    The paper analyzes the last will of Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, who in his youth abandoned ecclesiastical career and later took active part in the Fronde. Still later, de Bourbon became associated with Jansenists and spent the final years of his life on practicing piety, giving proof of his rigorous morality. The paper thus discusses his last will and professed expiation for the sins of youth, as it attempts to establish whether the testament is a testimony to prince’s Jansenist convictions.

    An Espresso-Coffee Machine supplies water which temperature must be confined within a narrow range in different operating conditions; this requires an accurate design at the component as well as the system level. In the present paper we develop a mathematical model to analyse the performances of the heating circuit of such a machine; our aim is to capture the main operating characteristics of the system with the maximum of simplicity. The governing equations of the model have been solved with the finite difference technique, and the first results have been compared with some experimental data.

    Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, was a younger brother of the Grand Condé. Destined for a church career, he gave it up and became politically associated with brother and sister – the famed intriguer Anna Genevieve, Duchess of Longue¬ville. Desiring to be regarded as a person unconstrained by moral principles, he led a very indulgent lifestyle. For a period of time, he was also Moliere’s patron. Armand wanted to equal his brother in renown, though he lacked the talent. For some time, he was considered the leader of the Fronde in Paris. He was imprisoned together with his brother and brother-in-law, then sought agreement with the court. His influences were to be boosted by marriage, first with the daughter of duchess de Chevreuse, then with the niece of Cardinal Mazarin – Anna Maria Martinozzi, which indeed took place. The marriage of a relative with a prince of the blood strengthened the position of the cardinal, while prince of Conti gained a way for final conciliation with the court. In the later years, Armand was a commander in Spain and held various court offices; he also changed his lifestyle utterly, having associated himself with the Jansenists. Armand died young, leaving two sons, the younger of which became a candidate for the Polish throne in 1697. His biography, in particular the issues relating to the marriage, are an interesting example of court intrigues and a game whose purpose was to consolidate the position of both Cardinal Mazarin and the royal cousin. The conduct of prince of Conti is also a vivid example of the mores of aristocracy in 17th-century France.

    Physical fitness and health are two concepts that more and more evidence show their close relationship. The main aim of this paper is to provide an assessment protocol accessible, affordable and easy to apply, to assess fitness and health. To test the protocol, a total amount of 115 participants (59 men and 56 women) aged 25.9 years were assessed. The assessment protocol is designed and tested for application in a population over 18 years of age. It was used to assess the University of Balearic Islands community users. Based on evidence and validated tests (Alpha and Afisal test batteries, Stepping Queen College Test), the following measures for the design of the protocol for assessing the level of fitness and health were recorded: anthropometry (weight, BMI, body fat, waist circumference), fitness (lower extremity strength, upper body endurance, hand grip strength, maximum oxygen intake, flexibility), and blood pressure. The assessment protocol include the previous action of the reception of the participant (explanation and administering of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) and an ending action where a report of the results obtained and individual recommendations to improve the overall fitness and health level is provided to each participant.

    The embedded systems are increasingly becoming a key technological component of all kinds of complex technical systems and an exhaustive analysis of the state of the art of all current performance with respect to architectures, design methodologies, test and applications could be very interesting. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), based on the well-known algorithm Rijndael, is designed to be easily implemented in hardware and software platforms. General purpose computing on graphics processing unit (GPGPU) is an alternative to recongurable accelerators based on FPGA devices. This paper presents a direct comparison between FPGA and GPU used as accelerators for the AES cipher. The results achieved on both platforms and their analysis has been compared to several others in order to establish which device is best at playing the role of hardware accelerator by each solution showing interesting considerations in terms of throughput, speedup factor, and resource usage. This analysis suggests that, while hardware design on FPGA remains the natural choice for consumer-product design, GPUs are nowadays the preferable choice for PC based accelerators, especially when the processing routines are highly parallelizable.

    The aim of this paper is to introduce just a few of the characteristics of popular music analysis that can assist further development of the discipline even for non-musicologists. After an introduction on why music analysis and popular music analysis – considering music as ‘humanly organized sound’ – are not popular in popular music studies and why contemporary popular music scholars tend to concentrate more on paramusical and extramusical issues, this presentation will concentrate on: song structures – or, as Philip Tagg calls it, the diataxis – comparing the structures most used by the Beatles; the sound of voices; the sound-box and the aural staging; the musical synecdoche. The final aim of this paper is to state the importance of music in music studies: paramusical and extramusical aspects are essential to understand how music works and communicates, but music is important as well.

    The paper presents the results of collision situation simulations concerning the m/v Gotland Carolina and the m/v Conti Harmony. The simulation aimed at analyzing the causes of the collision and generating manoeuvres that would have resulted in the two ships passing each other. The analysis was made with the use of a Navigational Decision Support System (NDSS). The data to be supplied to NDSS are collected from a variety of sources of navigational information. Then they are processed by specialized computing algorithms and presented to the operator on a display in the alphanumeric and graphic forms. The data on the specific navigational situation from the Danish Maritime Administration (DMA) were used for the generation of signals transmitted to NDSS.

    The aim of this pilot study was to determine (a) the effects of high intensity strength training in the workplace on blood pressure, fat percentage and physical fitness in overweight adults, and (b) the influence of this intervention on the blood pressure in a subsample of hypertensive subjects. Overweight adults (n=15) aged 42.8 years underwent anthropometric assessment (weight, fat percentage, waist circumference, and triceps skinfold), physical fitness assessment (leg extensor power, upper body endurance, hand grip strength and Vo2max) and blood pressure assessment before and after 8 weeks of high intensity resistance training in the workplace. Each training session consisted of 16 sets of 45 repetitions performed at 1 repetition per second, decreasing load at the point of muscular failure starting at 60% of repetition maximum (RM). The effects of the intervention were analyzed by paired sample t-tests. For exploratory purposes, a non-parametric test was also performed (Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank) to examine if this decision could affect the results. Weight, body fat percentage, and triceps skinfold decreased significantly with the high intensity resistance training protocol in the workplace (all P<0.05). Performance in physical fitness tests increased significantly with training (all P<0.05), except for handgrip strength. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly with R-HIRT in the workplace (all P <0.05) in hypertensive subjects (n=10). This protocol performed in the workplace in this pilot study produces health and fitness benefits in overweight and hypertensive people.

    In this paper we show that the set of all mild solutions of the Cauchy problem for a functional-differential inclusion in a separable Banach space E of the form x'(t) ∈ A(t)x(t) + F(t,x_t) is an $R_δ$-set. Here {A(t)} is a family of linear operators and F is a Carathéodory type multifunction. We use the existence result proved by V. V. Obukhovskiĭ [22] and extend theorems on the structure of solutions sets obtained by N. S. Papageorgiou [23] and Ya. I. Umanskiĭ [32].

    Since the beginnings of the 19th century in the new political and cultural circumstances, resulting from the French Revolution and the birth of nationalism, the myth of Dante Alighieri as a patriotic poet, a prophet of Italy struggling to rise and regain its independence, has been constructed. The final confirmation of Dante as a national poet took place in 1865 as the 600th anniversary of his birth was celebrated in the new reality of the Kingdom of Italy. The cult of Dante has been an obvious symbol of Italian-ness ever since. The 600th anniversary of his death, celebrated in 1921, in a country, although victorious in the Great War, at the same time affected by an unprecedented wave of social and political tensions, marked the peak of the idolatry of Dante. The paper analyses the symbolic and political implications of the celebrations held in three cities (Ravenna, Florence and Rome).

    The aim of this study is to see if there are significant relationships between different variables of physical condition and academic performance. Most literature shows that a relationship does exist, mainly emphasizing maximal oxygen consumption and academic performance. With regard to the other variables, more differences can be found. A total of 79 students participated in the study from the island of Majorca (Spain), ranging in age from 12.5 to 14.5 years. Students passed fitness tests, which were compared with their academic results. The results show a significant positive relationship between BMI and hand grip strength and significant negative relationships between BMI and note and between BMI and maximal oxygen consumption. No significant relationships have been found, however, between maximal oxygen consumption and note. Assessment of the importance of physical condition and therefore physical education in academic performance is of interest in order to implement the necessary hours of Physical Education. Furthermore, this subject should be characterised further in terms of its relation to the issue of health.

    The genus Laevitomaria is reviewed and its palaeobiogeographical history is reconstructed based on the re-examination of its type species L. problematica, the study of material stored at the National Natural History Museum of Luxembourg, and an extensive review of the literature. The systematic study allows ascribing to Laevitomaria a number of Jurassic species from the western European region formerly included in other pleurotomariid genera. The following new combinations are proposed: Laevitomaria allionta, L. amyntas, L. angulba, L. asurai, L. daityai, L. fasciata, L. gyroplata, L. isarensis, L. joannis, L. repeliniana, L. stoddarti, L. subplatyspira, and L. zonata. The genus, which was once considered as endemic of the central part of the western Tethys, shows an evolutionary and palaeogeographical history considerably more complex than previously assumed. It first appeared in the Late Sinemurian in the northern belt of the central western Tethys involved in the Neotethyan rifting, where it experienced a first radiation followed by an abrupt decline of diversity in the Toarcian. Species diversity increased again during Toarcian–Aalenian times in the southernmost part of western European shelf and a major radiation occurred during the Middle Aalenian to Early Bajocian in the northern Paris Basin and southern England. After a latest Bajocian collapse of diversity, Laevitomaria disappeared from both the central part of western Tethys and the European shelf. In the Bathonian, the genus appeared in the south-eastern margin of the Tethys where it lasted until the Oxfordian.

    The article presents the settlements and household accounts following the death of Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, as well as testamentary and pre-mortem bequests the prince made to provide for his servants. Surviving documents show the decision taken by the executors of the last will, while the books reveal ambiguous, sometimes astonishing variation of amounts designated as wages and lifetime stipends for the prince’s domestics, as well as attest to the concern of the testator himself and his wife for the fates of people engaged in the household.

    Mobile devices are widely replacing the standard personal computers thanks to their small size and userfriendly use. As a consequence, the amount of information, often confidential, exchanged through these devices is raising. This makes them potential targets of malicious network hackers. The use of simple passwords or PIN are not sufficient to provide a suitable security level for those applications requiring high protection levels on data and services. In this paper a biometric authentication system, as a running Android application, has been developed and implemented on a real mobile device. A system test on real users has been also carried out in order to evaluate the human-machine interaction quality, the recognition accuracy of the proposed technique, and the scheduling latency of the operating system and its degree of acceptance. Several measures, such as system usability, users satisfaction, and tolerable speed for identification, have been carried out in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach.

    The object of this article is the analysis of a typical specimen of Carolingian court poetry, namely Paul the Deacon's Carmen X, which was written at the very beginning of the so-called Carolingian Renaissance in 781. In my opinion, Paul's poem demonstrates once more how, on the one hand, the poetical technique and use of classical sources and, on the other hand, the crucial influence of the environment of Charlemagne's court that both makes Carolingian poetry an extremely innovative literary form, and strongly connects it with the later phenomenon of Humanism.

    In the first part of this paper mathematical description of heat transfer processes proceeding in the domain of continuous casting is presented. The approach called the second generation modelling is taken into account. In particular, the capacity of a source function in the energy equation is determined by the nucleation and growth laws and the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorow theory. Next, on the basis of the methods of sensitivity analysis the influence of cooling conditions of the cast slab surface on the course of solidification process is analyzed. At the stage of numerical computations the boundary element method has been used. In the final part of the paper an example of computations is presented.
    W pierwszej części pracy przedstawiono opis matematyczny krzepnięcia wlewka ciągłego wytwarzanego z czystego matalu. Do opisu wykorzystano podeście nazywane modelem drugiej generacji. W szczególności, wydajność wewnętrznych źródeł ciepła będąca składnikiem równania energii jest wyznaczana na podstawie praw zarodkowania i wzrostu oraz teorii Johnsona-Mehla-Avrami-Kołomogorowa. Następnie, wykorzystując metodę bezpośrednią analizy wrażliwości, badano wpływ warunków chłodzenia powierzchni wlewka na proces jego krzepnięcia. Na etapie obliczeń numerycznych zastosowano metodę elementów brzegowych. W końcowej części pracy pokazano przykład obliczeń numerycznych.

    Development of complex lubrication systems in the Oil&Gas industry has reached high levels of competitiveness in terms of requested performances and reliability. In particular, the use of HazOp (acronym of Hazard and Operability) analysis represents a decisive factor to evaluate safety and reliability of plants. The HazOp analysis is a structured and systematic examination of a planned or existing operation in order to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks to personnel or equipment. In particular, P&ID schemes (acronym of Piping and Instrument Diagram according to regulation in force ISO 14617) are used to evaluate the design of the plant in order to increase its safety and reliability in different operating conditions. The use of a simulation tool can drastically increase speed, efficiency and reliability of the design process. In this work, a tool, called TTH lib (acronym of Transient Thermal Hydraulic Library) for the 1-D simulation of thermal hydraulic plants is presented. The proposed tool is applied to the analysis of safety relevant components of compressor and pumping units, such as lubrication circuits. Opposed to the known commercial products, TTH lib has been customized in order to ease simulation of complex interactions with digital logic components and plant controllers including their sensors and measurement systems. In particular, the proposed tool is optimized for fixed step execution and fast prototyping of Real Time code both for testing and production purposes. TTH lib can be used as a standard SimScape-Simulink library of components optimized and specifically designed in accordance with the P&ID definitions. Finally, an automatic code generation procedure has been developed, so TTH simulation models can be directly assembled from the P&ID schemes and technical documentation including detailed informations of sensor and measurement system.

    This paper seeks to explore the issues of innovation and new path creation in the UK and Germany, illustrated through the case of the modern wind power industry. Taking an evolutionary perspective drawing on path dependence theory, the paper examines the role of niche environments in the creation of new economic pathways. The research finds that new economic pathways are more likely to develop in places where niche conditions provide receptive environments for innovations to flourish. The policy implications of the research include the importance of supporting niche environments that encourage growth in new sectors and the need for financial support to bring innovations to market, to encourage the development of new economic pathways.

    The Hettangian to earliest Sinemurian Vetigastropoda, Patellogastropoda, and Neritimorpha housed in the National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg are studied. Most of the species comes from the Luxembourg Sandstone Formation. This deposit formed along the southern margin of the London−Brabant−Ardennes Landmass, in a region that during the earliest Jurassic constituted a seaway connecting the Paris Basin with the epicontinental seas of the Netherlands and northern Germany. The systematic analysis revealed high diversity of the studied fauna; we identified twenty−two species, eleven genera, nine families, and six superfamilies. A new genus, Meiersia gen. nov., and three new species, Anodomaria schroederi sp. nov., Meiersia disarmata sp. nov., and Spirocirrus weisi sp. nov. are described. The fauna is dominated by pleurotomarioideans representing the genera Ptychomphalus, Pleurotomaria, and Trochotoma, and by the patellogastropod genus Scurriopsis both in number of species and specimens. The neritimorph genus Neridomus is also well represented. Among the accessory taxa, Anodomaria and Spirocirrusfirst appeared in the Late Hettangian of the Luxembourg area. Most of these genera show a species radiation in the Early Jurassic and are distributed over the western European epicontinental shelf, probably favoured by an east to west marine transgression which influenced wide areas from the basins of the northern Germany to the Paris Basin through the Luxembourg seaway. The evolutionary and palaeobiogeographical data demonstrate that this radiation was already considerably advanced in the Late Hettangian. This suggests that the recovery of the gastropod diversity after the end−Triassic crisis was relatively fast in western Europe.

    This paper analyzes the relationship between educational outcomes in access and socioeconomic levels of the population from Brazil, focusing on conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs (Bolsa Escola/Bolsa Familia) and the comparison between Brazil and the rest of Latin America in terms of improvements in educational outcomes. To do this, we analyze, for the 2000–2014 period, different indicators of educational outcomes at the aggregate level and/or income levels and poverty. These analyses are realized on the basis of microdata by country and year, homogeneously processed according to the criteria of the SEDLAC base. We conclude that the positive effect of that program is a robust conclusion, both in terms of impact studies and the evolution of aggregate data. It is also observed that Brazil must intensify efforts in basic education so as not to be left behind in the context of Latin America. Finally, the lack of progress in the tertiary/university sector calls for some thought on whether it is not necessary to modify the conditionalities of the program.
    W artykule przeanalizowano związek pomiędzy efektami edukacyjnymi w odniesieniu do dostępu i poziomu społeczno-gospodarczego ludności Brazylii z naciskiem na programy warunkowego transferu środków pieniężnych (Bolsa Escola/Bolsa Familia) oraz porównanie Brazylii z pozostałą częścią Ameryki Łacińskiej pod względem poprawy rezultatów w kształceniu. W tym celu autorzy przeanalizowali różne wskaźniki efektów edukacyjnych na poziomie zagregowanym i/lub na poziomie dochodów oraz wskaźniki ubóstwa w latach 2000–2014. Analizy te zrealizowano na podstawie mikrodanych według państw i lat, które w sposób jednolity przetworzono zgodnie z kryteriami bazy SEDLAC. Autorzy stwierdzają, że wniosek o pozytywnym efekcie programu jest zasadny w świetle zarówno badań wpływu, jak i ewolucji zagregowanych danych. Zauważają oni również, że Brazylia musi zintensyfikować działania w zakresie kształcenia podstawowego, aby nie pozostawać w tyle w porównaniu z pozostałą częścią Ameryki Łacińskiej. Ponadto brak postępów w sektorze kształcenia na poziomie wyższym wymaga zastanowienia się, czy nie jest konieczna zmiana warunków programu.

    By focusing on this little known parliamentary publication of 1697 this article attempts to make an addition to the early history of the Polish press as well as unveil an interesting source to the history of Poland during the interregnum after the death of King Jan III Sobieski. The article examines the news coverage of the Dyáriusz Seimu Electionis (unearthed by Konrad Zawadzki) by confronting it with the information in other contemporary sources such as diaries, memoirs and broadsheets. The editors of the Dyáriusz arrange its contents under two separate headings, Home and Abroad. While the former category Home goes beyond the coverage of parliamentary stories, the Abroad section follows current events in Europe
