As long as high resolution or long-range observation is to be achieved using infrared detection, it will be necessary to cool down the detector in order to reach the best sensitivity and dynamics. This paper describes different cooling solutions currently used for this purpose discussing advantages and drawbacks. Some guideline is given for cooler choice and selection. The focus is on rotary Stirling coolers illustrated by description of the RMs1 cooler dedicated to high operating temperature size, weight, and power infrared detectors. A user case study is presented with cooler power consumption and cool down time of the RMs1 cooler when integrated in IRnova’s Oden MW IDDCAs.

The paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of the integration of a cryogenic air separation unit into a negative CO2 emission gas power plant. The power cycle utilizes sewage sludge as fuel so this system fits into the innovative idea of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. A cryogenic air separation unit integrated with the power plant was simulated in professional plant engineering and thermodynamic process analysis software. Two cases of the thermodynamic cycle have been studied, namely with the exhaust bleed for fuel treatment and without it. The results of calculations indicate that the net efficiencies of the negative CO2 emission gas power plant reach 27.05% (combustion in 95.0% pure oxygen) and 24.57% (combustion in 99.5% pure oxygen) with the bleed. The efficiencies of the cycle without the bleed are 29.26% and 27.0% for combustion in 95.0% pure oxygen and 99.5% pure oxygen, respectively. For the mentioned cycle, the calculated energy penalty of oxygen production was 0.235 MWh/kgO2 for the lower purity value. However, for higher purity namely 99.5%, the energy penalty of oxygen production for the thermodynamic cycle including the bleed and excluding the bleed was indicated 0.346 and 0.347 MWh/kgO2, respectively. Additionally, the analysis of the oxygen purity impact on the carbon dioxide purity at the end of the carbon capture and storage installation shows that for the case with the bleed, CO2 purities are 93.8% and 97.6%, and excluding the bleed they are 93.8% and 97.8%, for the mentioned oxygen purities respectively. Insertion of the cryogenic oxygen production installation is required as the considered gas power plant uses oxy-combustion to facilitate carbon capture and storage method.

The wind tunnel with variable Mach numbers controlled by a single jack is highly desired in the aerospace, automobile and building industry due to its superior controllability and working range. Decreasing the temperature of a test gas is an efficient and economical approach to achieving higher Reynolds numbers that accommodate all working statuses of test subjects, which however, brings new challenges to the wind tunnel design nowadays. This paper proposes a new design concept of a single-jack variable Mach number nozzle based on its particular cryogenic characteristics, as the nozzle is the core structure to achieve variable Mach numbers. The contours of the nozzle under different Reynolds numbers and Mach numbers are modeled and solved by an incomplete elliptic integral, followed by modification with cryogenic characteristics. A 0.3-m cryogenic wind tunnel is utilized as a validation platform for the nozzle design, resulting in designed contours being in line with the measured contours. Moreover, the root means square (RMS) deviations of Mach number 1.3 at the core position are controlled within 0.011 in low and high temperatures, which surpasses the other existing wind tunnels.

The article discusses the valuation of ecosystem services in connection with the economic activity of the Russian Federation in the Arctic zone. It also considers the categories of ecosystem services in general and the assessment of ecosystem services in the Arctic in particular. The article also considers types of negative impacts on the Arctic ecosystems, their assessment, and investment risks existing in ecosystem services. It is shown that the application of the methodology and ecosystem services contributes to the adequate assessment and creation of a hierarchical classification of “usefulness” and “benefits” for society derived from the existence, use, and non-use of ecosystems. The concept of Arctic ecosystem services consists of three components: identification, monetisation, and ecological risk assessment. Identification, classification, and initial assessment, mainly at the qualitative level, allow us to determine and classify services for further improvement of life quality and regulation of socio-economic effects of environmental changes. Quantitative assessment is related to the identification of the degree of ecosystem service amenability. The example of the Arctic ecosystems shows that the possibility to assess and the accuracy of the assessment can be quite different and largely depends on the type of service. The analysis of possible ecosystem services and their relationship with the quality of life in the Russian Arctic indicates significant investment risks.

In this work, thermo-mechanically treated 42CrMo steel was subjected to cryogenic treatment conducted by means of orthogonal design method, followed by low-temperature tempering to investigate the effect of different parameters of cryogenic treatment on wear resistance of 42CrMo steel and to optimize parameters of cryogenic treatment for improving wear resistance. The results of hardness test and wear test show that cryogenic treatment significantly improves wear resistance with marginal changes in coefficient of friction and hardness. Specifically, cryogenic temperature has the largest impact on wear resistance of 42CrMo steel, holding time has medium impact, and the parameter of treatment cycles has the least impact. The optimum parameters of cryogenic treatment are -196°C for 12 hours with one cycle for improving wear resistance. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis indicate that marginal changes in hardness and coefficient of friction may be owing to little amount of transformation of retained austenite, and the significant influence of cryogenic treatment on improving wear resistance of 42CrMo steel can be mainly attributed to segregation of carbon atoms promoted by cryogenic treatment resulting in more precipitation of carbides in subsequent tempering.

The paper presents the effect of deep cryogenic treatment time on micromechanical and tribological properties of magnesium alloys, WE43 and WE54. The alloys were subjected to deep cryogenic treatment at a liquid nitrogen temperature (-196°C) for 2 to 48h. Tribological tests were performed in a rotational and a reciprocating linear motion, and wear trace studies were performed by profilometric and microscopic measurements. The tests indicate that deep cryogenic treatment has a favourable effect on the micromechanical, mechanical and tribological parameters of the two investigated alloys. It has also been shown that sub-zero treatment time significantly impacts the cryogenic treatment result. Among other things, there was a nearly 10% increase in hardness, Young's modulus, and a 35% reduction in tribological volumetric wear resulting from the improvement in mechanical properties, as well as a 2-fold reduction in linear wear with an increase in sub-zero treatment time relative to the material in its as-delivered state. Deep cryogenic treatment with appropriately selected sub-zero treatment time allows for improving the service life of magnesium alloys with rare earth metals.
W artykule przedstawiono wpływ czasu głębokiej obróbki kriogenicznej na właściwości mikromechaniczne oraz tribologiczne stopów magnezu WE43 i WE54. Stopy poddano głębokiej obróbce kriogenicznej w temperaturze ciekłego azotu (-196°C) w czasie od 2 do 48 h. Testy tribologiczne wykonano w ruchu obrotowym oraz w ruchu posuwisto-zwrotnym liniowym. Badania śladów zużycia wykonano za pomocą pomiarów profilografometrycznych oraz mikroskopowych. Przeprowadzone testy wskazują, że głęboka obróbka kriogeniczna wpływa korzystnie na parametry mikromechaniczne, mechaniczne i tribologiczne obu badanych stopów. Wykazano również, że istotne znaczenie na efekt obróbki kriogenicznej ma czas wymrażania. Stwierdzono między innymi blisko 10% wzrost twardości modułu Younga oraz wynikające z poprawy właściwości mechanicznych – 35% ograniczenie zużycia tribologicznego objętościowego i 2-krotne obniżenie zużycia liniowego wraz ze wzrostem czasu wymrażania w stosunku do materiału w stanie dostawy. Głęboka obróbka kriogeniczna o odpowiednio dobranym czasie wymrażania pozwala na poprawę trwałości eksploatacyjnej stopów magnezu z metalami ziem rzadkich.

On the basis of high-resolution LiDAR data, collected at the surface of alkaline fens in the Chełm Hills area (Lublin chalkland, East Poland), structures deviating from the natural paludification processes related to the development of fens (“ghost structures”) were identified. At each of the sites analysed, field verification by means of drillhole cores indicates an indirect relationship between the modern topography of the peatlands and the morphology of their substratum, related to periglacial processes. Three categories of periglacial structure were recognized in the chalk bedrock: (1) solifluction sheets, lobes and terraces; (2) pingo-type structures (ramparted depressions, lithalsas); and (3) relict cryogenic mounds. A conceptual model of the development of slope and peatland relief in the Lublin chalkland during the Late Glacial and Holocene was prepared on the basis of the results obtained. The results indicate the role of the periglacially transformed chalk substratum in the development of alkaline fens in the chalklands, which rarely was considered in previous studies.

The objective of the present study is to optimize multiple process parameters in turning for achieving minimum chip-tool interface temperature, surface roughness and specific cutting energy by using numerical models. The proposed optimization models are offline conventional methods, namely hybrid Taguchi-GRA-PCA and Taguchi integrated modified weighted TOPSIS. For evaluating the effects of input process parameters both models use ANOVA as a supplementary tool. Moreover, simple linear regression analysis has been performed for establishing mathematical relationship between input factors and responses. A total of eighteen experiments have been conducted in dry and cryogenic cooling conditions based on Taguchi L18 orthogonal array. The optimization results achieved by hybrid Taguchi-GRA-PCA and modified weighted TOPSIS manifest that turning at a cutting speed of 144 m/min and a feed rate of 0.16 mm/rev in cryogenic cooling condition optimizes the multi-responses concurrently. The prediction accuracy of the modified weighted TOPSIS method is found better than hybrid Taguchi-GRA-PCA using regression analysis.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported by the sea-ships with relatively low pressure (0.13–0.14 MPa) and very low temperature (about 100 K) in cryo-containers. Liquid phase, and the low temperature of the medium is connected with its high exergy. LNG receives this exergy during the liquefaction and is related with energy consumption in this process. When the LNG is evaporated in atmospheric regasifiers (what takes place in many on-shore terminals as well as in local regasifier stations) the cryogenic exergy is totally lost. fortunately, there are a lot of installations dedicated for exergy recovery during LNG regasification. These are mainly used for the production of electricity, but there are also rare examples of utilization of the LNG cryogenic exergy for other tasks, for example it is utilized in the fruit lyophilization process. In the paper installations based on the Brayton cycle gas turbine are investigated, in the form of systems with inlet air cooling, liquid phase injection, exhaust gas based LNG evaporation and mirror gas turbine systems. The mirror gas turbine system are found most exegetically effective, while the exhaust gas heated systems the most practical in terms of own LNG consumption.

Quality of electric current delivered to the magnets of a particle accelerator is essential for safety and reliability of its operation. Even small discrepancies strongly affect the properties of particle beams. One of the sources of the disturbances is the appearance of induced currents caused by the electromagnetic interactions between the elements of the machine. In this paper the calculations of induced currents in by-pass lines of a SIS100 particle accelerator are presented. In order to find the values of the currents the self-inductances and mutual inductances of the by-pass lines are found. Due to the complex geometry of the line, especially of Ω-shaped dilatations, the numerical approach was employed. The calculations show that the size of induced currents increases with the distance between the cables in an individual bus-bar. The maximum discrepancy of the magnetic field in a dipole magnet is found to be 7.7 μT. The decrease of distance between the cables allows one to obtain a discrepancy of 1.2 μT.

CO2 emission from combustion fossil fuels is considered as the primary factor in the global warming. Different methods for separation CO2 from combustion flue gases are extensively used across the world. The aim of this study is to analyze the most important technological solutions of CO2 separation. For this reason chemical absorption, physical absorption, adsorption approach, membrane filtration and cryogenic process were researched. Concluding, selection of the right method for carbon dioxide capture separation is a complex issue and a range of technological and economic factors should be taken into consideration prior to application on the industrial scale.
Emisja CO2 do atmosfery pochodząca ze spalania paliw kopalnych jest uważana za główny czynnik globalnego ocieplenia. Różne metody oddzielania CO2 od gazów spalinowych są szeroko stosowane na ca-łym świecie. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza najważniejszych technologicznych rozwiązań separacji CO2. W tym celu przeanalizowano następujące metody: absorpcja chemiczna, absorpcja fizyczna, adsorpcja, filtracja membranowa i proces kriogeniczny. Podsumowując, wybór właściwej metody separacji dwutlenku węgla pod kątem wychwytu dwutlenku węgla jest złożonym zagadnieniem, a przed zastosowaniem na skalę przemysłową należy wziąć pod uwagę szereg czynników, w tym technologiczne i ekonomiczne.

This work depicts the effects of deep cryogenically treated high-speed steel on machining. In recent research, cryogenic treatment has been acknowledged for improving the life or performance of tool materials. Hence, tool materials such as the molybdenum-based high-speed tool steel are frequently used in the industry at present. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the tool performance in machining; the present research used medium carbon steel (AISI 1045) under dry turning based on the L9 orthogonal array. The effect of untreated and deep cryogenically treated tools on the turning of medium carbon steel is analyzed using the multi-input-multi-output fuzzy inference system with the Taguchi approach. The cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut were the selected process parameters with an effect on surface roughness and the cutting tool edge temperature was also observed. The results reveal that surface roughness decreases and cutting tool edge temperature increases on increasing the cutting speed. This is followed by the feed rate and depth of cut. The deep cryogenically treated tool caused a reduction in surface roughness of about 11% while the cutting tool edge temperature reduction was about 23.76% higher than for an untreated tool. It was thus proved that the deep cryogenically treated tool achieved better performance on selected levels of the turning parameters.

Laser cladding of Co-based metallic powder at cryogenic conditions

Opis:
Purpose: of this paper was demonstration a novel technique of laser cladding by experimentally composed Co-based metallic powder and forced cooling of the substrate by liquid nitrogen under cryogenic conditions, at the temperature -190°C, for producing clad layers with enhanced microstructure characteristic and properties. Design/methodology/approach: Technological tests of laser cladding were conducted by means of a high power fibre laser HPFL with maximum output power 3.0 kW, and six-axis robot. The experimental Co-based powder was composed for providing high abrasive wear resistance, high resistance for impact load, and also for corrosion resistance at elevated temperature. The unique and novel technique of forced cooling of the substrate was provided by immersing the specimens in the liquid nitrogen bath. The three coaxial nozzle head was designed and custom made to provide precise deposition of the powder delivered into the laser beam irradiation region. The scope of the study included tests of conventional laser cladding at free cooling in ambient air in a wide range of processing parameters, and also trials of laser cladding under cryogenic conditions. The test clad layers produced by conventional laser cladding and by the novel technique of laser powder deposition under cryogenic conditions were investigated and compared. Findings: The obtained results indicate that the novel technique of forced cooling the substrate by liquid nitrogen bath provides lower penetration depth, as well as low dilution of the clad, and also provides higher hardness of the clads. Additionally, it is possible shaping the geometry of the individual bead, providing high reinforcement and low width. Research limitations/implications: The presented results are based just on preliminary test of the novel technique of laser cladding under cryogenic conditions. Therefore, further study and detailed analyse of the influence of the cooling rate on the quality, microstructure, and properties of the deposited coatings are required. Practical implications: The study is focused on practical application of the novel technique for manufacturing of wear resistance coatings characterised with enhanced performance compared to conventional range of application of the laser cladding. Originality/value: Novel technique of laser cladding at forced cooling under cryogenic conditions was demonstrated. The powder used for cladding trials was experimentally composed (not commercially available). The experimental stand custom made was used with custom made powder feeding rate, and also with custom made coaxial nozzle head.

W artykule przedstawiono zarys projektów SMOK prowadzonych w PGNiG SA, dotyczących możliwości wykorzystania przepływomierzy Coriolisa do pomiarów rozliczeniowych LNG w obszarze LNG małej skali. Z uwagi na fakt, że projekty SMOK w PGNiG dotyczą mediów kriogenicznych, w szczególności obszaru LNG małej skali, w artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań metrologicznych instalacji SMOK – zarówno z wykorzystaniem wody, jak i LNG. Zaproponowano sposób postępowania odnośnie do możliwości zapewnienia nadzoru metrologicznego dla instalacji SMOK. Obecnie ogólnoświatowy problem stanowi weryfikacja wskazań przepływomierzy dla cieczy kriogenicznych, ponieważ brak jest na świecie uznanych i specjalistycznych stanowisk referencyjnych do tego typu porównań. W projektach SMOK wykorzystano istniejącą infrastrukturę kriogeniczną w Oddziale PGNiG w Odolanowie, gdzie również produkuje się LNG, do weryfikacji wskazań przepływomierzy Coriolisa w zastosowaniach do pomiarów przepływu LNG. W tym celu połączono statyczne metody wagowe z użyciem dużych i dokładnych wag pomostowych nadzorowanych od strony metrologicznej przez krajową administrację miar z bezpośrednimi metodami dynamicznymi do pomiarów cieczy kriogenicznych w przepływie. Takie stanowisko badawcze jest pierwszym oficjalnym stanowiskiem krajowym i prawdopodobnie drugim w świecie. Obecnie jedynie laboratorium CEESI w stanie Kolorado w USA potwierdziło posiadanie tego typu stanowiska kriogenicznego, opartego na ciekłym azocie i przeznaczonego do weryfikacji komercyjnych. Niepewność pomiarów stanowiska CEESI jest jednak wyższa niż w przypadku instalacji w PGNiG SA w Odolanowie, stworzonej w ramach badań w projektach SMOK. W prezentowanym artykule zaproponowano praktyczne podejście do wzorcowań przepływomierzy Coriolisa dla cieczy kriogenicznych z wykorzystaniem wody i mediów kriogenicznych. Zaproponowano sposób nadzoru metrologicznego przepływomierzy do cieczy kriogenicznych zarówno dla etapu aktualnego – określonego jako etap przejściowy – jak i w przyszłości, gdy powstaną specja- listyczne stanowiska referencyjne oparte na cieczach kriogenicznych. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań metrologicznych instalacji SMOK – zarówno z wykorzystaniem wody, jak i LNG.
The article presents an outline of the SMOK projects conducted in PGNiG SA, regarding the possibility of using Coriolis flowmeters for small scale LNG custody transfer. Due to the fact that the SMOK projects in PGNiG concern cryogenic media, in particular small scale LNG, the article presents the results of metrological tests of the SMOK installation, both with the use of water and LNG. The method of dealing with the possibility of providing metrological supervision for the SMOK installation has been proposed. Currently, the global problem is the verification of flowmeter indications for cryogenic liquids because there are no recognized and dedicated reference installations in the world for such comparisons. In the SMOK projects, existing cryogenic infrastructure at the PGNiG Branch in Odolanów was used, where LNG is also produced, for the verification of Coriolis flowmeters in applications for LNG flow measurements. Because of this, static weighing methods were combined using a large and accurate balance bridge, monitored from the metrological point of view by the national administration of measures with direct dynamic methods for measuring cryogenic liquids in the flow. Such kind of research installation is the first official national verification installation and probably the second in the world. At present, only the CEESi laboratory in Colorado in the US has confirmed the possession of a cryogenic installation of this type, based on liquid nitrogen and intended for commercial verifications. However, the uncertainty of the CEESi installation is higher than for the installation at PGNiG SA in Odolanów, created as part of research under the SMOK projects. The paper presents a practical approach to the calibration of Coriolis flowmeters for cryogenic liquids using water and cryogenic media. A method of metrological supervision of flow meters for cryogenic liquids was proposed for both the current stage – defined as a transitional stage – and for the future when dedicated reference installations based on cryogenic liquids will be created. The article presents the results of metrological tests of the SMOK installation, both with the use of water and LNG.
