Opis:
Thespesia populnea Corr. floral extract has been shown to have anti-steroidogenic effect. Bark extract of Thespesia populnea has no toxicity as per the earlier reports of traditional medicine used by the tribal peoples of Indira Gandhi Wild Life Sanctuary, Pollachi, South India. In the present study, anti-steroidogenic effect of Thespesia populnea (Malvacea) bark was evaluated in adult female mice (Mus musculus). Methanolic extract of Thespesia populnea bark (METP) was administered orally at the doses of 100, 250, 400 mg/kg body weight for a duration of 30 days, and normal saline (0.9%) to control group. There was significant reduction in the (P<0.05) wet weight of both ovaries. Cholesterol content in ovaries of METP treated mice was significantly increased (P<0.05). The two ovarian enzymes 3-,17-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase and serum estrogen and progesterone also decreased (P<0.05) significantly. Administration of METP in mice did not show any variation in the hematological and bio-chemical parameters. A certain number of adult female mice were ovariectomized (OVX) and tested for hormone levels with EDP and with EDP + Extract to confirm the antifertility effect of METP. It is concluded that antifertility effect of METP could be due to its anti-steroidogenic activity.

Opis:
Three-dimensional electron diffraction tomography allows one to obtain structure information from nanocrystals. However, in order to get accurate results the dynamical theory must be used due to the strong dynamical interaction between electrons and matter. Full structure refinement using dynamical theory has been in use for some time, in spite of being hampered by the fact that the intensities are very sensitive to variations of thickness and of the orientation of the sample. A remedy to this problem is the technique called precession electron diffraction. The use of precession electron diffraction in combination with electron diffraction tomography results in more accurate structure parameters and lower figures of merit in the structure refinement. The principles of electron diffraction tomography, precession electron diffraction and dynamical refinement will be demonstrated on the structural analysis of a nanowire of Ni₃Si₂.

Opis:
India is an immense medicinal plant repository, used in traditional medical treatments. The use of herbal medicine is growing day by day due to toxicity and allopathic drug effects. About 90 percent of the phytochemicals marketed come from wild resources and over 120 major phytochemistry come from plants. Aegle marmelos leaves contained π-sitosterol, aegelin, lupeol, rutin, marmesinine, flavone, glycoside, Oisopentenyl halfordiol, marmeline, and phenylethyl cinnamides. The additional growth promoters show its effect on tissue culture of plant.

Opis:
Tomato is one of the most consumed vegetable crops worldwide. In the break stage, it is perishable, and it has a postharvest life that does not exceed three weeks at 12 to 15°C. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of immersion in water and in calcium salt solutions on the metabolism and quality of tomato of traditional Peumo Pink cultivar stored for 28 days at 10ºC plus a simulated trading period of 2 days at 20ºC. Fruits were treated in water at 5, 45 and 60ºC at two immersion times of 1 and 4 min or in 2% solutions of calcium chloride, lactate and propionate at 10 and 45ºC for 4 min. The respiration rate, ethylene production and heat shock protein gene expression as well as firmness, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of tomato were determined. Dipping in water at 60°C reduced the loss of firmness and respiratory rate of tomatoes up to 21 days at 10°C + 2 days at 20°C. Treatment in water at 45°C for 4 min and at 60°C for 1 or 4 min stimulated heat shock protein gene expression. However, fruit treated at 60°C for 1 or 4 min showed uneven ripening; hence, the immersion in water at 45°C for 4 min was the most recommended to extend the postharvest life of tomatoes. In turn, the immersion in calcium lactate and propionate solutions at 45°C increased total calcium content and maintained firmness after 28 days at 10°C + 2 days at 20°C. The use of high temperature and calcium salts for dipping would be beneficial to provide the vegetal tissues with calcium and reduce the softening of the tomato after prolonged cold storage.
