The start of the COVID-19 virus epidemic is having an impact on radical changes in the labor market. The difficult economic situation is a challenge for employers, candidates and recruiters. In recent months, the recruitment market has seen a decline in the work forces, redundancy, and a reduction in salaries. As a result of this situation, some workplaces have used the remote work model. The possibility of remote work can be a good solution for many employees, but in some cases, it can be a significant inconvenience, especially for employees who have underage children and perform their work duties at home. Aim of the article is present positive and negative aspects of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research presented in the article was aimed at assessing changes in working conditions and starting remote work. The positive effects of changes in workplaces include saving time, adjusting work to personal needs, and work-life balance. The disadvantages of taking up remote work include lack of direct contact with co-workers, blurring the boundaries between private and professional life, maintaining a constant presence at work, lack of social ties and isolation were identified as the most significant obstacles to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the negative aspects of working remotely, the respondents more often declared their willingness to work remotely also after the end of the pandemic.

Opis:
This study combines a critical literature review and an opinion paper. The paper discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Leadership, highlighting the rise of virtual Leadership as a contemporary leadership style that utilizes digital technologies to manage organizational members. The authors argue that virtual Leadership can foster workplace creativity, innovation, and sustainability. However, challenges are associated with this new leadership style, particularly regarding managing vulnerable employee categories and addressing mental health issues in remote working populations. The paper raises important research questions, including the effectiveness of virtual Leadership during and after the COVID-19 crisis, the impact of COVID-19-induced changes in training programs on accessibility, efficiency, and efficacy, and the challenges faced by authoritarian or bossy leaders in motivating their workers in virtual environments. The analysis also emphasizes the need for Human Resources (HR) professionals to create novel systems for evaluating and assessing performance and for occupational health staff to be trained to recognize mental health issues in remote working populations and offer online advice and therapy.

Opis:
In a letter published on March 30, 2021, 24 world leaders have called for global solidarity in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. This commitment to act in solidarity with low-income countries however was won under duress, and it was in part at least self-serving. Can this still be called solidarity? On the basis of a functional view on solidarity the paper argues that states can indeed act in solidarity, if they accept costs to assist others with whom they recognize similarity in a relevant respect. States can act in solidarity, or they can fail to act in solidarity, also in situations of duress and if solidary acts also serve their own interests. The paper concludes that if this is true for the Covid-19 pandemic it is also true for the climate crisis, where damage of even much bigger dimensions are to be prevented. Also in regard to anthropogenic global heating, nobody is safe until everyone is safe.

The limitations and new safety restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 had a strong impact on the functioning of numerous manufacturing companies. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among employees of manufacturing companies. A preliminary comparison of the production efficiency (and volume) in terms of the size of enterprises was made – results obtained for micro, small and medium entrprise, as well as for large production enterprise. On the basis of the presented results, it was unequivocally stated that it was much easier for micro and small enterprises to adapt to the introduced changes. They easily expanded the range of products and thus recorded a slight increase in production. Large enterprises, due to the narrow scope of their operations, unfortunately recorded a significant decrease in production – which may also be caused by the discontinuity of the supply chain.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic has been compared to world wars or other tragic events in terms of the death toll it has taken and huge economic losses it has caused. It is not a finished process, so it is difficult to predict the scale of its impact. According to IMF estimates, the contraction of the world economy will be much greater than in the years of the financial crisis of 2008–2009. The negative effects in different countries may depend on the severity and extent of the applied lock-down or interventions undertaken by governments. Changes taking place in various sectors of the economy are of a different nature. The effects of the pandemic can be also seen in the insurance segment. The aim of this article is to find answers to the following research questions: To what extent did the COVID-19 pandemic affect the situation on the insurance market? In which areas are its consequences particularly visible? What kind of opportunities and threats does the pandemic bring from the perspective of the insurance market? Methodology. The analysis used available scientific publications, reports prepared by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority, Polish Insurance Association and entities conducting brokerage activities or selected consulting companies. The result of the research. In a few days, in March 2020, a real revolution took place on the insurance market. The insurers faced the need to introduce completely remote customer service. They also had to launch new tools, which in many cases were still in the testing phase and which they did not have the opportunity to use on a large scale. With the onset of the pandemic, they were quickly implemented. It was related to additional funds, huge commitment and discipline of all employees, liquidators, agents, sales departments, and administration. Consequent on this, clients gained full access to all services and insurance products, without leaving home. On the other hand, pandemic has led to the significant changes within the demand for the insurance services and customers’ expectations, but also to growing scale of damages and compensation paid to the clients leading to the higher insurance premiums.

Purpose: Managing a pandemic in individual countries is a concern not only of governments but also of WHO and the entire international community. The pandemic knows no bounds. In this context, India is a special country - with a huge population and a very large diversity of cultural, geographic, economic, poverty levels, and pandemic management methods. In this work, we try to assess the sum of the impact of these factors on the state of the epidemic by creating a ranking of Indian states from the least to the most endangered. Design/methodology/approach: As a method of creating such a ranking, we take into account two very, in our opinion, objective variables - the number of deaths and the number of vaccinations per million inhabitants of the region. In order not to make the usually controversial ascribing of weights to these factors, we relate them to the selected reference region - here to the capital city - Delhi. We apply a logical principle - the more vaccinations, the better and the more deaths - the worse. Findings: The results are rather surprising. Many small regions are safe regions, such as Andaman, Tripura or Sikkim, many large or wealthy states are at the end of this ranking, such as Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. What was found in the course of the work? This will refer to analysis, discussion, or results. Originality/value: The method enables an indirect assessment of the quality of pandemic management in a given region of the country. It can be used for any country or even a group of countries or a continent. According to this criterion, the best state/region is intuitively the safest for residents. A small number of deaths and a large number of vaccinations may positively indicate the state of public health and good management of the fight against the pandemic by local and/or central authorities.

In the years 2021–2022, world inflation has drastically increased. The analyses of the main characteristics of the 2007–2009 financial crisis and of the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as of the rise in total debt of the non-financial sector suggest that the growth in inflation was triggered by excessive debt growth of the government sector in 2020–2021. In that period, the main goal of the debt growth of the government sector was to finance the aid schemes limiting the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. These aid programmes were indispensable to avoid deep and long-term global economic recession, however, their value was too high to keep inflation in the world under control. The fiscal intervention of particular countries should be co-ordinated internationally, as the cumulative result of the operations undertaken by particular states might have detrimental effects globally.

The main objective of the survey is to identify changes in consumer behavior and the determinants that influenced purchasing decisions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: An interview questionnaire was used in the survey. The survey was conducted through a random selection of a sample. The electronic survey was conducted in April 2021. The questionnaire was completed by 220 people. The media were the tools to reach the respondents social networking and the survey itself was made available on the facebook.com portal, on thematic groups associating consumers of various products. The research was of a pilot nature. This limited the sample size and scope of the research. Findings: The analysis of the survey results shows that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the purchasing behavior of 76% of women and 62% of men. Surveys have shown how shopping habits have changed during the coronavirus pandemic. The respondents said they started purchasing more products online and that the frequency of shopping decreased, but they purchased more products at one go. The respondents bought only essential products and spent a larger portion of their money on protective measures than before. For 24% of women and 38% of men the pandemic had no impact on their consumer behavior. Originality/value: The analysis of the literature leads to the conclusion that there is not much research on consumer behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper is addressed to representatives of the scientific world dealing with the topic of consumer behavior and all those interested in this issue.

Purpose: The end of the first quarter of 2020 is the beginning of a new, difficult time in the functioning of transport companies, as well as the entire Polish and world economy. The appearance of Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) resulted in a number of market restrictions and a sharp decline in transport orders. Enterprises had to change the way they were managed and operated, had to adapt to a different economic reality in order to continue to prosper. The aim of the article is to define the essence of managing a transport company in the new market and economic conditions that appeared during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The research procedure included review of polish and foreign literature, analysis of legal acts, questionnaire research, analysis of the content of internal documents of transport companies, method of analysis and synthesis, case study, methods of inductive and deductive reasoning. The article presents the results of scientific research on the impact of Covid-19 on the management and decisions made in a transport company. Findings: The high level of impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the management of a transport company has been demonstrated. The factor that most influenced the management and decisions of transport companies is the decline or fear of a decline in contracts for transport services. Transport companies are afraid of the further negative effects of the pandemic, and therefore do not want to take out investment loans in order to develop the company. The article discusses the activities of transport companies and the management of a transport company in crisis conditions. Research limitations/implications: The article presents a survey carried out in Polish transport companies from the Podkarpackie and Lubelskie voivodships. Therefore, the research results concern the area of south-eastern Poland. Practical implications: The results of the research may be helpful for managers of transport companies (management decisions made) in order to limit the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their business activities. Originality/value: The presented research and conclusions provide practical guidance to managers about what decisions and actions can improve the economic condition of their transport companies in the difficult period of the Covid-19 pandemic, based on the example of the analyzed transport companies.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic restrictions limited access to religious services and forced religious organizations to move most activities online, thus amplifying the processes of mediatization. They have also brought to light the existing power relations and hierarchies among and within the Churches, among others in the context of minority-majority relations. This context opens up new avenues for research on the topics of mediatization and power relations. We argue that in order to give an accurate account of pandemic-related developments, sociology of religion would benefit from employing user-centric research perspectives and a constructivist concept of mediatization. Analyzing research done on the topic of religion and the media in Poland to date, we present the key premises of our research project deploying the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, and highlight how it may be of use to Polish sociologists of religion.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governments to take radical measures to contain the virus and protect their citizens. These included successive restrictions on social distance, which have led to closing many enterprises in various industries and dismissing their employees. Introducing restrictions has significantly weakened many countries’ economies. Stock markets have noted sharp declines. Therefore, public protection has led to severe consequences for the labour market. Attempts at defining them have been undertaken in the body of literature. However, they focus mainly on analysing selected indicators. According to the authors, it is worth analysing the correlation between the number of deaths as the variable that best reflects the disease’s severity and selected unemployment rates. It was assumed that the number of deaths is a factor significantly distinguishing the periods before and after the pandemic. Therefore, it is possible to assess the correlation between the pandemic and the labour market condition.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the impact of unprecedented fiscal measures taken in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic on fiscal transparency and to identify the role and importance of fiscal transparency in the process of recovering from the crisis. The conducted analysis proved that in the vast majority of countries around the world, the condition of public finances, measured by the deficit and public debt, has declined significantly as a result of measures taken to reduce the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. These activities and strategies contribute to the lack of fiscal transparency. Meanwhile, fiscal transparency is an ally in recovering from the crisis. Strong fiscal frameworks (including numerical rules which promote fiscal pru- dence), backed by clear communication of policy priorities and fiscal transparency can meaningfully contribute to strengthening the credibility of public finances and reduce borrowing costs. These conclusions may be particularly important for emerging mar- ket economies and low-income developing countries, which find it more difficult and more expensive to obtain return sources of financing public investments.

During the first (spring 2020) and second wave (autumn 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic, Poland was among the countries with the strictest regulation, lockdown, and national quarantine. The pandemic has significantly influenced the situation of enterprises, especially for immigrants. The main aim and contribution of this paper is the analysis of the immigrant’s situation during the pandemic from the perspective of companies. The research goal is the identification of strategies adopted by the firms employing immigrants, so as to providing additional help to their foreign workforce during the pandemic. For the purpose of this research, a multilevel model of the triangulation design was chosen. The qualitative research included seven in-depth-interviews with purposefully selected enterprises. The quantitative study was conducted on a sample of n=894 employers. For the purpose of the second round of research, 17 interviews with companies employing immigrants were conducted. The research showed that during the first wave of the pandemic, employers most often terminated employment with immigrants, which, however, in some cases, was the initiative of the immigrant. Some firms recognizing special needs of their foreign workforce developed strategies that manifested themselves in offering additional help to their foreign workers. The paper contributes to the literature on the situation of immigrants in terms of special treatments of immigrants as vulnerable workers and the knowledge of strategies enterprises adopted in order to help their foreign workforce during the pandemic by presenting the perspective of employers.

The work included an analysis of the primary real estate market in Krakow in 2017‑2020. The above analysis was carried out on the basis of transactions obtained from the official register at the city hall. The results of the research made it possible to observe the changes taking place in the market: the prices grew moderately, and the number of transactions was between 8,000 and 11,000 each year. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of transactions conducted dropped sharply. Despite the reduced interest of potential buyers, prices per square meter of residential space increased significantly during the period under review. Thus, the pandemic only affected the number of transactions and not the average price per unit of space.

Opis:
Critical events of a dangerous progression, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, may become the turning points in the functioning of entire societies. Such events obviously foster changes. They disrupt the sense of ontological security, generate fears and enforce change in the organization of social relations, also in a creative and positive manner. In addition to these effects, they also induce many others. They are a magnifier enabling you to see how modern societies are functioning. Therefore, a pandemic allows to see and describe more clearly the characteristics of postmodern human communities. Some of these characteristics (e.g. group functioning) are essentially constant and unchangeable for humans as a species. In turn, some features are very specific, characteristic for a given time, type of events and nature of participating communities. In this text, based on the desk-research methodology and non-systematic participant observation, I indicate the unchanging characteristics of human communities that emerge in the moments of crisis. I also present the specific features of postmodern communities that have been highlighted by the pandemic. I try to indicate the effects of the pandemic on social relations in the future.

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has shed a whole new light on telehealth, which has become an alternative for diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and support without physical contact between patient and healthcare professional. The aim of this study was to examine patient satisfaction with medical services provided with tele-advice during the Covid-19 pandemic.Material and methods: The study was conducted using our own questionnaire via Google Form that was correctly completed by 133 individuals between the ages of 18 and 76 years (mean 33.1 ± 13.1 years) who received medical services via tele-advice.Results: Patients with chronic conditions were statistically more likely to seek specialist services via tele-advice (p = 0.003). Slightly less than one-third of respondents (n = 39; 29.3%) were asked during the tele-advice to attend the clinic / office in person to complete the visit with a physical examination. The vast majority of subjects (n = 95; 71.4%) responded that their health status had not changed since the pandemic and the introduction of tele-advice. Nearly half (n = 64; 48.1%) believed that their health problem had been solved via tele-advice. Only 4.5% of the respondents (n = 6) strongly agreed with the statement that “tele-advice enables proper diagnosis and matching of effective treatment”, 18.0% (n = 24) tended to agree. The vast majority of respondents believed that everyone should be able to choose between tele-advice and a traditional medical visit (n = 121; 91.0%).Conclusions: The majority of people surveyed did not perceive a difference in their health since the pandemic and the introduction of tele-advice. Nearly half of respondents believed that their health problem had been resolved with a telemedicine consultation, with even fewer people convinced that “tele-advice allows for proper diagnosis and matching of effective treatment.” Patients would mostly like to have a choice between tele-visit and in-person visits, with no clear indication of the superiority of one or the other. Continuous improvement of current solutions will certainly contribute to increased patient satisfaction with the medical services provided.

The main aim of this study is to examine dynamic dependence and proof of contagion during the Covid-2019 pandemic. The empirical data are daily prices from six European indexes. The FTSE, DAX and CAC indexes represent the largest and most developed stock markets in Europe, while the Austrian ATX index represents small developed markets. The WIG and BUX indexes represent emerging European markets. This empirical study, based on the Dynamic Conditional Correlation model, which is applied to different pairs of indexes, aims to convince the reader of the increase in the correlation between the time of the pandemic (after 30 December 2019) and the period before the beginning of the pandemic. For all pairs, the mean value of the conditional correlations in the pre-Covid period was statistically below the values in the Covid period. The results indicate contagion in Europe after the outbreak of the Covid-2019 pandemic.

Technological development has resulted in the digitization of many areas of life. The modern society is particularly defined as the “information society”, because of the fact that most of their activities take place on the Internet and thus the society is information-dependent. The introduced governmental sanitary restrictions (also in terms of the functioning of the economy) to limit the spread of the coronavirus caused that life has shifted to a greater extent to the Internet sphere. The aim of the study is to determine the potential impact of a pandemic on the virtualization of buying behavior. The conducted research is exploratory in nature and constitutes a valuable starting point for potential further directions of analyzes. The results of this study showed that excavating the topic of the impact of the pandemic on buying behavior in the area of consumption virtualization is justified, because in all the analyzed product categories there was a statistically significant change in the form of purchases.

Despite the fact that the classical concept of geopolitics was first formed by Rudolf Kjellén in the early 20th century, modern experts in international relations still discuss the feasibility and relevance of these classical methods in today’s conditions. The academic debate revolves around new methods of geopolitical struggle in the foreign policy of the states in the international arena. Geographical features take a back seat, and economic, military, technological and informational factors come to the fore. The article’s aim is to analyse the impact of geopolitical competition of world leaders during the COVID-19 crisis. The author demonstrates the tendency of aggravation of geopolitical competition between the so-called Collective West and Chinese–Russian alliance. The degree of intensity of geopolitical competition poses a threat to the security and stability of the EU. To discuss the geopolitical competition, it is proposed to include the following issues: the main actors of geopolitical competition, the key methods of this competitiveness and their evolution under the coronavirus pandemic.

In the paper the results of research titled Cultural Institutions during COVID-19. Museum Strategies for Reaching the Public are presented. It was conducted by the Forum of Museum Educators as commissioned by the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections (NIMOZ). The main purpose was to show the impact of the pandemic on the operations of museums after 12 March 2020 when the decision was made in Poland to close the culture sector to the public; the aim was also to diagnose and analyse problems that the pandemic caused, and to point to the directions of impact on cultural institutions possible in the future, namely after restoring ‘normality’. The perspective adopted in the research, i.e., institutional and individual one, enables a multifaceted analysis of the processes initiated by museums in response to unclear and often complicated mechanisms of the new pandemic reality, which still today, some dozen months since its outbreak, continues for museums the source of challenges as far as logistics and financing issues are concerned.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused various disruptions in the production chains of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). Among other disruptions there is a drop of product sales, often due to lock-down measures, which resulted in last-minute order cancellations, non-payment of the already purchased resources and already made products, and hence terminations of employment contracts. International organisations and nongovernmental organisations have called upon MNEs to take their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and honour the contracts. The aim of this article is to analyse to what extend this moral appeal is also a (quasi-)legal appeal following from international norms on CSR. After an assessment of the main labour law problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an analysis follows on each of the identified problems. The conclusion of the analysis is that MNEs indeed are not only morally obliged to take their responsibility, but also based on the (quasi-)legal international CSR norms.

Opis:
Purpose: The questionnaire-based study investigated whether the COVID-19 pandemic increased stress in busy truck drivers' jobs. Design/methodology/approach: The sample of 239 drivers was examined in March-August, 2021. Findings: The study revealed that most drivers were resilient to COVID-19-related stressors. Some stressors, such as age, seniority, recovering from COVID-19, and worsening family financial conditions, were found to have more impact on some respondents than others. Age and seniority were related to anxiety about increased occupational activities. Those whose economic conditions worsened were afraid of job loss. People who recovered from COVID-19 felt overworked more often than others and tended to be scared of safety on the road and being alone in the truck. They more often required psychological support. Research limitations/implications: The study is based on a sample of drivers observed conveniently in 2021. Monitoring them in two or three waves is recommended to compare the impact of other processes that could affect responses. Practical implications: The outcomes are valuable in practice twofold. Firstly, the knowledge is acquired directly from the drivers who proved to be pretty resilient to COVID-related issues; however, some were more sensitive than others. That means the drivers as an occupational group cannot be considered uniform. Some needed psychological support, and such cases should be identified at the enterprise level. Secondly, the results show that COVID-related stressors with other accompanying issues increase the impact on drivers’ health. Originality/value: The empirical results revealed the most significant stressors. They were justified by using several stress definitions and psychological theories, particularly the Conservation of Resources Theory. They can be considered in the drivers' management process.

The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the portrayal of the COVID-19 pandemic in the media. Our primary focus is on Polish press articles, supplemented by occasional references to international sources. The analysis reveals that, much like in previous pandemics, the media narrative around COVID-19 is heavily metaphorical, aiming to simplify the understanding of this unfamiliar event. The most common metaphors involve war and battle, which have sparked controversy and significant criticism for their militaristic connotations. Our paper also examines alternative representations of the pandemic, such as natural disasters (with the fire metaphor being particularly apt), sports (including football, mountain climbing, and marathons), and other innovative comparisons (comparing the pandemic to an animal, driving a car, etc.).

The paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on macroeconomic activity in the selected European countries. The studies are based on monthly and quarterly indicators of GDP, unemployment rates and key indicators of the tourism sector. To present how COVID-19 has affected these macroeconomic variables, statistic data from the three periods are compared. Namely, data are collected from the pre-pandemic period, i.e. the fourth quarter of 2019 as the reference period, the second period covers the first quarter of 2020 and means the beginning of the pandemic, and the third one covers second quarter of 2020, during which the pandemic has spread to all the analyzed countries. The following statistical techniques are used in the research: regression analysis, the hierarchical grouping of agglomerations, k-means method, and selected non-parametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis test for a selected group of countries and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for a selected pair of countries). The results show the significant impact of the pandemic on the level of gross domestic product, unemployment rate and turism sector. In most cases, a correlation between incidence of COVID-19 infections, unemployment rate and GDP is observed. The statistical techniques also allow to demonstrate the similarities and differences in the response of the economies to the COVID-19 pandemic. Central Statistical Offices of the selected countries are the main data source and for all calculations Statistica version 13.3. is used.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on public health all over the world. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, the majority of countries introduced restrictions which entailed considerable economic and social costs. The main goal of the article is to study how the lockdown introduced in Poland affected the spread of the pandemic in the country. The study used synthetic control method to this end. The analysis was carried on the basis of data from the Local Data Bank and a government website on the state of the epidemic in Poland. The results indicated that the lockdown significantly curbed the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. Restrictions led to the substantial drop in infections - by 9500 cases in three weeks. The results seem to stay the same despite the change of assumptions in the study. Such conclusion can be drawn from the performance of the placebo-in-space and placebo-in-time analyses.

Our analysis is based on the Bill of Patients’ Rights that was in force in Poland before the announcement of the state of epidemic (March 20th 2020). The legal acts were analysed by use of the exegesis of legal texts and comparative legal literature rules. Results: The patients’ right to family life and presence of relatives during the performance of healthcare services and to additional nursing care has been directly limited. Rights that have been limited indirectly include the right to healthcare services (limited by the use of telemedicine) and the right to dignified death and pastoral care (patients often die alone). The limitations also have an indirect impact on the right to confidentiality and respect for privacy and dignity. Conclusions: Our analysis identified limited patients’ rights in Poland without entitlement to pursue claims thereunder.

Opis:
Alarming plastic production growth worldwide reinforces the public debate about the prevailing environmental crisis, whereby single-use-plastic (SUP) items are considered as by far the most harmful to the environment and public health. Accordingly, European environmental policy aims at eliminating SUP. Recently, we presented a model of plastic governance that derives from a circular economy approach identifying and taking into consideration perspectives of different actors in the plastic governance, such as producers, wholesalers, shop keepers, consumers, citizen scientists, and academia. Our results illustrate that the vast majority of stakeholders cared for the natural environment and understood the need to phase out SUP from the global economy. We proposed that a knowledge brokerage, undertaken by scientists via means of citizen science, as the most effective method to implement elimination policy, as it provides stakeholders with knowledge on why and how to handle SUP issues. However, at the time of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a plastic governance model required a re-assessment. The perceived role of SUP has changed, as it reflects the health emergency. Namely, due to the health safety reasons stakeholders and consumers are requesting even more SUP than previously. Following up on our data gathered prior to the pandemic, we suggest that under the new circumstances health concerns outweigh the environmental concerns being determined by a shift in the value hierarchization. The paper discusses preliminary results.

In the face of the new global economic challenges that the whole world is facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need to give attention to the crucial role of higher education, which has a significant impact on shaping all the nation’s future as it paves the road for a way out while partaking in rebuilding economic infrastructure and leading the economy to a brighter future. This research paper explains how the theory of effectuation complements the theories of entrepreneurship. It demonstrates how using the appropriate style of entrepreneurial leadership in higher education renders an eminent role in recovery during and post- COVID-19 by creating momentum for innovative change to combat the current economic challenges. The research paper provides a blueprint of the steps required via transformation leadership style to breed adequate culture and lead a healthy professional learning community through adopting and applying the Entrepreneurial University Model.

Opis:
The virocell concept of a viral lifecycle maintains that there are two main stages in a virus’s existence. The one is a passive state of a virion, which is not a living entity, and the second one is the virocell. In the state of virocell, a virus infects a host’s cell and hijacks its cellular machinery to achieve its own replication. Depending on the way that a cell reacts to a viral infection, it can have its activities or character as an individual living organism, suppressed completely, to some extent or not at all. In the article, the authors propose that there is analogy between the virocell theory as applied to the SARS-CoV-2 virus lifecycle and the sense of self for humans in the coronavirus pandemic world, and the post-COVID19 space-time. Methodology adopted is a combination of simile of Wittgenstein’s parallel cases, autoethnography, the virocell concept of the SARV-CoV-2 lifecycle and a multi-individual nature of one’s self based on the principles of the assemblage theory. The nature of human existence and the sense of self is defined as a relational notion which is tied to the societal educational standards, phases of developments of a human being and their fluid sense of self. The COVID19 pandemic space-time provides, in fact it demands that humanity undergoes an ongoing education of itself to maintain a productive and resilient movement forward for self and society, as an equivalent of the ribovirocell of a human cell infected with the coronavirus. The notion of speed will have to be unpacked and investigated further, which is done in part in a follow up article and is anchored as the defining characteristics of the post-COVID19 world.

The diagnoses and empirical analyses described in the article were linked by a common research problem expressed in the question about the experiences of academic entities in the field of remote education in the situation of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. The international research reported in the text, however, was conducted in an extra-coordinated situation (to a large extent during the lockdown period), applying two methodological approaches in complementary quantitative and qualitative procedures. Elements of a diagnostic survey (in Polish studies) and an analysis of the content of documents (in Italian studies) were used. The application of the indicated procedures allowed to obtain a complementary image of the experiences of higher education entities in the research situation outlined. The empirical analyses presented in the text allow for the formulation of certain common conclusions resulting from the reported international research. The international and global experience is a novelty of the epidemic situation in which remote education was implemented. The necessity arose to focus on the new conditions of relations between entities in academic education, which differ from traditional direct contact, as already indicated to us by Socrates and Plato. The lockdown changed these relationships. The everyday life of universities has been disrupted, which requires new solutions for the organisation of the educational process.

Opis:
Theoretical background: The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic heralded significant changes to existing HR activities followed by organizations and companies, trying to respond to government restrictions and new employment conditions. During these challenging times, employees are in the need of robust support by HR professionals in order to keep on performing, being motivated and thriving within their organizations and companies. Nonetheless, these modified HR activities are going through the stages of conception, actual implementation and, finally, they are experienced by employees. The intended, actual and experienced HR activities may evolve over time due to external and internal factors that are connected to pandemic. Understanding these changes is necessary for achieving effective HR management and optimal levels of organizational performance. Purpose of the article: The aim of this article is to discuss the factors that affect HR activities through the framework of their internalization process. The factors that may be catalysts for changes of the HR activities on different levels: intended, actual and experienced activities over time are discussed and guidelines for future research are suggested. Research methods: The article applies literature review of possible factors that may induce changes in intended, actual and experienced HR practices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Main findings: Absence of appropriate HR activities may increase anxiety and stress levels of employees. This negative impact can be potentially augmented by the perceived gap between employee expectations and the actual experience of these HR activities. In an effort to better understand these gaps occurring during the internalization process, we suggest that HR activities at the intended level may change due to business transformation, workplace transformation and employee well-being, while line manager’s characteristics and interactions with HRM departments may be catalysts for change in the actual HR. Finally, the assessment of the outcome of HR activities, the way in which they are delivered, and their continuity could be considered as important factors at the experienced level of the internalization process.

The article presents the results of a research questionnaire conducted among students and lecturers after the first, and repeated after the second, exam session during the pandemic crisis as this was the first time the examinations were conducted by distance education at The Maria Grzegorzewska University (Warsaw, Poland). Lecturers see the advantages of remote examination in the technological possibilities of conducting examinations (automation in checking and assessing the tests and archiving the results), time savings (immediate availability of results, flexibility of examination dates), and organizational improvements. Students indicate the comfort of writing the exam in a friendly environment, which reduces stress, and appreciate the possibility of obtaining results quickly and the need to spend less time on the exam itself. In the case of disadvantages of remote exams, lecturers indicate a lack of control over the independence and integrity of students, and students complain about the stringent time constraints, distractors and stress, as well as the level of the exam (both higher and lower compared to the level of traditional exams) and the adequacy of the grades obtained. Both groups consider technical problems that arise during the exam to be severe. Twenty percent of students admit to using unauthorized assistance during tests and exams. Academic teachers try to reduce the dependence of students by choosing an appropriate form of the exam (problem tasks, oral exams, open-ended questions, test variants), using special strategies (comparing students’ work, control questions, looking for parts of final papers on the Internet), and using technical solutions (requirement of turning on the camera, checking the metadata of files, the need to document work). The search for an effective and appropriate method of verification of learning outcomes is ongoing.

The problem of obesity is affecting an increasing number of people worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic and the required social distancing, which make it impossible to see a dietitian, present new challenges and require the development of new ways of working with overweight individuals. Based on research and practice, dietetic services are beginning to shift from in-office consultations to a form of online consultation using mobile apps and websites. This literature review aims to critically analyze the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of interventions targeting weight loss in overweight or obese individuals focusing on behavioral and online interventions. The data from the presented studies suggest that the effectiveness of online interventions to control body weight is high enough to be used in nutritional education and in weight reduction or maintenance. The main advantage is a wide access to them for the public.
Problem otyłości dotyka coraz większej grupy ludzi na całym świecie. Pandemia COVID-19 oraz narzucony dystans społeczny, uniemożliwiający spotkanie z dietetykiem, stawiają przed nami nowe wyzwania i wymagają wypracowania nowych sposobów współpracy z osobami z nadmierną masą ciała. W oparciu o badania naukowe i praktykę usługi dietetyczne zaczynają przechodzić z konsultacji stacjonarnych na formę konsultacji on-line, wykorzystując aplikacje mobilne i strony internetowe.

Opis:
Introduction: In December 2019 following an outbreak of Novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, it spread rapidly overwhelming the healthcare systems globally. With little knowledge of COVID-19 virus, very few published reports on surgical outcomes; hospitals stopped elective surgery, whilst emergency surgery was offered only after exhausting all conservative treatment modalities. Aim: This study presents our experience of outcomes of emergency appendectomies performed during the pandemic. Methods: Prospectively we collected data on 132 patients in peak pandemic period from 1st March to 5th June 2020 and data compared with 206 patients operated in similar period in 2019. Patient demographics, presenting symptoms, pre-operative events, investigations, surgical management, postoperative outcomes and complications were analysed. Results: Demographics and ASA grades of both cohorts were comparable. In study cohort 84.4% and 96.7% in control cohort had laparoscopic appendicectomy. Whilst the study cohort had 13.6% primary open operations, control cohort had 5.3%. Mean length of stay and early post-operative complications (<30 days) were similar in both cohorts apart from surgical site infections (p = 0.02) and one mortality in study cohort. Conclusion: In these overwhelming pandemic times, although conservative treatment of acute appendicitis is an option, a proportion of patients will need surgery. Our study shows that with careful planning and strict theatre protocols, emergency appendicectomy can be safely offered with minimal risk of spreading COVID-19 infection. These observations warrant further prospective randomised studies.

Opis:
The novel coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, has affected people globally. The reality of reduced working hours set in, and a contraction in consumer demand and business confidence began, leading to a reduction in spending and investment. Travel restrictions were put in place, trade was halted, and most of the way we were used to living changed drastically. To combat economic losses and complete economic shutdown, governments were forced to rollout relief policies to aid businesses and reduce financial losses. These policies include tax and bank payment holidays, underwriting of loans, job retention schemes, value-added tax (VAT) deferments, grants, and mortgage breaks. This study aimed to analyse the support policies that several European countries applied to assist businesses and compare them to South Africa. The study followed a qualitative exploratory research design using secondary data obtained from several open-source documents obtained from various government and non-governmental websites. Thematic analysis using Atlas.ti was used to analyse and report the data. Five themes emanated from the study: Business stability measures, Social support, Post-Covid recovery measures, Liquidity measures for businesses and Transmission prevention. In comparison with South Africa, several similarities were present in the Disaster Management Tax Relief Administration Bill. Yet, despite the commonalities that persist and the fact that South Africa shares in the spirit of the themes applied by the European nations, it is comparatively weaker when the breadth and scale of its interventions are compared.
. Wprowadzono ograniczenia w podróżowaniu, wstrzymano handel, a większość sposobu, w jaki przywykliśmy do życia, drastycznie się zmieniła. Aby zwalczyć straty gospodarcze i całkowite zamknięcie gospodarki, rządy zostały zmuszone do wprowadzenia polityki pomocy, aby pomóc przedsiębiorstwom i zmniejszyć straty finansowe. Badanie przebiegało zgodnie z projektem jakościowych badań eksploracyjnych z wykorzystaniem danych wtórnych uzyskanych z kilku dokumentów o otwartym kodzie źródłowym uzyskanych z różnych rządowych i pozarządowych stron internetowych. .

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the challenges and threats faced by social assistance institutions in the face of the second month of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland, with particular emphasis on disturbing phenomena and behaviours involving employees of these institutions. The text, on the one hand, supported by examples derived from personal experiences and reports of the social workers themselves, on the other, by the author's observations and reflections, can serve as a warning against hasty, chaotic actions undermining the morale and reputation of the social assistance system. In the current particularly difficult time for all, it should pass the test in responsible management, coherent cooperation, developing effective solutions and missionary character – serving the ones in need.
