Opis:
Ultrasonic pulse echo technique was used to study cupric oxide (CuO) thin films. CuO thin films were prepared using sol gel technique. They were doped with Lithium (Li) (1%, 2% and 4%). Thin films’ thickness (d) and band gap energy (Eg) were measured. In addition, elastic moduli (longitudinal (L), shear (G), bulk (K) and Young’s (E)) and Poisson’s ratio (v) were determined to estimate the microstructure properties of the prepared films. The study ameliorated the used transducers to overcome their dead zone and beam scattering; wedges were developed. The results showed the effectiveness of these wedges. They enhanced transducers’ sensitivity by changing the dead zone, beam diameter, beam directivity and waves’ transmission. Also, the study noted that Li doping caused the improvement of CuO thin films to be more useful in solar cell fabrication. Li-CuO thin films had narrower band gap. Thus, they acquired a high quantum yield for the excited carriers; also they gained more efficiency to absorb solar light.

The oxygen isotope effect on the first- and second-order Raman active modes of high-quality La$\text{}_{2-x}$Sr$\text{}_{x}$Cu$\text{}^{16,18}$O$\text{}_{4}$ (80% substitution $\text{}^{16}$O by $\text{}^{18}$O) polycrystalline compounds with x=0.00, 0.015 was investigated at low temperatures. In the second-order Raman scattering several weak and strong peaks were observed and assigned to oxygen atom vibrations. With the isotopic substitution the apex oxygen mode follows quite well the mass harmonic law at all temperatures studied, while the soft mode is anharmonic in the temperature range of 77-180 K and for higher temperatures its anharmonicity is strongly increased. The temperature dependence of the energy of the soft mode for x=0.0 shows also a modification at≈180 K and an abnormal behaviour at≈280 K, which may be related with the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase.

Nanothermite composites containing metal oxide and metal fuel are attracting attention due to their outstanding combustion characteristics. The morphology of metal oxide is important for the performance of nanothermite composites. In this paper, branch-, plate-, sphere-, and hollow sphere-like CuO nano/microstructures were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The CuO/Al based nanothermites were prepared via ultrasonic mixing of the asobtained CuO products and nano-Al. The combustion behaviour of CuO/Al based nanothermites was analyzed by DSC and laser ignition. This study shows that this nanoscale mixing resulted in a large interfacial contact area and low diffusional resistance between the fuel and the oxidizer, and the reaction reflects large energy and laser ignition sensitivity.

The gravimetric analysis and the iodometric titration, both showed a deficiency on Cu-site, steadily increasing vs. time with a slight tendency to a saturation. The X-ray analysis of the resulting products showed that even after 272 h of sintering, the samples remained single phase of the "214" structure type. Refinement of their crystal structures as well as density measurements, both allowed confirming Cu deficient structure constitution of these samples. Results of dc-magnetization measurements, performed prior to reduction of the sample's overall oxygen content, did not show any sign of superconductivity down to 4.2 K. These preliminary results indicate that copper deficiency, developing during synthesis, may occur to be a decisive factor for the reported lack of superconductivity in Ce-doped Gd$\text{}_{2}$CuO$\text{}_{4}$ phase. Oxygen content reduction and further tests on the samples obtained are in progress.

Al-CuO is a thermite material exhibiting the exothermic reaction only when aluminum melts. For wide spread of its applica-tion, the reaction temperature needs to be reduced in addition to the enhancement of total reaction energy. In the present study, a thermite nanocomposite with a large contact area between Al and CuO was fabricated in order to lower the exothermic reaction temperature and to improve the reactivity. A cryomilling process was performed to achieve the nanostructure, and the effect of composition on the microstructure and its reactivity was studied in detail. The microstructure was characterized using SEM and XRD, and the thermal property was analyzed using DSC. The results show that as the molar ratio between Al and CuO varies, the fraction of uniform nanocomposite structure was changed affecting the exothermic reaction characteristics.

Opis:
The present study explores magnetic nanoliquid mixed convection in a double lid–driven U-shaped enclosure with discrete heat-ing using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) numerical method. The nanoliquid thermal conductivity and viscosity are calculated using the Maxwell and Brinkman models respectively. Nanoliquid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and mixed convection are analyzed and entropy generation minimisation has been studied. The presented results for isotherms, stream isolines and entropy generation describe the interaction between the various physical phenomena inherent to the problem including the buoyancy, magnetic and shear forces. The operating parameters’ ranges are: Reynolds number (Re: 1–100), Hartman number (Ha: 0–80), magnetic field inclination (γ: 0°–90°), nanoparticles volume fraction (ϕ: 0–0.04) and inclination angle (α: 0°–90°). It was found that the and the total entropy generation augment by increasing Re, ϕ: and γ. conversely, an opposite effect was obtained by increasing Ha and α. The optimum magnetic field and cavity inclination angles to maximum heat transfer are γ = 90° and α = 0.

Opis:
Experimental studies on drag reduction (DR) of CuO based nanofluid with the additives of mixture of cationic surfactant CTAC (cetyltrimethylammonium chloride) and sodium salycilate - NaSal were performed. The obtained results were compared with those for water solution of CTAC/NaSal. Values of pressure drop were measured in specially designed laboratory setup equipped with measuring tubes of three different diameters - 4, 8 and 12 mm. It was found that the addition of surfactant and sodium salycilate mixture to nanofluid decreased its pressure drop during flow, however the drag reducing effect was greater for pure water. The DR effect obtained was in the range of 20 ÷ 70% for CuO based nanofluid. The diameter effect was also observed - the DR coefficient was greater for pipes of smaller inner diameters.
Przeprowadzono badania eksperymentalne dotyczące obniżenia oporów przepływu (DR) w nanopłynie z cząstkami CuO oraz dodatkiem mieszaniny kationowego surfaktantu CTAC (chlorek cetylotrimetyloamoniowy) i salicylanu sodu - NaSal. Otrzymane wyniki porównano z otrzymanymi dla wodnego roztworu CTAC/NaSal. Wartości oporów przepływu mierzono w specjalnie w tym celu zaprojektowanej instalacji laboratoryjnej wyposażonej w rurki pomiarowe o trzech różnych średnicach - 4, 8 i 12 mm.

In the present work, ZnO/CuO composite nanostructures have been grown on fluorine doped tin oxide coated glass substrate by aqueous chemical growth method. To observe the effect of post growth annealing (500°C, 1 min) on the structural properties of ZnO nanorods scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction techniques have been utilized. SEM images of post growth annealed (post growth annealed) sample reveal that the average diameter of ZnO NRs has considerably increased in comparison with as grown sample. Moreover after post growth annealing the ZnO NRs showed more clearly hexagonal wurtzite structure. Beside this the NRs are also uniform and well aligned with a high aspect ratio of $~10$. In XRD pattern the strongly intense (002) peak of the post growth annealing sample suggest that the crystal quality of the NRs have also been improved significantly. Since the structural improvement have a significant impact on charge transport properties as well, therefore the effect of post growth annealed has also been investigated by the electrical characterization of ZnO/CuO based heterojunction. The current-voltage measurements of the post growth annealed sample showed improvement in the current in comparison with as grown sample. The impedance study has also confirmed that the post growth annealed has influence on the electrical properties. The presented post growth annealed heterojunction of ZnO/CuO may have space in applications like sensors and oxide based diodes in the devices fabrication.

This article reports the effects of CuO/water based coolant on specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of four stroke single cylinder diesel engine. The CuO nanoparticles of 27 nm were used to prepare the nanofluid-based engine coolant. Three different volume concentrations (i.e 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) of CuO/water nanofluids were prepared by using two-step method. The purpose of this study is to investigate the exhaust emissions (NOx), exhaust gas temperature and specific fuel consumption under different load conditions with CuO/water nanofluid. After a series of experiments, it was observed that the CuO/water nanofluids, even at low volume concentrations, have a significant influence on exhaust emissions. The experimental results revealed that, at full load condition, the specific fuel consumption was reduced by 8.6%, 15.1% and 21.1% for the addition of 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% CuO nanoparticles with water, respectively. Also, the emission tests were concluded that 881 ppm, 853 ppm and 833 ppm of NOx emissions were observed at high load with 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% volume concentrations of CuO/water nanofluids, respectively.

The effects of four different kinds of nanoparticles (NPs), namely, CuO, ZnO, TiO2, and Au, of the sizes ranging from <20 nm to 50 nm on Daphnia magna, early life stage of zebrafish, and various enzymes have been investigated. The experimental results showed that the NPs inhibited both the body length and hatching rate of zebrafish larvae; the small nanoparticles exhibited more toxicity. In a 21 day chronic toxicity test, metal ions of higher concentrations significantly reduced the number of Daphnia magna offspring. Studies on enzyme activity showed that the NPs reduced the glutathione content and inhibited catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, resulting in shorter body length, lower hatching success, and lower reproduction of zebrafish larvae. Therefore, studies should focus more on the potential toxicity of smaller NPs.

In this paper, the critical role played by various types of defects and strain relaxation mechanisms in high-T$\text{}_{c}$ thin films is highlighted and illustrated with examples. The defects are essential for providing adequate diffusion channels for oxygen ingress during the cooling step in c-axis thin films. The operation of strain relaxation mechanisms necessitated by the lattice mismatch between film and substrate can impose a compressive or tensile biaxial pressure, which either increases or reduces the critical temperature.

Processes of SrCuO$\text{}_{2}$ and Sr$\text{}_{2}$CuO$\text{}_{3}$ ceramics decomposition induced by contact with water and carbon dioxide were studied by EPR. The dominant signals in the spectra were found to originate from Sr$\text{}_{2}$Cu(OH)$\text{}_{6}$ (for Sr$\text{}_{2}$CuO$\text{}_{3}$) and SrCu(OH)$\text{}_{4}$·H$\text{}_{2}$O (for SrCuO$\text{}_{2}$) compounds. The thermally induced conversion of SrCu(OH)$\text{}_{4}$·H$\text{}_{2}$O into Sr$\text{}_{2}$Cu(OH)$\text{}_{6}$ was analysed, and its product CuO was found to exist in the nanocrystalline form. The presence of CO$\text{}_{2}$, reacting with Sr(OH)$\text{}_{2}$, was shown to modify the decomposition process leading to the appearance of SrCu(OH)$\text{}_{4}$·H$\text{}_{2}$O, some hydroxycarbonates and Cu(OH)$\text{}_{2}$ on the surface of ceramics studied. At temperatures higher than 300ºC CuO reacts back with Sr(OH)$\text{}_{2}$. For the samples being in contact with atmospheric moisture this compound, deposited on a surface of SrCuO$\text{}_{2}$, decomposes to Sr$\text{}_{2}$Cu(OH)$\text{}_{6}$. The presence of the antiferromagnetic compounds Cu(OH)$\text{}_{2}$, CuO, and Cu$\text{}_{2}$[(OH)$\text{}_{2}$CO$\text{}_{3}$] in the samples can influence the results of magnetic measurements of the studied ceramics.
