept his point of view.

Opis:
Testimonies have a sociological function: in order to achieve their goal, they have to be heard and validated by the group, and to become part of a collective narrative about the past. Even though they tell a personal story, they always relate both with other narratives about the same historical event and with their envisioned public, thus engaging in a dialogue with the society for which the narrative is meant. The case of Jean Hatzfeld’s Dans le nu de la vie offers an example of a publication of testimonial texts where verbal exchanges were actually involved in the process of formulating, sharing and writing traumatic individual experiences. The object of this article is to analyse how the mediation of the author, who listens to the survivors’ stories and inserts them in his own work, gives rise to a shared narrative where different voices both combine and confront each other.

Opis:
The article investigates into the conflict of virtue and ‘pleasure principle’ in Italo Svevo’s novel La coscienza di Zeno (1923). Throughout his life, the main character of this novel, Zeno Cosini, sees himself confronted with the demand of leading a virtuous life corresponding to the definition given by his social environment. Engaging himself into this project with resolutions which are equally categorical, firm and ready to be turned round to their opposite, more pleasant side, Zeno Cosini denies his inevitable progression on the slippery slope, his resolutions providing the promising basic condition for his various forbidden pleasures, which at the same time allow him to fathom out the borders and limits of good and evil. The more he digresses from his aim, the more he insists on increasingly exacerbated resolutions, for his emphatic obstinacy concerning his project of being “actively virtuous” allows him to indulge more and more in iteratively “last” deviations from his project which is obviously far beyond his possibilites. Nevertheless, Zeno Cosini manages to wash his hands off by making a virtue out of necessity. Thus, strokes of fate (for instance being diagnosed as having a mortal disease) appear to him as a relief or a blessing, and, looking back, he uses his entire life failure as a shelter from further demands of “reason”. In order to justify (also to himself) his recidivous existence, Zeno Cosini pleads the apparent powerlessness of the modern individual in the face of life which appears to him as per se contingent, ambivalent and full of imponderabilities. He thus delegates the moral responsibility to life itself which he judges to be “original”. From this point of view adapted cynically to his needs, Zeno Cosini realizes that what can be conceived as an “illness” is by no means his vice, his recidivism or his bad conscience, but life itself - which can be catered for with a great deal of good will, analyzed and fathomed out conscientiously via transgression - according to him, is nothing but a manifestation of illness - moreover, an incurable and mortal one - for which there is no remedy, but which can at least be truffled with transgressions. Key words: Transgression, contingency, ambivalence, irony.

Opis:
In his book De l’humanité, de son principe et de son avenir (1840), Pierre Leroux seeks to establish the “true definition of religion”, aiming at a synthesis of the religious traditions of humanity and modern philosophy. None of the philosophical answers that man has hitherto attempted to give to the question of happiness and of the highest good (Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, Christianity) can be judged as satisfying. Between materialism that despises the spirit on one side and spiritualism that despises nature and the world on the other, Leroux seeks a third way: “To love religiously the world and life”. His philosophy, which is at the same time a way of life and a hermeneutic reflection on humanity, leads to real and socially organized application of the principle of love, and – transcending in solidarity the opposition between selfishness and altruism – makes it possible to free nature and life from the contempt that weighed down on them for centuries.

Opis:
The article presents the history and analyses the form of Almanac des Honnêtes Gens [Almanac of Good People] by Sylvain Maréchal (1750–1803), published a year before the Revolution. This work is pioneering in relation to the revolutionary calendar of 1793 — it proposes a very similar idea of breaking with the Christian calendar and introducing a new system of values and for measuring time in human history. In his Almanac, Sylvain Maréchal replaces the names of saints and patrons of the Catholic Church with those of philosophers, artists, writers, and politicians who, because of their lives and works, deserve eternal memory of their posterity. The idea of “new saints”, symbols of human wisdom and the power of the spirit, anticipates the dechristianisation movement and the idea of a “new time” that was soon to be promoted by the Revolution.

Opis:
The author analyses the picture of family relationships in the 13th-century epics belonging to the cycle of William of Orange (Narbonnais), comparing it to the one presented in corresponding fragments of the 15th-century prose adaptation of this cycle, and alluding to the real, historical functioning of medieval families. At the level of mutual communication between the members of Narbonne family, some attenuation of the expression of anger can be noticed, by means of eliminating the invectives and other irrespectful forms. The same tendency appears in presenting other types of Narbonne family’s behaviour: in the adaptation, they are deprived of the epic vehemence and brutality (Aymeri doesn’t hit his wife, and his son doesn’t threaten him with his sword). In both versions, the family is strongly paternalistic, and the count dominates his wife as well as his sons. Nevertheless, whereas the epic song is concerned mainly by the differences between the maternal and paternal vision of their sons’ education, the adaptation focuses on the generation conflict. Finally, one can notice a change in the place of the family in the system of values: in the song, the social values are more important (position, wellness, welfare of the lineage as a whole), whereas the prose author seems to value more the relationships between family members defined as unique, irreplaceable creatures.

We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

The present paper focuses on the diary of the French painter Félix Ziem (1821-1911) and inquires the destiny of the painter emerging from his writings. Basing on the theories of diary writing (B. Didier, A. Girard, J. Lis), it shows how the artist represents his profession. The analyses convey that three elements are necessary for Félix Ziem to fulfill the destiny of the painter: hard work, dreamy contemplation of nature and travels. Those elements are described in detail in the three consecutive parts of the paper. The conclusions display a self-confident artist, influenced by Romantic aesthetics, who consciously constructs in his diary a testimony of his life as an example of painter’s destiny.

In the novel La 628-E8 declaring his disgust with art, as if looking for a confirmation of his feeling, Octave Mirbeau dedicates three subchapters of his work to Balzac, in order to create a biography, taking into account only the figure of the writer as a man, leaving out his oeuvre. But while the text seems to be a farewell with literature and with its effect of artificiality, praising the virtues of the text-document containing elements which are exclusively the author's own, a fragment which describes Balzac's death makes the word emerge in all its complexity: the word as an evidence of reality or as an invention. Thus, through its nature of elusiveness, it becomes a reconciliation between literature and life.

Masonic Royal Art, combining science and philosophy with spiritual research and moral improvement, radiates throughout the whole 19th century, which is the successor of both rationalist Enlightenment thought and 18th century illuminism. One of the key ideas of Freemasonry is the “Religion in which all Men agree” mentioned in Anderson’s Constitutions. The idea of a universal religion, referring to a primal revelation or taking the form of natural religion, has numerous variations in the 19th century, formed in contact with romantic literature (Madame de Staël), social utopias (Saint-Simonianism) or humanitarianism (Pierre Leroux). The aim of the article is to show the role played in this process by Freemasons and the influence they have exerted on other authors reflection on religion.
