Opis:
The 1335 foundation (chartering) of Kazimierz, the town situated beside Cracow, was a difficult venture as a group of settlers had to be brought from another strong urban centre. Owing to the memory of the rebellion led by alderman (vogt) Albert and due to the political situation, Casimir III the Great most probably sought assistance from the town of Sandomierz in an attempt to find an optimum solution. This supposition is confirmed by the fact that the king favoured the town after 1335 and, even more importantly, that the foundation charter and one of the first documents for the new commune were issued at Sandomierz. A close relationship between Sandomierz and Kazimierz is observable for the subsequent years.

Opis:
The paper presents the most important events in the history of Cracow electrification and the role played by Cracow electricians. In 1880 on the Market Square in Cracow the "dynamo-electric machine" was used for the first time, generating electric current, to supply arc lamps. The Municipal Theater in Krakow, which was established in 1893, was supply of power by a theatrical power plant, which served its purpose until 1905. That year, the theater was connected to the newly established Municipal Power Plant. Earlier, however, the present district of Krakow - Podgórze already had its own power station operating since 1900, and also Krakow trams had their own power station since 1901. At the end of the 19th, their own small power plants also had some Cracow institutions and companies. Around 1904 Cracovian electricians connected with Cracow power plants joined the Cracow Technical Society and in 1914 formally established the Electrotechnical Section. This section existed until 1920 when the Cracow Circle of Polish Electrical Engineers Association was established, and the first president of the Circle (renamed in 1928 to the Branch) was elected Col. Stanislaw Bieliński. By 1939, the next presidents were: Maryan Porębski, Henryk Dubeltowicz, Leonard Zglinski, Tadeusz Moskalewski, Jan Szmidt.
W pracy przedstawiono ważniejsze wydarzenia z historii elektryki krakowskiej i rolę jaką w nich odegrali krakowscy elektrycy. W tymże roku teatr został podłączony do nowopowstałej Elektrowni Miejskiej. Wcześniej jednak obecna dzielnica Krakowa - Podgórze miała już swoją elektrownię działającą od roku 1900, a również krakowskie tramwaje posiadały własną elektrownię od roku 1901, Pod koniec XIX w własne małe elektrownie posiadały też niektóre instytucje i firmy krakowskie. Około 1904 roku krakowscy elektrycy związani z krakowskimi elektrowniami, włączyli się w działalność Krakowskiego Towarzystwa Technicznego, a w 1914 r. formalnie założyli Sekcję Elektrotechniczną. Sekcja ta istniała do 1920 roku, kiedy to utworzono Koło Krakowskie Stowarzyszenia Elektryków Polskich, a na pierwszego prezesa Koła (przemianowanego w 1928 roku na Oddział), został wybrany kol. Stanisław Bieliński. Do roku 1939 kolejnymi prezesami byli: Maryan Porębski, Henryk Dubeltowicz, Leonard Zgliński, Tadeusz Moskalewski, Jan Szmidt.

The article is a contribution to the exploration of history of Polish musical culture of the Renaissance and the Baroque period. Recognition of elementary forms of social organisation leads to understanding of the prevailing social and economical relations in those times. This article is one of the first in this topic, therefore it starts with very basic issues. A musicians guild existed in Cracow from 16th to 18th century. The article presents its history and organisation on the basis of statutes and municipal documents analysis. Simultaneously, it raises questions about circumstances of its creation and termination, welded duties and repertoire. The author questions the character of discussed association, considering to what extent it was a guild and a confraternity. The aim of the publication is to present to the reader a coherent picture of the guild, which could provide a starting point for further research.

Opis:
This article discusses Joseph Conrad’s links with Cracow, the historic capital of Poland and a major centre of Polish culture. Conrad fi rst came to Cracow in February 1869, accompanied by his father Apollo Korzeniowski, who - after several years of exile in northern Russia - had become gravely ill. Conrad visited the city a second time in the summer of 1914, having accepted an invitation from the young Polish politician Józef Hieronim Retinger, and (not without some diffi culty) eventually managed to get himself and his family safely back to Britain after the outbreak of World War I. Both of these sojourns in Cracow played an important role in Conrad’s life - and, one might say, in his creative work as a writer. One of the most vivid memories of his fi rst stay in Cracow was the hero’s funeral given to his father, who had been a victim of tsarist oppression. It was from Cracow that the young Conrad set out for France in order to take up a maritime career in Marseilles. During his second stay in Cracow (and Zakopane) Conrad made the acquaintance of many members of the Polish intellectual elite and took the decision to become actively involved in the cause of Polish independence.

Opis:
In 1996-1997 on the initiative of the Municipal Office of the City of Kraków the Institute of Landscape Architecture of Cracow University of Technology developed a conception for shaping the city's environmental system in accordance with current needs and conditions. The project's underlying idea is to use the hydro-graphical network as the basis for laying out new green areas called river parks. There are four basic arguments for adopting this approach: - size and shape of the city's territory and structure of residential areas; - possibility of connecting river parks with the system of protected landscape surrounding the city; - existing unbuilt areas along the Vistula River and its tributaries within city boundaries; - possibility to combine the river parks project with the flood protection programme with beneficial effects for the economic development of areas along the river and boating. A structure plan should be developed to co-ordinate the programme that would necessarily comprise many stages, similar to those developed for special economic zones. The river parks would need an appropriate legal protection to guarantee their status. As a result, the river parks would become a complex system of water and green areas, stimulating the city's harmonious growth.

Jan Salamucha, and Jan Franciszek Drewnowski. They tried to apply the methods of modern formal/mathematical logic to philosophical and theological problems. In particular, they attempted to modernise contemporary Thomism (the trend which was then prevailing) by employing logical tools. The influence of Jan Łukasiewicz, the co-founder of the Warsaw School of Logic will be also discussed.

The phenomenon of the metropolization belongs to the most important development processes in the contemporary world. It can be observed also in the Cracow Urban Functional Area. The cohesion policy of the European Union renders assistance to Polish cities in order to strengthen their capabilities to deal with that phenomenon. The relevant new development instrument is the Integrated Territorial Investment, implemented in the current programming period of the EU. The present paper is an example of the on-going participant observation, related to the author’s contribution in the preparation of the Cracow Development Strategy and also of the Strategy of Integrated Territorial Investment for the Cracow Urban Functional Area. The conclusions describe the current understanding of the development processes in big Polish cities in the context of the metropolization.

The contemporary museum debate developing in the context of the need to change the museum definition carried out in ICOM is a debate on the role and responsibility of museums. Museums with a burden of tradition are faced with the challenge to meet contemporary contexts and expectations, while newly-established museums can enter the stage fully aware of the historical contexts, with an agenda reflecting contemporary tasks, and they can chart new perspectives from the very beginning. The case study in the paper focuses on a museum which begins its operation at the time of a heated debate on the new tasks of museums in social life: the Toy Museum in Cracow. The paper tackles several motifs of a very extensive issue, namely museums’ responsibility: who and what should museums show responsibility to? Does responsibility mean presence in the public debate and museum activism? The operation formula of the Toy Museum shows the possible way for private collectors: instead of aspiring to create a traditional place for the collection presentation, they can see how to activate the collection where the supreme goal is not just making the collection available to the public, but making it impact the museum’s environment, which could be caused by that presentation and other programmatic actions connected with the collection.

The article aims at showing in a new light the confessional situation of the University of Cracow in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, using sources omitted in previous research into the topic and thanks to a more detailed analysis of the sources used by other scholars (e.g., Acta rectoralia, university conclusions, rectors’ and professors’ diaries). The Academy of Cracow (as it was called then) was a Catholic institution, thus portraying the attitude of the university’s authorities to non-Catholics in a period of confessional struggle in Cracow and in the Commonwealth seemed promising. Another point was to analyse the possibilities for non-Catholics to function within the walls of the University in different periods of time, as well as to describe the most important events and regulations, which influenced the University’s policy. The author also tried to bring to light the subsequent stages of administrative exclusion (on various levels) of non-Catholic students. However, the contacts of the Academy with religious minorities in Cracow is a matter so complex, that it remained beyond the scope of the article.

Alabaster is a rock with low hardness, high coherence, fine-crystalline development and forms an optically “warm” surface when polished. It has been used as a sculpting, decorative and architectonic stone, often by civilizations of the Mediterranean Sea Basin. Alabaster in the architecture and sculpture of Kraków is mainly from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) and comes from deposits within the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin, chiefly along its northern margin in the “Podolia rim”. It was quarried around the mid-part of the Dnister River and its tributaries, from Lviv (Lwów) to Khotyn (Chocim), and mostly at Zhuravno (Żurawno). The alabaster quarried here was called Ruthenian, Polish, or Lvov “marble”. Small quarries were also located at the front of the Carpathian overthrust, including the known deposit at Łopuszka Wielka. The Miocene alabaster has shades of white, yellow, green, brown, usually with differing spots or veins; often the rock is brecciated and partly semi-transparent. Alabaster has been quarried in the Polish Republic since the 16th century, peaking (also in finished stone products) between the world wars. The authors present examples of alabaster usage in ecclesiastical edifices of Kraków, for instance in the Wawel Cathedral, St. Mary’s Church, the churches of Dominican, Carmelite and Missionary clergy, and also in some secular buildings, e.g. the Jagiellonian Library.

Like the entire Diocese of Vilnius, the Cathedral Chapter of Vilnius drew considerably from the experience of the ecclesiastical environment of the Diocese of Cracow, which had already existed for four centuries when the Vilnius Chapter began and was establishing and organizing its own institutions and structures. Although the Diocese of Vilnius had remained part of the organizational structures of the ecclesial province of Gniezno from the beginning of the fifteenth century, it looked to Wawel and not to Wzgórze Lecha’s example. From the fourteenth century onward, Vilnius and Cracow were the capital cities of the Polish-Lithuanian state. For this reason, it was fitting that both of the dioceses, including their cathedral chapters, were organized, looked, and functioned similarly. When the local Church was being established and organized in Lithuania, Cracow naturally served as a model for Vilnius because the local church in Cracow had already existed for more than four centuries and was, therefore, more organized, dynamic, and greatly exposed to the world in every respect than the ecclesiastical environment of Gniezno. This was also due to the fact that the Diocese of Cracow was at the center of royal power: it supported the throne of the Commonwealth directly; it sanctioned the court’s actions; it provided the monarch with expert and intellectual help necessary to conduct internal politics and engage in diplomacy. It is also significant that the person responsible for establishing the Church in Lithuania was, in fact, Lithuanian—King Władysław II Jagiełło was the first Jagiellonian to ascend the Polish throne. His successors continued his policies in the religious realm in Lithuania. It is not surprising, therefore, the Jagiełłoes were solicitous to ensure that Vilnius enjoyed the proper place in the hierarchy of Polish-Lithuanian dioceses under their jurisdiction in accordance with the belief that “Vilnius annot stand out from Cracow.” The Lithuanian King Władysław II Jagiełło provided materially for the Church in Vilnius, and he ensured that the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had the proper position within the structures of the Polish-Lithuanian state, which has becoming increasingly more integrated. Although the Diocese of Vilnius drew from the Diocese of Cracow’s example, it did not blindly imitate it. After it had been established and organized, the Vilnius Cathedral Chapter was able to develop its own models, unique identity, and manner of functioning as a completely self-sufficient corporation that no longer needed to refer so strongly to the model of Cracow.

A survey of the publications shows that research into the history of the Cracow press boomed after World War II. As scores of articles, monographs and reports were published, the focus of interest was extended from the old grounds of the early press history, the 19th century and the Republic of Cracow, or the press of the Nazi occupation period to the new fields of the press history of the interwar years 1918–1939 as well as the post-1945 and post-1989 periods

Opis:
The article analyses the family ties of the Cracow burghers with the secular clergy of the city in the fourteenth century, documented in sources. It has been demonstrated that the clergy who came from the Cracow burghers (cathedral canons, vicars, collegiate canons, parsons and priests, altarists and clerics) were a group consisted of 58 people. On their way to Church positions, they encountered various difficulties determined by the personal policy of the bishops of Cracow, the right of patronage, and the policy of noble and mighty families. There are also data on the education of the clergy of Cracow origin and their informal connections with the Church presented.

Opis:
The article discusses the participation of Italians in the town council and the judicial bench being local government authorities of the city of Cracow in the early modern period. As many as seventy-four Italians (this standing for 14 per cent of all the councillors and 8 per cent assessors or lay judges) are identifiable for the period in question; nineteen of them concluded their careers with the office of assessors, never getting ranked to councillor. While most of them were merchants by profession, as many as five councillors held a doctor’s degree. Italians were the most influential ethnic group in the council in the latter half of the seventeenth century and in the former half of the eighteenth, when in certain years the council-in-office, elected annually and consisting of eight members, featured as many as four Italians at the same time. Similarly, a considerable share of Italians in the judicial bench (almost 50 per cent) is observed for the first half of the eighteenth century; the detailed statistics is featured in the tables appended. Over 20 per cent of the families that accepted the municipal law in the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries obtained at least one of these offices. The share of Italians in Cracow’s local-government administration at that time, incommensurate with the actual size of local Italian population, is explainable by their larger interest in pursuing municipal career opportunities. In the medieval period, and even under the reign of Queen Bona Sforza, a number of Italians demonstrated different economic strategies. They satisfied themselves with the royal privilege of servitoriate, counted on fast moneymaking and expected to return home sooner or later. In the later years, most of the Cracow-based Italians were well assimilated and preferred to settle down in the city.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to show the strategies of dealing with the pandemic circumstances chosen by three of the city’s festivals: EtnoKraków/Crossroads, Sacrum Profanum, and Unsound. Emerging from their diverse approaches is a new hybrid festival formula, which brings with it brand new challenges. These include: new models of interaction between organisers, artists, and audiences; reorganisation of festival space; new patterns of audience accessibility and new forms of exclusion/openness; opportunities and barriers for (virtual) cultural exchange; and finally, a recalibration and blurring of the public and private dimensions brought about by the new types of festival experience. Indeed, it could even be argued that the live event sector is facing significant change in the very concept of “liveness”. The analysis is based both on existing data concerning processes of music festival production and consumption (press articles, reviews, and reports) and semi-structured interviews with artistic directors, managers and producers of the selected festivals, held in 2020/2021.

Opis:
One of the participants of the 1863 uprising, Henryk Bukowski, who later emigrated and settled down in Sweden, was well-known not only to the Polish expatriate community as a great antiquarian. H. Bukowski is also famous for his great work for the foundation, patronizing and donating the Polish National Museum in Rapperswil, which was not his sole activity. Being a great bibliophile, on every possible occasion he presented many valuable books to different libraries and other institutions in exile and in the country as well. It is known that in the years 1887-1890 The Academy of Science in Cracow received a collection of approximately six hundred books, accompanied by a catalogue prepared by Bukowski himself. It is worth mentioning that the Jagiellonian Library was given several dozen books, important for the Polish culture, and several hundred brochures. Also, the National Museum in Cracow has a big collection of artefacts given by the collector from Sweden. None of those collections have been explored before. The article is based on the correspondence between Bukowski and the directors of all three institutions in Cracow donated by the Swedish antiquarian .

Opis:
The paper introduces a more elaborate study of the influence of synoptic situations on cloud cover. The source of data were daily observations made at the meteorological station of the Department of Oimatology of IG UJ in Kraków from 1971 to 1995 and the calendar of synoptic situations by T. Niedźwiedź. The presented method shows the role of local conditions in creating nephological relations (visible in domination of convection over circulation in the warm season), it is useful in determining the probability of occurrence of a given cloud at a particular circulation and in analysing cloud patterns characteristic for different synoptic situations.

Opis:
The Cracow Masonic Lodge „Przesąd Zwyciężony” („Prejudice Conquered”) has experienced a lot of ups and downs in the past. Perhaps its greatest failure would be its banning in 1822. This paper analyses the Minute-Book of the Lodge in terms of evident references to legal acts that outlawed freemasonry across the territories under Russian Empire. The content of these archives shows that despite a considerable degree of autonomy the Republic of Cracow had, the administrative actions of the neighbouring Powers seriously inter-fered the citizens’ lives. The documents preserved certainly are an admirable example of chronicle writings of those days. Furthermore, they provide some clues on the complexity of factors that put an end to Masonic activity in Cra-cow for 113 years.
